Research Facilities and Focus The Center for Solar Terrestrial Research is an international leader in ground-based solar physics and studies the effects of the Sun on Earth’s space and terrestrial environment. The center operates the Big Bear Solar Observatory (BBSO) and the Owens Valley Solar Array (OVSA) in California. Both the BBSO and OVSA have strong instrumentation programs in high-order adaptive optics, visible light and near infrared polarimetry, and radio imaging spectroscopy. The center is also heavily involved in several space and groundbased experimental investigations of the heliosphere, the magnetosphere and the ionosphere. The Center for Applied Mathematics and Statistics (CAMS) plays a prominent research role in CSLA, and has an outstanding track record in bringing engaging researchers from academia, industry and government to NJIT. Graduate student research is encouraged through the CAMS Summer Research Program and attendance at conferences.
Grants and Awards Somenath Mitra, distinguished professor of chemistry and environmental science, was named to the National Academy of Inventors for diverse technological innovations. Mitra has achieved global prominence for his work in several areas, including trace measurements and diverse nanotechnology applications ranging from flexible batteries to solar cells to sea-water desalination, and has been issued 11 patents. Three CSLA junior faculty received prestigious early career development awards from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to conduct research and improve student success in STEM fields. Alexei Khalizov (chemistry and environmental science) studies chemical reactions of pollutants that occur in the atmosphere. Casey Diekman (mathematical sciences) studies circadian rhythms or biological clocks. Bin Chen (physics) studies energetics of explosive solar events using a new generation of radio telescopes. Denis Blackmore, professor of mathematical sciences and NJIT faculty member since 1971, was honored by the New Jersey Section of the Mathematical Association of America (MAA-NJ) for distinguished college or university teaching of mathematics. The B.S. in Mathematical Sciences program at NJIT ranked fifth on an exclusive list of the country’s top actuarial programs following an independent study conducted by HomeInsurance.com. NJIT was the only New Jersey school cited and joins other nationally ranked colleges, including University of Notre Dame, University of Florida and Texas A&M University. The Department of Mathematical Sciences at NJIT ranks in the top 40 in research expenditures in mathematical sciences in the U.S., according to the National Science Foundation (NSF).
ADMISSIONS
STUDENT LIFE AND HOUSING
For M.S. applicants, NJIT requires a four-year undergraduate degree from an accredited program in the United States or its equivalent, and a cumulative GPA no lower than 2.8 on a 4.0 scale (individual departments may impose more stringent requirements). For Ph.D. applicants, NJIT requires an appropriate academic background as described by the individual programs, and, preferably, a GPA of at least 3.5 on a 4.0 scale in prior study.
NJIT is a diverse community committed to mutual understanding and respect for others. Our Diversity Programs Office within the Center for Student Involvement initiates and supports activities that promote cultural competency among students. Our Graduate Student Association (GSA) represents the interests of all graduate students in university affairs and offers numerous academic and social events. Students automatically become members once they are accepted into an NJIT graduate program. The NJIT campus features state-of-the-art facilities on 45 acres in the University Heights section of Newark, and is only 20 minutes from New York City, with easy access via public transportation. Our ideal location is also at the center of a powerhouse corporate corridor and burgeoning tech hub that includes over 50 Fortune 500 companies, leading financial firms, engineering firms and industry giants — all of which translates to access to and career opportunities with leaders in a variety of industries.
Admission Requirements • GRE for all full-time applicants • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) for all international students not holding a degree from a U.S. postsecondary institution. Minimum scores: Internet-based TOEFL – 79, computer-based TOEFL – 213, paper-based TOEFL – 550, IELTS – 6.5 with no sub-score lower than 6.0.
