CONVOCATION ADDRESS

Mr. Thyquel Halley, President, Student Government Organization, B.S., Political Science, expected 2023

Currently, she is working to build out the alumni programs at STEM From Dance, an organization that aims to expose young girls of color to STEM fields using the confidence-building aspects of dance. In addition to her work with STEM From Dance, Simone consults on various projects of interest at the intersection of equity, STEM, and education. Simone is also a performance artist who pursues many art forms such as dance, spoken word, and music.

Keynote Speaker

The keynote address will be delivered by Dr. Simone Hyater-Adams. Dr. Simone Hyater-Adams is a physicist, artist, educator, and researcher from Pennsauken NJ. With a passion for performance art, physics, and equity, she has dedicated her career to creating more opportunities for Black STEM students. After receiving her B.S. in Physics from Hampton University, she pursued graduate studies at the ATLAS Institute at the University of Colorado Boulder where she was a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellow. In her graduate research, she used her personal experiences from pursuing physics to guide her interdisciplinary research that examined the connections between performance art and identity for Black physicists. This work was awarded the Harry Lustig Award from the American Physical Society’s Four Corners Section.

"I encourage you to be as intentional as possible—explore your interests, explore relationships, career paths—however this may look for you. Take advantage of this space that will give you the chance to learn more about who you are now and who you want to be. In all my years studying identity, I've learned that self-understanding, self-awareness, and self-confidence are crucial in navigating this world where you can be and do anything. Remember that your identity, who you are, is ever evolving; it is impacted by everything around you, but similarly, you can impact everything around you too."

DR. SIMONE HYATER-ADAMS

Professor Emeritus/Emerita

Throughout her remarkable career, Dr. Levin has believed that effective curriculum and good teaching leads school-aged students to Dr.success.Levincontinues to serve the community as a docent at the Center for Holocaust, Human Rights, and Genocide in Monmouth County. Her dedication to service and academic success exemplifies NJCU’s commitment to excellence.

2022 RECIPIENTS OF PROFESSOR EMERITUS/EMERITA STATUS

Professor Winifred McNeill joined the NJCU Art Department in 1995, where for more than twentyfive years she made a particularly invaluable impact on our Art Teacher Certification Program. Nothing underscores that impact more than the NJCU art educators alumni network she helped establish and nurture. This network continues to bear fruit as it has helped engender a new NJCU dual enrollment program for Jersey City high school students. Without doubt, our excellent reputation for training art teachers is in no small part due to Professor McNeill.

Professor McNeill is a former chair of the Art Department whose expertise in accreditation and assessment was instrumental in making us one of only nine accredited National Association of Schools of Arts and Design (NASAD) institutions in New Jersey.

In Latin, emeritus means “veteran soldier.” Professor Emeritus or Professor Emerita is an honorary title conferred upon a retired NJCU professor for one’s longstanding commitments to the University mission and its students, significant contributions to the University and community, and distinguished accomplishments as a teacher and scholar. Professor Emeritus/ Emerita status is selected by faculty peers and administration each year.

Professor McNeill has been and continues to be part of the vital arts community in the greater New Jersey/New York region. Her work has been shown in national and international exhibitions, and she has participated in several residencies. In 2009, she was one of eight American artists to participate in the Dialogue in Chinese Gardens Residency in Suzhou, China. During her last sabbatical in the 2019-2020 academic year, she was awarded a prestigious residency at the European Ceramics Work Center in Osterwijk, Netherlands. She had a chance to show off some of this work last year at the Juried Show at Jersey City’s ArtFair 14C. Her current project is an art book that uses Vesuvius and Pompeii as its inspiration.

Dr. Frances Levin joined the Literacy Education Department in 1996 after completing her Ph.D. from Rutgers University Graduate School of Education. Her first book, The Guide for Alternate Route Teachers, was published in 2008 by Pearson Education. This book focused on the issues faced by all beginning teachers. The book was so well received that a second edition to the book was published in 2012. Her second book, Introduction to Teaching, was published in 2010 by Pearson Education. This book was an accompaniment to the course curriculum she wrote for the New Jersey Department of Education, Office of Teacher Licensure. This curriculum was used by all alternate route teachers seeking New Jersey certification.

The academic procession is led by the President of the University Senate, who bears the University’s ceremonial mace. Designed in 1987 by Herb Rosenberg, Professor of Art, the mace represents the home of learning surrounded by the human quest for discovery. In the words of the designer, the mace “is an androgynous figure stretching around an ancient pillar towards a crystal sphere of knowledge, slightly clouded with mystery and still to be discovered University magic.” The mace is crowned with a cluster, symbolizing power of creative passions in the service of universal peace. The scepter symbolizes the University’s urban mission: bringing people together to challenge their future.
