BIOSCOPE{WALI}_FINDING HER WAY HOME PRACTICE-LED-RESEARCH

> Situated practice is practice led research focused on spatial theories in art, architec- ture, performance, urbanism and writing. methodology allowed me to develop a robust understanding of research methods in interdisciplinary art and design practices. Situated Practice course embraces a hands-on approach, emphasizing the importance of experiential learning and site-specific research and practices. A deep understanding of the relationship between art, space, and society, and encourages critical thinking and reflection on the role of the artist in contemporary urban environments including spatial politics, urban interventions, participatory art, critical cartography, and cultural geography.

ANTHROPOLOGY . STORYTELLING . AUDIENCE ENGAGEMENT

The project is anchored on an intimate public performance on becoming the world’s first and only Bioscopewali (a nomadic Indian street performer). Through auto-anthropology, documented London locations, unveiling the transformative power of everyday life. Travelling between seven sites across central London, audiences are encouraged to kneel and look through a lens of a handcrafted Bioscope to view a scroll comprised of drawings depicting the socio-spatial portraits of everyday life in these spaces while situated poems are recounted. Re-images, Resituates and Regenders this art form from the perspective and position of a young female migrant to London as a means to understand and celebrate the spaces that allow us to feel at home in a foreign land. The drawings and writings capture the fragility and impermanence of these overlooked spaces, inviting viewers to question their own relationships with their surroundings.

Postgrad Work _ https://bioscopewali.cargo.site

The project asks what are the tangible and intangible aspects of urban space that influences one’s identity and sense of belonging. Additionally, how can performative practice help celebrate and make these visible?

“Bioscope” _ is a rare intimate storytelling experience, which brings visual art, local stories, poetry, and theater together. It is a portable colorful wooden box that has visual narratives painted on a scroll within. These boxes assist called Bioscopewalas wandering storytellers as they go from home to home.

“Bioscopewala{li}”_ The nomadic Indian street storytellers rotates their hands and displayed them to their audience while they narrated stories that revolved around the paintings. These are sequential narratives that serve as aids around which oral narratives are structured.

“This archive” _ shows the importance of the grand collective memories of the city and the extraordinary and individual memory of its inhabitants. One could not exist without the other. What should one do with the micro-historical and to most people, partly insignificant and rather ordinary spaces? How should this be preserved at all? Could it be understood as a self induced infra ordinary museum that you can put on your shoulder?

> ‘The Memory Machine’ the film documents a series of spaces from a private courtyard to a local deli and how these are transformed through Bioscopewali’s publicperformance.

We spend a third of our lives in bed looking out the window. Windows are the barriers, the connectors. On one side, me and my own space, the private, the domestic, filled with my own prized possessions:my bed, my table, my plants, books, notes on the post it, a jar of chocolate and many other things; on the other the entire city, in between the threshold; the Window sill.

sat at night in utmost pain on the bench.Opposite to me on another; two girls sat down. They seemed to want to discuss something in confidence and began to whisper. Nobody except me is nearby. And should not have understood their language either, however much louder it had been. But now could not resist the feeling, in the face of this unmotivated gossip in a language inaccessible to me. At the time Me and The Fox crossing the road from the park both felt Out of Space.

https://bioscopewali.cargo.site/The-Memory-Machine

There is no space left to putdown one more stuff in his cart, things are piled; boxed, stacked jammed. A homeless guy was selling some really intresting memorablia of his to make some more space for essantials. Ironically found an iconic phonebooth saving pot; it was kind of broken. fixed it. I’m glad could make some space for his new things; only to some space on my window sill.

> In this thesis, the definition of the term ‘temporary’ in architectural discourse are to be re-visited. In broader terms, this study is concerned with how ‘temporality’ has been redefined in architecture, what its influences are on the contemporary architectural practice, and what roles it plays in the development of conventional architectural discourse. In this respect, the objective of the thesis is to understand the pragmatic and conceptual considerations by means of ‘EXHIBITION’ design.

BIENNALE . TEMPORALITY . INSTALLATION

This thesis delves into the multifaceted interpretations of the term ‘temporality’ within the realm of architectural discourse. In architecture, temporality primarily encompasses the lifespan of structures, particularly in the case of temporary constructions such as exhibitions. Throughout history, temporary structures have enjoyed a close association with festivals and other public, urban recreational, and cultural activities. These vibrant celebrations often mirror the interests of individuals or communities while simultaneously embodying broader social and cultural values. They serve as wellsprings of inspiration, generating fresh and innovative perspectives for cities and specific regions.

Furthermore, this thesis undertakes an exploration of the intricate relationship between art, culture, and architecture. The debate surrounding whether architecture qualifies as an art form has persistently sparked contentious discussions within architectural circles.

The project’s focal point revolves around the development of a conceptual design for an exhibition platform tailor-made for temporary exhibitions as an integral part of the Biennale. This undertaking involves meticulous site selection in Kochi, ensuring compatibility with the criteria set by other venues, as well as the creation of a versatile layout capable of accommodating diverse exhibition types. Additionally, the project endeavors to conceptualize an engaging outdoor exhibit interlinked with the temporary exhibition. Leveraging the proximity of the site to the backwaters, this exhibit aims to captivate a broad audience and ignite a newfound interest in the urban public space.

>The idea of user-comfort and their underlying experience in a context of home; stand the test of time and age gracefully. The vertical volume of the building stands out in the context, with a conscious design decision to build in local and visually familiar materials. A small inner-court between the room and the façade acts as a private family room. Light plays an important role in the design of the project, as it consistently draws attention to the forms. Different spaces enhance and mellow the light accordingly, throughout the day. Greens softens the built volume and will continue to grow; client loves nature and plan. The curated choice to integrate landscape into the design dictates the micro-climate in the space, moderating the temperature in the courtyards as well.

REPRESENTATION GRAPHICS |

> Graphic designing and illustrations are as much as about the content as it is about aesthetics and visuals. Conveying the reason to make an illustration and for the illustration to be able to hold the viewers attention requires certain thoughts behind its elements. The chosen drawing, Typography, colour, composition, medium used etc can alter the comprehensive hold that it might have on the viewer. Since the medium of interaction is visual it becomes important to represent ones work in the simplest of manner.
