President’s Report I would like to start off by saying a big THANK YOU to all of the helpers who helped put on a wonderful Convention!! It was so nice to have so many people help out with everything this year!!

T

hanks to Angi Sheets for doing our booth decorations, which I thought looked wonderful!! A big thanks also goes to her husband Guy who watched over the booth on Sunday while the judging was going on. That is so appreciated, because it is a tough job to find someone willing to do that and miss out on the judging. I also had a wonderful gal whom I just met who helped out with the booth quite a bit. Sharon Moore was an absolute angel and showed up every time I needed to go do something, she just came out of the blue and said if you need to leave, I can watch it for you! Thank you Sharon!! My good friend Claudia Sweley was also a lot of help for us at the booth. She has also been my “pack mule” hauling all of the booth stuff out with me every night, and never complains! She just says, “What else do you need to bring with you?” and loads her arms up! Thanks Claudia! She is just as happy as I am that I won’t be the President next year and in charge of all of that “stuff”! LOL Thanks to Helen McKie for all of her help in the booth as well! Thank you to Carmen Deling for having our wonderful Boutique for us again this year! I think the aprons were a huge hit!! She also helped with setting up the booth. Great job!! Thanks goes to Brian Caudill for spearheading our Golden Fleece Auction and doing an outstanding job with the advertisement! That was a lot of work getting all of the breeders

to send in info and pics and get that all up on the website. Great Job Brian!! The animals were awesome, and the club made quite a bit of money this year thanks to all of Brian’s hard work. Thanks also to Anne Mills for working so closely with Brian in getting all of the pics up on the website! We also need to thank the donors of the animals! Without them, there would have been no auction! Thanks also to Angel Lesage and Brenda Reilly for helping with the auction as well. Thanks also goes to Brian Caudill for setting up a nice trio of animals for our Open trio. Rob Usakowski put our youth trio together and they raised $470.00 for the Brian Hartzell Memorial Scholarship!! Not everyone seems to be clear on the youth trio, some think it is just for the youth to buy tickets, but the reason we now have 2 trios, (an open trio and a youth trio) is because the youth decided they wanted to put together a trio of animals to sell tickets at convention to have the money earned put into the Brian Hartzell Memorial Scholarship Fund. So thanks to Rob and to Brian for getting these trios put together. I also need to thank Rob Usakowski for being our show Superintendent. He did a great job in getting all of the helpers for the show lined up. We had Deidre Edder and Brenda Reilly as our Open ramrods, and they kept the show moving right along. Thanks to them for the long, hard day they had Continued on page 28

Vice President’s Report Well another convention is in the books! I trust everyone had a great time with friends, rabbits and wool/ fur to spare. Congratulations to Brian Caudill our open BOB and BOSB winner, and Nicole & Logan Boulier our youth BOB and BOSB winners.

ongratulations also to Brian on Best Display and Jessica & Taylor Usakowski for Best Display in youth. These are all great accomplishments. Having a convention be successful, requires many people. So thank you to the many people that made so many things go well during the convention. There are too many to name here, but it really was a great effort by our club. Thank you also to those that just stepped in any time they saw a need. It was great to see a group of people that enjoy being around each other, having some fun, and some laughs. I loved one of the comments from a first time convention attender that they felt so welcomed into the woolies. As many of you know there are a few board changes and a few other changes taking place within the club. First, thank you to Denise Geick for serving as our president, and Linda Baker our treasurer. The responsibilities are quite large in these positions and they did a good job serving the club in these capacities. Also wrapping up their term on the board are District 7 Director, Steven Buell, and District 9 Director, Kim Cayton. Thank you to both of you for your input and thoughts while on the board. Welcome to new board members, Shonna Ausborne, Deidre Edder

and Brenda Westover. Thank you to Ashley Felton who will be moving from a district director position to be our new treasurer. The board has been having many discussions regarding what we can do to make the club better, and make it something of value to you as a member. After convention we sent out a survey to those that had rabbits entered at convention. This gave those that attended an opportunity to give feedback on their convention experience. We will also do the same thing with our general membership. Of course we always welcome your input directly to your district directors as well as the rest of the board. Some of the changes you will see are sweepstakes and “The Fluff”. Thank you to Dick Gehr for his work in these two areas. Both require a dedication and commitment that can be difficult to find. We are very excited about our new people that will be taking on these responsibilities. Dennis Alsup will be handling the sweeps, and Sandra Wight will be taking on the newsletter. I think you will see that Dennis will be great to work with if you have questions or concerns regarding your sweepstakes. I am asking that you have some patience during the transition. Secretary’s Report Well another Convention is behind us and now we are looking forward to the 2012 National. Congratulations to the Boulier kids and to Brian Caudill for winning BOB and BOS.

