Hello Spring!

ready to say “hello” to spring! With March comes the promise of warmer days, beautiful blooms, and all of its delightful wonders. To celebrate this glorious season, we’ve turned up our excitement with an extra special Lifestyle issue full of fabulous favorites like pizza, travel adventures, Porsches, and guitars — something for everyone in every corner!

In this edition, we meet up with Mike Hauke from Tony Boloney’s to get some insight into their creative offerings. I also had the chance to catch up with this Margate local at Tomatoes Lot last summer where I really enjoyed his pizza. Mike does an amazing job of creating great food in a creative way. It’s a must try if you have not already visited one of his locations.

I’m currently in the midst of planning a trip to Tokyo, Japan this summer, so I had to include a feature on this amazing city and the culture that creates it. Tokyo is a city for foodies with more Michelin Stars than any other city in the world. Check out this quick read from Molly Golubcow, and stay tuned for some of my picks on special points of interest online at NJLifestyleMag.com.

And what better way to welcome springtime than in a Porsche! This season, feel the wind whip through your hair as you cruise around town in the 718 Boxter. It’s their entry-level convertible that never fails to impress — and with each passing year it gets even more extravagant and sophisticated. Who knows what surprises are coming down the line? Keep your eyes out for an electric option soon!

If you enjoy wine, be sure to read Michael Bray’s feature on Rosé. Every spring this blush wine comes to mind, reminding us that the season is changing, and to lighten things up a bit while switching course from our winter cocktails that got us through the colder months.

As you know, we love to bring you the best-in-class products and services. With that, we would like to welcome our new advertiser’s Bay Atlantic Symphony, Noyes Museum, Sunset Outpost, Be Green All Pro Landscaping, and Good Dog, who is coming to Atlantic City in the spring. We will begin posting some features online for these new additions so stay tuned at NJLifestyleMag.com where we’ll share more information about each of them.

As a guitar player myself, I’m personally looking forward to seeing Junhong Kuang, a classical guitar prodigy who started training at 9 years old. The Bay Atlantic Symphony will be hosting him in March.

Enjoy our Spring Issue while enjoying the spring season and the changes it brings in both weather and state of mind.

SPRINGING INTO NEW STYLES

From fringe and bold prints to pastel colors and rompers, these styles will have you looking good no matter where your day takes you. So ditch the heavy coats and get ready to enjoy all that spring has to offer — just don’t forget your sunglasses!

Welove spring in New Jersey, that is, when we aren’t experiencing whiplash from the near constant weather changes we might experience during a springtime day at the shore. After all, a spring day in New Jersey can feel like anything from a windy day in Chicago to a glorious afternoon on the beach — all in one 24-hour period. So, while we may want to ditch our heavy coats and head straight for strappy sandals and beachy florals, fashion in spring is more about lightening up our palettes and finding practical ways to keep warm while looking cool.

New Jersey Lifestyle Magazine spoke with two of the area’s most popular boutiques — Talk of the Walk, with locations in Atlantic City and Stone Harbor, and Briana Central Square in Linwood — about trends and styles you’ll want to spring into this season.

Outerwear & Sweaters

This is no time to ditch our outerwear. Instead, it’s time to transition to lightweight jackets and — just in time for April’s showers — fun and fabulous raincoats. At Talk of the Walk, there is an enormous selection of lightweight outerwear, including reversible raincoats with whimsical and bold prints.

And while we might think about leaving our sweaters at home, think again. Instead, choose light cotton sweaters in some of this spring’s favorite colors — naturals as well as joyous and playful brights. At Briana, expect to see lightweight sweaters — perfect for layering on colder days — from 27 Miles Malibu and Line.

Color, Color, and More Color

The answer to drab and dreary days of February? Color. Expect it to come at you in everything from neons and optimistic brights to playful prints with dashes of pink, New Jersey’s most popular color according to a study by Pixlr.com.

“The colors are exciting,” says

Look for elements of pink in tops and light spring jackets at Talk of the Walk, along with bold and bright tops by Cami NYC, Line, and Velvet at Briana.

