THE care at two hospitals in Rainworth has been rated outstanding.

Cygnet Health Care said it was delighted to announce that the Care Quality Commission (CQC) has rated the care provided by Sherwood Lodge, Cygnet’s specialist learning disability hospital, and Sherwood House, Cygnet’s

specialist rehabilitation mental health hospital, was outstanding.

The services provided by both hospitals were rated outstanding overall, and Cygnet Sherwood Lodge was rated outstanding across all five of the CQC’s assessment categories — caring, safe, effective, responsive and well-led services.

Royal honour for company A BLIDWORTH company is celebrating a prestigious award.

MiRiCal Emblems, a screen and digital printer, is to be presented with the Queen’s Award for Enterprise at Buckingham Palace in the summer.

The company has won the award for its international trade and excellence in exporting.

Over the past three years it has grown export sales by 58 per cent.

MiRiCal, based at The Epicentre on Mansfield Road, was set up in 1993. It manufactures heat-applied transfers, badges, labels and emblems that convey a brand image when applied to clothing.

RAINWORTH U3A celebrated St George’s Day with a red and white themed party at Rainworth Village Hall. There were sandwiches and cakes, a raffle and quiz as well as a concert by Newstead Brass Band, whose members played a good variety of music that ended with patriotic songs joined in by all amid much flagwaving and applause. A good time was had by all.

Outstanding hospitals win inspectors’ praise (Continued from page 1)

The hospital joins Cygnet Elms as the second of only two learning disability hospitals in the country to have achieved this extremely rare honour.

The CQC’s report for Sherwood Lodge praises the hospital’s ‘innovative and pioneering approaches to care’ and highlights how employees treated service users ‘with kindness, respected their privacy and dignity and understood the individual needs of patients’. The efforts of all staff are commended for empowering patients ‘to have a voice and realise their potential.’

The CQC also commended the ‘highly motivated’ team at Sherwood House with carers informing the CQC inspectors that ‘staff went the extra mile and their care and support exceeded their expectations’.

The specifically tailored nature of the care was singled out in the report, which describes the ‘proactive approach to understanding the needs of different groups of people’ and how care was delivered to meet those needs.

Claire Griffiths, hospital manager at Cygnet Sherwood Lodge, said: “I am incredibly proud of the entire Sherwood Lodge team.

“To achieve an ‘Outstanding’ CQC rating in all five assessment categories is a fitting testament to the excellent care and support we provide.

“This report is a welcome acknowledgement of the commitment of our staff to ensure patient-centred care, quality and innovation are at the heart of our service.”

Primary school’s Ofsted report celebration OFTSED inspectors have rated Lake View Primary School, Rainworth, as good after an inspection at the end of March.

A statement on the school website from the governing body said: “Our Ofsted report is now in the public domain for all to see. We are very proud of it.

“We are delighted with this overall result of ‘good’, and especially the grading of ‘outstanding’ for the personal development, behaviour and welfare of the children.

“There is much to celebrate and we will continue on our journey towards outstanding (narrowly missed in all areas).

“The governors would like to acknowledge the fact that the vision and drive of (headteacher) Miss Sally Warrington has been paramount in this result.

“It was noted by the lead inspector that we have a very strong and resilient headteacher, who has led the school through to this point. Of course, supported by a dedicated team of teachers and support staff.”

The Ofsted report praised staff for being enthusiastic.

It said: “Leaders, other staff and the governing body have a shared ambition and vision for the school. There is a culture of high expectations.

“Leaders’ actions are improving standards in reading, writing, mathematics and other subjects.

“The behaviour of pupils is outstanding. Pupils conduct themselves excellently at all times of the school day, including in corridors, assemblies, at lunchtimes or on the playground.

“Pupils show good understanding of British values. Inspectors observed older pupils leading ‘pupil parliament’ sessions, for example, in which they encouraged younger pupils to share their views on important issues and reflect on their feelings.”

Advice on how to light up your outdoor spaces GARDENING can have a positive impact on the lives of everyone in the UK.

And homeowners want their outdoor spaces to be looking their best — not just with green lawns and coloutrful plants and shrubs, but also with creative lighting that can turn even the simplest garden setting into a place of beauty as dusk creeps in.