T

he quality of rabbits I observed was amazing. Anyone who thinks breeding and raising show quality rabbits are easy has obviously never tried it! They only “breed like rabbits” when you don’t want it to take. When you really want that litter, it won’t happen lol. Convention brought a lot of enjoyment to me personally. I met a bunch of new people and was able to put faces to names I only knew from the secretarial work. I got to talk to people I only know thru Facebook and I got to hang out and be goofy with friends I only get to see a couple times a year. That’s really the best part of Convention, the camaraderie. There can only be one winner at the shows so when it’s someone you know that wins, it make takes the sting of it not being your turn out of it. (Is my competitiveness showing?) I am thrilled for Brian’s wins this year. I have long admired his rabbits and have incorporated a few into our breeding program. Hopefully seeing all the incredible rabbits at Convention have driven us all to breed hard and cull harder. We had several new members sign up at Convention and many people renew. I will be working on the membership packets in the coming weeks. Keep encouraging the new folks to join. There is a lot of information available to them and plenty of people to help. This is our club, and as the saying goes, we are only as strong as our weakest link.

T h e

We need you, and your input to make this the great club it has the potential to be. There will be several changes coming down the pike and not all of them are going to be seamless. I hope you will be patient with us as wrinkles undoubtedly pop up. We are working to make things better on the whole. I’d like to introduce Sandra Wight to you as our Newsletter Editor. Have suggestions, ideas, or comments, contact her at wightout@socal.rr.com. I have found her to be a very willing listener. We want you to find value in the “Fluff”. Your input is important to us. Also taking on a new role will be Dennis Alsup. He is taking over the Sweeps and Sanctions. Elsewhere in the newsletter there will be contact information for him. This is no easy undertaking but I’m sure the membership will be understanding as we get things moving. I’d like to leave you with this final thought. I got something interesting in the mail the other day that got me to thinking. It was from a University asking the NJWRC to sponsor an award for their State 4H show. Although it is not feasible for the National Club to sponsor awards for every 4H show, we do have breeders who might be interested. What a better way to promote our lovely breed and to get more youth involved as well as to have the opportunity to mentor someone. If you are interested and need help finding Continued on page 28

Editors’s Report Hello, I should probably introduce myself since I’m fairly new to raising Jersey Wooly’s, though not to the rabbit world. Many of you saw me running around convention with a camera in my hand snapping pics of you & your friends and were probably wondering why.

I

’ d like to thank the Jersey Wooly board and members for being kind enough to allow me to be the Editor of “The Fluff”. I’m hoping to create a publication that can be uniquely ours. One that we can be proud of. As I mentioned, I’m new to Jersey Woolies, though not new to the rabbit world. I started raising rabbits as a 4H-er, and then got out before Woolies were even a recognized breed. I rejoined the rabbit world in 2001 when my son wanted a project and fell in love with Blue Eyed Netherland Dwarfs. We raised Dwarfs for 10 years when the Woolies caught my eye and I’ve been hooked hard since. My publishing background however, has been an uninterrupted hobby/career. My husband and I run Bullseye Advertising where we have done everything from print advertising (LA Dodgers), to movie and TV props (Madmen). Merging the world of rabbits and advertising seemed a natural way for us to support our hobby and even give back. We have been the editor of many guidebooks and specialty club publications, and have done numerous ads for rabbit members when we were approached by the Jersey Wooly club to take on their newsletter. I’ve always found the best way to meet fantastic people and really get to know the intricacies of a breed is to become a volunteer, and so when the club offered me the position, I eagerly accepted. In this issue we focused on all

T h e

F l u f f

things convention! Indy was exciting and I hope this issue captures even a portion of that. Watching The Boullier kids take Best AND Best Opposite of Breed with two stunning animals was a great moment. Then heading over to the open area to watch Brian Caudill do the same thing was amazing. Lightening does sometimes strike twice! Photographing the Best of Breed judging was like having a front row seat to the Superbowl for me. I was blessed to see, up close, some amazing animals. Congratulations to all the winners. From the person who had the bird’s eye view of all the winners. I can say that they were breathtaking. In this issue we’ve also featured the top open and youth herdsman for 2011 together with some of the fabulous Woolies they’ve bred and shown. I hope that they will inspire you as they have me. What I do know is that I’ve got some work to do! You’ll also notice that we have full page color ads on the covers. These will be available on a first come, first served basis at $100 for a full page ad. Advertising in the Fluff is a great way to get your rabbitry name out there and promote your Woolies. Rates are reasonable, and if you reserve your space for a year, your ad design is free. The board has been discussing many exciting directions for the magazine, so stay tuned for more additions. If you have a suggestion to make the magazine more exciting, please let us know.

