It seems amazing that I am writing this, after being at NLCS Dubai for a full year. I can still vividly remember my first encounters with staff and students when I arrived last June, and I can honestly say that my first positive impressions have only been reinforced at various points throughout the year. Students and staff at NLCS work together so wonderfully, relationships are warm and caring, making it a special place to be. I am grateful for how staff, students, and parents have made myself and my family incredibly welcome here in Dubai. These are all indicators of a great school.
From the start of the first term, I have been really impressed with the way students and staff throw themselves into the wider life of the school. The ECA programme has gone from strength to strength with over 350 activities now running before and after school. In my ‘meet the principal’ sessions, this was highlighted as a popular feature amongst parents, although there were some great ideas for further refinement. Similarly, it has been really encouraging to see the very successful Senior school societies programme and Nicholson Lectures being introduced or expanded in the Junior school. These academically focussed enrichment activities are designed to both tap into and develop our students’ curiosity, and by extending them in the Junior school I am sure the transition into Senior school will be a little easier.
A vital component of the IB framework is global awareness, helping our students to become truly global citizens. This year saw a number of revamped events that have supported this aim. The Winter Fair was a lovely opportunity for everyone to get together and celebrate our diverse community. The Parents’ Guild masterminded the whole event with lots of staff supporting the various stalls and activities, my favourite was obviously the ‘water dunking’! I would like to thank everyone involved in supporting the event, especially the wonderful Parents’ Guild.
The Junior School International Fair was also an amazing community event, with over 50 countries represented with food, art and culture on display. I was so impressed with the students’ preparation, to make their displays both interactive and informative, and with the way parents had thrown themselves into representing their countries. We have also enjoyed wonderful Ramadan, Iftar, Diwali and Lunar New Year celebrations in school. These have all involved groups of parents from different communities so thank you all so much, we are really grateful for this support.
My final reflection on my first year at NLCS involves the student leadership which is evident at all levels. Students confidently leading assemblies, council reps conducting pupil voice discussions, over 250 students taking part in the Duke of Edinburgh and Bryant Award activities, student led societies, the Model United Nations conference hosted by our students, House Captains and Sports Leaders who support House activities and finally, The Big 4. I have been so impressed with the inspirational way Avdesh, Naba, Omar and Salayla have led our student body over the past year. They have led with compassion, energy and humility. They have shown skills that will definitely set them apart in years to come and I am grateful for all they have contributed to NLCS. In general, I have been incredibly impressed with all our Grade 12 students, who leave us for pastures new and exciting adventures. They are the best advert for our school, and they made us very proud indeed! I hope they all keep in touch as they become Old North Londoners.
As we finish the year, I hope you find the time to reflect on the many achievements celebrated in this yearbook. I know we can all look forward to an exciting 2025, with plenty of exciting challenges ahead.
Jon Locke
Principal NLCS Dubai
As we bid farewell to another remarkable year at NLCS Dubai, it is with immense pride and gratitude that we reflect on the journey we have embarked upon together. The Junior School has been a vibrant hub of learning, growth, and community spirit, embodying the core values that define NLCS Dubai: care, courtesy, consideration, and the power of connection. It is all showcased here in this amazing Yearbook for 2024!
At the heart of our Junior School ethos lies a deep commitment to care – for one another, for our community, and for the world around us. Throughout the year, we have witnessed countless acts of kindness, generosity, and empathy demonstrated by our students, staff, and families. Whether it was lending a helping hand to a classmate, supporting a friend in need, or participating in charitable initiatives, the spirit of care has permeated every aspect of our school life, creating a warm and inclusive environment where every individual feels valued and supported.
Courtesy is not merely a set of manners, but a reflection of our respect for one another as unique individuals. In the Junior School, we celebrate diversity and cultivate a culture of mutual respect and understanding. Our students have shown exemplary courtesy in their interactions, embracing differences, and fostering a culture of inclusivity where every voice is heard and valued.
Consideration lies at the heart of everything we do at NLCS Dubai. Our students have looked beyond themselves, to empathise with others, and to take action to make a positive difference in the world. Whether it was raising awareness for important causes or volunteering their time and talents, they have demonstrated remarkable empathy and social responsibility.
As we reflect on the past year, we are also reminded of the incredible power of connection – the bonds that unite us as a school community and the opportunities that arise when we come together with a shared purpose. From collaborative projects and team-building activities to our community events, the Junior School has been alive with the energy of connection, fostering meaningful relationships and enriching experiences both in and out of the classroom. It is through these connections that we grow, learn, and thrive as individuals and as a community.
Together, let us continue to uphold the values that define us, to embrace challenges with resilience and determination, and to strive for excellence in all that we do. In closing, I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to our students, parents, staff, and wider community for their unwavering support and dedication. It is through your collective efforts that NLCS Dubai continues to thrive. Here's to another year of kindness, success, and endless possibilities!
When contemplating where to begin for this year’s reflective piece, I genuinely found it a challenge to pin point the stand out moments, as there has been so many! Year on year, the students fill us all with pride in their day to day interactions and accomplishments.
Enriching performances have put smiles on the faces of staff, students and their families through the more formal events of the Early Years Winter Concerts, KG2 Founder’s Day Plays and the G1 drama productions in the Summer Term, as well as when sharing their work as part of Exhibitions.
Central to this year’s Founder’s Day has been the theme of connection, and this academic year I feel this theme has woven itself into every aspect of our school life, including strengthening the bonds within our community. Having wider parental support to celebrate key moments in the cultures of our international community really has helped the children understand the wider world. Celebrations of Diwali, Lunar and Chinese New Year as well as the Holy Month of Ramadan, have been enhanced by our parental community and I would like to extend my thanks to all who have been involved in making these times even more special. International Day itself will no doubt have been a highlight for many students, with the chance to find out more about so many countries through the sharing of information visually, taking part in arts and crafts, as well as food tastings and watching and listening to performances on the stage.
Ultimately, the connections fostered between our students and staff are the most significant aspect of being in school. Our dedicated team knows each child individually, which ensures that all thrive not just academically, but emotionally and socially. I have no doubt that as the students move onto their next Grade, these bonds will continue to be nurtured for this is at the heart of our practice at NLCS.

In a world of boundless wonder, where dreams take flight, Children bloom, their hearts alight. In tender years, they begin to explore, Embracing emotions, seeking more. With each step, they build resilience strong, Facing challenges, righting every wrong. In the dance of friendship, they find their way, Learning to trust, come what may. Expressions bloom like flowers in spring, In words and whispers, they spread their wings. Discovering the power of voice so true, To share their joys, their fears, their view. They grasp the magic of sound and speech, How letters unite, a treasure to reach.
From babble to chatter, they learn to convey, Ideas and dreams in their own special way. Numbers dance in their curious minds, Different shapes, different kinds. Counting dinosaurs, cars in a row, Imagination soaring, as they grow. Lions roar, cars vroom and zoom, In worlds of make-believe, there's always room. With dolls as companions in their play, They learn empathy in every sway. Paintbrushes wielded with colourful delight, Bringing to life visions, bold and bright. In shades and hues, they find their voice, In every stroke, they rejoice. Dancing freely, in rhythm and rhyme, Expressing their essence, one step at a time. In every leap, in every twirl, They discover the magic of their own world. In the tapestry of childhood, rich and grand, They learn, they grow, they understand.
In the dawn of a new academic year's light, The children will soar, their success a continued flight.

You have worked very hard this year and I know you are ready for your next adventure. Be as curious as you were on your first day at Kindergarten One and you will be fine. Make new friends. Embrace each challenge. Share your thoughts. Be bold and strong.
It is time for you to become more independent, yes. You can do this.
Pick up your pencil and write. You make a mistake? It’s alright. How else will you learn if you don’t? Brush yourself off and start again. Always remember you have people on your side to help you. Mummy, daddy, nanny and your teachers.
Ask a lot of questions and ask some more if you can. So, it is time for me to say… Well before I say it finally, I want you to take a big breath and say, “I CAN DO THIS”. …Now it is time for me to say, Goodbye!

Dear my superstar sharks, What an incredible year we have had!
I feel honoured to have taught you and got to know you all individually. You are sweet and kind and have brought so much joy to our classroom. Your excellent behaviour and drive allowed you to make wonderful progress in your learning. The most important thing I have learnt is how talented you are in your own unique ways. You have demonstrated so many incredible skills that have impressed me across the year.
Firstly, your dedication to your house teams has been wonderful to see. You have worked hard every single week to gain stars and encourage each other to be role models in the classroom. Your team spirit attitude also shone through during our KG2 sports day where you worked hard together in your house teams to gain points at each sporting event. You communicated well with each other and showed risk taking qualities when trying out each event.
Secondly you impressed me with your risk-taking attitude across the year. For example, you shone like true professionals in our Founder's Day performance. You wowed the audience of parents by singing beautifully, remembering your lines and positions and not forgetting your incredible dance moves. As well as this, a group of girls have shown confidence in their ability to perform a wonderful traditional Chinese New Year dance to a large audience. Your risk-taking attitude also extends to PE and swimming where you have blown Mrs Garrett away by your ability to try out new things and participate to a high standard.
Additionally, you demonstrated your creative side on many occasions including our World Book Day dress up day, bedtime story dress up day and when expressing yourself on International day. You have also demonstrated your creativity when creating your own dioramas and animals as well as recreating the famous Café Terrace at Night painting by Vincent Van Gogh in your own way.
Lastly, I will cherish the memories we made on all of our adventures in KG2, but a special highlight was our trip to Dubai Safari park. You loved learning lots of exciting facts about different animals on our safari experience. I am so proud I was your teacher. I watched you learn and grow.
As we say goodbye to KG2, your new chapter in grade one is just about to begin.
Reach for the stars, spread your wings and fly. You truly are superstars.
Kind wishes.

Music has been used as a powerful tool within each assembly. Creating a fun, lively atmosphere. Miss Peoples has shared new songs with the students and songs that they have had previous knowledge learning in their music classes. With have had sing-a-songs and other musical performances.
Storytelling has been a key feature within our assemblies. This has been a wonderful way to introduce important concepts and reinforce important values.
It has been wonderful to watch the delight on the children’s faces when they had the opportunity to take home the class mascots and achieve a certificate in the celebration part of our assembly.
Singing to the whole of lower school was a highlight for the KG2 children during our Founder’s Day celebrations.

Dear Camels Class,
As we wrap up this school year, I want to take a moment to reflect on our shared journey and share some of my highlights of the year. Your growth, curiosity, and friendship have made this year truly special.
Our trip to StuDIYo Lab was a blast! Remember turning old gadgets into funky self-portraits? Your creativity and resourcefulness were off the charts. Those quirky masterpieces captured your personalities beautifully.
At Adventure Zone, we laughed, sweated and conquered obstacles together. Scaling walls, navigating courses—it was all about teamwork and staying active. These memories will stick with me.
Who could forget our eggshell colour-changing experiment? The eggshells transformed like magic before we restored them with toothpaste. And our toy car races? We tested friction on various surfaces, and you all raced like pros!
As you move forward, remember you are capable of wonderful things. Keep that curiosity alive, support each other, and never stop learning. Farewell, Camels Class—I will miss you all!