“I look forward to all of the bright colors that come in this time of year which really brightens up the store and, of course, your wardrobe,” says Briana Giannone, Co-owner of Briana Central Square.

Dresses

Nothing says spring like a fun and flirty flock — or romper — that can be dressed up or down with a statement piece of jewelry. At Briana, we are loving simple dresses and rompers from Katina Grimaldi, Show Me Your Mumu, Nation LTD and Cami NYC paired with necklaces or earrings from Luv AJ Jewelry.

Over at Talk of the Walk, you can’t miss with a pocketed, yet posh, ¾ length dress paired with a statement piece from Jeff Lieb.

Tops

“We’re seeing a lot of cut outs, color blocking, crochet and embroidery,” says McCarty of spring tops.

At Talk of the Walk, there’s an enormous selection of tops — all hand-selected — available for customers. Guests can expect plenty of texture and embellishments like pearl buttons and fringe.

And while adornments and statement pieces reign supreme at Talk of the Walk, linen and poplin button downs are front and center at Briana.

“They will be a huge trend for this spring season,” says Giannone. “Fun pops of color or a clean crisp white button down go great with any of our Paige Denim for the perfect casual outfit.”

Additionally, knit and crocheted tops — as well as

Spring Vacation

While it may be a little too early to wear some of our spring favorites prior to May, they are absolutely perfect for your tropical spring

vacation. Whether it’s the Bahamas or Mexico, Florida or a Caribbean cruise, you’ll find a reason to deck yourself out in spring and summer matching sets available in linen, gauze, or poplin by Stateside and LNA. The pajama-like sets are a perfect mixture of beachy comfort and casual class.

“Whether it’s your classic black or a cute pop of color, these matching sets are so easy and fun for Spring & Summer,” says Giannone. n

SHINING BRIGHT

Gold hardware is one of the hottest trends in home and design

When it comes to trends in home design, there’s not much shining brighter than gold. “Gold finishes in hardware have been surging in popularity for the past few years and shows no signs of slowing. We’re even starting to see this trend expand to door hardware and lighting,” says Pat McCarthy, owner of Artistic Hardware, a premier hardware, lighting, and home fixture store in Northfield.

To find out what this trend is all about, New Jersey Lifestyle Magazine spoke to two experts; Pat McCarthy, Artistic Hardware, and Eric Millstein, global real estate advisor at Solei Sotheby’s International Realty, specializing in luxury shore properties.

How popular is the gold hardware trend?

Millstein: This trend is certainly growing. More and more homeowners and contractors are replacing the classic

chrome hardware with a shiny finished gold knob or bar. Gold hardware is very versatile as well. It pairs well with everything from classic white cabinets and Carrara quartz to earthy-toned granite countertops and a cherry wood cabinet.

McCarthy: Gold is extremely popular right now, especially the muted tones. There’s a little polished that’s starting to show up, but it’s definitely the muted tones that are trending. They compliment almost everything and add a bit of warmth to the décor.

Is it here to stay?

Millstein: Just like any home trend, eventually it will be replaced with something new. Maybe people will get tired of polishing and cleaning hardware and soon we will have touchless drawers. The possibilities are endless when it comes to home functionality trends.

McCarthy: I think gold hardware will be here for a while. However, even if it does fade it will eventually come back. Everything in design is cyclical.

Can you mix hardware?

Millstein: I haven’t seen many homes mix hardware finishes, but I have seen various styles in kitchens and bathrooms. In some waterfront homes, I’ve seen seashell knobs on cutlery drawers but then a classic rectangular bar for larger, deeper drawers.

McCarthy: We’re starting to see a little bit of mixed finishes showing in some of the companies we carry. Nothing like the 90’s or early 2000’s trend of chrome and polished brass. However, brushed nickel and brushed brass look nice together as do gold and black. So yes, you can mix finishes, as long as they complement each other. Just be careful.

How can you incorporate this trend into your home?