District 1 Report Hey District One, Things are finally getting all caught up around here, and buns are settling in after their long trip to, and from Indiana.

he buns are just now starting to get back in the swing of things, and put on that much needed flesh condition that was lost on the trip. A few treats now and then have helped to put the condition back on quickly, in addition to loads and loads of hay. As most of the show animals from district one were transported by vehicle, the majority lost some condition on their trip. The animals that flew, on the other hand, fared much better as they had a quicker trip to and from Indianapolis. I was very happy to see many district one breeders exhibiting at

t is really a thrill to be honored as the 2010/2011 Youth Herdsman of the Year, as there were so many beautiful Jersey Woolies exhibited this year in youth. Every year we have been showing rabbits, we have set goals for ourselves and we can proudly say we have achieved our goal to be the #1 herdsman. Our two foundation bucks come from North Woods Wooly Rabbitry. We are so grateful they allowed two handsome bucks to come live at Three Little Ladies Rabbitry. Thank you Tessa! We are in awe to have produced TLL’s Jack, Jealous Yet?, Ladies Man, Lucky Penny, Can You Handle This? Molly, Hot Shot, Tymon, Hart & Soul to name a few of our herd that have done well at the show tables. We are thankful for all of the friends we have met in the awesome hobby, whether at a local show or across the states or at convention. We would also like to thank all of the judges, open breeders and youth breeders that have taken the time to give us advice and tips on raising Jersey Woolies. We have always felt that helping others in our hobby is important in making the Jersey Wooly breed better, and winning is a nice extra bonus!

the show. Participation from district one has been minimal, at best in the past, and over the past couple of years, significantly more district one presence has been seen on the convention show tables. It was great to be able to see all my good Wooly friends again, both those in district one, as well as those around the nation. That is one of my favorite parts of going to convention! I love socializing with fellow Wooly breeders, seeing how they do things, as you can always pick up some new tips, and tricks from them.

District 2 Report What a great fall we have had! With the cooler weather, there has been an increase in the number of shows and there are new exhibitors at the tables.

O

ur shows generally have 25 to 40 rabbits on the table; this is down from 2 years ago where we were seeing more JW exhibited. I am hoping for a comeback with more people becoming interested in Woolies. The number of youth exhibitors is down and often times there are only 1 to 4 rabbits in a youth show. We do have several strong youth exhibitors, but they are struggling from the lack of rabbits on the table and getting to shows. They often have to switch to open to compete. The Pacific Coast Wooly Rabbit Club continues to sponsor specialty shows and we have had 4 over the summer and

fall. I have a master email list of JW exhibitors for the district. If you do not think you are on my list and want to be notified of specialty shows taking place, please email me. Convention is now history, and I have to tell you that I just loved attending Convention and Nationals. There is nothing like these big shows. It is a great opportunity to meet breeders from all over the county, to swap stories, rabbit information, and to go over bunnies with someone else. I live in a rural area and there are no other rabbit exhibitors close to me, so networking with other breeders is quite valuable, plus I look

y name is Eric Lorentsen; I live in Long Island NY. I maintain a small herd of 50 rabbits. It’s an honor to have received this award as I work hard to create and progress my herd. Winning an award like this makes it all worth it. I first started in rabbits 3 years ago with Hollands and Mini Rex(didn’t care much for the baldies) then I got my first Woolies and is the only breed I raise today. I have to thank Paul Buckley for selling me a nice herd buck, PB’s Little Blue Max and has made a lasting impression on my herd and can be traced back to many of my Woolies. Breeders like Paul make this breed enjoyable to raise as he enjoys helping us Youth who are the future of this breed and hobby. There are many people who have helped me out and inspired me, they know who they are. Since I have started in Woolies I have seen a lot of progress in this breed. Progress is something I strongly believe in and has to be done and planned in every breeding for the good of our breed and that premise has gotten my herd to what it is today. What makes the woolies so interesting is the constant progression of our breed. One of my biggest accomplishments is an Open BIS I won this year with a home bred,

T h e

Angel LeSage

EMR’s Noel. This has been a great accomplishment for my breeding program. Noel was also the number 11 rabbit for this year. I have a few color programs this year and am striving to make them all competitive including my Agoutis, Shadeds, Selfs, and Brokens. I am looking forward to showcasing my herd during the 2011-2012 show season. See you at the shows! Right:

t hought in general the convention went really well. The judging not starting at the time we thought threw all the schedules off and then having judging on two days seemed to make the time go faster. All in all we had a great time. One of the things we were asked to write about is what we do when we get home. For me it’s to get any new rabbits settled and eating. I also keep a watchful eye on the ones that attended to see if they come home and eat. We also had a few wet noses from the stall dry getting kicked up, we watch them to make sure they clear up or do they need help. After

started showing Woolys with my daughter when she was 9 years old and by the time she got into high school I was also showing. Our first Wooly came from a youth breeder, Mary May Engles. It was a doe and the first time my daughter showed her she got a trophy and we were hooked. Over the years, I usually take advantage at convention by buying rabbits from other parts of the county. I won BOB at the 2006 ARBA convention in Texas with a Siamese Sable junior doe that was sired by a buck that I bought from Marcia Hinkleman the year before. I have never had rabbits that do well in “rabbit of the year” instead I tend to do well in herdsman and overall sweeps. However, I do have several rabbits that stand out for me. First being, Erb’s DeLove ear # LOVE, I bought her in Kentucky when she was 3 months old. She is a beautiful REW that shows well and has won 2 BIS. Two other favorites of mine are LeSage’s Operator #M2T and LeSage’s Two Step # 57 both are smoke pearl bucks that show with consistency. LeSage’s Shez-A-Dream #WB2, a REW, has a bit of a “witchy” personality but she was special right out of the nest box. She has had many BOB’s and several honorable mentions when competing for BIS but she never quite made it all the way.