No longer restricted to a simple porch lantern or glaring security lights, today’s exterior lighting has evolved to become more creative and inspirational than ever before.

Darren Staniforth, technical expert at leading electrical regulatory body, NICEIC, shares his top tips for garden lighting: • When it comes to garden lighting, concentrate on illuminating the most attractive features, such as a stand-out plant or water feature.

• Use navigational lighting to illuminate paths and steps.

• Up-lighting works well at the far end of the garden when shining on to a fence to make the space appear larger.

• Down-lighting should be used to highlight features such as a tree, or placed above a table for more light when dining al-fresco.

• Effects such as shadowing work well when placing a light in front of a sculptural plant or object to create a dramatic look.

As with any type of electrical work in the home, however, when lighting up an outside area it’s important to ensure it is installed professionally and safely.

Darren’s safety advice includes: • All outside sockets must be RCD protected for safety. An RCD (residual current device) works by switching off

the flow of electricity when a cable or flex is cut.

• Cables underground must be buried at a sufficient depth to avoid damage from garden tools. This will require the electrician to dig a trench in the garden.

• All cabling should be suitable for installation outside. Your registered electrician can advise you on the best options.

• Decorative lights plugged into an outdoor socket should be taken inside after use, unless they are clearly labelled as waterproof. They are not designed to stay out all year round.

• Always buy outdoor lighting equipment from a reputable retailer and ensure anything purchased is waterproof — especially if to be used for water features.

• Appropriate light fittings will always carry an IP rating, which indicates how well it stands up to external conditions.

It’s also worth looking out for a BEAB Approved Mark and the European Community (CE) safetysymbol too.

• Remember, any outdoor lighting installations that have been incorrectly selected, installed or damaged may create a risk of electric shock, resulting in serious injury or even death.

• If in doubt, it is always advisable to seek the help of a professional qualified electrician, such as those registered with the NICEIC, who will be able to make sure all work is done safely and to required standards.

Advice about what to do with baby birds AFTER receiving many calls last year from people in the East Midlands concerned about baby birds found away from their nest, the RSPCA has put together a poster on its website explaining how to tell a nestling from a fledgling.

In 2018, the charity received 9,163 reports that lone young birds they had spotted away from the nest needed help.

Most of last year’s calls (7,839) related to fledglings (older baby birds that are starting to fly), which the RSPCA advises

can generally be left to be cared for by their parents. The remaining calls about young birds related to nestlings — very young baby birds — who will not survive out of the nest.

It is these that are more likely to need help.

But how can you tell the difference between a nestling and a fledgling? In simple terms, nestlings have no feathers or very few. But most fledglings have all or most of their feathers and leave the nest just before they can fly. Unlike nestlings they can also perch, hop and walk.

Blidworth and District Historical and Heritage Society THE story of lost buildings in Nottinghamshire was the subject of a talk to Blidworth and District Historical and Heritage Society.

The group meets on the first Tuesday of each month at the Blidworth Welfare Function Room.

On Tuesday, 7th May, it received a visit from one of its favourite guest speakers, Bob Massey.

Bob can always be relied upon to deliver a talk that is both entertaining and informative — and this was no exception.

‘Gone But Not Forgotten’ was the story of the lost buildings of Nottinghamshire, demonstrated with slides, film and Bob’s unique and inimitable style that engrossed members and guests for over an hour.

Perhaps the highlight of the talk was a short five-minute film: Imagine it is 1903 and a man is standing at the front of a horse-drawn tram, winding the handle of his camera whilst the tram is travelling between the two railway stations of Arkwright Street and Victoria Station.

The streets are extremely busy with pedestrians and cyclists, not to mention other horse-drawn vehicles, all interweaving through the centre of the city and no-one giving any consideration to the possibility of a collision or an injury.

As the film progressed our speaker pointed out the many buildings, shops and cinemas that were since demolished and explained how many of the buildings on-route have been subject to the wrecking ball in the name of progress — or have just disappeared and been replaced with high-rise office blocks or multi-storey car parks.

The amount of horse-drawn traffic created its own form of pollution in and around the city, and this necessitated regular cleaning of the streets at the end of each day.

Built in 1926 to facilitate the children of the new village, created by the opening of the new Blidworth coal mine, the school was originally known as Blidworth County Council School. It catered for children between the ages of 5 and 14, and then later to 15 year-olds.