Within the vibrant walls of Bobcats Grade 1 class, under the nurturing guidance of Mrs. James, a journey of discovery and camaraderie has unfolded. With just 17 eager minds to begin with, the class witnessed both farewells and welcomes, as Roxane departed for new adventures in England while Theo, Fatima, and Kianveer seamlessly integrated into the class, followed by Eason completing the invincible team of Bobcats.
Term 1 saw these eager students exploring the intricacies of self and society, delving into the mysteries of the human body, crafting imaginative characters similar to 'The Couch Potato', and even concocting their own nutritious smoothie bowls. Undeterred by challenge, they embraced Adventure Park, scaling walls, defying gravity on trampolines, and navigating rope courses with the spirit of PYP Risk Takers.
Under Mrs. James' guidance, the curriculum expanded to unveil the wonders of the wider world, from unravelling the secrets of friction through car design to journeying through the history, exploring the realms of Ancient Egypt, Greece, Victorian England, and beyond. Through it all, the Bobcats not only absorbed knowledge but also forged bonds of friendship and empathy, understanding the significance of each member of their class. With a shared belief of kindness, respect, and a desire for learning, it has been a pleasure and a privilege to be part of the Bobcats, cherishing each moment as they have grown, learnt, and laughed together.
Razan, Fatima, Lilia, David, Kianveer, Sophia, Olivia, Aya, Eason, Rehman, Shiv, Nelson, Nyla, Theo, Sakina, Uzair, Aira, Hussam, Moneim, Emaan and Roxanne. Once a Bobcat, always a Bobcat!

Embracing Ideas: A Yearbook Entry Inspired by "What Do You Do with an Idea?"
As I reflect on this school year, I find myself drawn to the message of Kobi Yamada's "What Do You Do with an Idea?" This story, with its simplicity and depth, inspires us to embrace our ideas, no matter how small or seemingly insignificant they may appear at first glance.
Out of nowhere an idea appeared. It was glorious and bright and egg-shaped and adorned with a golden crown. It looked delightful, yet curious. There was no explanation as to why it appeared or why it remained. How peculiar. Its brittle shell held up only by twiggy, bird-like legs must require gentle care. The child wasn’t sure if they were up for the challenge, turned, and walked away. “I acted like it didn’t belong to me.” But the egg followed closely behind. This idea was relentless, and the child couldn’t shake it from their heels.
After toiling with the idea, trying to keep it tucked away and hidden from the appraisals of others, they realised this egg wasn’t meant to be hidden. It was too magical to be kept secret; this idea demanded to be known. Even though the child was afraid to show it to others, convinced some would diminish it and possibly them as well, they unveiled it anyway. Some did say it was useless or even strange. But this one child wouldn’t listen to cynics. Instead, they willed the idea to grow healthy and strong- as it did, they did too. And soon, “It wasn’t just a part of me anymore…it was now a part of everything.”
Throughout the year, I've witnessed the power of ideas within the Junior School. From the inception of new clubs and initiatives to the creative projects born out of classroom discussions, each idea has left its mark.
Just like the protagonist in Yamada's story, we've learned that nurturing an idea requires courage, patience, and perseverance. It's about daring to believe in the possibility of something extraordinary, even when faced with doubt or uncertainty.
In the corridors, classrooms, and beyond, we've seen our students fearlessly pursue their ideas. Whether it's a passion project, a solution to a problem, or an innovative concept, each idea has sparked conversations, ignited imaginations, and inspired action.
This yearbook serves as a testament to the incredible ideas that have shaped our school experience. As we flip through its pages, we're reminded of the countless moments when we dared to dream, create, and innovate.
To all the dreamers, thinkers, and visionaries within our midst, we celebrate you. Thank you for reminding us that ideas have the power to change the world – one thought, one action at a time.
As we embark on the next chapter, let's carry the spirit of "What Do You Do with an Idea?" with us. Let's continue to embrace our ideas, nurture them with care, and watch them soar beyond the confines of our imagination.
Here's to the dreamers and the doers – may your ideas continue to shape the world in remarkable ways.

On yet another great year, the curtains now close, so much to look back on, do I choose verse or prose?
Irrespective of choice, It’s an impossible ask, To share all your success? An insurmountable task!
It’s not that I approach this challenge, Without rhyme or reason, But you’ve all achieved so much, In just one academic season!
Grade Two for example, Where do I start?
Building breathtaking bridges Or crafting masterpieces of art, Rain Rooms, Jam Jar, so much to explore! Who could forget the big bus tour?
Then there’s Grade Three
Who continued to flourish and grow, Showcasing TED Talks, Organising their own NGOs.
Who could forget Ellis Island? Migration history brought to life, A drama that encapsulated, Liberty, hope and strife.
Our attention then turns, To the delightful Grade Fours, who personify our mantra: No ceilings just floors.
From hosting a Wellbeing Day
And finding their Zen, To a healthy-snack pitch On their own Dragon’s Den.
Last but not least,
Our departing Grade Five Who led our new Houses, And allowed them to thrive.
They inspired us all, They know no frontiers, Nicholson Lectures, Bryant Awards Enrichment pioneers.
But what of Exhibitions
An omission to perplex! No mention of body systems? Art? Exploration? PYP X?
Alas, I save my final ditty, For the highlight of my year, International Day. The purpose? Crystal clear. We shared our culture, Our heritage and tradition, International Mindedness. A fitting definition.

In a Dubai desert, far away, lived 23 Desert Ants. They weren't your ordinary ants—they were a class of Grade 2 students at NLCS Dubai, known as the Desert Ants; the wonderful, amazing, Desert Ants. Under the wise guidance of their teacher, Miss Taylor, they embarked on a year filled with adventures and learning.
Their classroom, nestled amidst the golden sands, buzzed with excitement as the Desert Ants explored the wonders of the world around them. From their trips to places like the Jam Jar, where they painted masterpieces, to experiencing the marvel of the Rain Room and discovering the splendid structures of Dubai on the Big Bus Tour, every day was an adventure.
But the real magic happened within the pages of the stories they read. With Hari and his Electric Feet, Arthur and the Golden Rope, and the mysterious Iron Man, the Desert Ants embarked on thrilling journeys of imagination. They brought these stories to life on World Book Day, dressing up as their favorite characters and captivating the entire school with their assembly.
As they journeyed through the year, the Desert Ants faced challenges in Reading, Writing, and Maths, conquering each one with determination and teamwork. They delved into topics like structures, the water cycle, art, and cultures in their Unit of Inquiry, broadening their horizons with every lesson.
As the year drew to a close, the Desert Ants looked back on their adventures with fondness and pride. They had grown, learned, and forged friendships that would last a lifetime. With the desert sun setting on their Grade 2 journey, they eagerly awaited the new adventures that awaited them in the years to come.
Their teacher smiled as she waved them goodbye, thinking of the fun they had, the learning that had taken place and the memories they had made.

As we approach the end of this academic year, I sit and reflect on the educational journey we’ve shared together. Oryx class, I am immensely proud of each and every one of you. Your hard work, resilience, and positive spirit have made this year memorable.
From day one, I’ve been impressed with your commitment to learning. Whether it was mastering multiplication or fractions, crafting careful compositions, designing experiments for inquiry or science, or exploring the use of colour to express your own ideas, emotions and beliefs in art class, you approached every challenge with determination. I hope you each take a moment to recognise how far you’ve come and celebrate each of your achievements.
I am proud to say that throughout the year you welcomed new students to our class, making them feel accepted from the very beginning. Your ability to create a warm and inclusive environment is a testament to your character. Remember that this spirit of acceptance and empathy will serve you well throughout your life.
This year you have embodied the PYP learner profiles. You’ve been inquirers, thinkers, communicators, and risktakers. You’ve demonstrated integrity, empathy, and respect for others. These attributes are not just words; they are the foundation upon which we’ve built our learning journey and I hope you continue to embrace and embody them as you continue your education. Additionally, your development of your Approaches to Learning skills has been noticeable. Whether it’s researching a topic, collaborating on a project, or organizing your thoughts, you’ve honed essential skills that extend beyond the classroom and will benefit you in the years ahead. Well done!
As you move on, my hope is that you will take a moment to look back on this year and consider all you have done, the growth you have shown, educationally, emotionally, and socially. Through our inquiry we learnt that we each develop differently, make progress in both small steps and huge leaps. We know that we are all unique, capable, and valuable. This year you have demonstrated knowledge, understanding, resilience but perhaps most importantly, kindness. As a school we value care, courtesy, and consideration. I have seen all of you embrace these values this year. Take them with you as you continue onwards, in school and beyond.
Best wishes, Jon