a couple days there was no sign they ever had a problem. Next is to get the new pedigrees in the computer and see what breeding needs to be done. Other then catching up the chores that didn’t get done we are back to normal. Now to finish power spraying all the cages so they are ready and clean for the winter. I burn off all the hair and power spray 2x a year. If possible I like to worm and treat for Coccidiosis at the same time. I use Ivermectin paste, Wazine wormer and Corid. For some reason the combination of Ivermectin paste and Wazine will help prevent Wry Neck. It works for me. Continued on page 29

I feel being successful with herdsman award helps me know if I am on track. I am looking for consistency and quality throughout my herd. And if it wasn’t for my husband helping with the infrastructure for my barn and taking care of my rabbits while I travel, I would not be as successful. Having safe housing and a clean barn with a stable environment is one of the key things that help produce quality animals. My future goals are to continue to improve my herd and to be competitive in showing. I cannot tell you why I like showing so much but I do. I don’t mind all the work it takes to keep my herd and I especially like meeting all the people who share in the love of Jersey Woolys. Left:

District 4 Report Hello District 4 Members, I was thinking about to what to write in this article for the newsletter, I came up with a few items. One I want to say congratulations to all the winners at convention. I wish I could have joined them this year, but I will be attending next year.

I

have been to very few shows this time around. I did attend the Tulsa State Fair, we had a good turn out in youth and open in woolies this year. Annie Davis and Roselea Stout took the honors of BOB and BOSB on the Tulsa State Fair show on Saturday in youth division. Karen Sequira took BOB in the open division. As the cool weather is now finally here, we are starting to see new babies pop up in the nest boxes. We finally have a couple new litters now. Other breeders in the district are starting to report new litters also.

#2

Now that convention is behind us, a lot of folks look for the next big shows or breeding for the spring time juniors. Myself, I am working on spring babies right now. Now we are starting to think about winter time and protecting our bunnies from the elements. Remember to check there water supply frequently during the freezing weather and also add some warmth to their cages. Hay helps with insulating there cages and they will nibble on it too. 2011 Open Top Herdsman Deidre Edder

My name is Deidre Edder, I have been breedi n g / s h o w i n g Jersey Woolies for over 18 years. I am very proud of the work I have done with my herd; my original does had at least 3 dqs each. I have worked hard to produce top quality Woolies in Agouti, Self, Shaded, Brokens and Tans. (I do not breed aovs due to the extreme heat here in South Carolina. Until two years ago I was based in the Atlanta Georgia area, then I moved to Columbia SC. I try really hard to produce a show string of great depth; winning with many different animals each year instead of over and over with one or two animals. I do not retire animals when they are in their prime, so my young stock has to beat the top veterans to win their BOB and BIS wins. Also my animals are active in the breeding program; taking time out to produce litters, then returning to the judging table. I rear all my animals on pellets and hay without giving grains, greens or conditioning supplements. I also do not use chemical agents ; deworm or treat for coccidia or respiratory infections; concentrating

District 5 Report With Convention a few short weeks ago, I want to reflect on what my positive experiences were. First, undoubtedly, was the opportunity to, along with Bill Patrick, judge our youth’s Jerseys.

he quality of the animals that I judged was outstanding and our youth are to be commended on their hard work and dedication in producing quality animals. Certainly related to this is the quality of our youth members. As I had the opportunity to observe them across the judging table, at the Golden Fleece auction, and at other times during the week, I realized that the future of our club is in good hands. Keep up the good work! Working with our Board of Directors was a positive experience and the decisions we made will, I think, make our club better. Some of the

decisions were relatively easy and others were more troublesome, but the overriding motive was “What’s best for the Club” With that goal in the forefront our Board made positive decisions. It was a joy to work with them. The Golden Fleece auction was a huge success. Kudos to Brian Caudill in organizing it. I will admit to a bit of deja vu during the auction, having a flashback to my first ARBA convention in 1992. I was watching the Mini Rex auction where the bid for an animal was approaching $900. My youngest daughter walked up with Continued on page 30

am very happy to be in 3rd place for Herdsman of the year. I really don’t keep a large number of rabbits. Usually winning with the same rabbit over and over and not really spreading the wealth to my herd. So this means I did a little better this year showing more individual rabbits that did well. Its nice to know that you have more then one winner in the barn. I thinks this means that your breedings are becoming more consistant and that is hard for the judges to pick just the same rabbit everytime. I am very honored to be third. Looking forward to this year and have already had wins with four or five different rabbits. Below:

District 6 Report Convention Memories...I have to say that I had a great time at convention this year. I have strived for that BOB at convention for so long I really am not sure how many years it has been. My guess is around 18 years that I have been a member of the National Jersey Wooly Club. I have spent these years going to convention and never obtaining that all mighty BOB. I always found myself coming home and regrouping. Doing certain culls, planning breedings, and trying to decide what the best thing for my herd would be for the upcoming year. I always wondered if I did win? Would I come home and go through the same process? Would I finally feel that my herd was good enough? Well the answer is yes. I found myself the first night going through the herd and

doing the same thing I have done for years. I culled, I regrouped, I planned future breedings, Matching new bucks with old does. I was surprised, I really thought I would kick back and say job well done. I like many other breeders always find things that I can improve on in my herd. Its a never ending process no matter where you stand in the ratings or how well your rabbits are doing on the table. Taking BOB and BOSB at convention was a dream come true for me. I want to say thanks for every one’s congrats, back pats and job well done that I

District 7 Report Hello D7, Convention has come and gone and a great time was had by all. I want to say congrats to all the winners! I was able to watch some of the youth judging and wrote for the open.

here were some VERY nice looking rabbits on the tables, and the judges did a great job. In youth I know Eric Lorentson placed well in the self group, winning the group with his senior buck. Melanie Lyons placed second in the same class. In open, Sharon Sartori placed second in the tan senior buck class. My mom and I were lucky enough to win opposite of group AOV with our senior doe. With that being said, I hope many of you are planning on attending nationals in March in Greensboro, NC. This club did a great job hosting nationals a few years back and I’m sure they will do the same this year.

Numbers seem to be down for woolies in the area...so I encourage all of you to try and promote our wonderful breed. Help out newcomers. If you are helping someone get started, be sure to get them stock you would be proud to put on the tables yourself. Especially talk to the youth! They are, after all, the future of our hobby. As of the start of the new year Brenda Westover will be taking over as your new district director. She has held this position before, and she will do a great job again. So...everyone have a safe winter and keep warm. I will hopefully be seeing some of you at the shows in the spring.

District 8 Report The Indy Convention is history & I believe most of us, if not all, had a great time. The board meeting on Saturday evening was very productive & there were some changes to our newsletter & web site that will thrill us all.

W

e are moving forward and I believe we are on the right track. This meeting was special because we had enough board members to conduct offical business and make decisions, only one director was missing. I do think we have to consider having our newly elected board members begin their term at future ARBA Conventions instead of the calender year. Newer board members usually have fresher ideas than lame duck ones. We wanted to improve the quality of our Golden Fleece auction and we hit the nail on the head. We might

still need to tweak it a little but the quality was outstanding compared to years past. A large thank you to Brian, Deidre and the crew and a special thanks to all the buyers that got some great rabbits. I had a great time judging the youth Woolies with Ray Hall. I thought the BOB Broken buck was a outstanding rabbit with great balance, and with his natural posing ability, gave him a edge. The top four rabbits that I judged in my classes were first and second broken senior bucks and first and second senior self

any of you have met me at some of the larger state shows & conventions in the Jersey Wooly area helping Brian Caudill with our rabbits. I am taking over the position of Sanction/Sweepstakes Chairperson and am very excited to help the club out with this endeavor. I will do my best to keep updates as current as possible. I wanted to ask everyone to please be patient with the initial transition, however, as I will be awaiting information from Richard “Dick” Gehr; concerning the previously submitted show results, etc. I have set up an email

address, specifically for the purpose of conducting this business. I welcome any questions, concerns, & suggestions. I’ll be happy to read/review and get back to you as soon as possible. One thing I would like to ask/ suggest is that all NJWRC members, both youth & open, please make a conscious effort to keep record of your show reports/legs so if there is ever a question of points received, etc. we can easily go back and review that and get a correction made. Again, I look forward to working with the NJWRC board & members in this position .

Officer & Director Reports Continued (President’s report continued from pg 3)

to put in! Because of a snafu with the show committee, we had no show table to start out on right away, and we wound up not getting judging started until 3:00 pm. Thanks to our judges also who had to wait that long. Everyone made the best of the circumstances. Thanks to Haley Birkholz who was our ramrod for the youth tables, and also helped us finish up the open on Monday. Thanks to the writers for the open tables, Angi Sheets, Kelsey Schultz, Steven Buell and Robert Geisenhof. I think there were a few others that helped out too, and the next morning, but I can’t seem to remember them all, so if I have forgotten to mention you, I am truly sorry! My brain is still mush from all of the stuff going on during convention! Thanks to Cathie Usakowski for writing for the youth and to Katie McNab for being the secretary for the youth. Everything went so smoothly! Great job to all of our runners in both open and youth, even the judges commented on how quickly everyone got the classes up and kept the show moving right along!! Thank you to April Stigall for doing our banquet arrangements and for collecting the monies and taking care of all of that! Jessica and Taylor Usakowski and Haley Birkholz were great at handing out the awards at the banquet! Thank you girls!! I am just so very sorry the sweepstakes awards did not make it to the banquet. Our awards person Nancy Delaney will be sending these out as soon as she can get them all done. She did do some awesome awards for us again!! Thank you very much Nancy!!! Thank you to Brenda Reilly for setting up the raffle and to Shonna Ausborne for collecting items for the raffle, and also for getting our awards sponsors!! We truly had a lot of people helping out this year and really put on a nice convention show! We simply would not be as successful without each and every one of them! I need to also thank Dick Gehr for all of his hard work on doing our newsletter and sweepstakes. It was a lot of hard work getting our sweeps done after his computer was hit by a virus, and he lost everything. It was a lot of work emailing all of the secretaries to have show reports sent in again, and then having to re-enter them all. His work was very much appreciated!

