President’s Report What a great week in Greensboro. Congratulations to all the winners. The quality of rabbits was phenominal. Thank you to Kudzo Kountry for putting on a great nationals. Fun was had by all at each of the events.

I

am very excited at the progress our club has made over the past several months. The board and committees have all been very busy. I think many of you have seen some of the many improvements made including our newly revised website with members only area, newsletter and Facebook group. What you see in these services is only the tip of the iceberg as we are working on many things behind the scenes as well. One of the areas currently being addressed is our Constitution and Bylaws. The C&B are the guidelines chosen by the club members for how they would like the board to operate the club. It details items such as when and how elections should take place and who is eligible to run. As the board has reviewed this document, it has become evident that we need to change certain practices. For example, the Constitution requires an annual audit that is performed by a CPA. The audit is a critically important part of ensuring that your membership dollars are properly cared for. However, the cost is extremely high for a CPA. We are currently seeking bids for an audit and will have it performed for the first time in many years. In the mean time we are hoping to establish an audit committee to perform this function. The board will be making a recommendation for a change to the C&B that will be brought to the membership this fall, along with several other changes.

T h e

F l u f f

We have been focused on better avenues of communication for our members. We are already preparing for the 2016—2020. Facebook has been used to get input from our members on a variety of topics, and that will continue through the process. Your input and feedback is important to the club. Facebook is not the only means of communication. Please feel free to contact your district director or any of the other officers regarding comments or concerns. One of the areas I feel we need the most improvement in is our youth department. I am excited that Haley Birkholz and Cathie Usakowski will be taking on this task. I encourage each of you to allow your youth members to participate in the events and activities these ladies will be organizing for the youth. It is their goal to have a unified youth department that promotes the breed. They are working on some workshops just for our youth, and I think our youth will find them very helpful. Finally, I’d like to conclude with a thought inspired by my youngest daughter, Taylor. Every time we attend a show, she mentions that she can’t wait to see her rabbit family. Author, Emma Bombeck said this about family We were a strange little band of characters trudging through life sharing diseases and toothpaste, coveting one another’s desserts, hiding

Vice President’s Report Greetings Everyone! Here we are at my favorite time of the year……..flowers and baby bunnies. I have been reading about everyone’s success and heartbreaks at the shows, and on their future hopefuls.

ot your eye on that special one? As I write this, there is less than 6 months to the ARBA convention in Wichita, Kansas. Get those does bred for nice juniors to show!

Things will getting busy with the election on the horizon. The board will have plenty of items to discuss, and as always, we welcome your input. Make sure to contact your District Directors with any questions, input, offers of help, donations or just a chat about bunnies.

Website Committee First things first! THANK YOU to all for sharing your great comments about the new website. This new website belongs to all of the club’s members. If there is something you would like to see added, please let me know!

E

arlier this year members suggested replacing the variety pictures that are currently on the web site now. Terri Erb and I are working together on this new project. We asked members to please email me any variety photos that they have taken. To date I have received some very nice ones, but we still need MORE! I have posted what I have on our club’s Facebook page in albums by variety and members will be able vote on their favorites. So far I have 3 black otters, 2 blue otters, 1 blue tort, 4 blacks, 2 blues, 6 chestnuts, 1 opal, 1 squirrel, 1 chinchilla, 3 brokens and 4 REWs. We are still in need of pictures for the following varieties: BEW, chocolate, lilac, sable point, seal, siamese sable, black tort, silver marten, and smoke pearl marten. Secretary’s Report After a rocky start to the year I think the club has a system down pretty well in communicating with our membership. With any growth comes a little pain and the NJWRC is no different.