The Grade 4 Arabian Wolves class has truly epitomised a year of growth, camaraderie, and boundless learning adventures. Throughout the academic journey, our class has embraced a myriad of experiences, propelled by the infectious enthusiasm of Gary the Gibbon, who has accompanied us on our learning journey every step of the way.
Together, we've navigated challenges, celebrated victories, and fostered a culture of collaboration that has elevated each individual's learning journey. Our classroom echoes with the harmonious blend of diverse languages and shared cultures, weaving a tapestry of understanding and appreciation. Laughter has been our constant companion, enlivening every lesson and bonding us in unforgettable moments. Yet amidst the joyous moments, we've remained steadfast in our commitment to progress, each step forward a testament to our collective dedication.
As we bid farewell to this chapter, we carry with us cherished memories, enduring friendships, and the indomitable spirit of being in the Wolfpack.
The Grade 4 residential trip took place from the 5th to the 7th of February 2024. We went to Wadi Shawka in the Hajar Mountains of Ras Al Khaimah. Over the course of the days, we did many enjoyable activities such as hiking, Wadi BioBlitz, snorkeling, water filtration, water safety and survival.
Once we had arrived, we were told our groups and our tents. On the second day some of us stayed at camp to do the nature activities while others went to the beach to take part in the water activities. The residential trip was a lot of fun and an amazing learning experience and lots of fun! Thank you to all of our teachers for making the trip possible.
It started off at school, everyone buzzing with excitement while we waited to hear which bus we were on. Then we got a colourful ribbon to tie to our luggage, I had a pink one that indicated I was on bus two. Then once the staff had stored our luggage on the bus, we set off on a two-hour journey. While we were on the bus, the teacher told us what tents we were in. I was with Axel, Oscy and Artin, this made me very excited, and I couldn't wait to get there! We all got off the bus and went into the camp, it was amazing, I was surrounded by mountains and nature. We had a quick lunch and then got straight into the activities!.
The first activity was making our own compasses out of natural resources, this activity was very interesting, and I am sure the skills I learnt will come in handy someday when I am older. Next, we estimated how many steps it would take us to walk 100 meters, I got quite close to the number of steps, so I was quite proud. Then we checked which way we were going on the compass that we made using the sun and we figured out how to see where North, South, East and West pointed at. Ater that, we had a delicious dinner before making our way over to the campfire where we told each other stories. I then tucked myself up into bed and waited for the next day to begin.
Teacher: Mr Collier
As the year draws to a close, I have been able to reflect on what an amazing year it has been. August seems like such a long time ago and in the time between now and then you have achieved so much. You have become a class of inquisitive, creative and principled students who make me smile and laugh every day; I am proud to be your teacher.
During the year, you have showcased your skills and knowledge through a variety of units. At the start of Grade 5, you all showed a deep understanding of leadership and many of you have demonstrated leadership qualities throughout the year in roles such as Student Councillor, House Captain and Sports Leader. Your hard work and dedication was evident during our unit on ‘Where we are in Place and Time’; the dioramas that you produced were exceptional and the way you all passionately spoke about your civilisation was incredible. I have to also mention our class assembly as a highlight; I will never be able to read the story again without hearing ‘Odysseus?!’ in my head!
In our next units on ‘How the World Works’ and ‘How We Express Ourselves’, you continued to produce high quality work, collaborating and organising yourselves to create some amazing final pieces. The Futurist art and your clay tiles expressing your culture were two pieces that you should all be proud of.
Undoubtedly, the highlight of the year was the PYP Exhibition. Watching you all start with a Sustainable Development Goal and end with engaging, informative and inspirational displays showed what internationallyminded, global citizens you are. I was blown away with the ways you took action on an issue that you felt passionately about and I know that your work had a huge impact on everyone who attended.
Throughout this year, we've been on various trips which have enhanced your learning and an amazing residential. We visited the Etihad Museum, attended a performance of Macbeth, and delved into art history at the Theatre of Digital Art. However, our residential trip to Sir Bani Yas Island stands out as the highlight of the year. Witnessing you all forge new friendships and engage enthusiastically in activities like sea survival and mangrove planting was truly rewarding. I hope it remains a cherished memory for you all for years to come.
As we say goodbye to each other, I want to say thank you. Thank you for working hard, not giving up when things have been challenging and embodying what it means to be an NLCS student. Most of all, thank you for just being you; I won’t forget this year and the positive impact you have had on me. I hope you won’t forget your time in G5 either.
I have been fortunate to have you as a class and I wish you all the best for next year and beyond; I know you all possess the qualities needed to be successful.
Teacher: Miss Henry
Dear Cormorants,
What a fantastic year it has been! Arriving in Dubai in August, I was eagerly awaiting meeting you all and when I did, I was blown away. I met a class of enthusiastic, hard-working and caring children who have made me laugh every day. Over the year, I have watched you embody the IB Learner Profile Attributes and become children who truly represent the values of NLCS Dubai.
During the year, you have showcased your skills and knowledge through a variety of units. You demonstrated your leadership qualities and understanding of what a good leader is in our first unit. Your efforts and commitment to your mini-exhibition paid off in our next unit looking at various ancient civilisations; it was amazing to see what you all produced and the detail in which you talked about your work. In our next units on ‘How the World Works’ and ‘How We Express Ourselves’, you continued to produce high quality work, collaborating and organising yourselves well to create some amazing final pieces. Your PYP Exhibition was the highlight of the year; I felt so proud seeing you all take ownership of your learning and present passionately about an issue that you felt strongly about. I was also impressed with the range of action you took to help raise awareness of these issues.
We have also enjoyed a range of trips and a residential this year. Visiting the Etihad Museum, watching Macbeth and enjoying the ‘100 Years of Art History’ at the Theatre of Digital Art. However, the residential to Sir Bani Yas Island is undoubtedly the best trip of the year. I enjoyed watching you form new friendships and apply yourselves to a range of activities such as sea survival and mangrove planting. It was an amazing experience and one I hope you will all cherish for many years to come.
Now the year has drawn to a close, I want to say thank you. Thank you for making my first year at NLCS Dubai so special; I couldn’t have asked for a better class to start my time here.
I wish you all the best for next year and beyond; I know you all have the qualities and skills needed to be successful and more importantly, happy. Be kind to yourselves and treat yourself with love and understanding. Do not compare yourself to others and always remember you are exactly who you are meant to be, and you should be incredibly proud of yourself.
You are enough. You are valued. You are incredible.
Teacher: Mr Mullan
As we reach the end of another remarkable year, it's time to reflect on all the incredible experiences and knowledge we've gained together. From unraveling the mysteries of literature to delving deep into the world of mathematics and science, our journey has been nothing short of inspiring.
This year, we embarked on literary adventures through the pages of timeless classics. From the tragic tale of Macbeth to the epic journey of Odysseus, we explored the depths of human nature, courage, and resilience. Our discussions sparked imagination and empathy, leaving an indelible mark on our understanding of literature.
Equipped with newfound mathematical concepts, we ventured into the realm of algebra. Solving equations and unraveling patterns challenged us to think critically and creatively. With each problem solved, we grew more confident in our mathematical abilities, paving the way for future academic endeavors.
Our scientific journey was filled with fascination and wonder. We delved into the world of biology with Carl Linnaeus, learning about classification and the diversity of life forms. Additionally, we explored Isaac Newton's groundbreaking Theory of Colour and explored how light travels, unlocking the secrets of the visible spectrum and the nature of light itself.
Beyond the classroom, we embarked on unforgettable excursions that enriched our learning experiences. Visits to the Etihad Museum and Theatre of Digital Art provided us with insights into history, culture, and technology. Moreover, our residential trip to Sir Bani Yas Island allowed us to connect with nature, fostering a sense of appreciation for the environment and our place within it.
As we bid farewell to Grade 5, let us carry forward the lessons learned, the memories cherished, and the friendships forged. Each one of us is a testament to our growth, resilience, and determination. Congratulations, Grade 5 Falcons, on a remarkable year filled with achievements and milestones.
Teacher: Ms Durkan
What a wonderful year we have had together, filled with learning, laughter, and memorable moments. It has been an incredible journey where we've overcome challenges, embraced new opportunities, and formed bonds that will last a lifetime, all while discovering passions and talents along the way.
The Eagles thirst for inquiry has enabled them to ask questions, conduct experiments, write stories, and solve problems, each lesson shaping them into critical thinkers and lifelong learners. Outside the classroom, the Eagles were busily involved in extra-curricular activities and societies, and we even had Eagles who successfully took their voice to a Nicholson Lecture and organised and implemented their own society.
Highlights from this year include a visit to the theatre to watch a magnificent performance of Macbeth on the QE2 and a visit to the Theatre of Digital Art to see one hundred years of art from Monet to Kandinsky. We enjoyed many events such as International Day when we celebrated the culture of Italy, Sports Day and Book Week. The students never ceased to amaze me with their efforts in ensuring that The Eagles were organised and well prepared for every event. Their unwavering team spirit always shone through.
Our class assembly focusing on our Unit of Inquiry, Tomorrow’s World, was a great success due to the dedication of the Eagles. They showcased their talents like true professionals showing meticulous attention to detail, all while having a great time.
The Eagles have been great role -models as Grade 5 students. Their achievements spectacular and their attitude outstanding. Now it is time for them to move on to adventures new, in Senior School where I am sure they will continue to flourish and reach new heights. I am very proud of you all.
Dear Kestrels,
As I bid farewell to my incredible Kestrels class, I am filled with immense pride and admiration for each and every one of you. It has been an absolute joy to watch this remarkable group of individuals grow and flourish over the past year and I have no doubt that you will continue to soar to even greater heights as you embark on your journey to senior school.
Throughout the year, you have demonstrated commitment to your academic pursuits and personal development. Your thirst for knowledge and passion for learning have been remarkable and I have been continually impressed by your willingness to challenge yourselves and push the boundaries of your own potential. The work you delivered during your PYPx was inspirational and demonstrated a mature attitude towards important local and global issues; you carried out meaningful research, became empowered to learn more and took action to make a difference, encompassing your years of PYP learning and showing that you are true global citizens.
I may not have been with you for the whole year but I feel very lucky to have spent the majority of the year working with you. Beyond your academic achievements, what truly sets the Kestrels apart is your sense of camaraderie. You have formed deep bonds of friendship, creating a warm and comical community where every voice is heard and valued. Whether collaborating on group projects, cheering each other on during sports events, making new friends on residential or lending a helping hand to those in need, the Kestrels have exemplified the true meaning of teamwork.
As you prepare to transition to Senior School, I have every confidence that the Kestrels will continue to shine brightly wherever your paths may lead. You are a group of talented, resilient, and compassionate individuals, and I have no doubt that you will go on to achieve great things in the years to come. It has been an honor and a privilege to be a part of your journey and I wish you all the success and happiness in the world.
Go forth, Kestrels, and spread your wings – the sky's the limit!

Dear Ospreys,
As we reach the end of your Grade 5 journey, I wanted to take a moment to reflect on the time we’ve shared together. The year has been filled with laughter, learning and growth and it has been a pleasure to teach you all and to watch you grow into independent and accomplished students.
From our first day, full of excitement and nerves, to the bonds we’ve formed as Ospreys, every moment has been special. Whether it was working together investigating how to extract DNA from a banana, cheering each other on during house events or simply sharing stories during our lunchtime, our time together has been unforgettable. There are so many memories of our year, your confidence at presenting your learning in the PYP exhibition; your passion for debating or sharing your opinions and your resilience at expressing yourselves through art. And, how can I forget ‘The Ospreys Boys’ singing and dancing to “I want it that way” at our class party.
But beyond the adventures and the lessons what I will remember the most about this year is the incredible growth I’ve seen in each of you. You have faced challenges with courage and determination, and you have shown kindness and empathy to your classmates and to those around you. ‘Mistakes are proof that you are trying!’’ and you have all shown a willingness to embrace your mistakes, using them as an opportunity to learn and improve.
As you prepare to move onto the next chapter of your lives, always remember the lessons you have learned and the friendships you have made here. Carry them with you as you continue to grow and learn.
Thank you for an amazing year of unforgettable memories. I am grateful to have been your teacher and to end with a quote from my favourite book - The boy, The Mole, The Fox and The Horse by Charlie Mackesy “What’s your best discovery?” asked the Mole. “That I’m enough as I am.”