In 1970 Pedestrians not only needed to be aware of the traffic all around them, but also of where they stepped when crossing the street. The introduction of motor cars on to the city’s streets was welcomed by the general public and most of the pollution problems associated with horse-drawn traffic began to disappear, but this new form of transport has brought with it, its own form of pollution.

We were shown slides of other once famous Nottingham buildings now longer with us, such as the old Workhouse, before it was demolished to make way for Victoria Station; the Black Boy Hotel in Long Row was one of Nottingham’s most well-known buildings; the Empire theatre was where Ken Dodd made his first professional performance in 1954; the Watson Fothergill bridge across Postern Street connected the main Nottingham General Hospital building with some of its outlying wards.

A few may claim that these were not Nottingham’s most attractive buildings, yet there departure is yet another sign of the way the city is constantly changing and evolving.

Nottingham is an outstanding city and should be proud of its heritage.

Out of this world at Farnsfield Scouts 1st Farnsfield Scout Group paraded with a thousand other young people and adults through Southwell for a St George’s Day celebration at Southwell Minister.

Members of the group have also played golf at Norwood Park and camped with other Scouts to celebrate 50 years since the moon landing.

Most recently, 1st Farnsfield Beavers, Cubs and Scouts joined hundreds of other young people at Sherbrooke Scout Campsite over the May Day bank holiday weekend to take part in a space-themed adventure camp (pictured).

A total of 80 members of the group enjoyed numerous activities over an action-packed weekend of fun,

including tunnelling, space-themed craft, laser tag, back to basics and a talent show.

On the Friday night Cubs and Scouts descended on the campsite to setup and strike camp, ready for the grand opening ceremony to start the celebrations.

On the Saturday Beavers, aged 6 to 8, joined in the fun with an activity day and sleepover.

The group thanked all the adults who helped support the camp — setting up, taking down and cooking.

It said it could not provide this fun and adventure without adult support.

Double high note for school choir BURNTSTUMP Seely Church of England Primary Academy choir won the Key Stage 2 Own Choice class at the annual Mansfield Music and Drama Festival at the Palace Theatre Mansfield.

Following that success, the choir was invited to return with winners from other categories to perform at a winners’ concert the following week, when it received more silverware — the Pamela Cook Award for the best school choir.

Head teacher Heather Gabb said the children were a credit to her school.

“The choir are really strong this year and we were fairly confident, but we know it’s a challenging competition and you never know how it is going to go on the day.

“The choirs we were up against were stunning and I was possibly more nervous than the children were.”

Have a go at petanque PEOPLE are being urged to have a go at the sport of petanque. Free sessions are being held at Ravenshead Leisure Centre by Ravenshead Petanque Club. Equipment and refreshments are provided at the sessions, on Wednesdays and Saturdays, from 2pm to 4pm, and Thursdays, from 7pm to 9pm.

Rebrand and record results MANSFIELD Building Society announced the launch of a new brand and a record post-tax profit of £1.75m at its 2018 AGM.

The new brand has taken creative inspiration from the society’s location near Sherwood Forest as well as a look back into the area’s rich industrial past.

The Mansfield’s new logo features a combined forest and stag motif, and its building society status, which the Society says reaffirms its commitment to its strong mutual ethos and proud heritage.

The society said it remained dedicated to responding to social need, working with both savers and borrowers to offer product solutions that meet today’s financial needs.

In 2018, The Mansfield lent £94m in new mortgage loans, resulting in an 11.7% increase in mortgage assets in the year, whilst at the same time adding almost £25m to its total savings balances, and posting a record post-tax profit of £1.75m.

During 2018 the society added a number of mortgage products to its overall proposition, including the launch of its new Family Assist mortgage to help first-time buyers struggling to save for a deposit,

and expanded access to mortgage finance for older borrowers in, or approaching, retirement.

In addition, the society made available some of its best savings rates for local residents and existing customers, including its range of community saver accounts where the society commits an amount equal to 0.1% of balances to its Charitable Trust each year – total community saver balances are already heading towards £10m, helping to create a charitable legacy for years to come.