McCarthy: Hardware is one of the easiest ways to incorporate décor trends. It’s easy to do, low risk, but has a big impact. Changing out the handles or pulls on your kitchen cabinets or a piece of furniture is easy and relatively inexpensive, but it can change the whole look of your space. Great hardware can be the focal point of a room. If you’re unsure about going gold, grab a sample and bring it into your space. One of the lines we carry, Top Knobs, has a whole sample program.

Do home buyers want gold hardware?

Millstein: Every buyer is different. Depending on what type of property they are looking for, some enjoy the gold touches in a more modern kitchen and some don’t. With the

“all white” kitchen trend that has been circling the country, many buyers don’t mind it. Gold hardware can definitely add a warm metallic tone that maybe compliments large pendant lighting or an appliance.

Whetheryou are a hard-core competitor or a casual race participant, there is something about being with a group of people striving for the same goal that gives all of us that extra burst of energy. I would not consider myself a runner, but I have participated in several 5k and 10k events over the years. The atmosphere is usually festive and fun, with music, entertainment and activities, especially if there are shorter runs or walks for kids. I have met locals and visitors of all ages and levels, and almost everyone has been upbeat and jovial. Some are serious athletes trying to beat their personal best time, and others are similar to me, just happy to be there participating with the group. From fun runs to triathlons and swim competitions, the South Jersey area offers a myriad of events throughout the year. DelMoSports has produced many of these races. They are an elite production company specializing in world class events in Philadelphia and the Jersey shore. Their award-winning events include IRONMAN 70.3 Atlantic City, Escape the Cape Triathlon, the Women’s Philadelphia Triathlon, MudHen Brewing Co. Race Series, Red Bull Surf & Rescue, the Atlantic City Triathlon, Tri the Wildwoods Triathlon, and the Crest Best Run Fest. They are an award-winning company recognized for premiere productions and community involvement.

DelMoSports, celebrating 20 years in business, focuses on events with challenging courses, spectacular scenery and amazing vacation opportunities for athletes and their families. They have more than 13,000 finishers annually. Many participants travel from around the world and compete at every level, from beginner to elite. The Race Series strives to offer events that allow participants of all skill levels to participate and accomplish their personal goals. The Atlantic City Marathon Race Series provides sponsors and the local community highly effective exposure throughout the year to help maximize their presence and support the community.

Annual events such as Seashore Gardens 5K Run & Walk benefits Alzheimer’s Outreach. This year it will be held on April 16th on the Atlantic City Boardwalk, starting and finishing at Stockton University’s Atlantic City Campus at Albany Ave. and the Boardwalk. The 5K Run will begin at 9 a.m. with timing provided by JB Sports Timing. The Health Walk is a nontimed version of the same route and will follow as soon as the run has begun.

If you have ever participated in a swim or run event, you have probably felt that special vibe unique to a group race event. While it is a competition, there is an atmosphere of camaraderie, togetherness and excitement. Competitors of all levels, shapes, sizes and ages come together for that moment in time to reach a common goal — get to the finish line. “Grips like hell, handles like heaven, steers like the Almighty designed the steering rack,” Drew Dorian declared in Car and Driver.

“It is one of the most exciting and best-handling cars to drive,” Michael Butler wrote for Carbuzz.

“Just the way it changes direction, responding to steering inputs with an immediacy that has to be felt to be fully appreciated, is so much a part of this sports car’s appeal,” Colin Ryan wrote for Kelley Blue Book.

“This well-honed sports car is a delight to drive,” Consumer Reports said in its review. “Handling is superlative, with impressive grip and balance, which makes the car super-responsive and fun to drive.”

The car these experts are raving about is the Porsche 718 Boxter. Introduced in 1996, the Boxter is now in its fourth generation. It is so popular, that Porsche’s assembly plant in Stuttgart, Germany couldn’t keep up with demand, and had to move some production to a Volkswagen plant in Osnabrück.

The name “Boxter” is a hybrid, recognizing the fact that its engine is box-shaped and that it is a true roadster. It is one of several models in Porsche’s 718 series, which also includes the Cayman coupe and the Spyder.

True sports-car enthusiasts will be happy to know that six-speed manual transmission is standard. Sevenspeed automatic transmission — which reviewers say works quite well — is available for an extra $3,210. All versions are rear-wheel drive and require premium gasoline.