VICE PRINCIPAL CURRICULUM
“Life isn’t about finding yourself. Life is about creating yourself.”― George Bernard Shaw
The commitment and capacity to achieve of our students at NLCS Dubai never ceases to amaze me. The willingness to throw themselves into a new extracurricular activity or academic society, to engage with a challenging Nicholson Lecture or simply to strive for excellence in the classroom is what sets our highly successful young people apart from their counterparts elsewhere. It is the reason why our former students return to visit us speaking of the confidence they found when starting university with broader horizons and more developed skill sets than their peers. Our class of 2024 are no different. They have taken on George Bernard Shaw’s mantra that one’s future should not be allowed to fall into place, but should be influenced by taking the initiative and driving yourself forward, being determined to succeed and having the lasting commitment to do so.
Our Sixth Form Open Evening, an opportunity to showcase our wonderful new common room and café facilities to students and parents, was a particularly strong example of our students taking the lead and showcasing the exceptional skills they develop in preparing for the next step in their educational journeys. Tasked with informally presenting themselves and their school to a room full of unfamiliar faces and answering unplanned questions about all facets of IB learning, NLCS education and their own educational stories, they responded maturely, professionally and with great warmth, impressing all in attendance and drawing glowing praise from visiting families. During my time at North London Collegiate School, the knowledge that every day I will be working with such capable, collegiate and modest (in most cases!) students has been a significant motivating factor in wanting to make NLCS Dubai the best school it can be. It allows our teachers to be ambitious, hold the highest expectations for every individual and to enjoy working collaboratively with students to achieve these. It ensures that all of our students are active in driving their own future prospects forwards and creating their best possible self.
Vice Principal Curriculum NLCS Dubai
VICE PRINCIPAL DIRECTOR OF STUDIES
I have always found the rich heritage of the NLCS family to be a source of inspiration. When I joined NLCS Dubai in its second year of operation we were but a fledgling member of the group, small in number but great in spirit and ambition. We drew on the strength of the ethos of our family, and used this to help us grow, as the saying goes ‘mighty oaks from little acorns grow’. Now as one of the largest NLCS schools our efforts have come to fruition, and we are proud to be the leading IB school in the region.
It is in the pioneering spirit of NLCS, and in honour of former headmistress Dr Sophie Bryant, that NLCS Dubai’s Bryant Award was born. Dr Bryant was not only a renowned educator and the first woman in the UK to receive a DSc, but an avid sportswoman who climbed the Matterhorn on two occasions. Carrying on this spirit of adventure, I was especially proud that over 100 of our young students took part in this new award, developing their outdoor skills and engaging in service learning and skill development too.
As the history of NLCS Dubai develops our pioneering journey continues, and we all have a part to play in celebrating and fostering our ethos. This year we say goodbye to our Vice Principal Academic, Mr Snape, whose leadership and commitment to excellence have been central to the high academic standards we enjoy today. He will be sadly missed, but as with every member of the NLCS family his time at the school and contribution to our journey will not be forgotten. I wish him the best of luck as he moves on to his next adventure.
PRINCIPAL PASTORAL CARE
It has been another wonderful year at NLCS Dubai. As I write this, students and staff are starting to look towards the summer holidays that are twinkling on the horizon, and all the wonderful adventures in store for July and August
This year House spirit has gone from strength to strength. Sports Day, House Music, House Chess and House Debating have been absolute highlights, alongside the newly established House Fiction and the everpopular House Basketball. It is in these areas that we consistently see students embracing the ethos of NLCS, trying themselves out, embedding the feeling of community and genuinely demonstrating that they are part of something so much bigger than oneself. As we conclude this year, students are starting their new leaderships roles in Houses, and it has been an absolute privilege to hear them articulate their love and passion for their respective Houses, but also demonstrate the importance of giving back, and the desire to work alongside the school for continual development and progress.
It has been wonderful this year to have parents so involved in the school community. House Dinners and the Community Iftar were fantastic community events, and the parental support at sports, music and arts events has been amazing.
Founder’s Day was again a beautiful occasion that binds our family of NLCS schools together and it is a wonderful opportunity to remind the community of what a very special place our school is. There was time to reflect on the legacy of our founders, listen to Mr. Locke and Avdesh’s speeches, centered around connectivity, and enjoy readings and musical performances.
I look forward to seeing everyone back in school in August, ready for a new year of learning
Have a wonderful holiday.
Warmest regards, Emma Dawson
Vice Principal Pastoral Care NLCS Dubai
Georgia Ward Assistant Principal Head of Hafeet House
We have had a busy and fast paced year in which many new Hafeet students have joined our pack. The Hafeet family is growing and we are welcoming our new students to join the community we have built with open arms. I am always so proud of how warm and friendly all students in Hafeet are and how quickly new joiners feel at home. I wanted to use this opportunity to officially thank the Hafeet leadership team for all their efforts this year. Without their constant support and leadership, I could not have done my job! Thank you to our House Captain, Hannah Khan. I wish her all the best in her new adventures after leaving NLCS. I would also like to congratulate our new House Captain Naael Mausoof, who I am sure will do a fantastic job. Also, congratulations to Mona Van den Abeele on her appointment as Sports Captain, this is very well deserved.
Well…I can’t say that we have official won any competitions this year, but we have tried! I have seen Hafeetians push themselves out of their comfort zone and try new things, all in the name of House competitions. It is really the resilience and determination of every student who has taken part that I want to congratulate! How can I forget our magnetic and winning Fame performance from House Music! I truly believe we deserved to win House Song as we had the most spirit and collegiate approach to the competition. A big thank you to the band, who were phenomenal and to the solo dancers, who gave it their all.
As we end the year we have to say farewell to some members of Hafeet, who I send my best wishes to for their future endeavors. I hope that they always carry a little bit of yellow in their hearts as they move onto their next chapters in life and do not forget the spirit of collegiality and collectivism that they had as part of the Hafeet family. For all of our returning staff and students, have a fabulous and well deserved break over the summer and I look forward to seeing you all again in the new academic year.
Chris May
Assistant Principal Head of Jais House
As I come to the end of my seventh year as Big Boss of Jais I want to use this opportunity to reflect on the past the present and the future of the House. At the start of August 2017, I arrived in Dubai to find a school not finished but an opportunity to create something special in this crazy wonderful city. Those of use who were there at that point, staff, students and parents alike, took a leap of faith whilst knowing that the next few years would be incredibly hard work. And yes, they were! Challenges were overcome, problems were solved but most importantly relationships were built, and we now have the amazing community that is NLCS Dubai.
On that first day of school, I remember so clearly meeting some very wide-eyed young people who would help me create Jais House. They had no idea about the journey they would take with me, but I was determined to give them ownership of their house. It was that small group of around 28 kids who were the founding members of Jais who created what we all recognise now. They were the builders, the creators, and their legacy lives on in every single present member of the House. This year, for me, is a special one as some of our departing G12 students have completed their secondary education alongside me for the last seven years. Others have departed along the way, and many have joined in the fun but the OG Grade 6’s of 2017/2018 will always have a special place in my heart as not only were they OG Jais but I also got to teach them geography for the year which was great fun! So, congratulations to our graduating class of 2024, old and new. I wish you all the best for the future as you spread your claws and travel across planet earth for the next step in your lives.
As is tradition, and keeping with the idea of celebrating the past I would like to formally thank the leadership team of Jais that handed over their roles at the start of Term 3 this year. Ethan, Francesco, Millie, Tala, Leo and Leggy, you did an incredible job, one that the new cohort of leaders will have to live up to. Many of you have gone onto other roles for the existing year, building on your portfolio, but I think, without annoying anyone, your tenure was one of, if not the most successful in terms of efficiency, planning and participation. We then welcomed in a new cohort of House leaders who have been working hard this last term to maintain the drive of the House and also create new ways that our students can engage in the wider life of the school. We welcomed, Karim, Tanisha, Max, Viola, Tom and Maya to their roles within Jais but also a number of students were selected for new roles that will ultimately bring our core values into everything we do as a House. Maxima as Wellbeing Ambassador, Francesco as Global Awareness Ambassador, Anika as Service Ambassador, Alex as Societies Ambassador and Millie as Enrichment Ambassador. Seren, Aleyna, Allegra and Jude also have created their new role as New Student Ambassadors responsible for welcoming new Jais Bears whether they are moving from G5 up to G6 or coming to the school as new students. Finally, our School Councilors; Muhammed, Raaga, Zarya, Anika and Shaza who have been instrumental in gaining student voice and running awareness events. All of the above have titles or roles but it would be remiss of me to not mention collectively the huge number of students who have stepped up and competed for their House, engaged in sports and creative arts opportunities, been running or attending societies and clubs…the list is endless. NLCS Dubai provides so much for its students and I am so proud that so many of our House are grasping these opportunities with both hands.
So, what about my eighth year…well, I am still going to be here, I still demand everyone to participate, I still have a somewhat messy office (this will NEVER change) but I also have a feeling that the successes and growth of Jais will continue as we all move forward. We came first and second in so many events this year, I know that we can step it up even further. Our spirit is strong but in order to win, everyone, whoever they are must work hard for the House. When we win, the feeling of pride and happiness is palpable amongst the students but when we don’t, it is often because people who can do, didn’t do and that is our mission in 2024/25. When we work together, we are unstoppable and lets be honest, there needs to be more blue ribbons in that trophy cabinet. We will have many newbies joining us and swelling our numbers even more, lets welcome them all with open arms, lets model what it is to be a Jais Bear and let’s win everything we possibly can.
Mr May (Still an OG HOH)
Assistant Principal Head of Javi House
After our successes last year, culminating in winning the House Cup, Javi got off to a fantastic start to Term 1 winning the House Quiz, and placing second in House Public Speaking. As soon as House Competitions started, you could sense the eagerness from the Javi students and their readiness to excel in every task presented to them. Students have been keen to take part in House competitions and are determined to repeat last year’s success. We discovered that House Song was not our forte, but managed a return to glory with our outstanding House Football performances.
I have been so proud of each and every one of them so far- the older students are modelling a positive ‘we can conquer anything thrown at us’ attitude, and the younger students are excited to try themselves out and be a part of such a successful team. It is an absolute pleasure watching them all grow and develop into young adults and leaders of the future.
It was a pleasure to see some familiar faces, and some new ones, at House Dinner and a lovely evening was had by all. It is very reassuring knowing that parents are so supportive of the House and their children.
Term 2 was another extremely busy term for Javi, with a House Competition most weeks- some weeks having two! Students prepared and performed in ‘Annie Jr’, Grade 10 completed their Personal Projects and PCUPS and House Leadership interviews took place with a record number of applicants for each position. Javi members have demonstrated their usual motivation and dedication to both their academic work and their House commitments. Sports Day displayed our fantastic team work- we definitely had the most supportive house- in terms of motivation and noise! House debating was a fantastic event and the students excelled in their efforts, even though we may have been pipped at the post by the opposition adding a single work to the motion, altering the debate considerably. House badminton, netball and basketball were all fiercely fought- some we won, some we didn’t, but like the phoenix in our logo, we continue to be reborn. House music was a brand new, somewhat unknown, addition to the calendar- showcasing the musical talents of our wonderful house members.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for your continued support of Javi, we definitely couldn’t do it without you all. I would like to wish our outgoing student leadership team a huge thank you for all your efforts this year, and I look forward to working with the incoming team next year.
Assistant Principal Head of Yibir House
The trademark enthusiasm among Yibir students for House Competitions was once again on display this year, with students demonstrating their talent and work ethic. Despite early disappointment with a last place in the House Quiz, Term 1 brought numerous successes, with Yibir clinching the top spot in both House Football and House Public Speaking. House Song, a firm fixture on the NLCS Term 1 calendar, saw students at their very best as the entire Yibir House came together to plan, practice and perform ‘I’m Still Standing’ by Elton John. A wonderful band, choreography and singing saw Yibir take second place. Away from House Competitions, the House Dinner was a lovely evening attended by parents, students and staff, and it was pleasure to see both familiar and new faces.
Term 2 brought another jampacked calendar of House Competitions, and students rose to the challenge with aplomb. The strength of Yibir House was evident with our success in House Music, with stellar performances across all categories. Additionally, the Yibir Student leadership showed their strategical nous by playing the joker card in House Basketball and taking home double points with victory in the competition. More sporting success came at Sports Day, with students from across all grades playing their part as Yibir clinched first place. Other highlights include the school production of Annie, directed by Yibir’s very own Mr. Clench, while the International Picnic saw students from across all houses celebrate and share their culture.
At this point, I would like to say a massive thank you to all Yibir students and staff who put in such hard work to make our House a strong and welcoming family. To our outgoing leadership team, thank you for all your efforts over the past 12 months, and I look forward to working with our new student leaders in the coming academic year.