W

e went to a new sweeps and sanction person as well as a new newsletter editor. We will now be getting the guidebooks published somewhere new too. Add to that new board members and the new online “member only” area of the website and you quickly realize how much we are up to! We ask you be patient with us as we iron out all the wrinkles. Sometimes we don’t know something isn’t working correctly until our members bring it to our attention. I have made no secret in stating I will no be seeking re-election for the Secretary position. I just don’t have the time this club deserves to devote

to it. We have sold our entire herd of rabbits and are pursuing other interests at this time. Although the Jersey Wooly is near and dear to my heart, there just are enough hours in the day to play bunnies too and I’m sure many of you understand when I say it’s tough to be good in two passions. One is going to suffer for the other. With that said, what are you waiting for? Get involved! We need you to make this club a success! To my knowledge, there has been no nominating petitions have been submitted for the secretary position as of mid May. This is your opportunity to see the inner workings of the NJWRC and to have a voice.

Bug Control As summer heats up, the bug population can explode. Try one of these methods to control pests: A tiny bit of food-grade diotomaceous earth mixed in the food. Vinegar or vanilla in the drinking water. Gnat-sized parasitic wasps that feed upon the fly larvae (can be ordered online). Oscillating fans to keep the air moving, making it hard for flys to land. Fly strips hung next to a light at night will collect many flying pests. -Tid Bits

Editors’s Report Hello everyone, March was a very exciting time as I got to attend my first Jersey Wooly National show. I brought a grand total of one rabbit, which turned out for the best as I was kept quite busy throughout the weekend.

I

had the honor of meeting Kitty Lynch from the Kuduz Kounty Wooly Club; the hosts of the National show. I don’t think she stopped the entire weekend. I know the smile never left her face either. Having put on a national show in the past I know how much work and planning goes into that one little weekend. There is much more going on behind the scenes than most of us are aware. It’s a monumental task and I think an experience that all of us should experience at least once in our lifetimes. If anything it serves to give us a new appreciation of the work the organizers must do. I know it made me a more patient person; more forgiving of the minor mistakes that happen during the course of a show. mistakes do happen and in the bigger picture they don’t matter. Being grateful of the efforts matter more, so don’t forget to say thank you. It goes a long way.

Due to space restrictions we are featuring our candidate profiles online. With the upcoming elections, we invite you to log into the member’s portal and get to know your candidates before your ballot arrives in the mail.

Congratulations to the winners: Deidre Edder, Angel LeSage, Nicole and Logan Boulier and Haley Birkholz. You will get to read about the open champions, Deidre and Angel, in this issue. We will feature the youth winners in the Autumn issue of the Fluff.

Now it was tempting to become hostile at the continuous beating we took, but instead it had a curious side effect. We all became better. This breeder actually made us all more competitive. You see there was no room to keep mediocre animals, we had to cull harder and breed smarter in order to keep up. That made everyone in our area stronger. When this person did get out, our area was so dominant that we are still reaping the benefits. continued on page 30)

This issue contains the complete national show results, the group winners, and the open champions, along with our regularly featured content.

T h e

F l u f f

One thing I’ve always felt strongly about is that competition makes us all better breeders. Anyone can go to a show and beat themselves, or a few animals bred by people who aren’t invested in their breed and so will put anything on the table. But that’s not the point is it? Back when I bred Dwarfs competitively there was always a breeder who consistently placed at the top at conventions and national shows. Unfortunately for us this person was a regular attendee at our local shows where we would get soundly beaten time and again.

Sandra Wight Wightout@socal.rr.com

Never begrudge your competition, instead embrace the fact that they will make you a humble winner, a gracious loser and ultimately, a better breeder.

hows, and Fairs will be in full swing, and the temperatures are already beginning to rise. It can be tough to keep wooled rabbits cool in the summer. Now is a great time to get out your fans and give them a good cleaning and inspection. I have heard stories from other breeders of barn fires that have started due to wool covered fans, and or a faulty cord.

in size, and keeping them on hand in the freezer worked great! Be sure to keep an eye on your rabbits when in transit to shows. Making sure they stay cool and hydrated on the trip can be a big challenge. Try to provide as much shade and ventilation as you can while in the car, and remember temperatures in vehicles are always warmer than we might think during the summer heat.

