’s Newark College of Engineering has been educating capable and creative engineers – and leaders in a wide range of fields – for almost 90 years. Nearly a third of the engineers in New Jersey hold degrees from NCE. One of the oldest and largest professional engineering schools in the United States, NCE has more than 1,100 graduate students enrolled in 20 master’s and 10 doctoral degree programs, awarding more than 400 graduate degrees a year. Programs range from the traditional engineering disciplines to emerging fields like bioelectronics, power and energy systems, and healthcare systems management.

New Jersey School of Architecture

NJSOA is the first architectural school in the country to store all student design work electronically, through the Kepler Archive, a proprietary software system developed in-house.

The custom-designed, web-based information retrieval system allows students and faculty on-line access to work produced in all NJSOA courses. The school expects this digital archiving system to become the new standard communication tool and means for recording student work at schools of architecture nationwide.

stablished in 1973 as the only publicly supported professional architecture program in New Jersey, the New Jersey School of Architecture (NJSOA) is the nation’s fifth largest school of architecture. NJSOA was one of the first schools of architecture in the nation to incorporate computerized 3-D modeling into the curriculum and the school is now recognized as a national leader in digital design. Students have access to state-of-the-art computer facilities and the most up-to-date software applications for image processing, compositing, digital editing, drafting and technical illustration and animation.

The school recently added its FABLAB, equipped with a range of computer numerically controlled (CNC) hardware — laser cutters for acrylic and heavy paper, 3D printers that build objects from layers of plaster, and a CNC Router that can mill such materials as wood, foam and metals.

The school’s location, in New Jersey’s largest city and less than 10 miles from New York City, offers students a unique opportunity to use the metropolitan area as a living laboratory to study existing architecture as well as to participate in creating solutions to infrastructure problems facing urban centers.

Nick Kintos, PhD in Mathematical Sciences

he College of Science and Liberal Arts (CSLA) is the intellectual crossroads for science, technology and human values. Graduate degree programs and research at the school are interdisciplinary in nature, exploring the challenging new frontiers where mathematics intersects with biology, or where physics and chemistry combine to delve into nanotechnology.

The college has the largest research program in the university, including an internationally acclaimed solar physics department that operates the Big Bear Solar Observatory in California. The Department of Mathematical Sciences is ranked in the top ten nationally by Academic Analytics.

The college’s research emphasizes applications and development of new technologies such as computational chemistry to develop medication for cocaine addiction; mathematical modeling of ocean acoustics to detect submarines; modeling and statistical analysis applications in ecology to help protect endangered species; and computational techniques to forecast sunspots and related phenomena that may affect aviation and telecommunications. Faculty members hold patents for MEMS sensors and microconcentrators; terahertz imaging technology; and microwave technology to change the chemical characteristics of carbon nanotubes for use in “smart” films, coatings, paints and nanocomposite materials.

Research Brief: New insights into short-term synaptic plasticity (STSP) — the ability of a synapse to change in strength based on how it is being used — is the goal of Amitabha Bose, associate professor of mathematical sciences. With NSF funding, he is developing mathematical models to chart the neuron patterns in the crustacean digestive system and in the rat hippocampus, the region of the brain believed to control spatial memory in animals. The goal is to derive a general understanding of how STSP works.

NJIT was one of the first universities to require computer science courses for students in all majors. Research Brief: Chengjun Liu, assistant professor of computer science, has developed a system that can verify a person’s identity by using facial images. His face recognition system improves on previous technology by taking into account such factors as lighting and facial expressions.The technology can be used as a security system with facial identification replacing a physical key or a password. Such a system could also assist law enforcement. Dr. Liu has grant support from the Department of Defense

Master’s Fellowship This award provides a partial tuition waiver to qualified applicants who are admitted to full-time study within a master’s degree program. International Students

All applicants who do not hold a degree from a post-secondary institution within the United States and/or who are neither a citizen of the United States nor a U.S. Permanent Resident (green card holder) must submit either the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) results (www.toefl.org) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) results (www.ielts.org). A minimum score of 79 (Internet-based TOEFL), 550 (paper-based TOEFL) or 213 (computer-based TOEFL), or 6.5 (IELTS) is required for all international applicants. The GRE (general test) is also required for all international applicants who possess an earned degree from a non-U.S. institution.