AARAV LAUNGANI
As our school community rapidly grows, so does our collective responsibility to be the best for the world; the growth from the BIG 4 to BIG 6 is a testament to that fact. As a member of the newly appointed BIG 6, I recognise the role I have in not only upholding but also providing avenues to amplify our core values of care, courtesy and consideration beyond our school’s walls. With this position, I hope for us to build bridges and foster deeper connections with our wider community, enriching and enhancing the thriving culture of inclusivity, understanding and service that defines our school. By doing so, we will be providing students with invaluable opportunities for personal growth and social impact. I would like to say thank you to the school community for entrusting me with this position, and I promise to lead by example, by listening and with pride.
ASHOK MITTAL
Stepping into the position of the Big 6 is not about authority or prestige, it signifies a commitment to acting as a role model for our peers and the younger students. It is about embodying and upholding our school’s ethos with dignity and passion. This role allows us to act as a liaison between students and faculty, ensuring that all students can benefit from an equally challenging and enriching educational environment. Embracing this role is an extraordinary privilege that offers us the chance to contribute to our school's legacy of excellence. We are committed to not just upholding the traditions and achievements of those who came before us but also to forging new paths that will inspire and empower future generations to come.
LEONARDO SCHIPANI
A member of the BIG 6 should represent the characteristics every student aims to strive towards in their journey here at NLCS Dubai. Having this position gives us the opportunity to lead and develop a better school community through the means of collaboration and hard work. It is with immense excitement that I get to be part of the BIG 6 this upcoming year.
IMAAD BANDALI
Being a member of the Big 6 here at NLCS Dubai is a prestigious opportunity to serve our school and give back to a community that makes us feel comfortable and confident. We act as a bridge between the student body, the faculty, and the school administration. Fostering a school environment where satisfaction and well-being are prioritized forges a path for academic success, one of our school’s pillars. Moreover, it is a collective responsibility to lead by example and understand the importance of upholding the standards set by previous Big 4 members with integrity, respect, and compassion to provide an indelible experience for all members of the NLCS family.
SANNAT ODHRANI
Enabling students to have the means to constantly aim higher and dream bigger emulates our responsibility as Big 6. We have the amazing opportunity to ensure that every member of the school community feels supported in their endeavors, by advocating for the needs of students, alongside service to the school, and the wider community.
Becoming a member of the NLCS Dubai Big Six is a privilege I am incredibly proud to have been given. Since my first day at NLCS, it has been clear how important the role is, and how it extends far beyond the title. I understand that we have the opportunity to live the NLCS core values of care, courtesy, and consideration, to act as role models for other students whilst ensuring everyone has the means to voice their opinions or concerns. I will aim to lead by example, motivating with passion, whilst providing opportunities to allow our fantastic student body to flourish and grow. This honour will not be taken for granted, and as part of the Big Six, I look forward to maintaining the excellent work of our role models, the Big 4.
AVDESH (Senior Student)
Wrapping up our time at NLCS Dubai, I’ve come to realise that my journey with the Big 4 has been nothing short of an adventure – a blend of leadership, laughter, and invaluable lessons learned. Reflecting on this past year, each moment, each event, or discussion, has been a step in our collective journey and my own personal growth.
We’ve had our share of memorable times. Whether it was unleashing our inner “India Wale” during the celebrations of International Day (my personal favourite), to our tinsel-laden, albeit slightly off-key, performance of 12 Weeks of NLCS or even the Founder’s Day video, a masterpiece born from 72 takes and countless laughs. These moments have become markers of our time together. Serving as the Global Awareness Ambassador has been a lesson in the true meaning of leadership—it’s been about forging connections and fostering an environment of mutual respect and diversity. This role has reiterated to me that leadership is truly about working together, towards a shared vision, and not simply leading the charge. I owe a huge thank you to my fellow Big 4 – Omar, Naba, and Salayla. Seeing our collective visions become realities has been one of the most rewarding experiences of this journey. We’ve worked together to (hopefully) leave slightly large shoes to fill, for those to follow.
Working as the Enrichment Ambassador for Big 4 was an enlightening and formative experience, that provides me with opportunities that not only helped me grow as a person, but also helped to enrich the school community. During the year I had within this role, I was able to communicate with the school body and helped to come up with solutions to issues experienced by the community, ranging from planning initiatives to help with connecting the school community to helping other Big 4 members with their duties. Above all, my favourite experience was helping to plan the Class of 2024’s graduation, wherein I was able to change the layout of graduation to suit the desires of my grade. But the most impactful memory I had as Big 4 was during the last day of term assembly before winter break, singing the 12 Weeks of NLCS on stage, amongst my peers, as the experience of being able to see the entire school stand up and sing lyrics that we had came up with was like no other.
Through this process, as well as the duration of my time in Big 4, I learnt a lot. My communication and collaborative skills developed immensely, as it was of upmost importance to talk and work with all members of the school community, from my own peers to the Senior Leadership Team, in order to see change within the school. Overall, being part of Big 4 played a fundamental role within my experience as a 6th form member: our weekly meetings with the Senior Leadership Team never failed to make me laugh on a gloomy monday afternoon, and the sense of responsibility for something greater than myself has prepared me for my future life outside of NLCS.
Completing my entire Senior School journey at NLCS Dubai, my privileged position within the Big 4 has reflected my commitment to our wider community and my gratitude towards a school that has shaped me. Being the Wellbeing Ambassador for just over a year has allowed me to enrich my understanding of leadership itself, improve my public speaking skills and push me outside of my comfort zone. I have been able to view the vibrant and diverse student body from new perspectives, properly and wholly immersing myself in the very mechanics of the school. Meeting new students, proposing new initiatives, and collaborating on projects with my peers has been an honour and will continue to positively influence my approach to leadership in the future.
Thank you fellow Big 4, our teachers, and thank you NLCS Dubai!
As I reflect on my time as your Societies Ambassador, I can't help but feel a profound sense of gratitude and nostalgia. I can honestly say that nothing will be quite like the past 2 years. My journey as part of the Big 4 has been an unforgettable opportunity. Whether it was our weekly meetings with the Senior Leadership Team or working together to develop new ideas, this experience has helped us all reflect and grow as a people and future leaders. The role of Societies Ambassador has been a lesson in the essence of leadership. It's entailed not just managing a diverse group of societies but also engaging with the emerging leaders who would soon step into our shoes as the Big 6. I remember being a chair of Med soc and the competition between Med Soc and Econ soc for the best society (Med soc was clearly much higher quality). Witnessing the growth of societies, as they flourished and expanded their memberships by sharing their passions with younger students, has been inspiring and insightful to myself and others.
Among the events that truly stand out, the experience of organizing and participating in the 6th form revisionist Aladdin (Aladeen) performance. In my opinion, it was an amazing event where we not only entertained our friends but also created lasting memories together. Likewise, the spirited rendition of the 12 weeks of NLCS Christmas carol. Despite its occasional hiccups due to my questionable ability to sing and the inability of others to time their lines correctly, it served as a reminder of our school's unity and what we can do as part of the Big 4. As we prepare to part ways and embark on new adventures in university, I look back on our time together with a sense of fondness. I hope that the friendships we’ve formed and the lessons we’ve learned will serve as a solid foundation for the future. Thank you to the teachers, friends and the Big 4 to have made these 2 years what they are, and I hope our next chapter is equally filled with endless possibilities and new opportunities for growth.
Reflective – Looking back at this academic year there have been so many wonderful opportunities for students to develop as IB learners. I am always amazed at NLCS students’ capacity to undertake so much in their time at school, always done with enthusiasm and a desire to succeed.
Knowledgeable – Grade 10 students have all undertaken a Personal Project where they have chosen a learning goal to enable them to create a project inspired by a passion of theirs. The completion of the project has seen students gaining a multitude of new skills and knowledge which they have shared with the school community in their exhibition.
Inquirers – The MYP is designed to enable all students to develop their ability to inquire effectively through criteria A. This year, departments have focused on enabling learners to create their own inquiry questions in units to allow students the ability to shape their learning experiences.
Risk Takers – Numerous students have completed the Bryant Award and Duke of Edinburgh Award this year, enabling them to complete hikes and camping experiences independently.
Principled – All students have developed their awareness of how to ethically utilise developing technologies to enhance their work. Having an awareness of how artificial intelligence can be used to support their studies is vital in this day and age, but the way in which it is used should always be ethical and principled.
Balanced – Our ever-growing ECA provision in school is allowing MYP students to try themselves out and develop interests and passions outside of the classroom.
Communicators – I have been delighted to see so many students contribute to events this year demonstrating their ability to communicate effectively. Students have shared their interests in Nicholson lectures, student led assemblies and house speaking competitions with confidence and flair.
Thinkers – As I walk around the school and observe lessons, it is a pleasure to see how teachers are encouraging students to develop their critical thinking skills, placing new knowledge in real world contexts. Interdisciplinary learning across subjects has been a real success this year allowing students to see subjects from differing perspectives and make new connections.
Open Minded – NLCS students are fantastic at debating. House debating this year really demonstrating open minded thinking and the ability to look at arguments from different opinions and angles.
Caring – The service as action projects this year have really demonstrated how caring students at NLCS are. The trip to the Maldives saw students working to clean the ocean floor and rejuvenate coral. Community Projects in grade 8 have advocated for a variety of causes and the school charity committee has raised money for a number of charities sponsored by The Red Crescent.
As we move into Year 8 of NLCS Dubai, I wait with anticipation to see how NLCS students will further grow holistically as well as academically. I am proud to work with such a dedicated and talented group of young people who really embody the ethos of ‘To whom much is given, much is required.” The future is exciting.

Thomas Jacobs Head of Mathematics
The corridors of mathematics have been abuzz with activity and enthusiasm throughout this year, prompting a moment of reflection on our collective achievements. I extend my sincere congratulations to all students for their diligence and progress in class, with particular acknowledgment to our grade 10 and 12 students who successfully navigated the MYP and DP examinations. I also express profound gratitude to our mathematics faculty for their unwavering commitment and guidance, which has fostered an environment conducive to student success in the subject.
This year, senior students seized the opportunity to participate in the UKMT Mathematics Challenges, and I am delighted to report that so many participants earned recognition with a Bronze, Silver, or Gold award. Additionally, NLCS ventured into the Dubai Mathematics Super League for the first time, where our teams secured an impressive 4th place among 40 esteemed schools in Dubai.
The Nicholson lectures were a standout feature of the year, showcasing two outstanding presentations from the mathematics department. Mr. Isley delivered an illuminating discourse on Mathematics in Law, shedding light on recent instances of mathematical misuse in legal proceedings and its repercussions on judgments. I also delved into the intriguing realm of Infinity, exploring its multifaceted applications and dispelling common misconceptions. While the classroom serves as the daily stage for mathematical discovery, Mathematics Week emerged as a special event uniting students and educators to showcase extraordinary feats. Themed around 'Collaboration in Mathematics,' the week commenced with a discussion on Andrew Wiles, the renowned mathematician whose collaborative efforts led to the resolution of Fermat’s elusive last theorem. Student-led assemblies organized by the mathematics society further explored contemporary applications of mathematics, including probability in the stock market and the utilization of quadratic equations in sports.
I extend heartfelt thanks to all students and teachers for their contributions in making this year a resounding success in the realm of mathematics!