A great tip I learned last year was to freeze ceramic tiles to put in with the rabbits to help them cool off. We purchased tiles that are about 6x6

District 2 Report Twelve to sixteen months ago, I was seeing a significant dwindling in the number of open Woolys being shown and there was only 1 youth showing in central California area.

I

am thrilled to report that now there are 6 new & returning open exhibitors and 5 youth exhibitors. In the last couple of youth shows there was 20 plus Woolys on the table. Way to go!! Haylie Davis & Julia Baetz have been moving back and forth with their BOB bunnies. Arielle Spotswood & Trinity Burger have recently started showing. Taelor Burt was our lone youth exhibitor for a while (she has done well with her Mini Lops) and I suspect with more youth exhibitors she will do as well with her Wooly’s. Timmy Bauer and Danielle Alicea (Bauer) joined forces this year and have had a great season. They have received many BOBs and a RIS. Along with their success in the rabbit world they are expecting their first child in August, a girl. Congratulations! All this action on the show table has made it fun for me and I am looking forward to the startup of next fall show season. What a great group of people to show with. We are excited to welcome many new Jersey Wooly breeders in the south as well. Coleman Carsen and Michael Welch from Arizona have each acquired stock from some fantastic breeders and are busy breeding their own generations of winners. In Southern California, Shelby George has won many Best of Breeds with her lovely Otter buck and some very competitive Broken juniors. Finally, we are excited to welcome Denise Squires back into our Jersey Wooly family. Denise is back to showing and breeding after a brief hiatus. We are thrilled to have her back.

Moving on to talk about the summer weather and dealing with the heat. In my area of the west, the foothills of central California, the weather is very hot and dry. I use a series of measures to control the temperature in my rabbitry. About 7 years ago, I insulated the walls and ceiling of the rabbitry, a metal building, with rigid insulation. This helped to keep it considerably cooler. Swamp coolers work well in this climate, so I use a large household unit set up with an on/off timer. A few years ago, on the sunny side of the rabbitry, I draped garden shade cloth from the nursery on the outside of the building. Later, I figured out that an air space between the building and the shade cloth works best. This helped drop the temperature another 5 degrees. When it is 100 plus degrees every bit of heat relief is helpful. With all my measures, the rabbitry generally stays under 80 degrees on those really hot days. Enjoy your summer.

Draping a garden shade cloth outside your rabbitry wll help keep temeratures down during the hot summer months.

e have big commercial fans in our rabbitry and use frozen bottles to help keep the Woolies cool in the heat plus making sure all have fresh cold water too. I have not been to many shows this season due to my health problems, and I apologize for that. I was able to attend a show in Haskell, Oklahoma in April that was very nice and had good turn out of Woolies for our area. As for the youth in our area we do

have some young ladies doing well on the tables, Annie Davis, Shelby and Kaylie Sequira are doing good on the tables here. My kids (Gary, April and Roselea Stout) are holding their own. We need to be out there encouraging youth to do their best that they can. So I hope everyone has full nest boxes and lots of juniors for convention this year since it’s in our backyard this year. opefully everyone else is having the same luck. I would like to put out a big thanks to Kitty Linch and Deidre Edder for throwing a wonderful nationals in Greensboro North Carolina. The judges were great and the people were awesome. It was truly a great show. Congrats to all the winners, especially Deidre on her great BOB win. I was ask to discuss what I do to keep the bunnies cool in the hot weather. I am pretty basic just like I am with my feed. I have all the win-

dows open and the garage door up all the way. I have four fans that run non stop. I don’t freeze water bottles or tiles or do anything else but the fans. I do not mess with the rabbits at all during the hottest part of the day unless I am just checking to make sure everyone has water. Plenty of water is the key. I hope this newsletter finds everyone doing well. I can’t wait to see everyone at shows in the fall. I am pretty much done with the show season for the year.