The society also announced its continued commitment to improving the quality of life for those living, working and volunteering in its heartland area with donations through its Community Support Scheme as well as its Charitable Trust, including; £42,500 pledged to Portland College to help fund an innovative woodland adventure trail; £10,000 donated to R.E.A.L. Education to create a mobile classroom; and £10,000 awarded to The Inspire and Achieve Foundation to expand its Prince’s Trust p programme in the local area.

MP raises awareness SHERWOOD MP Mark Spencer (above) marked Ovarian Cancer Awareness Day by publicly displaying his support in the House of Commons.

He wore a white rose, a symbol of Ovarian Cancer awareness, in the chamber of the House of Commons during Prime Ministers Questions. The white rose is designed to encourage women to check for the signs and symptoms of the cancer.

Mark said: “I’m very proud to show my support for this awareness campaign, and to wear the white rose in the chamber of the House of Commons itself, especially during PMQs.” “I think anything that raises the awareness of Ovarian Cancer, and cancer generally, is so important and cannot be understated.

“If me wearing the white rose and trying to raise awareness on social media helps just one person to go and get checked out, I’ll be more than happy.”

“Catching cancer early is often half the battle, so please encourage everyone across Sherwood to check. If in doubt, give your doctors a quick ring and get yourself booked in for a check.”

The MP shared a link on his Facebook page and on his website that describes how to spot the symptoms of Ovarian Cancer, and advised residents to contact their doctor if they have any questions or are in any doubt about Ovarian Cancer or cancer more generally.

Blidworth and Rainworth WI meeting report THE May meeting of Blidworth and Rainworth WI was cancelled at the last minute due to a mix-up over the local elections.

The group said it hoped the cancellation didn’t inconvenience anyone... and, hopefully, the June and July meetings would go ahead unchallenged!

At June’s meeting there will be A Librarian’s Tale, by Janet Gilchrist, and in July Bits And Bobs with Bob Neill. Both

will be chatty, fun evenings. Meetings are held on the first Thursday of each month at Blidworth Methodist Church Hall (downstairs) at 7.15pm. Call Mary Ledger on 01623 799095 for information.

Eye Health - What is a Cataract?

To mark the start of Cataract Awareness Month this June, LaserVision Consultant Ophthalmologists Professor Harminder Dua and Mrs Dalia Said discuss the causes and treatments of this common condition

The eye has a crystalline transparent lens more or less similar to the lens of a camera which focuses one third of the light on the retina. This is the sensitive film of the eye which transmits the image for the brain to process so that we can see it.

A cataract is a clouding of this crystalline lens most commonly due to age, however it can be

caused by trauma, prolonged use of steroids (as topical eye drops or systemically), some systemic diseases such as diabetes or even as a congenital birth defect.

lens is fragmented by a specialised ultrasound machine and aspirated.

A plastic lens is then implanted inside the eye to replace the original crystalline lens.

In the early stages of developing a cataract, patients often complain of reduced vision (especially at night), some glare while driving or inability to read.

The power of the plastic lens can be tailored to focus the light for distance or near vision, or in some cases a multifocal lens – a lens that can focus light for both distant and near vision can be inserted to help patients see at variable distance without the need for glasses.

Cataract is usually very slowly progressive and can take a long time to affect vision.

When the cataract is severe enough to interfere with vision, surgery can be performed to improve vision. The opaque natural lens is removed through a small incision in the eye and the

Cataract surgery is the most established operation performed in the body and has a short recovery time with a 95 percent gratifying result.

Young Leader Award Learning Together Days

EVERY year group held fantastic learning days last term where parents were invited in and worked on a STEM project (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths). In Key Stage 2, children were given a set amount of lollipop sticks, elastic bands and just one plastic spoon. They had to design a catapult that would fling an object as far as possible and had great fun firing their designs in the school playground.

In Key Stage 1, the children had to make the tallest tower using just two sheets of newspaper and then designed a bridge to hold weights using only ten pieces of A4 paper.

It was brilliant to see such fantastic innovation and the parents that attended were incredibly competitive!

This term, the school will be holding learning days centred around the school grounds and all of the children will be creating something using natural resources.

Recyling

THIS year, the school has taken part in the Big Battery Hunt to find and recycle some of the 600 million batteries that are thrown away every year in the UK to avoid them being sent to landfill sites.

More than 7,542 batteries were collected in school. Thank you to all of the children for bringing them in. The child in each class that brought in the most will be receiving a special prize for their efforts.