Zihao Ji Vice chair of Math society
Commonly, when mathematics is mentioned, it evokes images of numbers, calculations, and complex axioms. Yet, this view scarcely scratches the surface of its expansive domain. Mathematics has been a fundamental aspect of human life throughout history, serving as a subject that is considered the universal language across cultures and eras. It enables engineers, among others, to express and share complex ideas across the barriers of linguistic and cultural boundaries. Physicists utilize the principles of calculus to comprehend the rate at which momentum changes; similarly, chemists depend on the Schrödinger equation to address problems within quantum mechanics. Thus, a robust understanding of mathematics is indeed the cornerstone of success in these scientific endeavours.
Our society fosters an environment where everyone can freely share their opinions. Each session would be centered around a specific mathematical subject delivered by our chair. After that, a group discussion on this subject will be made to enhance everyone’s understanding of this subject and spark their interest of it. This is an excellent opportunity for younger students to engage with older peers. This interaction provides a valuable perspective on the academic and professional journey ahead, giving them a clearer view of what to expect in their future studies and careers. Furthermore, it also presents a fantastic opportunity for those who are deciding to major in mathematics or any other scientific subjects, as we invite guest speakers from external academic or professional institutions to provide students with insight into what studying these subjects at the university level entails.
Our society is designed to help you develop your logic and problem-solving skills, as many of our quizzes do not require extensive mathematical knowledge but rather demand careful thinking. Therefore, joining our society will be immensely beneficial for your future studies and personal development.
If you are interested in developing your math skills or your logic. Do not hesitate, math society is the place for you! Any students from Grade 6 onwards are invited to attend Math Society, especially for those who have a strong passion in the field of mathematics.
Head of English
Students throughout the Senior School have continued to explore the depths and breadths of the literary world this year.
Our explorations began with English Subject Week, in which we delved into the power of language and its influence upon ourselves and others. It was fantastic to see so many students attend the ‘English Quiz’, as well as Ms. Edden’s insightful lecture on archetypes and escapism in Harry Potter. The Literary Society produced an engaging assembly on the influence of language in the everyday world. It is so pleasing to see so many students involved and interested in the subject of English.
Our journey continued as we boarded an actual boat when Grade 9 attended a performance of Macbeth on the QE2. The students were able to put script to stage and understand the various different ways that actors may interpret their characters. Shakespeare is meant to be seen, not just read, and it was wonderful to see the students appreciate this experience on their return to school.
Grade 6 and 7 have expanded their reading beyond the classroom this year as they have committed to personal wider reading projects. The students produced some truly encapsulating one-page responses to their wider reading, demonstrating the importance of personal interpretation and the freedom to explore ideas outside of lessons. It has been a pleasure to see such a range of engagement with our texts of study and beyond. It shows the importance of reading, and the understanding that there is a book for everyone out there – you just need to find the right one!
The English House competitions have continued to grow. We saw a thrilling Spelling Bee take place in January, the fierce competitiveness of teams in House Debating in March, and our new opportunity to submit their creative works to House Fiction in April. English is an integral part of our daily lives, and it has been wonderful to see students utilise their various skills within the subject to contribute towards their House.
It can be said without a doubt, that every teacher within the English department simply LOVES English. We love talking about it, we love debating it, and we love recommending books to you (as well as receiving recommendations from you)! It has been a pleasure to continue sharing our passions both within the department and across the wider school this year. We are excited to see what further developments next year will bring.
Rameen Ali Chair of Literature society
“Literature always anticipates life. It does not copy it but molds it to its purpose.” - Oscar Wilde
Upon reflecting on the strides made by the Literary Society this academic year, it becomes evident that we have delved into a myriad of thought-provoking topics, placing a distinct emphasis on the role of women in literature. Our weekly sessions have been a dynamic blend of academic presentations intertwined with lively debates, discussions, and intriguing perspectives.
The commencement of the academic year was marked by English Week, where we orchestrated a compelling assembly on the profound impact of literature on young minds, delving briefly into the intersection of AI and writing. English Week featured a plethora of activities, quizzes, a distinguished guest speaker, and an immersive "drop everything and read" initiative throughout the week.
This year, the society deliberately broadened our understanding of literature beyond the confines of the classroom. This expansion was epitomised through a series of student-led presentations covering diverse topics, ranging from the influence of YA literature to a deep dive into Voltaire's "Candide." An exciting highlight for us was the publication of the inaugural volume of the Literary Society magazine "Inked." This publication encapsulated the essence of our weekly sessions, exploring themes rooted in the past and present. "Inked" includes numerous book reviews and showcases the accomplishments of two members who have successfully authored their books. The Literary Society serves as a welcoming space for individuals passionate about literature, providing a platform to share their ideas.
Looking ahead, our aspirations for the society include fostering increased participation from budding readers and writers. We envision an even more vibrant year, with more activities, additional guest speakers, and a continued commitment to creating an inclusive space for literary enthusiasts.
The Science corridors have been a hive of activity this year, with exciting lessons, practical work and a huge array of popular ECAs and Societies taking place. We owe a big thank you to both the students for their engagement and enthusiasm and also to our wonderful Science teachers for continuing to ignite student passion in this subject.
The Medical Society has been a particular highlight this year. Under the new leadership of Haryssa, Juliette and Nadine, the Medical society has become even bigger and better than ever before, welcoming more students than ever to our sessions and starting up our first ever NLCS Dubai MedSoc Instagram page. We have performed practical work to identify different types of bacteria, investigated the importance of tendons and ligaments during a chicken foot dissection and have collaborated with the Psychology society to learn more about the placebo effect. We have also been lucky enough to welcome Dr. Laurence Aulnette to school to deliver a talk about her work as a child Psychiatrist in France.
The Science Society was inspiring for all its members and participants from Senior school. Students developed investigation and communication skills by conducting engaging presentations and experiments about sustainable and renewable energies and the production, management, disposal, and alternatives for plastics. During this academic year and with the leadership of Emma, Tomoki and Guanyu, students from grades nine to ten had the opportunity to run experiments about thermal energy, create biodegradable plastics based on corn starch, and apply separation techniques used to remove microplastics from contaminated water among other lab experiences. On important highlight is that students worked collaboratively and effectively to launch two volumes for the Science Society magazine: Renewable Energies and Plastics and Bioplastics. Interesting presentations, engaging discussions, fun experiences, and learning is how members and participants describe the society.
Thank you to Arianna and Wanyi for their contribution and commitment to the engineering society. Their efforts to build a cloud chamber to detect cosmic rays was a highlight. Also thank you to Yash who has taken over the reins this year. He has taken a bold step in a new direction by setting up an engineering challenge to interested students. The F1 in schools competition has been launched this year and we are hoping to have an inspired team to compete in the finals in the next academic year.
Particle Physics" ECA, launched in September, has ignited great enthusiasm among students, exploring the complex world of particle physics. Led by Mrs. Sotiropoulou initially, students embarked on an illuminating journey learning about the composition of various particles—baryons, mesons, and leptons—and their intricate interactions. They delved into the mechanisms of particle detection in advanced detectors and the role of accelerators in this process. Transitioning into the second term, students assumed leadership roles, crafting and delivering presentations to both incoming and experienced participants, fostering a vibrant learning community within our school."
Redondo Head of Modern Foreign Languages
As we reflect on the past school year, it is evident that our journey through the vibrant world of Modern Foreign Languages has been exceptional. From school-wide events to immersive experiences, the MFL department has sought to enrich the understanding and appreciation of diverse cultures and celebrate the linguistic journeys of our students.
MFL Week was an early highlight, igniting our enthusiasm for languages in a myriad of ways. We delved into the essence of German culture as we constructed our own version of the Berlin Wall, a symbolic reminder of twentieth century history. On Spanish day, students were invited to sway to the rhythm of flamenco and salsa, mastering steps from the heart of Spain and Latin America. The taste of alfajores transported us to the bustling streets of Lima, embracing the flavours of Peru. Meanwhile, our French breakfast offered a sensory journey through the quaint cafes of Paris, savoring every croissant and pain au chocolat. Mandarin day offered an ensemble of serene traditional music played by a variety of instruments and the graceful strokes of Chinese calligraphy were taught to the students.
Throughout the year, we celebrated other cultural milestones. La Chandeleur brought our French students together to savour the delight of crêpes, while our Grade 12 students got dressed up to sample a tasting menu Downtown at Fouquet’s. In February our whole school Chinese/Lunar New Year celebration dazzled with an unforgettable lion dance, symbolizing prosperity and good fortune.
The department’s ventures beyond the school gates truly broadened our students’ horizons. Trips to Singapore and Madrid were unforgettable, offering immersive experiences where language came alive in authentic contexts. Exploring bustling markets, tasting local delicacies, and engaging with native speakers, the students were able to fortify their cultural understanding and linguistic prowess, fostering lifelong connections.
None of this would have been possible without the unwavering dedication of the MFL staff, who tirelessly nurture language skills and ignite the students’ curiosity.
Equally deserving of gratitude is our MFL Society, whose leadership and initiative have fostered a sense of unity within our MFL community. Through initiatives like the buddy system, they have strengthened ties with the Junior School, paving the way for future generations of language enthusiasts.

It now operates in over 140 countries and is a prominent opportunity to discover new interests and talents. In order to qualify for the award, each level of Bronze, Silver or Gold must meet differing requirements for the amount of time they must spend on a voluntary activity, physical activity and developing a skill.
The award consists of the four core components, which include the physical aspect, volunteering aspect, the skill section as well as the Adventurous Journey. These are set in order to encourage participants to grow their skill set and develop their effort and commitment to these range of activities. It is essential that the participants maintain their choice of sport, a skill or activity they enjoy as well as give back to the community through service and volunteer work.
Duke of Edinburgh is an integral extracurricular activity within our NLCS community. It consists of weekly meetings as an ECA after school in order to prepare for the adventurous journey by learning about tent building, cooking, and what to bring with you. Additionally, it allows the DOFE staff team to check over our logs on the Online Record Book and make sure we maintain our consistency of adding the logs throughout the year. Duke of Edinburgh has contributed the the sense of community and teamwork amongst the students, through the time the groups spend together, to the resilience shown on the hike as well as the determination and supporting atmosphere the students bring to each session and on the Adventurous Journeys. We recognize those students who complete all their logs as well as adequately present and create their group presentations through an awards ceremony in Assembly. This highlights their achievements and signifies their passing of their level, from Bronze to Silver and eventually to Gold.
Our school enlists the help of Mountain Quest which provides us with a team of trained professionals who assist us during the hike and make sure we are navigating correctly as well as reminding us of the safety procedures. They assess how well we do on our adventurous journey, so it is essential that participants adhere to the rules. Additionally, we have specific teachers within NLCS who mentor certain groups and check up with their logs and activities for Duke of Edinburgh.
Although this experience is unlike any other and full of fun-filled memories, there was certain challenges and obstacles the students will have faced throughout their involvement. Students must learn to persevere and attempt to make compromises as this is often required when working collaboratively in a group. Moreover, keeping up to date with the logs as well as making sure to take pictures and make sure your logs contribute to your overall SMART goal are significant areas which can prove challenging as they require dedication and commitment.
Completion of the Duke of Edinburgh comes with a lasting impact on the participants. It provides them with a range of new skills as well as character development and growth through their commitment to their activities as well as their endurance and perseverance during the adventurous journey. We strongly encourage new students to embrace the challenge and experience this transformative journey which they have the opportunity to do so in Grade 9.