District 9 Report We have had an early spring this year with warmer than normal temperatures reminding us that it is time to get ready for Summerizing your barn. A few are lucky enough to insulated and airconditioned rabbitries; some have garages or sheds where they house their rabbits.

J

ersey wooly rabbits due to their small body mass handle hot temperatures surprisingly well. I don’t believe I have ever lost a wooly to heatstroke in my barn. Some people like to use fans and misters. If you use fans, clean them frequently as wool, fur, and dust block the motor and cause an extreme fire hazard. A fan should blow across the tops or fronts of cages; not directly on the rabbits themselves. Misters should not spray over the feeders; feed can mould within hours of being dampened. If you use air conditioners, fans and

misters, be aware that a power outage can be very dangerous. I have had several friends over the years that have lost herds or at least multiple animals when their power went off while they were away at work or at a show. If you use a watering system check your valves every other day; a rabbit cannot survive more than two or three days without water in warm weather. I personally choose to use crocks; the water stays cool and drinkable on even the very hottest of days. I also do not use fans and misters as I am away all day every day and there is no one to check on the rabbits.

I am very proud of my little homebred doe, Phunny Pharm’s Secret Kiss. Kindled December 2010; she won best white wool at convention and was top five self sr doe. This year she has won more than 24 grand champion legs; including 10 Best of Breed and 5 Best Opposite Sex wins; A Best in Show and a reserve Best in Show.

sold her dam to a youth that was showing Angoras. A breeder in his area called me to let me know he was neglecting his animals. At my request she went and got Phunny Pharm’s Kiss Me Silly back for me. She was emaciated and a solid mat; and this doe has a non matting coat. One eye was injured and she is blind in that eye. I bred her to Erb’s Shamish the day before Convention 2010 and she raised a stunning litter of 3.

Phunny Pharm’s Secret Kiss; Phunny Pharm’s Kiss Me Again; that broke her back at 9 weeks; recovered fully but dislocated a hind leg. She managed to win 2 legs in spite of it, but has retired to the nest box; She is about to wean her first litter of three beautiful babies plus two netherland dwarf fosters. The third kit in the litter was a stunning smoke pearl jr buck; very tiny and typey Phunny Pharm’s Silly Millimeter; that went to live with Wade Burkhalter. Secret Kiss is a very sweet and gentle rabbit that is a natural poser; she has a high head mount with full short body and wonderful wool. She does not pose on tiptoe like a brittania petite, but in the correct pose described in our standard. I bred her the day after nationals, she had four stillborn babies. She is bred again and due in 10 days; fingers crossed; it took her mom and sister two tries before they successfully reared a litter and they are both fabulous moms now. She is bred to Phunny Pharm’s Prince Charming; top ten wooly for two years; a BIS and RBI:S winner in his own right, and winner of 38 grand champion legs. Kiss is descended from many of my best rabbits with some nice bloodlines crossed in. I have been breeding and showing Jersey Woolies for 19 years and this is my biggest thrill; Even more exciting than my Convention BOB win in 2002.

Standard’s Committee Report Right now, there is not a lot of new news regarding the NJWRC Standards Committee. We continue to discuss one point at a time, not rushing through anything.

S

ome good points have been brought up and I, believe that we have had some good discussions thus far. We have 2 years in which we need to have everything completed on the proposed standard changes. The proposed changes that has been approved by the general

membership of the NJWRC, will have to be submitted to the ARBA Standards Committee by June 30, 2014. We continue to work in order to better our breed.

Greensboro, North Carolina: Angel LeSage’s Gorgeous Smoke Pearl Buck wins BOS

Good Things Come To

Those Who Wait words: Angel LeSage photos: Sandra Wight

It has been really thrilling and I am very excited winning BOSB at Nationals. ‘Slow Bloomer’ has been one of my greatest rabbits ever. He has been doing incredibly well on the show table this last season, winning numerous BOBs, 1 BIS & 1 RIS.