Of course, such a perfect contraption comes with a couple of drawbacks.

First, this car has almost no practical value. It is a two-seat convertible with minimal storage space. So the Boxter is useless as a family car or for long road trips. Its sole purpose seems to be the thrill of driving it.

Second, it sets you back a pretty penny. The base model starts at $65,500. Upgrades and options could drive the cost into six figures.

But if you’re child-free or the kiddos have grown up and flown the nest, this may well be the car of your dreams.

The Boxter comes in four trim levels. The base has a 2.0-liter Turbo Flat four-cylinder engine with 300 horsepower, a top speed of 170 mph, and taking 4.9 seconds to reach 60 mph from a standstill.

The Boxter T starts at $74,600 and has the same

engine, but with some added oomph.

The Boxter S starts at $77,500 and comes with a 2.5-liter Turbo Flat engine with 350 horsepower and taking about four seconds to go from zero to 60 mph.

At the top of the line is the Boxter GTS 4.0, starting at $92,400 and with a 4.0-liter, six-cylinder engine with 394 horsepower and going from zero to 60 in just 3.4 seconds. But these babies are reportedly quite rare, so good luck getting your mitts on one.

The engine is placed in the middle of the car, underneath the seats, part of the reason for its excellent handling. That leaves two storage compartments, 5.2 cubic feet in the front — or “frunk” as some call it — and 4.4 cubic feet in the rear. That’s still paltry, but enough to carry some

groceries or a couple of carry-on suitcases.

The Boxter infotainment system comes with a 4.6-inch touch screen equipped with Porsche Car Connect. It is compatible with Apple CarPlay, but not with Android Auto. Some reviewers say it takes some practice to make full use of the features.

The top can be raised or lowered in about 10 seconds, and can be accomplished while the car is moving up to 43 mph.

So now the major question is which Boxter to buy.

If you’re on something of a budget, Car and Driver’s Dorian suggest the Boxter S, limiting options to ventilated seats, the lowered suspension, and a limited-slip differential. The manual transmission

is a must — unless you can’t drive a stick shift.

If money is no object, Dorian suggests springing for the GTS model “with its powerful and sexy-sounding flat-six.”

Butler of Carbuzz agrees.

“The more expensive GTS version is simply worlds apart from anything the rest of the market can offer,” Butler wrote. “What we like about the 718 Boxter is that it doesn’t try to hide anything; what you see is what you get, and what you get is one of the best sports cars ever built.”

The interior is not as luxurious as one might expect in this price range. Car and Driver noted more plastic than there should be and flimsy popout cup holders aren’t very utilitarian — at least for Americans who like

to sip on a beverage when they drive.

Fuel economy is not bad for a sports car. This year’s model hasn’t been rated yet. The Environmental Protection Agency estimated the 2022 base model gets 21 mpg in town and 26 mpg on the highway, slightly higher with automatic transmission. Mileage goes down a bit as you move up the trim lines. Car and Driver got somewhat better results in its test drives.

But if you want the ultimate in energy efficiency, wait a couple more years. Porsche is planning to introduce an electric 718 Boxter in 2025.

However you choose to go, the Boxter — to use sister company VW’s slogan — is 100% pure Fahrvergnügen (driving enjoyment). n

THE PEARL OF JAPAN

Strands of pearls have adorned the necks of women for centuries. From Marie Antoinette to Princess Diana to Rihanna, these rare and beautiful “gems” represent all that is intricate and timeless. Japan produces some of the most sought-after cultured pearls in the world. And similar to the pearls it produces, in the center of Japan lies its shining pearl — mysterious, exotic, and enticing Tokyo.

Serving as the capital of Japan, Tokyo combines ancient history, culture, and temples with ultramodern city life and architectural structures that George Jetson would admire. If you decide to visit The Land of the Rising Sun, Tokyo will intrigue you from geishas robed in elaborate silk kimonos to cherry blossom wonderlands, and much more.

