Luciane DOM

AWARDED AN INSTITUTE OF INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION ARTIST PROTECTION FUND FELLOWSHIP AND IS IN RESIDENCE AT NEW JERSEY CITY UNIVERSITY

A singer, songwriter, and historian, who is part of the new generation of contemporary artists from Rio de Janeiro Luciane Dom brings poetic themes such as the Black diaspora, feminism, empowerment, and social reflections that impact the construction of her emotions. With a background in history, she is currently in the United States in an exchange program at New Jersey City University (NJCU) in partnership with the Institute of International Education, researching her next musical project.

With three albums released, including Liberte esse Banzo (2018), Jupiter and Urano (Onebeat 2018) and some singles, Dom brings in her sound influences: from Afrobeats, to Urban Jazz with Reggae, and Ijexá. Dom’s career goes beyond art as an expression to become a means of thinking about changes and telling stories using music and audiovisual media as a vehicle.

“I am a critical thinker and a natural observer who translates everything into music,” says Dom. The singer and creator has been firmly established in world music, positioning herself as a political and historical musical body, where her experiences and her plans materialize in the form of lyrics, songs, and texts that talk about her writings, her family background and the environment where she lived; the singer carries the crossings of black intellectuals such as Lélia Gonzales and Conceição Evaristo. In addition, the singer has shared stages and experiences with Emeline Michel, Malika Tirólien (Bokante), Vox Sambou, Liniker, Luedji Luna, and Caio Prado, among others.

She is an outstanding presence on relevant stages of the world music scene, fairs and events such as the MIMO Festival (2021) and in integrating line ups with artists such as Luedji Luna (BR) and Nouvelle Vague (Fr), Festival Mucho (2020), Faro MPB (2020), Oi Labsônica (2020), Formemus (Br, 2020), Música Mundo (Br, 2017), and at festivals such as International Music Week SIM São Paulo (2019). She is on her third U.S. tour. Previous tours include Onebeat 2018, Brazil Summerfest (2019), NJCU Salsa Orchestra, (2021)—and one tour around Chile with IMESUR and La Makinita (2019).

Angelica DE LA RIVA

SOPRANO AND NJCU FACULTY

Aaward-winning Brazilian Cuban soprano Angelica de la Riva has performed regularly in New York at Carnegie Hall, David Geffen Hall—the house of the New York Philharmonic—and Alice Tully Hall. She has also performed around the world at places such as ShenZen Concert Hall in China, and the opera houses in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, in Brazil. De la Riva has also sung in France, Italy, Dubai, and Abu Dhabi among other locations.

As a soloist, De la Riva has performed with orchestras like the St. Luke´s, the Mozarteum, the Prague Symphony, and the Brazilian Symphony Orchestra under directors like R. Boudharam, M. Kosarin, and L. Mills o E. Plasson.

Operatic highlights include Tosca, Poppea in L´Incoronaziones di Poppea, Countess in The Marriage of Figaro, and Nedda in Pagliacci. Recently De la Riva sang the Mozart Requiem, at the National Auditorium in Madrid under maestro Pascual Osa. De la Riva’s command of the stage—likely honed when she earned her acting degree and studied at law school— combined with her versatility and vocal skills give her an added edge when it comes to performing in musicals. She started her professional career with the Disney theatrical production of Beauty and the Beast, directed by Sam Scalamoni and Michael Kosarin in Brazil. Shortly after that, she performed in the role of Titania for the musical adaptation of Midsummer Nights Dream with Manhattan Ensemble Theatre (off-Broadway) with whom she also starred another Shakespeare´s musical adaptation, The Tempest. De la Riva also starred in Stephen Sondheim´s A Little Night Music at the Brooklyn Center for the Performing Arts.

De la Riva’s solid academic background also grants her the tools to take up the challenge of interpreting contemporary music. She has starred in the world premiere of The Rise and Fall of the First World opera by Michael Kowalski in New York, Cinco Poemas de Vinicius de Moraes, a symphonic poem by João Guilherme Ripper, as well as several son cycles including Festa de São João by G. Bernstein and De Amores by Amparo Fabra. Highlights as an actress at Lincoln Center include the premier of The Empty Hours by Spanish composer Ricardo Llorca.

De la Riva currently lives in Spain where she will receive the 2022 Award to Educational Excellence in Music and Culture.

She developed most of her career in New York, where she lived for 15 years and went to The Juilliard School, Brooklyn College, and Mannes School of Music. Besides her performing career, She is a proud professor of African Music in the Americas at New Jersey City University.