U

sually I am pretty relaxed during the shows but at Nationals I found myself getting really tense as the judging was coming to an end. I felt ‘Slow Bloomer’ had a really good shot at winning and it was driving me crazy waiting for the results.

in Reno in 2011. He was only 4 month old and did not place well. Even at other local shows he didn’t do well. However, I really liked him so I just kept watching him. Then around June he started getting his masculine qualities and by the end of summer he had his bold head and girth. I took him to convention but on the way he lost his wool cap. Even without it he placed high in his class. I named him ‘Slow Bloomer’ because it took him awhile to grow up and oh boy did he grow up!

In the past, Nationals has not been the best time of year for me. I do think having the show earlier in the year made a difference for ‘Slow Bloomer’. He was in his prime with a great coat. I have to tell you, that I had him at Nationals

Massive Mug Heads

A massive squared head, topped with a fuzzy wool cap is the crowning glory and one of the defining characteristics of our little Wooly gems. The Standard calls for the head to be set high and close to the shoulders. The head should not only display width between the eyes, it should be short too. When viewed from the side it should have the appearance of a squared, somewhat flattened forehead and face; resembling the shape of a coffee mug - hence the term “Mug Head.”

1 What is a mug head?

The classic “mug head” can best be visualized from the side. The head rounds from the ears and brow to a plane between the eyes and nose. Then it rounds at the muzzle and jowl. A short, dense wool cap and side trimmings also help achieve the squared-off effect. The term “short” describes the distance from the corner of the eye to the nose (see dotted line in picture1). When that distance is too long, the muzzle has a “snipey” appearance.

Wider is Better

Width can best be viewed from the front of your Wooly. The ideal head is wide all the way down; from the top of the skull to the muzzle. The two bucks displayed in picture 2 are the same age; however, the Wooly on the left displays a massively wide head. The buck on the right is narrow at the brow and tapers down through the muzzle.

2

Picture 3 displays a narrow head (and extraordinarily long ears), from the top of the head down through the muzzle. Remember to allow your Woolies time to mature before evaluating their heads. Most go through a period of the “uglies” where growth is out of balance before they blossom into those massive headed wonders that we all love.

Officer & Director Reports Continued shampoo, borrowing money, locking each other out of our rooms, inflicting pain and kissing to heal it in the same instant, loving, laughing, defending, and trying to figure out the common thread that bound us all together.” Its not hard to figure out what bonds us all together. Its those cute, furry little animals called the Jersey Wooly. I trust that you will look at us all as a family, treat one another with the respect that you would provide to a brother or sister, and work together for the betterment of our rabbit family as a whole. Each time we attend a rabbit show it should be like a family reunion. I hope your nestboxes are full, and hope to see you at a show soon! (District 1 report continued from page 8)

their first specialty show in April in conjunction with an Inland Empire show in Spokane. This is great news for our district because more chances to show woolies will hopefully bring in more exhibitors. Keep an eye out for their future shows, and keep recruiting new exhibitors to help improve our overall show numbers within the district. It’s not too late to start looking at your juniors for convention prospects. It’s also a great time to start thinking about any supplies you may need to order for convention (like risers.) Speaking of convention, I will again be in charge of award sponsorships for the club. Sponsoring an award is a great way to help the club fund the expense of convention awards, and be able to advertise your rabbitry at the same time. There are 36 spots available to sponsor, and prices are $25 or $50 a spot depending on the award sponsored. If you would like to sponsor an award please contact me for more information at irwshonna@hotmail.com. I wish you all the best of luck in the upcoming shows and competitions, and hope everyone has a great summer. (District 9 report continued from page 13)

My barns are metal carports with shade cloth hanging from the sides. Cages are hanging or on fence post legs; allowing plenty of air circulation up down and through the cages. T h e

F l u f f

I use underwire nest boxes and during the hot weather I put the hay directly in the wire drop box without the liners; to allow some air flow to the babies to keep them from overheating. Also it is important to take most of the wool/fur out of the box every morning first thing. I have had babies literally steam to death in a pile of wool on a hot day.

