greetings, friends! Performances of the classics of the great American Songbook have always been a vital part of each season here at the Arts Center.

Shine Studio Portrait 2018

Over the years, interpreters as varied as Tony Bennett, Barbara Cook, John Pizzarelli, Christine Ebersole, Kristen Chenoweth, Audra McDonald and more have thrilled NJPAC audiences, in spaces as large as Prudential Hall or as intimate as our Chase Room cabaret. John Schreiber President & CEO

This timeless music has always been a special favorite of mine. I’m especially looking forward to two Prudential Hall performances in mid-March: Michael Feinstein at 3PM on March 14, and Johnny Mathis at 8PM on March 20. I have fond memories of each of these remarkable artists. The first time I heard Michael was in 1986, when he made his New York debut at the acclaimed Oak Room at the Algonquin Hotel. In those days, Bobby Short was holding court at the Cafe Carlyle, and great singers like Mabel Mercer and Sylvia Sims were performing at the St. Regis Room and Downstairs at the Upstairs. It wasn’t unusual for Tony Bennett to sit in with virtuoso pianist Ellis Larkins at the Carnegie Café. Into that milieu came this fresh-faced singer-pianist who knew the words to every Gershwin song ever written — as well he should have, since he was Ira Gershwin’s assistant for six years, charged with archiving the lyricist’s papers. On first hearing him, I immediately understood that Michael’s was a talent for the ages, and he has borne out that first impression. He not only is a wonderful musician but he’s also this genre’s preeminent historian: He created the Great American Songbook Foundation and donated his collection of sheet music and musical memorabilia — one of the largest in the world — to The Center for the Performing Arts in Carmel, Indiana, where he serves as Artistic Director. Johnny Mathis has been a star for as long as many of us have been alive. His recording career goes back to the late 1950s, when he — an athlete of some repute — skipped the Olympic track trials to cut his first album. “It’s Not for Me to Say” came out in 1956, and his career hasn’t stopped since.

Johnny is beloved by his millions of fans and judging from the last time I heard him, which was less than a year ago, his voice is as strong and poignant as ever. His phrasing is unique and affecting. Unexpectedly, the first time I heard Johnny sing was at the Newport Jazz Festival in New York, back in 1974. A pop singer at a jazz festival? Not as unlikely as you might think, as Johnny’s early recordings were heavily influenced by jazz. The great tradition of the American Songbook is one that goes back more than a century, and the remarkable composers who informed its catalog — Irving Berlin, Rodgers and Hart, Frank Loesser, Jule Styne and Sammy Cahn — are never better served than when a vital icon like Michael Feinstein or Johnny Mathis presents their work. I encourage you to join us at the Arts Center on both nights, for what will likely be two masterclasses in singing. All good wishes,

‘Always writing about love’ Gregory Porter’s signature sound highlights NJPAC’s Valentine’s Day weekend By Jay Lustig

Gregory Porter

Singer-songwriter Gregory Porter, whose rich, resonant baritone is one of the wonders of the current jazz scene, is scheduled to perform at NJPAC’s Prudential Hall two days after Valentine’s Day, at 7PM February 16 or, to put it another way, the Sunday of Valentine’s Weekend. But it’s not like he’ll have to make a huge change from his usual repertoire.

“I’m always writing about love,” he says, in that distinctive voice. Porter will be joined in Newark by Ledisi; the concert is part of a short co-headlining tour. They have done shows together before, and at the star-studded “Q 85: A Musical Celebration for Quincy Jones” concert at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles in 2018, they dueted

on “Everything Must Change,” from Jones’ 1974 album Body Heat. Ledisi is also joining Porter for a song on their upcoming album. “She’s just one of the best voices in the world, so it’s awesome to work with her,” says Porter. He will also use the show to preview some material from his next album, All Rise, due out in April. “There are two things that the show will focus on: My love songs, and songs from the new record,” he says. Porter’s last album, 2017’s Nat King Cole & Me, paid tribute to one of his biggest influences. All Rise is very different: “Fifteen original songs,” he says, “recorded by my band and the London Symphony Orchestra, in the

Ledisi

vein of my style of writing about the ups and downs of love and life, and subtle protest of some ills and wrongs going on around the world, or in the country.” Born in Sacramento and raised in Bakersfield, CA, Porter moved to Brooklyn about 15 years ago and built a following in local clubs. He released his first album in 2010, at the somewhat advanced age (for a musician) of 38, and is particularly popular in England, where his last three studio albums have reached the Top 10 of the pop charts. He has a trademark look, wearing hats with fabric that reaches down to cover his ears and chin. He has said he got into the habit of wearing them as a child, after suffering some facial scarring.