Sightseeing (観光 kanko)

Located in the ultra-modern Shiodome area, the 819-foot-tall Tokyo Tower is a perfect place to get a birds-eye-view of the city. The orange and white Eiffel Tower look-alike is hard to miss. Take the elevator up to the Special Observatory level and get ready to take a slew of panoramic shots.

Going from the modern to the ancient, the Senso-ji is a must. As the site of Tokyo’s oldest Buddhist temple, the area is one of the major draws of Tokyo’s Old City. Although the original temple was destroyed, the current structure was rebuilt in 1958. Between Senso-ji and the Meiji Shrine, over 1.3 million visitors a year walk the temple grounds.

Tokyo Tip #1 — Sumo wrestling, the national sport of Japan, takes place every day, three times a day at the Ryogoku Kokugikan arena in Tokyo. Nearby is the Sumo Museum — a wrestling fan’s delight.

Natural Wonders (自然 — shizen) Ueno Park is one of Japan’s most popular city parks. Located there,

you will find several of the city’s major museums like the Tokyo National Museum. During the Spring season, Ueno Park is visited by millions of tourists who come to practice hanami — the revered custom of enjoying and viewing acres of Japan’s renowned cherry blossoms.

Looking for a day trip outside the city? The iconic snow-capped Mount Fuji, located about 60 miles outside of Tokyo, is an excursion to add to your vacation list.

On a clear day, the sites of the mountain and lakes are breathtaking. In addition to natural beauty, you will also find shrines, torii gates, and souvenir shops, of course.

Tokyo Tip #2 — From central Tokyo, take the subway to the Omotesando Trail at Mount Takao — a fairly easy trek where you will see a beautiful Buddhist temple as well as monkeys at Monkey Park.

Food (食べ物 — tabemono)

There are almost 14 million people living in Tokyo, and there may be just as many sushi options! Yes, an exaggeration, but Tokyo offers sushi everywhere for every wallet and palette. For example, sushi connoisseurs may want to try highend restaurants touting well-known chefs. If you want a more casual meal, try conveyor-belt shops (sushi delivered to your seat mechanically), standing-only joints, and a myriad of street vendors located all over the city.

The Chaîne des Rôtisseurs invites all lovers of gastronomy, good food and fine wines to share its values of excellence and camaraderie, uniting us in the continuation of great culinary traditions. Join the Atlantic City Bailliage!

Another Tokyo culinary option is noodle-based dishes. For example, Soba buckwheat noodles can be prepared hot or cold and are usually eaten with a soya-based dipping sauce (tsuyu). Other noodle dishes include Ramen served in a meat or fish-based broth and Kake Udon — a noodle soup topped with scallions or prawns.

GETTING TO KNOW ROSÉ

What goes into this fruity flavored wine.

What is Rosé Wine?

Rosé wine is a wine that uses some of the skins of red grape varieties, but doesn’t make contact long enough to extract tannins or deeper red color. The resulting wine is pink in color, and is essentially made in the style of white wine, but using red grapes. Pink hues can range anywhere from a pale orange to a translucent ruby, and offers an enormous spectrum of fruity flavors.

How is it made?

If the winemaker’s focus is to make Rosé wine, then controlled skin contact is the typical way to go. After crushing red grapes, the juice will sit with the grape skins on top anywhere from two to 24 hours. The longer the skin makes contact, the deeper the color. If the winemaker needs to make multiple styles of wine, then the saignee method is a great way to make Rosé. Saignee is French for “bleed”, meaning that after a period of skin contact, the winemaker will drain off a portion of the pink juice to be fermented in a stainless-steel vat, while the remaining juice continues to extract tannins and color to make a powerful, highly-structured red wine. Another way to make Rosé is by directly pressing red grapes and taking whatever color leaches out into the juice; these wines tend to be paler, with more white wine flavors like citrus and peaches, rather than red berries and watermelon that you would get from skin contact. Blending red wine with white wine is typically discouraged, though it is legal to do in Champagne. That being said, Champagne producers tend to stick with saignee or direct pressing methods of making sparkling Rosé.

Is Rosé wine dry or sweet?