De la Riva, a former Brazilian rowing champion, sang the Olympic Anthem at the Opening Ceremony for the IOC Summer Olympic Games 2016 and the Brazilian National Anthem at the Olympic Awards.

César HAAS

D.M.A., EASTMAN SCHOOL OF MUSIC, UNIVERSITY OF ROCHESTER M.M. IN JAZZ PERFORMANCE, NEW JERSEY CITY UNIVERSITY B.M., UNIVERSIDADE FEDERAL DO RIO GRANDE DO SUL (BRAZIL)

Brazilian jazz guitarist, composer, educator and NJCU alumnus César Haas has shared the stage with renowned jazz artists such as Chris Byars, Alex Noris, Brian Dickinson, Fernando Huergo, Paul Meyers, Richie Vitale, among others.

With a strong background performing Brazilian popular styles and jazz, Haas is currently recording his debut album featuring original compositions based on Brazilian rhythms with renowned jazz saxophonist Bobby Militello (former member of the Dave Brubeck Quartet).

While working on his D.M.A. in Jazz Studies at Eastman School of Music, Haas taught jazz guitar and jazz theory and was awarded with the Eastman School of Music Teaching Assistant Prize 2020-2021. While in Rochester, N.Y., Haas co-lead the Ibeji Quartet, a group that performed original music and arrangements of jazz and Brazilian tunes, with media appearances and performances at the main jazz venues in upstate New York, as well as in the Rochester International Jazz Festival.

His original composition Mangabeu, freely inspired by rhythmic counterpoint of Central African music, was selected to be part of the Jazz at Eastman album.

While working on his master’s degree in jazz performance in the New York metropolitan area, along with performing with renowned jazz and Latin musicians in the NYC jazz scene in well-known venues such as Club Bonafide, Le Poisson Rouge, and Cornelia Street Café as a leader and as a sideman, he was part of the New Jersey City University Tenor Conclave Combo. The ensemble was selected to record a live session at the iconic WBGO radio studios in Newark, N.J., under the supervision of award-winner saxophonist Walt Weiskopf. Haas also participated in recording sessions with Gian Stone at Stone Recording Studios in Brooklyn, N.Y. Stone is a Grammy-nominated producer and songwriter that works with Maroon Five, Arianna Grande, and The Jonas Brothers, among others.

Haas’ current research work is to examine harmonic techniques from 20th century composer Vincent Persichetti and apply them to jazz improvisation, composition, and arrangement on the guitar. His doctoral lecture recital presentation on this topic was nominated for the Eastman Lecture Recital Prize.

In Brazil, while working on his bachelor’s degree in classical guitar at UFRGS (one of the top universities in the country), Haas was awarded a research scholarship and worked in the field of music theory, co-writing a paper that was presented at the XIX ANPPOM Congress (Brazil’s National Association for Music Research), Brazilian most important music research conference.

Haas has been performing regularly in Brazil as a leader with many appearances in newspapers, radio and TV shows, as well as a sideman, accompanying groups and singers such as Anaadi, a Latin Grammy Award 2018 winner.

Diego FERREIRA

NEW JERSEY CITY UNIVERSITY M.M. IN JAZZ PERFORMANCE (2017) M.M. IN MUSIC COMPOSITION (2020)

Brazilian saxophonist, instructor, lecturer, performer and NJCU alumnus Diego Ferreira holds a Bachelor of Music degree in Saxophone from UFRGS—Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil (2013), a master’s degree in Jazz Performance from New Jersey City University (2017)—where he studied under saxophonists Bob Malach, Walt Weiskopf and Jim Snidero—and a second Master’s in Music Composition from New Jersey City University (2020), having studied with Spanish composer Amparo Fabra.

Ferreira has participated as instructor, lecturer, and performer in the most important saxophone and instrumental music events in Brazil, such as: II ESAX— International Saxophone Congress in Brasília (2015), I Encontro Internacional de Saxofonistas—Porto Alegre (2016), III Amapá Jazz Festival—Amapá, Brazil (2011), and Festival de Música de Teutonia (2017). In the academic field, Ferreira has worked as saxophone instructor for lessons open to the community at Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul in 2009—2010 and as adjunct faculty at New Jersey City University in 2018.