Though Porter is usually classified as a jazz artist—and has won GRAMMYs in the Jazz Vocal Album category for Liquid Spirit (2013) and “ It’s just a beautiful Take Me to the Alley (2016)— voice that can do and Ledisi is usually labeled any type of music... R&B, Porter says they have and likewise, I’m a lot in common. “I think she the same.” employs, in her voice, all of the –Gregory Porter on Ledisi things that are in jazz and soul and gospel. It’s just a beautiful voice that can do any type of music. She could do classical, if she wanted to. She can be a gospel singer. And likewise, I’m the same.” That kind of open-mindedness comes through in Porter’s songwriting, as well. “I always approach this thing organically,” he says. “In writing the song, if it feels like it’s going (continued on next page) 7

about love... (continued from previous page)

towards a soul direction, I let it go there. Sometimes a song is birthed with its own DNA, and even if you try to change it, even if you’re like, ‘Let me put a swing beat on this,’ it’s like, ‘No.’ Sometimes it will wrench itself right back to where it’s supposed to be! And so I let it be that. “And the way I listen to music is that way. I think the way people listen to music ... though lovers of jazz, they’re not zealots. They also appreciate Bob Marley and B.B. King. In my mind ... in my writing, and how I can handle the music stylistically, it’s the family of music and it belongs together.”   •

Raphael Saadiq

Also helping to make Valentine’s Weekend at NJPAC a romantic one: Raphael Saadiq, one of the most dazzling all-around talents of the neo-soul movement, originally rose to fame as a member of the groups Tony! Toni! Toné and Lucy Pearl before going solo in 2002, and is also an in-demand producer who has worked with the likes of Whitney Houston, Mary J. Blige, TLC, Joss Stone and John Legend. He’ll perform with support from Jamila Woods and DJ Duggz, on Friday, February 14 at 8PM in Prudential Hall. Patrizio Buanne, who grew up in Austria and Naples, has developed a worldwide following over the last 20 years—and inspired comparisons to icons such as Frank Sinatra and Michael Bublé—with his ultraromantic crooning. He’ll be on the Lizzie & Jonathan Tisch Stage at Victoria Theater on Saturday, February 15 at 8PM. And in what’s become a tradition at the Arts Center, on the Saturday of Valentine’s Day weekend, Prudential Hall will be filled with laughter at the Valentine’s All Star Comedy Show, starting at 8PM on February 15. Newark native Bill Bellamy (Any Given Sunday, Insecure) will lead a team of comics including Luenell (from Eddie Murphy’s new Netflix film, Dolemite Is My Name), Don “D.C.” Curry (from Next Friday) and Sheryl Underwood (co-host of The Talk).

Imagining the possibilities From costume design to art therapy, Newark tells NJPAC what a new community center would bring to downtown

Grizel Ubarry

How do you have a conversation with a whole city? You start with someone who knows that city incredibly well.

Today, as a management and development consultant with a focus on helping nonprofits, Ubarry helps both neighborhoods and organizations negotiate change.

Grizel Ubarry, a management consultant and community development expert, has worked in Newark since the 1970s in a range of roles, from Director of Essex County Housing and Community Development Division to trustee for The Newark Museum.

When NJPAC received a $20 million gift from the Cooperman family to underwrite the building of new community center on its campus, the Arts Center turned to Ubarry to organize a conversation with stakeholders across all five of the city’s wards—and to organize a

“listening tour” of the city for Arts Center staff. The goal: To get input from as many of the city’s residents as possible about what features would make the new Center useful to the greatest number of people. “As a community development practitioner, I’m a big proponent of asking, ‘How do we create more equity?’ Historically, large urban centers tend to focus on the downtown, rather than the neighborhoods.

From September through the end of the year, Ubarry hosted dozens of meetings and focus groups—sometimes piggybacking on the meetings of community organizations—and spoke to approximately 1,000 Newark residents to see what insight they could offer into how the Cooperman Family Center could be most useful to the greatest number of residents.

