Ying Wu College of Computing at NJIT
E
stablished in 2001, Ying Wu College of Computing (YWCC) was one of the first colleges devoted entirely to computing in the country. Its establishment reflected NJIT’s recognition of the central role of computing
in all facets of the modern world — including science, business, design and culture. The college features small class sizes, an exceptionally broad curriculum and an array of course offerings, with degree programs in all of the
major domains of computing. The college has a renowned faculty with funded research in cybersecurity and privacy, big data, bioinformatics and other areas, providing graduate students with many opportunities to combine classroom studies with research. It has extensive ties to industry and government partners in the New York/New Jersey. area, from startups to global enterprises, which enable the development of professional connections. Students may pursue their studies full time or part time, through online and/or faceto-face instruction.
OUR GRADUATE COMPUTING PROGRAMS • Bioinformatics (M.S.) • Business and Information Systems (M.S.) • Computer Science (M.S. & Ph.D.) • Computing and Business (M.S.) • Cybersecurity and Privacy (M.S.) • Information Systems (M.S. & Ph.D.) • IT Administration and Security (M.S.) • Software Engineering
Research
Y
ing Wu College of Computing maintains an active scholarly research program that is funded through multiple federal and nonfederal sources. Research focuses on cybersecurity (including android security and advanced cryptography), big data with an emphasis on scientific data, bioinformatics and medical informatics, networking (including vehicular networking and sensor networks) and cloud computing. The importance of cybersecurity, big data and biomedical informatics research is evidenced by daily stories in the popular press, describing yet another
security breach, health data management issue or new data collection that is so big it is hard to manage and make gainful use of with current technology. Computer networks and cloud facilities provide the essential underlying infrastructure to store and move the big data. Other actively pursued research areas are machine learning, social media applications and their effects on society, information filtering
and user profiling, Semantic Web search and multimedia data retrieval. The college is also active in researching methods to improve the educational process by providing online teaching tools and materials, and by teaching through the use of computer games. All these research areas have strong practical, commercial, educational and/ or national security applications, with a direct impact on the national economy, security and workforce. The
(M.S.)
college also contributes to the professional literature about hardcore theory areas with practical applications, such as parallel algorithm design, risk management for nuclear power plants as well as investment portfolios, prediction of the spread of oil spills, etc. Another important theoretical area of research deals with scheduling.