This year at NLCS Dubai we introduced a new subject in Group 3 Individual and Societies: Global Politics!
Students have been enjoying learning the subject specific vocabulary and deconstructing the systems and processes happening at a global, regional, national and local level. Students have learned to use political theory and apply it to a variety of real word cases. Students also take part in a political engagement activity where they investigate a local political issue for themselves and write a report about it.
The Politics Society now has a large membership involving students from grade 7-12. This year Cara Connolly and Mayya Mattu are the co-chairs of the society. They have run weekly activities on subjects such as Panda diplomacy, migration to the EU, the impact of the World Economic Forum, COP 28 in Dubai and the use of AI in the political sphere.
There have been lots of changes in the First School Library this year. Firstly, there were the physical changes to the library which was turned into an ‘Enchanted Reading Garden’ over the summer. A calming pale green wall colour along with lots of comfy cushions and even more easily accessible book boxes, make this the perfect spot for our youngest students to browse for new books and share them with their friends. The next big change was the arrival of our new First School Library Coordinator, Mrs. Bowden, after Mrs. Mendoza left us in January. Mrs. Bowden was made to feel very welcome by everyone and is enjoying getting to know all the students, as well as discovering some new favourite stories.
Lots of exciting events have happened this year in the library. At the end of November, it was great to see parents and students enjoy our Winter Book Fair and during National Day celebrations students were excited to listen to Charlotte Jones share her story “The Zuggler in Dubai” about a strange little creature helping a new arrival settle into life in Dubai. At the end of February, everyone in the Junior School participated in many reading and book related activities as part of our Book Week. First School students enjoyed the Secret Readers and Moter Tongue Storytime sessions, where teachers and parents shared their favourite stories and read in their own languages. Bedtime Story Day was not only an opportunity to come to school in comfy pyjamas but also to share their favourite stories with older buddy readers. The week ended with Character Day parades, showing off all the costumes to great effect.
One final event before the close of the year was our Summer Book Fair. A great opportunity to stock up on summer reading materials.
Happy Reading! And remember, “You can find magic wherever you look. Sit back and relax, all you need is a book.” – Dr. Seuss
It has been an exciting year in the Buss Library! The students were all very impressed and happy with the transformation of the space into a lovely, peaceful desert oasis. We have huge sand dune decals, majlis seating, floor cushions and lamps for ambient lighting. The atmosphere is calm and inviting for our Lower School students – just what a library should be.
In Term 1, we had another incredibly successful and busy Winter Book Fair by BookWorm. Students and parents were able to browse and buy books from a huge selection, making it one of the most successful fairs in Dubai!
In February, Grade 2 had the exciting opportunity to visit the Emirates Literature Festival. They met author Lisa Thompson, listening to her talk about her latest book and got the chance to have their books signed too. Next came the Junior School Book Week which was a huge success. There were competitions to decorate classroom doors, design bookmarks and even photographing the most extreme places students could find to read. We had Bedtime Story Day where students (and staff) came to school in their comfiest pyjamas and enjoyed reading their favourite bedtime stories to each other. There were daily Book Trivia Quizzes, Drop Everything and Read, Secret Storytellers, Mother Tongue Story Time and Book Bingo! The week culminated in Book Character Day, where everyone came dressed as their favourite book character and joined in a parade. It was an incredible week, made possible by the Book Week Team and all the Junior School teachers and Teaching Assistants.
Every academic year, we have a new team of Library Leaders who volunteer to assist with checking books in and out, shelving, coding and the administration of the Buss Library. This year’s Library Leaders were:
Yixuan Li
Sebastian Glück
Caleb Scotson
Sienna Katounas
Hadley Durston
Akari Tanaka
Ayun Kang
The library continues to grow and develop its service; supporting curriculum needs, guiding students to discover new genres and authors, but most of all, encouraging the love of reading in all our students.
Happy Reading and remember “If you are going to get anywhere in life you have to read a lot of books.” Roald Dahl.
The Senior School library has been a hive of activity and innovation throughout the year, offering a dynamic space where students can engage with literature, ignite their imagination, and embark on intellectual journeys. From book fairs to murals, from competitions to online catalogues, each initiative has contributed to the rich tapestry of experiences that define our library as a vibrant centre of learning and community.
One of the first events of the year was the Emirates Literature Festival Chevron Readers Cup. Students from G5 – G7 read, reviewed, and quizzed each other on the assigned titles, in preparation for the opening round. The questions were fiendish and despite their valiant effort our teams did not make the final round, but all agreed that next year would be our year!
Book fairs, hosted by The Bookworm, are always highly anticipated. Students explored a diverse range of titles discovering new literary gems. The fairs not only promoted a love for reading but also supported the library's efforts to expand its collection, so thank you to all those who supported them.
Another highlight was our visit to the Emirates Literature Festival in February, where we had the privilege of listening to acclaimed author Phil Earle share his journey from reluctant reader to accomplished writer. His insights into his background with reading and the inspiration behind his literary endeavors left an indelible mark on all who attended. Through his words, we were reminded of the transformative power of storytelling and the boundless potential within each of us to craft our own narratives.
One of the most visually striking developments this year was the introduction of captivating murals adorning the library walls. Designed and created during the Library Murals ECA, they have not only enhanced the aesthetic appeal of the space but also served as a testament to the creativity and talent within our school community.
The dedication and assistance of library volunteers, whether from the Library Advocates ECA or the Duke of Edinburgh Award, have been invaluable in ensuring the smooth operation of the library. Whether shelving books or assisting fellow students, volunteers have played a crucial role in enhancing the overall library experience. Their commitment to service has contributed significantly to the welcoming atmosphere of the library.
Implementation of a new online library catalogue proved to be a game-changer in streamlining access to resources and facilitating research. Students have benefited from the convenience of searching for library resources from anywhere, at any time, thereby empowering independent learning and exploration. The user-friendly interface made navigating the library's collection a seamless experience for all.
Happy Reading! And remember, "Reading forces you to be quiet in a world that no longer makes a place for that."John Green
Angus Graham Head of Department
The Economics department is getting bigger and bigger. We now cater for 63 students across grades 11 and 12, compared to a much smaller cohort of 33 students last year. Next year we are likely to have just under 100 students across Grades 11 and 12.
The department has built a strong reputation on the back of consistent examination success, engaging lessons, a dynamic and forward-looking society and dare I say it the odd drop of fun. We pride ourselves on keeping it real in economics. That is, we try to make connections with the real world through real world examples as much as we can. The Grade 12s have engaged in a monumental struggle to get to the end of the course and as Mandela said, ‘it always seems impossible until it’s done’. And, now they have done it. Next stop, the examination.
The Grade 11s have made a great start on their economics journey. They have already submitted their first internal assessment piece and are already engaging with the great debates in Economics, such as that between the Keynesians and the Monetarists. Like those who have gone before them, they are getting a strong sense of Economics being less about money and more about economic well-being and access to vital resources. We teach the students that those who need good Economics the most are the disadvantaged and those without a voice. We are very strong in the department on economic development and economic growth.
The Economics Week was a great success. Mr. Graham delivered a monologue on the American political/economic situation from the Bernie Sanders’ perspective. Mr. Snape delivered a fabulous Nicholson lecture on behavioural economics. He skillfully showed us how we are being manipulated every step of the way when doing an online transaction for a budget flight. There was yet another Geo vs. Econ society debate in which there was enthusiastic participation from both Grade 11 and 12 economics and geography students. Finally, Leonardo, Ashok, Svarn, Viraj and Maxima did themselves proud and treated us to an excellent ‘Price is Right’ style activity in the Thursday assembly in which the theme of Information Asymmetry was at the forefront.
One good year flows into another.

It has been another busy and vibrant year in the Music department. From the first day of school back in August, students were able to shine with solo performances at Monday morning assemblies adding a wonderfully artistic start to each week. Our peripatetic music programme continued to run smoothly and in large numbers with hundreds of our students having lessons on a wide variety of different instruments and for voice.
The extra-curricular programme within the department again grew with new additions including Composition Clinic, run by Yiming Aizezi, a highly talented musician in grade 10 as well as new ensembles the Jazz Band and Chamber Choir, run by our newest teacher to the department, Ms. Byrnes. These ensembles worked tirelessly in term 1 towards the first large-scale concert of the year; the Senior Festive Recital. They were joined on stage by many other ensembles such as the Intermediate Ensemble, rock bands ‘Verbatim’ and ‘School of Rock’, Senior Strings, the Senior Orchestra and the Community Choir featuring students and teachers. Meanwhile, we had wonderful solo performances from Yicheng Liu on violin and Adrian Stritzelberger on piano. One of the highlights of the evening came from a performance of the whole of Grade 6 singing two festive numbers.
It was fantastic to see the whole grade come together to wow the audience and they brought a little humour too with their surprise kazoo interlude!. Term 2 saw a host of different musical opportunities take place. Senior House Music returned for the first time in a few years. Dozens of students entered the heats competing in three categories according to their abilities; emerging, intermediate and advanced. The students performed to be their House’s representative in the final. The final itself was a celebration of fantastic talent with the eventual winners being Avantika Rajesh of Jais (emerging), Trinity Oduneye-Braniff of Yibir (intermediate) and Yicheng Liu of Hafeet (advanced). Meanwhile, there was an ensemble competition with each House represented by a group of musicians who arranged a piece themselves. The eventual winners were Yibir with their performance of Adele’s ‘Set Fire to the Rain’. Well done to all students involved in the whole House Music competition.
Term 2 also saw Music week take place. The week began with an assembly by Mr Agius about fusions and the importance of looking far and wide for musical influences. The week also included a strings masterclass by our violin teacher, Ms. Eva Grasbeck, Live Lounge, a pop music gig in Budge square and a fascinating Nicholson lecture by Ms. Magdalena focusing on the prepared piano, a technique by experimental composer John Cage where miscellaneous items are inputted into a grand piano to completely change its sound. The week was rounded up by the Music Society who drew upon the support of the Jazz Band to deconstruct a song and its many elements to enlighten the audience as to how the ensemble puts it all together.
The term culminated with the traditional Founders Day ceremony with our musicians playing a key role. The Senior Orchestra performed Handel’s noble Baroque classic, ‘Hornpipe’ while the Senior Strings supported the whole school singing of ‘To Be a Pilgrim’ and ‘Where’re You Walk’. The ceremony ended with the procession which was accompanied by several soloists as well as our Flute Choir, led by Ms. Kelly.

