IMPACT REPORT 2020-2022

from the INTERIM HEADMISTRESS

Aswe reflect on the past two years, I am delighted to share with you the significant iimpact and achievements of North London Collegiate School (NLCS) in our Impact Report 2020-2022.

First and foremost, I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to the entire school community for your unwavering support. Your generosity and commitment are as important today as it has been since the School’s foundation and without them, we would not be able to deliver a dynamic and inspirational educational environment.

Thanks to the generosity of our community, we have been able to offer life-changing bursaries, empowering talented young women to thrive and reach their full potential. Your contributions have made a significant difference in shaping the lives of these remarkable individuals, which otherwise might not have been possible. We continue to remodel the approach to the site; our reception space and other buildings, but at the heart of this is something special, The IDEAS Hub. I look forward to seeing our most ambitious construction project come to life soon.

These transformative projects wouldn’t be possible without your dedication to supporting NLCS. We are grateful for your continued involvement and the invaluable contributions you make to the NLCS community. As we embark on the next chapter of our school journey, I am confident that we will continue to build brighter futures for our students and impact tomorrow’s world.

“I look forward to seeing our most ambitious construction project come to life soon”

from the CHAIR OF GOVERNORS

Dear NLCS community

2020-2022 has been marked by unprecedented challenges, as the global pandemic disrupted lives and educational systems worldwide. Despite these obstacles, the NLCS community, including parents, friends, and our dedicated Old North Londoners (ONLs), rose to the occasion, demonstrating continued support for the School’s mission and values.

None of these achievements would have been possible without our entire NLCS community’s contributions. Whether through donations, volunteering, or advocacy, your generosity has made a tangible difference in our student’s lives and the School’s overall development. We are immensely grateful for your continued commitment and partnership.

LEGACY –NLCS’S FUTURE

Building a STRONG Foundation from

the DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT

The academic years 2020-21 and 2021-22 brought significant changes to the Development Office, providing an opportunity to review and rebuild our operations. Although in-person events were limited due to the unpredictable nature of the year, we successfully brought the NLCS community together through a series of engaging online events.

In October 2020, we held a lively Zoom reunion for the Class of 1970 and other ONLs who left NLCS over 50 years ago, joined by over 100 ONLs from around the world, sharing memories and updates. As Christmas approached, our online Carol Service brought the community together, and Founder’s Day was celebrated online in the Spring Term, with plans to continue streaming future services for broader participation.

During the pandemic, the mentoring and career services programme continued to play an important role in the lives of our Sixth Form students and young alumnae. I would like to thank everyone that takes the time to support, mentor, and guide others in the next phase of their journey after NLCS.

In the 2021-22 academic year, Emily Abrahams and Claudia Marks joined our team to reignite the Alumnae Relations programme, making a significant impact during their 12-month tenure. We also welcomed Tara Stephens, an experienced professional with a background in development, as our Development Office Administrator.

To strengthen our community and enhance our fundraising strategies, we partnered with consultants from Graham-Pelton.

They conducted surveys and facilitated smaller discussion groups to gather valuable insights. The feedback received from these interactions will directly shape our development program for the future.

In September 2021, we were thrilled to welcome ONLs and friends back for in-person events, fostering a sense of connection and celebration, including our first Staff Reunion and a special reunion for the Classes of 2019 and 2020, who missed school events due to the pandemic. Other events included the 1-Year Reunion, 5-Year Reunion, 10-, 20-, 30- & 40-Year Reunion, 50-Year Reunion, the Big Six Dinner, and the ONLA Summer Picnic.

In April 2022, we published the first ONLine magazine in three years, featuring inspiring stories from ONLs making a positive impact. ONL Connect, our alumnae networking site, continued to grow with new signups, fostering connections among ONLs. Additionally, 73% of users offered their expertise and assistance in supporting our career and mentoring services.

We finished the year with the launch of The 1850 Club, a way for us to recognise and thank our supporters who make a recurring gift to NLCS. Designed to be accessible to all and make donating a positive experience, The 1850 Club enables the School to make long-term commitments to its most pressing funding priorities, whilst providing a sociable platform to thank regular supporters.

During the 2022-23 academic year, we will be reinstating the Neighbourhood Drinks events after a two-year hiatus. Once a term, parents in a particular area or postcode are invited to an evening reception at the home of local parents. Parents from all school years can socialise and chat with senior staff. If you are interested in hosting an event in the future, please do contact me.

A heartfelt thank you to our parents and ONLs who generously support our community, host events, and contribute to the work of the Development Office. As the School has no historic endowment, we rely on the generosity of supporters. Without your help and support, we would not be able to offer bursaries to talented girls or maintain and enhance the School’s facilities and grounds. We are grateful for your generosity and commitment to our mission.

Thank you!

The Bernice McCabe Bursary Fund

Transforming Lives

The provision of bursary places is a central part of NLCS’s ethos, offering talented girls financial support and the opportunity to benefit from a transformative education. Since its foundation, the fund promotes equality, diversity, and inclusivity, enabling deserving students to thrive and become future leaders. Contributions to the Bursary Fund are vital in helping the School to continue creating a diverse community of girls.

BROADENING HORIZONS FOR OUR NEXT GENERATION OF LEADERS

“My family came to the UK in 1991 and my parents worked in supermarkets. Going to a school like North London was completely unaffordable and was not part of their vision. Having a fully funded bursary meant that my parents gave me the education they could only dream of. I hope you will consider making a gift today – of any size – so that more young people can have the same opportunities that I had”

For Ways of Giving to NLCS

Named after the School’s founding year, The 1850 Club is a way for us to recognise and thank our supporters who make a recurring gift. Every contribution, regardless of the amount is designed to make donating a positive experience. Your recurring gift will enable the School to make long-term commitments to its most pressing funding priorities.

Leaving a gift in your Will

Throughout North London’s history, legacies and bequests have played a crucial role in our success, and this tradition continues today. By considering a gift in your Will to North London, you can contribute to our ongoing mission and create a transformative educational experience for future generations. Whether your legacy gift is large or small, it has the power to make a lasting difference. You can choose to support bursaries for talented students, enhance our facilities, or provide valuable resources. Your contribution will ensure that the cherished memories from your school days, continue to shape the lives of those who follow.

Frances Mary Buss Fellowship

Join us in preserving our legacy and securing a bright future for North London Collegiate School. If you inform us of your intention to include NLCS in your Will, you will join our Frances Mary Buss Fellowship (FMB Fellowship) and receive invitations to special donor events including a legacy lunch. Your name will be recorded in the FMB Fellowship honours roll.

Your support will be deeply appreciated and remembered for generations to come.

“I am an ONL from the Class of 1971, and I cherish the memories and education I received at North London. My sister Alison, who was School Captain in 1972, also had a transformative experience here. To honour her memory and express gratitude, I will leave a gift in my will to establish a bursary in her name. It is my way of ensuring that future students can have the same exceptional opportunities we did.”