We do now have a new Newsletter Editor - Sandra Wight! Your newsletter may look a little different starting with this issue. Many of you may have seen Sandra taking pictures at the convention during judging, and also at the end she took all of the group winners. She is going to do a fantastic job for us, and I feel very lucky we have her working for us! We also have a new sweepstakes chairperson. Dennis Alsup has requested the pleasure of doing our points for us. Please hold onto your show reports and make sure that all of your shows get recorded. Things can get missed when a new person is taking over in the middle of a sweeps year. Dick will make sure all of the reports he has received will be recorded before sending the stuff over to Dennis, but there will be a transitioning period in there. His information is up on the website now, so please check with your show secretaries to make sure they are sending the sanction requests to Dennis now, instead of Dick. One thing I was most pleased with at this years’ convention, was it seemed like every time I walked down an aisle going back and forth to the judging tables, (which was frequent) I heard long time breeders answering questions, and mentoring up and coming breeders. It truly was heart- warming to see! All kinds of questions were being asked , everything from the best wool caps, to shaded coloring preferences, correct ear carriage and placement! What a wealth of information was being shared thanks to our wonderful long time breeders! It was also great to see all of the support for our breeders with new varieties being presented! Sorry to say none of them passed, but they had a lot of supporters rooting for them. Hopefully they will be presented again next year. Last but not least I need to thank our judges and exhibitors. It was great how the judges in the open and the youth both mentioned how well they liked judging for us! They truly enjoyed working together with each other, and with working with our ramrods, writers and runners, and of course all of our exhibitors! Made it one of my favorite conventions ever! (Vice President’s report continued from page 4)

Although we have made efforts to contact all the show secretaries about the change there are some that will send the

information to Mr. Gehr based on our old printed information. Sandra has already begun working on a complete redesign of “The Fluff”. Because we agreed to take her on just a couple of weeks before articles are due, I think you will see even more changes in the Spring issue. The board is also concerned about content, and are working on a plan to improve the content of the newsletter/magazine as well. I am certain that this publication is going to be one that you are very proud of and find as a valuable resource. Finally, I am excited to be stepping in as the new President of the club. I look forward to working with our new board. We truly have a great group of people on the board. I like that they each can look at things in so many different ways and come up with solutions that are best for the club. I personally welcome your input on club matters and look forward to the next two years serving the club in this capacity. Hope to see you all in North Carolina for a great time at the Jersey Wooly nationals. Secretary’s Report Continued from page 5

the information you need, just ask. If I can’t find the information, I will direct you to someone who can. May your nest boxes be filled with the next big winner! District 1 Report Continued from page 8)

The convention in Indianapolis, in my opinion, went very smooth. The only real hiccup we had for the Jersey Woolies was the lack of a judging table(s) to begin the wooly judging as a starting breed. Because of this the open Jersey Wooly judging was started at 3:00pm after the American Fuzzy Lops had finished their judging. The judging was stopped for the night, and then resumed the next morning, which ran into the general membership meeting time slot. A quick general membership meeting was held at the NJWRC banquet to make up for the missed meeting. Overall, everything worked out, and everyone just went with the flow, and maintained their good spirits. Coming home from convention, I really get inspired to go through and figure out my game plan. I typically go through the entire herd playing match maker, determining future breedings, evaluating upcoming juniors and seeing

if there are any animals I feel can move on to new breeding homes. I love walking down the aisles at convention looking at the different styles of Jersey Woolies, and pointing out features that I like about particular animals. It gives me a mental picture of what I want my animals to look like, and that’s what I breed and cull for. Overall, I think convention is a very valuable experience. Not only do you have the option to meeting wonderful people, but you get to see how your animals stack up against reputable breeders across the nation, and even have the opportunity to purchase quality stock from breeders who are not in your general area. For those of you who are on the fence about attending next year’s convention. Make the plans to attend. Please welcome our new incoming District One Director Shonna Ausbourne. She will be taking office in January 2012, so expect to hear from her next year. She will be a great asset to the National Jersey Wooly Rabbit Club Board and will be a wonderful representative for our District. I am happy to turn over the responsibilities of director to a knowledgeable Jersey Wooly breeder who has a passion for helping the club reach its full potential. Thank you for your support in allowing me to serve as you director for the past two years, I feel that this experience will help me to better serve you as Treasurer of the NJWRC. Thank you for everything District One and I want to reassure you that you are in good hands! See you in Wichita. District 2 Report Continued from page 9