Some producers may note a “semi-dry,” “semi-sweet,” or “sweet” to indicate varying levels of residual sugar in the wine, but the overwhelming majority of Rosé wines are going to be dry and very food-friendly. However, there are some styles that tend to be on the sweeter side. White Zinfandel from California, for instance is always going to have a degree of sweetness and is almost never dry. Rosé d’Anjou from the Loire Valley is a specialty made from Cabernet Franc that is low in alcohol with a touch of sweetness to balance the high acids. Speaking of alcohol levels, if you look at the ABV and see a number less than 11%, chances are high that you will have a Rosé with residual sugar. A great example of this is the Brachetto sparkling wines, which are typically around 7% ABV, but have high amounts of residual sugar (a perfect dessert wine!).

Why don’t you see expensive Rosé?

The truth is, Rosé is an easy wine to make. Crush the grapes, let the juice and skins sit together for a short time, drain, ferment, and bottle. It is a fresh, lively wine that should be consumed within a year (two years, tops). There are no oak treatments, which typically adds cost to production. There is also no need to hold the wine in bottle to settle down and harmonize, so a winemaker’s inventory turns over quickly (another cost associated with wine production). There are so many good bottles of Rosé to try for $20 and under. If you are looking to see what the buzz is about when it comes to some of the celebrity bottlings, by all means go ahead...those might take you into the $30 bracket. The Tavel region of the Rhone Valley specializes in Rosé production, and has been doing it for a very long time. The quality has earned such critical acclaim that these wines may go $40 and up, but this is an exception to the rule.

Does location matter?

Always! Worldwide wine regions will typically work with the grapes that work in their respective terroirs, but also use grapes that maximize fruitiness, acidity, or both. Garnacha is Spain’s luxurious variety, which offers texture and strawberry fruit. Italian Rosé made from Sangiovese tends to be pale orange with a citrusy character. Pinot Noir Rosé from Oregon will give you bold cherry fruit flavors, while Provence Rosé made from a blend of grapes will be delicate and mineralladen, with watermelon and nectarines, straddling a line of white and red wine flavors with grace. South American Rosés can sometimes have a touch of smoke to complement the aromatic red fruit flavors.

What I’m drinking?

Proprieta Sperino Rosé (from Piedmont, Italy), Domaine Olga Raffault Rosé (from Loire Valley, France) and Arnot Roberts Rosé (from California).

Thirsty yet!?

Drink Passionately,

ART AND CLIMATE

Today’s artists continue the battle of Mother Nature vs. Human Nature involving the inequity of climate resilience.

Artists provide an environment to exchange ideas, viewpoints, and those special topics, which can often be very contentious. The debate on climate change, man versus nature, is not a new topic in the art world. In the late 1800’s, artists such as Thomas Cole from the Hudson River School were known as one of the first environmental artists.

His paintings represented the sublime grandeur of the American landscape as it was being destroyed by economic development.

Today, artists continue the battle. Bryan Gorski, an artist from Long Branch, New Jersey, often reflects on Edward Hopper‘s quote, “Great art is the outward expression of an inner life in the artist.” This reminds him that “great art can stem from the ambiguity and mysterious functions of the inner subconscious.” Art that sets a

stage with a strong perspective can provide a catalyst for change that has the potential to make the greatest impact. Bryan’s choice of oil painting allows him to fulfill a need to make his thoughts and visions permanent, but rendered in a loose and painterly application. Bryan says, “The places and ideas of his paintings are consistent and coherent as a body of work in that they share pieces of his own aesthetic criteria, subconscious on canvas, and love of landscapes.” Bryan’s references to the connections and thoughts within the environment may be small or broad, but these references look for meaningful introspection of our place(s) and how we affect it.

The digital montage, Stone Goddess #19 (Wildfires) by South Orange, NJ, artist Kay Kenny sends a powerful message. In these years of trouble times, Kay kept reflecting upon the ancient Greeks and Romans — their culture and the fragility of democracy. He photographed the Greek and Roman statues in the Metropolitan Museum’s sculpture courts and placed them in photographs that he has taken in various locations throughout the USA. “The goddesses are avatars from the past, silently watching our descent into polarizing oligarchies as the earth’s climate is made vulnerable to our whims,” says Kay.