In addition, she held one-on-one meetings with thought-leaders and influencers around the city to talk about community development, and traveled to other “One of the things I Newark organizations love about this project “...we’re trying to to start workshopping is we’re trying to break break barriers, and potential partnerships. those barriers, and use this process as a And for those who use this process as a catalyst to engage could not meet in catalyst to engage NJPAC’s neighbors.” person, she created NJPAC’s neighbors. So – Grizel Ubarry an online survey we can show them that for Newarkers to they belong in this new complete, detailing their hopes renaissance age of Newark, for the new center. and they can participate in what art brings to a community,” she says. “We’re not doing this alone,” Ubarry says, noting the goal is to have the Cooperman Center open and offering (continued on next page) 11

programming seven days a week. Partnerships with other organizations will be critical in meeting that goal, Ubarry says. NJPAC had already declared its plans for the Cooperman Center to offer arts classes for kids, including parent-and-child classes for the littlest children, and space for local performing arts groups to rehearse and perform. But asking Newarkers what they’d like to see at the arts center brought in a host of new suggestions. Among them were calls for training for off-stage careers in the arts, like lighting and costume design, designed for both children and adults; programming for seniors; workshops on life skills from financial literacy to proper etiquette; wellness activities like dance for health and yoga classes; and programming for children on the autism spectrum. (“I heard ‘I need a break’ from a lot of those parents,” Ubarry recalls.)

Events that acknowledged the culture and contributions of African American and Latinx Newarkers were widely called for, Ubarry says. “The need for there to be a sense of belonging for everyone, the importance of that, came up a lot,” says Ubarry. Now that Ubarry has cast as wide a net as possible to solicit feedback from NJPAC’s Newark neighbors, the Arts Center will start on the next step in the process: Evaluating which ideas for programming and amenities at the Cooperman Center will offer the most benefit to the greatest number—and coming up with a design for the new building that can facilitate those key attributes. “It will be a process of prioritizing,” says Ubarry, “but in the end, we hope to come up with a place that’s going to have a transformative effect on Newark.” •

Sherria Paris, a fourth-grader in the New Community Corp after-school program, drew what she’d like to see in the Cooperman Center.

‘Going for the top’ Anne Evans Estabrook spent her career breaking new ground in commercial real estate

Anne Evans Estabrook

For Anne Evans Estabrook—mother of three, universally acknowledged dean of New Jersey’s commercial real estate market, owner and chairman of Elberon Development Group, the first female chairman of the New Jersey State Chamber of Commerce, and a longtime member of NJPAC’s Board of Directors—getting to the top of her profession was not easy. But when she talks about her long career, the unmistakable impression she leaves you with is that she absolutely relished the fight.

Take, for example, the story of how she got her MBA. Her father, David O. Evans, started the family’s New Jersey construction firm in the 1920s, buying up land and building residential homes. From the time she was 16— “because that’s when you could get a work permit,” she remembers—she worked summers at Elberon’s offices, doing secretarial jobs. As the eldest child in the family, she always knew she would take over the family business. (“My father (continued on next page) 21

had no sons and he wanted me in the business, so it wasn’t really a discussion.”) After graduating high school, she went to Cornell, where she studied industrial and labor relations. It was the 1960s; Estabrook was one of three women in her graduating class. But she decided that Cornell’s accelerated MBA program—which could be combined with a BS, yielding two degrees in only five years—would be even better for her career. Just one problem: Her pragmatic father didn’t see the point of a graduate degree. “He said, ‘We’ll have no professional students in this family. Time to come home and get to work.’” she recalls. “My father was very successful, but he had a fifth-grade education. This whole idea was foreign to him. But I called him up the next weekend and said ‘I’ve been thinking about it some more and I’d like to apply.’ He said ‘You can apply, but you’re not going.’ I called him again the next Sunday and said: ‘I think with my grades I could get in.’ So you see, this is one of the ways I learned negotiating skills!” While she wore down her father’s resistance to the idea of grad school with strategic weekly chats, she also faced skepticism from the admissions office at Cornell. The dean of the business school interviewed her himself, and after the usual queries, he added one more: ‘“Now, nobody could get away with this question today. But he said, ‘Doesn’t a pretty young girl like you want to get married and have children?’ ‘Yes,’ I replied. He said, ‘Well,

how are you going to do that?’ I said, ‘My men friends do it all the time, why can’t I?’ And I was accepted.” It took a few more weeks to convince her father, but in the end, Estabrook went—putting in 60-hour weeks for two years to finish two degrees simultaneously, and graduating with honors. “And guess who showed up, and very proud of the whole honors thing too, at my graduation?” she laughs. (Her father, of course.) In recognition of her remarkable career as a businesswoman and the many years that she’s devoted her hard-won business acumen to the work of growing the Arts Center, NJPAC will this Spring establish the Anne Evans Estabrook Award for Emerging Women Leaders. The award will be presented annually to three businesswomen in leadership positions in their fields. Anne will lead a panel devoted to selecting the honorees. She hopes the award will do for rising women entrepreneurs what her earliest round of awards and accolades did for her: Open doors across the industry, and serve as recognition that “a woman can do this, too.” Although if you ever had any doubt of that, a quick look at her career should set you straight. With her MBA in hand, Estabrook went on to work at her father’s side starting in 1966. David Evans had by that time begun to move into commercial real estate, constructing enormous warehouses for Kraft Foods, Wakefern and GM around the