forward to seeing good friends every year. We talk about new grooming techniques, feeding regimes, and bodies. We go over each other’s rabbits and talk about what they should look and feel like. These are some of my greatest rabbit experiences. Also, I have to say this is the only time of the year that I feel I am not crazy because I love showing rabbits. Most people I know politely say nothing but think I am nuts. Being from California we are usually really far from the national shows and many people from District 2 cannot make the journey. We had 5 brave exhibitors from California attend convention this year, and let me tell you just getting across the county is a feat in itself without taking bunnies along. However, for Amber Henderson the trip was well worth it. She did exceptionally well, winning BOG with

T h e

F l u f f

her shaded senior doe and BOSG with her shaded senior buck. Congratulations Amber. Way to go! It was so nice to be there to cheer you on. I asked Amber to write some of her thoughts about her experiences. Here is what she had to say: “This is the first year I have shown the first fruits of my new Shaded program. I had high hopes for them but I was both surprised and thrilled with their Group wins of BOG and BOSG (daughter and sire, respectively). My BOG rabbit’s litter mate also showed well with the placement of 4th Shaded Sr. doe. These wins were significant to me, not just because I am new to the Shaded Group, but because they are actually the result of two years of careful planning, patience, and selection. I felt that taking my time with the start of my project was especially important because I have a very small number of holes for my herd and work to be competitive on the national level. My purpose in writing this is that I do not want anyone to think that, because they are limited to keeping a small herd, there are also limits to the quality they can produce. It is simply not true. You can be successful with a small herd! Good tips for the success of a small herd are the same for a large herd - set a goal, breed smart, cull hard (very hard), and be patient. Two more suggestions that are especially important for the small herd breeder are; Increase your vision of what is possible. If you can see and feel the best “parts” of several top quality Woolies you can piece together and solidify your own vision of the Woolies you want in your barn someday and then work toward that goal. So, ask exhibitors, whose rabbits you really admire, if they you will show you what they feel are the best features of their winning rabbits. If they have time, they will help you. And, lastly, when someone tells you that you should not expect too much from your small herd, enthusiastically take on the challenge of proving to yourself that you can! Amber If you think you might make Nationals in Greensboro NC it is time right now to start making plans and reservations. I am currently writing an article on “Flying with Rabbits” that will be in the up-coming edition of the guidebook. I also expect to post it on the NJWRC website. My hope is that this article will take the mystery and fear out flying with the rabbits. Take care and enjoy your bunnies.

Oh yea, I also enclosed our horse barn with steel and moved all the 50 outside animals in for the winter, now when I get home late they will be inside and have a light to see by. This is great compared to going outside to feed and water when its 30 below. On with winter! Congratulations are also in store for the Erb Family. They got 2 BIS’s last weekend with two different rabbits in one day! Way to go Emmett and Romy! I am in love with Emmett he is awesome!

District 4 report continued from page 11

I also want District 4 members to remember to send me your ideas and topics for articles and or questions you may have or want addressed in a future issues. I am here for the members of District 4 to help out anyone who needs it. If I don’t have the answer I will find the right person to ask and get the answer if all possible. Around Oklahoma and even here in Arkansas, we have been filling some earthquakes recently which could have upset your bunnies some, so I would try to make things as smooth as possible for them and look for any for possible issues that could have happen during the tremors. We also need to remember to be extra helpful to any newcomers to the breed and answer any questions they may have. We also need to be there for our youth breeders as they are the future open breeders and help them any way we can even if its only to help the carry their carriers or show them where there show tables are for their bunnies. We also need to remember to be kind to each other and praise the winners on their wins. I know that we all want to win, but that isn’t always the case and we need to say congratulations to the winners. I think at times folks forget their manners and get upset at times thinking the judge didn’t pick the correct rabbit. I am the opposite of that when a bunny from our barn wins, I try to figure out why the judge picked our rabbit and what made it stand out from the rest of them. I always think that other bunnies are better than ours, so I look for every way to improve our herd in any little bit. So I want the members of district 4

Officer & Director Reports Continued to remember to be good sports and say thank you and congratulate the winners. If you didn’t win and want to know where you can improve on your bunnies ask the judge when they are not busy what you can do to improve your bunnies next time. It never hurts to ask just remember to ask after judge is done with his or her job and most of the time the judge will be glad to answer your questions. So until next time remember to hug your wooly and may all your nest boxes be full of future winners. I am also on Facebook if anyone wants to find me on there to ask questions just type in my name and just put in the subject district 4 woolies. (District 5 report continued from page 12)