NLCS Dubai is a school which embraces the idea of creating well-rounded individuals by providing opportunities in all areas such as the arts, sports, and academics. This is crucial to be able to allow students to express themselves through what they are most passionate about. A clear example of this value in action was displayed through the Grades 6-8 production this year. Annie Jr was a thrilling, invigorating, sensational production, which communicated the story of little orphan Annie but also exhibited the cast’s passion for performance. Everyone had an opportunity to participate, whether it be as an actor in the cast, a dancer, backstage or as a musician, there was a place for everyone to come together and create this phenomenal show.
Annie Jr was directed by Mr. Clench, who worked tirelessly and dedicated time and effort into pulling together the performance in time for opening night. The process towards being able to perform the musical required a great amount of determination and time from all members of the cast, crew and supporting staff. The cast of Annie Jr was able to perform an excellent show due to their immense commitment and dedication. They spent countless lunch times rehearsing in order to create a few scenes and dialogue into the final musical which was enjoyed by all.
The experience of being up on stage, performing to a live audience was invigorating as well as nerve wracking, especially with having younger grade sixes on stage, but everyone involved demonstrated their passion through there expressive performances and true passion for their role as actors, musicians or crew members.
Describe Annie in 3 words:
Ethan Abery: Enjoyable, Spectacular, an amazing experience
Ilan: Humorous, Joyful, Astonishing
Avantika Rajesh: Amusing, Witty, Eventful
Ms Rasha El Said Head of Arabic
This academic year, the Arabic department has been incredibly rewarding and educational as students have been exploring the cultural heritage of the UAE and beyond. They have engaged in experiences from visits to cultural centers to hands on activities in sustainable cities all contributing to a diverse and meaningful learning journey.
A highlight of this year was when 7th grade students visited the Sheikh Mohamed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Cultural Centre. This visit was more than a field trip; it was a dive into Dubai’s vibrant heritage. The center’s motto, "The doors are open and the minds are open " deeply resonated with students as they discovered the treasures within its walls. Guided tours through the museum shed light on Dubai’s past illustrating its transformation from beginning to the how it is today.
This trip was part of our curriculum unit titled "Exploring Our Local Area " designed to foster an appreciation for Dubai’s culture and prompt students to draw comparisons, with their hometowns. The trip provided value as students immersed themselves in the history of traditional houses grasping their architectural significance and understanding the unique designs that reflect their historical context.
Moreover, 9th grade students embarked on a trip to Masdar City in Abu Dhabi to explore environmental concepts. Masdar City, renowned for its sustainability practices, served as a setting for students to grasp the significance of eco friendly behaviors. The visit went beyond admiring architecture but to also delve into lessons on sustainability and recycling. Through our environmental studies unit our goal was to instill in students a sense of duty towards our planet. The trip to Masdar City provided them with exposure to technologies renewable energy options and creative approaches for a sustainable tomorrow. From learning about panels to understanding waste management strategies students gained knowledge and motivation to take on roles as caretakers for a better tomorrow.
Overall, the highlights of this academic year in our Arabic department reflect our commitment to holistic education that embraces cultural diversity, environmental responsibility, and hands on learning experience. These experiences not only broaden our students' horizons but also nurture in them a sense of curiosity, empathy, and global citizenship that are essential for their future endeavors.

As we look back on what we have achieved this academic year, we are filled with nothing but gratitude.
This first term was filled with our incredibly successful fundraising events: ‘Pinktober’ and ‘Festive Jumper Day’. First and foremost, our most successful fundraiser of the year, Pink Day, was a smashing success as we were able to raise a staggering 35,000AED for the Al Jalila Foundation for Breast Cancer Research. We would like to extend our immense gratitude to the Parent’s Guild whose incredible support allowed us to reach this goal. But it didn't stop there. The charitable spirit was alive during our Festive Jumper event, where an additional 14,000AED was raised.
In Term 2, a few highlights included our annual Book Drive and Ramadan Food Drive. These initiatives saw an overwhelming amount of support from our school community with overflowing boxes, filled with donated books and food for families in need.
As we look to the future, we are excited to announce the formation of our newly established Service Committee. This committee has furthered our commitment to giving back by introducing experiential service trips for students, providing them with unique opportunities for hands-on engagement with local communities. A group of 20 charity committee members have been hard at work creating proposals which they will pitch and put into action in the coming terms.
As our school community grows, so does our collective responsibility to be the best for the world, and this is exactly what has been exemplified this academic year. We are thrilled to announce that this year, alongside our service initiatives, we have been able to raise well over 50,000 dirhams, exceeding the committee’s targets!
This achievement goes beyond the numbers; it symbolizes our school community’s commitment to making a positive impact on the lives of others. Each dirham raised is a step towards a brighter future for those who are less fortunate, and it's a testament to the pillars of care, courtesy and consideration that define our school community. From the bottom of our hearts, we express our immense gratitude to all who have joined us in our mission to make a positive impact on the lives of others.
As we conclude this year, let's carry this spirit forward. We are just getting started, and we are confident that with your continued support and enthusiasm, we will achieve even more next year!

As we look back on what we have achieved this academic year, we are filled with nothing but gratitude.
Our world is an incredibly diverse and interesting place, that can’t stop but amaze us with its beauty. In a world where nature's delicate balance is increasingly threatened, the importance of sustainability and ecology cannot be overstated. These intertwined concepts serve as guiding principles for the responsible management of the Earth and highlight the critical need to balance human activities with the natural world. Therefore, the ability to detect, discuss and mitigate problems is becoming a highly demanded and useful skill for every person.

This year, the Eco-Committee took the lead in organizing educational discussions, enlightening our peers about the importance of conservation and the pressing issues facing our environment. Through external Zoom meetings and lectures, we sparked a sense of environmental stewardship and awareness that will undoubtedly echo in the hearts and minds of our school community for years to come. Through them, we’ve managed to connect with a new recycling company and provide their services to our school. This is an influential achievement, which helps unite all of our school community into one recycling campaign. The big leap in our journey of promoting and popularising the themes of Ecology was the launch of our online magazine with articles about a variety of topics that are linked under the roof of the major issue: Ecology.
As we look to the future, we are excited to announce the formation of our newly established Service Committee. This committee has furthered our commitment to giving back by introducing experiential service trips for students, providing them with unique opportunities for hands-on engagement with local communities. One of our most memorable moments was definitely the trip to COP28 in Expo City Dubai, where we got to learn so much about initiatives that local and global companies were implementing to encourage sustainability. We had the opportunity to attend many guest lectures and appreciate the measures the UAE is taking to promote ecofriendliness in the country.
Eco committee is open to anyone in senior school, specifically those interested in discussing environmental challenges and collaborating with sustainable companies. Also, if you are keen on looking at a career related to the environment in the future, then eco committee is definitely the place for you. Our sessions are always discussive and feature a variety of activities suitable for all age groups.
Embarking on a journey to Saudi Arabia was a transformative experience that enriched my life in numerous ways. Immersing myself in the rich culture, traditions, and daily life of this vibrant country allowed me to broaden my horizons, challenge my preconceptions, and forge meaningful connections with its people. As I reflect on my trip in Saudi Arabia, I am filled with gratitude for the valuable lessons learned and the unforgettable memories created with my peers.
Umrah involves a series of rituals performed in and around the holy city of Mecca, including Tawaf (circumambulation of the Kaaba), Sai (running between the hills of Safa and Marwa), and the symbolic shaving of the head or cutting of hair. Each of these acts holds profound spiritual significance, symbolizing devotion, humility, and submission to the will of Allah. I'm sure for us, this was a very memorable experience seeing the Kaaba instead of in videos. I'm sure even though it was a long and tiring journey, we did it together.
Visiting the Mosque, particularly the Masjid al-Haram in Mecca, is a deeply moving experience for pilgrims. As the holiest site in Islam, the mosque surrounds the Kaaba, the sacred structure towards which Muslims around the world turn to pray. Standing in the vast courtyard of the mosque, surrounded by fellow believers from diverse backgrounds, I felt a profound sense of unity and solidarity in our shared faith of Islam.
The Prophet's Mosque in Medina, where the Prophet Muhammad is buried, holds a special place in the hearts of Muslims. Within its walls lies Rawdha, an area believed to be a garden of paradise. Stepping into Rawdha, I was overwhelmed by a sense of tranquility. It was here that I felt closest to the Prophet and his teachings, reflecting on his life and legacy with a deep sense of humility and gratitude. I do remember when I begged Mrs.Bukhari to go there again. And to get into the Rawdha we ran across the crowd half asleep. Undertaking Umrah and visiting the Mosque and the Prophet's House in Rawdha was a profoundly humbling and transformative experience. It deepened my connection to my faith, strengthened my sense of community with fellow believers, and instilled within me a renewed commitment to living a life guided by the principles of Islam. As I returned home, I carried with me the memories of this sacred journey, knowing that it had left an indelible mark on my soul and inspired me to strive for spiritual growth and enlightenment in all aspects of my life and others as well.
I wanted to take a moment to express my heartfelt gratitude to each of you for organizing the incredible Umrah trip that profoundly impacted my life. I would like to thank Mr. Kannin, Mrs.Bukhari and Mr. Maghraby. Your planning, dedication, and attention to detail ensured that every aspect of the journey was seamlessly executed, allowing us to focus fully on the spiritual experience without any concerns. From coordinating travel arrangements to arranging accommodations and facilitating our visits to the holy sites, in making this pilgrimage a truly memorable and enriching experience. Moreover, your warmth, hospitality, and genuine care for the well-being for all of us created a supportive and nurturing environment throughout the journey. Your kindness and generosity will forever be remembered in our hearts, and I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to have shared this sacred experience under your guidance and leadership, and I am sure everyone on the trip were too. Please accept my sincere thanks for your tireless efforts in organizing this amazing trip. Your commitment has left a lasting impression on me. May Allah bless you abundantly for your selfless service and dedication to spreading the teachings of Islam.
In February 2024, a group of 28 adventurous NLCS students embarked on a transformative journey to the local island of Ukulhas in the Maldives. Under the guidance of our dedicated staff, led by Mr. Jacobs and supported by Mr. Clench, Miss Ward, and Miss Ren, this trip was not just a vacation but a profound experience in environmental conservation and marine preservation.
One of the highlights of our trip was the opportunity to explore the breathtaking underwater world through SCUBA diving. However, our dives went beyond mere exploration; we actively engaged in assessing coral health and contributing to the restoration of fragile ecosystems. With a mission to protect and nurture the coral reefs, we embarked on a meaningful endeavor of collecting broken coral pieces and constructing a coral garden, laying the foundation for the regeneration of vital habitats.
Moreover, our commitment to environmental sustainability extended to above-water activities as well. Through coral reef clean-up dives, we diligently removed plastics and other human waste, ensuring the preservation of marine life and the integrity of the ocean ecosystem. Additionally, we joined hands with Ukulhas Primary School for a beach clean-up initiative, where we collectively gathered an impressive 40kg of waste, leaving a tangible impact on the local community and environment.
Beyond the tangible outcomes of our efforts, the NLCS Maldives Trip 2024 was a testament to the power of collective action and the importance of environmental stewardship. As we return home with memories of pristine blue waters and vibrant coral reefs, we carry with us a renewed sense of responsibility to protect and conserve our planet's precious natural resources.
Thank you to everyone who made this unforgettable journey possible, and may our experiences inspire continued dedication to environmental sustainability for generations to come.

This year, NLCS Dubai had the privilege of hosting Dr. Amra Sabic El Rayess, an Associate Professor of Practice at Columbia University, who left an indelible mark on our school community.
During her visit, Dr. Sabic El Rayess not only shared her story but also treated us to a reading of an excerpt from her book, 'The Cat I Never Named'. Through this literary journey, she transported us into the heart of her experiences during the Bosnian genocide, allowing us to glimpse the world through her eyes and feel the emotions that accompanied her at the time. Moreover, she also talked about the process of writing her books which offered insights into the challenges and triumphs she encountered.
Dr Sabic El Rayess also brought the present into focus by discussing her ongoing work at Columbia University. She illuminated the importance of her research on educational displacement and targeted violence. By bridging the gap between theory and practice, she has provided valuable insights into how academia can be leveraged as a tool for social change. Her discussions about her work resonated deeply with our students, offering them a glimpse into the real-world impact of academic research.
Through engaging anecdotes and thought-provoking analysis, she demonstrated how her scholarly pursuits intersect with her passion for advocacy and activism. This interdisciplinary approach not only enriched our understanding of her work but also inspired us to consider the myriad ways in which education can be a catalyst for positive change.
Dr. Sabic El Rayess's willingness to share her experiences empowered our students to see themselves as agents of change within their own communities. Her insights served as a reminder that the pursuit of knowledge is not just an intellectual exercise but also a means of effecting meaningful societal transformation.