Elizabeth port. With Anne on board, Elberon grew into a powerhouse in industrial real estate. Her degrees— with their thorough grounding in skills like labor negotiations and organizational behavior—helped enormously. “If you can understand what the other people on your team are thinking, and why they’re thinking it, you’ll be much more successful than if you’re just up there barking orders. It’s all about working with people, she says. And throughout her career, she also became used to being the only woman at every meeting. It didn’t really bother her. “I was the token! That’s just the way it was,” she says. “I had wonderful male mentors along the way. I have tried in turn to mentor both young women and men as part of what I do today.” “She’s been breaking glass ceilings everywhere she saw them,” says Tim Lizura, NJPAC’s Senior Vice President of Real Estate and Capital Projects, who worked with her when he ran the New Jersey Economic

Development Authority, and she sat on the statewide group’s board. He notes that she also sat on the boards of many banks and water companies, where she was often, again, the only woman in the room. Estabrook eventually took over the family firm as president and chairman. Today, Elberon owns and manages a portfolio of approximately three million square feet, much of which consists of warehouse space in Elizabeth and Newark, all easily accessible from the cities’ ports. “I really turned it into a real estate management company. I bought some buildings that were already built and we managed them, and we financed them. I learned to work with banks and I learned to work with the real estate brokers...There was no time for me to be getting on a ladder out on the construction site. That wouldn’t have worked,” she says. Over the years, she has been awarded virtually every honor available to a woman in business— (continued on next page) 23

including the NJBiz Lifetime Achievement Award, New Jersey Monthly’s Top 25 Leading Women Entrepreneurs, and a berth in the New Jersey Business Hall of Fame— and served as chair of the Board for NAIOP, the national commercial real estate development association In 2011 her son, Dave Gibbons, joined her at the company’s head, becoming president while Estabrook stayed on as chairman. This makes Elberon the rare firm to not only reach its centennial, but to stay in the same family’s hands through three generations. Just as she told that business school dean years ago, Anne did get married and have children—three of them—all the while growing her family’s firm. It wasn’t easy. But that didn’t stop her. “I had to have a lot of energy. I mean that’s just one of those practical things. There is no life beyond you get up early in the morning, you get yourself dressed, you go downstairs, you make breakfast and you get everybody off to school. Then you get in the car and you go to work. Then you come home and you fix dinner, and you help with homework, and you do it again the next day, and the next day, and the next day, and the next day, and then there’s a Saturday,” she says of her children’s early years. As exhausting as that sounds, she cherishes both the experience of parenting and of running her own company.

worked out great. I had so many men friends and mentors along the way, and I was going for the top, and that’s what I did.” Over the years, she’s also become as energetic in her philanthropic work, serving on the boards of Cornell as well as the schools her children attended, including Delbarton and Rutgers, and becoming involved in supporting Kean University, where her late husband, Kenneth Estabrook was deeply engaged. Today she’s vice chair of Wenzhou-Kean University and was involved in building the university’s campus in China from the ground up. (“Over there, there is no such thing as a planning board. Now that’s probably not a good thing, but it certainly does make it easier to get things done fast,” she notes.) Ten years ago, she joined NJPAC’s Board of Directors and immediately became involved in the Arts Center’s work of redeveloping its campus. Today she’s the Co-Chair of the NJPAC Theater Square Development Company Board of Managers, which oversees its real estate projects. She’s bullish on Newark’s real estate market. “There are lots of opportunities in Newark to move forward, and NJPAC is right in the sweet spot to be a mover of that with the real estate that we own and that we’re going to redevelop,” she says. “There’s so much opportunity to go forward. The trick is going to be deciding which opportunities to tackle first. It’s a really exciting time to be pushing things forward in Newark.” •

“I mean, I’m happy that I had to do it. It wasn’t optional. But I did it and it FOR A FULL SCHEDULE OF EVENTS, VISIT NJPAC.ORG OR CALL 1.888.GO.NJPAC