“I chose to show the consequences of climate change in my mixed media painting. If we keep going the way we are, it will bring unpredictable weather, forest fires, hotter unbearable temperatures, hurricanes, and floods,” says Bayonne, NJ artist

Kristen Martin-Aarnio. As witnesses from around the globe, all this change comes from a scarcity of resources. You don’t have to travel far to see lack of water, rising sea levels, and displacement, eventually leading to people fighting wars over resources. Kristen feels that mother nature will prevail, but humans will not if we keep abusing a livable system.

Art is more than aesthetics; it is about visual storytelling. Artist Beatrice Stenta, from North Wildwood, NJ, is a mix media artist who composes stories about the environment, the political world, despair, and hope. Her process begins with citrus solvent-soaked National Geographic pages. The ink breaks down and blurs the image in this long saturation process, forming a mystical and worldly atmosphere. By adding charcoal, pencil marks, textured paper, acrylics, and cold wax and oils

layered over the top, Beatrice creates stimulating patterns and depth. Her muses come from the ocean view from her home as well as “news articles and memory fragments of the past and present.”

If you’re looking for a typical pizza topped with red sauce and a dollop of mozzarella, stay away from Tony Boloney’s. Seriously, no joke! This joint ain’t for people who color between the lines. Whether in Atlantic City or at one of the North Jersey locations, Tony Boloney products are bold and

His name is Mike Hauke — the brains, guts, and superhero of fast food in the Garden State. For example, when he decided to start making pizzas, he quickly realized that roasting

New Jersey Lifestyle luckily caught up with Mike — not an easy thing to do. Between shuttling between locations in AC, Jersey City, Hoboken, Long Branch, and making numerous television appearances from Kelly Ripa to Anderson Cooper, this guy is a Jersey treasure. You may see him mince garlic, but never his words. Please meet Tony Boloney’s founder, Mike Hauke:

NJL: How did the Tony Boloney concept happen?

MH: It all started when my father tried getting me to buy a piece of real estate in the Atlantic City Inlet in the early 2000s when they were proposing to build the MGM Casino. His pitch to me was can buy this building and outfit it for a convenience store or bodega, and then rent it out. Well, we outfitted it and no one wanted to rent it, so we decided to open up our own Bodega/Convenience store and ended up selling frozen s*** to construction workers building the neighboring Revel Casino.

NJL: What is Tony Boloney’s philosophy?

MH: My mantra has really always been if I can buy it, I can probably make it, and I’m going to make and cook what I like to eat. Our menu is an effective mix of crazy s*** and that’s exactly how we like it. The comment we get a lot of times is hey how come you guys don’t have veal parmesan? What kind of self-respecting Italian place are you? My response is we are not that place. I’m 1/8 Italian, Jewish, and my favorite food is Indian food.

NJL: Where did the name, Tony Boloney, come from?

MH: Tony Boloney is an old family nickname that my greatgrandfather called my grandfather, who called my father, who then called me. Basically, it means naughty little boy. We started Tony Boloney’s as NOT a traditional Italian pizzeria. We like to flip recipes and be creative with them so we’re almost being naughty, fun, and creative in an otherwise mostly static and mundane pizza industry.

NJL: How do you come up with the pizza names?

MH: The pizza names just come to me organically. A lot of the names emanate from historic Atlantic City (CASINO CARNIVORE®) and some of them are just fun plays on the menu items themselves

(Mexican Corn Husker), but they all have a story.

NJL: Do you customize your options for each location?

MH: We keep the pizza our core menu the same for all of our stores in Atlantic City, Hoboken, Jersey City, and Long Branch. We also have a food truck, a Farmers Market business, Tony’s Farm to Table (artisans craft the products), and a pop up in the summer at Tomatoes restaurant in Margate, NJ Lil B’s, named after my son, Greyson. Although all the stores keep the same core menu, each has a few items specific to that location.