Ferreira has performed with Julio “Chumbinho” Herrlein, Emilio Valdes, Ricardo Baumgarten, Kiko Freitas, Edu Martins and Orquestra de Câmara do Theatro São Pedro, Vinicius Dorin, Gastão Villeroy, Di Steffano, Bibi Ferreira, Luiz Brasil, Alan Ferber, Catherine Russell, Chris Byars, Graciliano Zambonin, Peter Slavov, Felipe Viegas, Sergio Galvão, Mauricio Zotarelli, Daniel Sá, among others. He has been featured as special guest on Brazilian bassist Ricardo Baumgarten’s album O Encontro (2010) and pianist Cristian Sperandir’s Bons Ventos (2018). Ferreira appears on a number of records such as Arquitetônicos (2015), by trumpeter Marcos Santos; The Observer (2016)

by New York based jazz fusion band Moon Sugar, and Angico (2019) by New York-based brazilian drummer Graciliano Zambonin, to name a few.

NJCU EXPERIENCE

César Haas, NJCU ’17 M.M. Aside from being internationally acclaimed and accomplished, NJCU’s faculty really get involved in their students’ learning and development process as a whole.

When I first moved to the U.S. from Brazil to work on my master’s degree in jazz at NJCU, I didn’t know anyone in the area (obviously), and it was the first time that I had traveled so far and stayed for so long away from my girlfriend, family and friends. At first it was difficult, but with the help and support of NJCU faculty, students, and the whole community, I was starting to feel more “at home.” Paul Meyers, my guitar professor at NJCU, was really helpful and important in this process. Aside from being an internationally recognized musician and an amazing educator, he gave me care and support outside the classroom environment as well, meeting with me for a coffee to talk about life and music. He gave me a good amount of advice, and even drove me to a different town to help me buy a guitar amp! Adding to all that, professor Meyers was really important to my career as a musician and as an educator, recommending my work to peers in the NYC jazz scene and in academia. With this small statement, I want to acknowledge my friend and mentor Paul Meyers and all my professors at NJCU that with their talents and incredible efforts have had such a positive impact on my life and career.

Além da qualidade e renome internacional do corpo docente da NJCU, os professores realmente se envolvem no aprendizado e no desenvolvimento dos alunos como um todo. Quando eu me mudei do Brasil para os EUA para fazer o mestrado em jazz na NJCU, eu não conhecia ninguém na região (obviamente) e era a primeira vez que eu viajava para tão longe e ficava tanto tempo distante da minha namorada, da minha família e dos meus amigos.

No início foi difícil, mas com o apoio dos professores, dos alunos e de toda a comunidade da NJCU, fui me sentindo cada dia mais “em casa”. Uma pessoa que me ajudou muito foi o Paul Meyers, meu professor de guitarra na NJCU. Além de ser um músico de renome internacional e um educador incrível, ele me deu todo o carinho e suporte fora da sala de aula também, desde um café conversando sobre música e sobre a vida, conselhos, até inclusive me dar carona para outra cidade para me ajudar a comprar um cubo de guitarra! Além de tudo, o professor Meyers foi muito importante recomendando meu trabalho e ajudando a abrir muitas portas profissionalmente na cena do jazz em NY e no meio acadêmico também. Com este pequeno depoimento, eu quero fazer uma homenagem ao meu amigo e mentor Paul Meyers e a todos os professores da NJCU, que com seu talento e esforço admiráveis ajudaram a transformar a minha trajetória.

NJCU not only proved that getting a master’s degree in the tri-state area was possible, but it also provided me with the best education I could ask for.

Their music faculty is by far one of the best in the country.

Everyone was always extremely supportive and welcoming, including the public safety and cleaning staff—who put up with my practice sessions late at night for five years! I truly felt at home the minute I arrived on campus. NJCU will forever have a special place in my heart. My special thanks go to Dr. Amparo Fabra, Dr. Min Kim, Walt Weiskopf, and Allen Farnham.

Quando terminei a faculdade e comecei a procurar por estudos no exterior, viver na cidade de Nova Iorque parecia ser algo inatingível. A universidade de New Jersey City (NJCU) provou que não só era possível conseguir um mestrado nas regiões metropolitanas de Nova Iorque como também forneceu a melhor educação que eu poderia ter imaginado. Os professores do departamento de música estão com certeza entre os melhores do país.

A comunidade sempre foi muito generosa e acolhedora, incluindo o pessoal da segurança pública e os zeladores (que tiveram que aguentar os meus ensaios tarde da noite por cinco anos)! Eu realmente me senti em casa desde o primeiro momento em que eu pisei aqui no campus.