“Hi Dad. What’s going on?’ I quickly murmured, “Don’t nod; don’t raise your hand, the rabbit they’re selling is approaching $900.” When one of the Jerseys in the Fleece was nearing that same amount I made certain I did nothing that Deidre could mistake for a bid. LOL Congrats to everyone who donated animals, attended, bid, and bought the quality Jerseys offered. You helped make this our most successful Golden Fleece ever! On a personal note, Barbara and I were pleased with the placement of our entries. No, we didn’t win any classes, but we did improve over previous years. In an email Brian Caudill said that after returning home he started thinking about matings for next year’s entries. I must admit that we did also. Our goal--and probably yours too--is to improve. Good luck to everyone. Finally, a real positive to meet and make new friends: persons whose names I recognized from the Jersey web site, or from the pages of the Fluff, or names on a pedidgree. They became “real” to me. I count myself fortunate to add all of you to my circle of friends. With the Holidays quickly approaching Barbara and I wish you and your family “Happy Holidays” and we look forward to seeing you at the shows--or next year in Wichita. pink bug to wear on my shoulder next year...That baby brought me some luck.. With Convention being a day shorter this year, it made it seem even more rushed. I found myself going to bed early and getting up early just because there was so much to be done in such a short time. I want to thank everyone who helped me change the Golden Fleece Auction this year. We had some really great rabbits that were donated by some really great breeders. My goal of making it a auction we could all be proud of was surpassed times ten. I really was moved by the rabbits and by the number of people that turned up for the auction. In the past years you could always find room to go over the rabbits prior to the auction. This year there were so many people at the auction that you really had to wait in line to get your hands on the rabbits. I was so proud of the prices that the rabbits were going for. I have actually had other clubs contact me asking me how we did it. they wanted guidelines to go by so they could have a successful Auction. I guess the word gets around when you have a Wooly go for over $900 in a auction. I know that my mouth dropped farther the higher it went. I would like to thank Ann Mills and Sandra Wight for all the help they gave me on putting the auction together. Ann had them on the website within a hour of me sending them to her. Sandra made the flyer’s that were the icing on the cake. Last but not least all the exhibitors that donated a Rabbit. You really made the auction by giving up a rabbit that you wanted to keep. I appreciate all of you for that sacrifice. I hope to start planning the next auction sometime early next year. Hopefully it will turn out as well as this one did. Again thank you to the donaters, the buyers, the helpers, Deidre Edder for being the mouth of the auction, Even if you were just standing there watching... Thank you.. We as a board are working very hard to improve our club. We have a new newsletter editor, Sandra Wight, I am sure that you will all enjoy this issue of the “Fluff”. I know its going to be very awesome and cant wait to see it myself. We are also working on other things to improve our club. Hopefully some of those topics will be covered else where in this newsletter. Anytime that you as a member have ideas to improve the club as a whole, please

30

contact your director and tell them your thoughts. I would like to say that I am always so impressed with the exhibitors of the Wooly breed. For those of you that have never attended convention, you really need to try and attend next year. The sense of family that is exuded by our members is overwhelming. Its like a family reunion every year. We stand around the show tables picking on each other and catching up on the last year activities. I know that a lot of clubs have exhibitors that don’t get along and cant be around each other, But you really don’t see that with this breed. I am always proud to say that I am a Jersey Wooly breeder. I always have a great time at convention, win or lose. It truly is the people and the breed that keeps me coming back year after year. This year we did something different as far as our banquet. I have not been able to attend the last few years because usually it is at the same time that the Standards Committee is going over the presentation animals. This year we had it in the evening. We had a great time at Dave &Busters. April Stigall did a awesome job finding the place and assuring that a great time was had by all. I had a really great time and it was nice to see all the kids get their awards and it was nice just to sit down and break bread with people that you haven’t had a chance to chat with yet. It was great to See Marcia Hinkleman be accepted into the Jersey Wooly Hall of Fame. She has always been a valued member of this club and it was nice to see that for once.....She was speechless..If you missed that it probably won’t happen again.. Well there is only so much spaced that I am allowed. So i guess I will have to say goodbye for now. I want to thank everyone again who had a part in making this convention one of my best ones so far. It will be hard to beat the convention of 2011 but its always fun to try. (District 8 report continued from page 14)

does. I also thought that the Youth BOB was every bit as good as the open winners. Untill next time. District 8 members are invited to send me any imformation that will make this report more productive and will help to keep us all informed of the Wooly happenings in our region.

ach year the youth members of the NJWRC hold a raffle for a trio of top quality Jersey Wooly rabbits. We ask our top youth members and those that have won the top honors at our National and Convention shows to part with some of their best stock to be included in this trio. The proceeds from the youth trio are designated toward the Brian Hartzell Youth Scholarship fund. This scholarship was set up with donations made in memory of Brian, and continues with the youth trio funds. Brain was a very active member of our club, as well as an ARBA Judge, and a youth advisor. We are proud to carry on the scholarship in his memory, and to announce the 2011 recipient of the Brian Hartzell Memorial Youth Scholarship is Michael Perez of California.