Whether it’s our French Onion Soup Pizza or our Jewish Cowboy Passover Brisket Pizza, we make all of our ingredients in house from scratch.

pizzas. I’ve never pilfered anything from anyone else’s menu, and whether it’s our French Onion Soup Pizza or our Jewish Cowboy Passover Brisket Pizza, we make all of our ingredients in house from scratch. Our dough is made by a slow cold natural fermentation, our sauces are all made in house with local ingredients when available, and our cheese is made in our mozzarella factory in Atlantic City. For us, our business model is just a little different. I’ve never worked in a restaurant; I have no culinary experience other than getting really drunk and high in college and making crazy concoctions with ramen noodles in my dormitory.

NJL: What do you consider your most popular product (non-pizza)?

MH: Our subs — 100%. When someone comes in and tells me they’ve driven six hours just to eat our Boloney Rex sub — meat pulled off a 13-in bone nestled in between freshly baked Atlantic City bread, our caveman sauce, and smoked cheese whiz, they deserve some free TB swag. Our Cheese Steak Ole won Best of New Jersey from The Star-Ledger three years now, and we have been on hundreds of shows and magazines featuring our subs.

NJL: Can you share the secret to Tony Boloney’s success?

MH: Do whatever you are doing honestly. Like if you are a CPA, but embezzle money from clients...not good. So, if you are a pizzeria and put s***ty ingredients on pizza....

NJL: What’s next for Tony Boloney’s?

MH: Stay Tuned! n

REQUIRED MINIMUM DISTRIBUTIONS

The SECURE Act 2.0 Changes up Rules

Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs) need to be taken from retirement accounts at a certain age whether you need the money for retirement expenses or not. The government forces you to take these distributions to create taxable income on money that was never taxed (potentially for decades). Changes were recently made to how these distributions will be handled going forward. President Biden signed into law the SECURE 2.0 Act of 2022 on December 29, 2022. This legislation made few key changes to rules regarding Required Minimum Distributions.

The original SECURE act or the SECURE act of 2019 pushed the year in which RMDs need to be taken from age 70.5 up to age 72. SECURE 2.0 pushes this age out to 73 starting this year in 2023. This means that if you turn 72 in 2023, you do not have a required minimum distribution to take until 2024 when you turn age 73. Technically this first RMD you could defer until April 1st of the following year in 2025, although then you would have to take two RMDs in this year (one for 2024 and then 2025’s RMD would need to be taken by December 31st of that year). This RMD age further increases in 2033 from an age of 73 to age 75 allowing retirees to defer taxes for an even longer period. These rules apply to IRAs, including SIMPLE and SEPs but does not apply to Roth IRAs, which do not have RMDs.

SECURE 2.0 also reduced the excise tax imposed on forgetting to take a Required Minimum Distribution. Previously this was one of the harshest penalties in the Internal Revenue Code with the penalty tax of 50%. The new law reduces this penalty tax to 25%. Additionally, if you correct the mistake within two years, the penalty is further reduced to a more reasonable 10%.

A discussion of RMDs is not complete without also reviewing the current rules for how RMDs are handled for

beneficiaries and while SECURE 2.0 has not changed these rules, the original Act had a major change to how these work. Prior to the original SECURE Act, non-spousal beneficiaries could utilize something called a “stretch-IRA”. The way this worked is once a couple died, they would leave their IRA to their children who would then have something called an “inherited IRA”. The children could then take Required Minimum Distributions out over their life expectancy effectively stretching these payments out over their lifetime. The SECURE act changed this stating that the money has to be out of the children’s (or non-spousal) Inherited IRA within 10 years. This could create a challenging and expensive tax profile for the next generation who could be in their prime working years. One thing to remember is that the children would not have taxable income created if they inherited a Roth IRA instead. These still would have to be distributed within 10 years by the children once inherited, but they would be distributed to them tax-free. With Roth IRAs being a better account for the next generation to inherit, careful planning could be enacted to see if it makes sense to convert the parent’s IRA assets into the Roth during their lifetime so that less taxes are paid overall by the family. This strategy is certainly complex and is best to implement with the help of a Financial Planner and Tax Advisor who understands your situation. n