Reserve In Show SB/JG’s Out With A Bang

Some people like to use frozen bottles in the cages;that too will help to keep rabbits cool. The most important thing is to not go into your barn during the day; I stay away between 7 am and 10 pm on hot days; my rabbits stretch out full length on the wire and sleep all day; not moving at all. That is how they handle the heat. I go out late in the evening; between 10 pm and midnight to feed and water;the rabbits are up bouncing around and playing. If I were to go out in the middle of the day the rabbits would jump up and run around; seriously overheating; possibly fatally so. Bucks can go sterile when the heat remains above 90 degrees for more than a few days; and will remain sterile until the weather cools off in the fall. Here in the deep south my bucks are mostly sterile from June through October. I use young bucks between four and seven months old as they are usually still fertile. (Editor’s report continued from page 7)

Never begrudge your competition, instead embrace the fact that they will make you a humble winner, a gracious loser and ultimately, a better breeder. In the end, competiveness isn’t a bad thing, how we handle it that matters. Winning is great, don’t get me wrong, but it’s easy to be a winner. Anyone can win gracefully. Losing gracefully is much, much more difficult. (Webmaster’s report continued from page 4)

disqualifications/faults and COD varieties, such as chocolate and lilac otter, red, orange and fawn can also be included. The pictures that receive the majority of votes will be featured on the variety page of the website.

Constitution & Bylaws Committee Report Greetings from your Constitution and By-laws Committee members: Lisa Smith, Denise Geick and Bill Patrick. At the beginning of the year we were asked to provide wording for the following amendments. These amendments will need to be mailed to our members for a vote before they are adopted. #1. Article 9, SECTION 7: New officers shall assume office on the next January 1st following their election and shall serve for the period for which they were elected, or until their successors are elected and qualified. Proposed Change: Article 9, SECTION 7: New officers shall assume office immediately following the general meeting of the NJWRC held during the ARBA Convention. Officers shall serve for the period for which they were elected, or until their successors are elected and qualified. This new wording is actually the old wording that used to exist in our Constitution and By-laws. It had been changed to its current version to allow for incoming board members to have an opportunity to observe how the board works, and provided two extra months time spent with the board. #2. Article II, SECTION 4: The Treasurer shall be custodian of all GENERAL funds, shall maintain a bank account in the name of NJWRC and shall maintain a set of books and records suitable to the Board of Directors. Shall receive all monies due to the club, shall be bonded in favor of the club in an amount set by the board of directors, said amount not to be less than $10,000.00 and in a company approved by the board of directors... These will be MAILED in the Fall, Winter, Spring, and Summer. Revision: ARTICLE VIII – NEWSLETTERS, SECTION 1: …Four (4) newsletters per year will be PUBLISHED, to keep members informed of the progress and current happenings involving the Jersey Wooly. These will be PUBLISHED in the Fall, Winter, Spring, and Summer. MEMBERS MAY CHOOSE BETWEEN A DIGITAL COPY SENT VIA EMAIL OR A HARD COPY SENT VIA US POSTAL SERVICE, OR BOTH. INTERPRETATIONS The committee was asked by the board to interpret the word “mail” as used in our constitution and by-laws. The committee determined that it could mean “any type of transmittal of information.” The committee was asked if someone could serve as secretary, vice president or treasurer and also as a district director at the same time. The committee stated that the constitution does not allow the doubling up of positions based on the following rule: ARTICLE V – OFFICERS, SECTION 1: The Board of Directors of this club shall consist of four (4) officers, president vicepresident, secretary, treasurer, and nine (9) directors. Robert’s Rules of Order is also very clear as to how many votes each member has the right to. Please note “amendments may be submitted by any member, in writing, at any time during the year to the Constitution Chairman or at any regular or special meeting of this club.” Respectfully, Lisa Smith