School Garden

CHILDREN have been busy in the school garden this term and have been weeding and planting, not only to learn about the lifecycle of plants to support their Science work, but also to hopefully produce a bumper crop of vegetables this year.

Each year group has grown a specific crop and the plan is that they will then harvest it and turn it into something wonderful to eat as part of DT lessons.

YEAR 2 worked extremely hard to achieve their Young Leaders award this term.

The children have worked on a variety of attributes, such as teamwork, friendship, patience and community.

As part of the community strand, the children planted bulbs around the school sign on Swinton Rise, where the community will be able to appreciate them when they bloom.

There will be an award ceremony in June to celebrate their achievement of the award and parents will be invited to attend.

Spring Bounce

ALL of the children enjoyed their one minute on the bouncy castle to raise funds for the PTA. The children were sponsored to complete as many bounces as they could in one minute and the person in each class who managed the most won chocolate eggs.

A fantastic £638.80 was raised and this will be used for projects around the school.

Easter performance and Easter Egg Roll YEAR 3 and 4 children put on a superb Easter performance, ‘Roll Back The Stone’, at St Peter’s Church.

This told the story of the crucifixion of Christ — the journey along the crowd-lined roads in Jerusalem, Judas’ betrayal, the Last Supper, Jesus’ trial and crucifixion, finishing with a joyful celebration because Jesus had been resurrected.

The acting and singing were phenomenal and some of the children were even brave enough to sing a solo in front of a packed church full of parents.

Well done to all of the children for their hard work rehearsing and a big thank you to the teachers and teaching assistants for all their efforts too.

The much-contested annual Easter egg roll took place before the Easter holidays.

Every child in the school took their turn to roll their hardboiled egg down the ramp to see who could roll it the furthest in each class.

The victor in each class won a chocolate Easter egg and there was even a prize for the teacher who rolled it the furthest. It was great to see some wonderfully decorated eggs.

Raising more than £1,000 at Rotary Club’s quiz night THE Rotary Club of Ravenshead and Blidworth held its annual Quiz Night at Blidworth Miners’ Welfare.

Nearly 100 ticket holders were tested and teased by the quiz masters over the evening to come up with the eventual winners, the Quizzie Rascals.

This year we were tested on general knowledge, different types of fruit and musical intros.

Refreshment was taken in the form of pie, peas and chips.

Many thanks were give to all those who made the evening a great success, raising just over £1,000 for the club’s charities.

The club also gave special thanks to the staff at Blidworth Miners’ Welfare for providing an excellent venue, and BJ Catering who provided good quality food.

A spokesman said: “We are also grateful to Bradbury’s, Sainsburys Local, Tesco Express, McColl’s and The

Memory Lane Group to talk about holidays RAVENSHEAD Memory Lane Group, which meets at St Peter’s Church Lounge, Sheepwalk Lane, on the second Wednesday of each month, from 2pm to 4pm, offers coffee and a chat for carers with patients suffering from dementia.

THE community of Ollerton and Boughton turned out in numbers to enjoy another successful St George’s Day celebration in the streets of Old Ollerton.

The day, organised by volunteers with support from Ollerton and Boughton Town Council, was packed with a wide range of activities, including local community groups with stalls, musicians, singing, Morris dancing, duck races, a children’s Ollerton’s Got Talent competition, local arts, rides, lots of bubbles, a parade and the Dukeries Band.

Jerry Hague, Labour Parliamentary candidate for Sherwood, was delighted to be invited to the event and congratulated the organisers and all those who contributed to the spectacle.

“It is great to see such an inclusive event, which attracted people from every part of the area all joining together to show what a positive atmosphere Ollerton can create,” he said.

“We should celebrate St George’s Day as other nations are proud to do (with their patron saints) and respect the values we believe are important to the country. Ollerton has certainly done this in style!”

Heritage Museum to host photographic exhibition A SPECIAL photographic exhibition will be at Bilsthorpe Heritage Museum to celebrate Father’s Day.

‘Bilsthorpe Dads’ will be on Sunday, 16th June, from 10am until 4pm.

Admission and refreshments ( tea and home-baked cakes) are free, so if a dad or grandad lived or worked in Bilsthorpe, go along and take a look.

On Saturday, 13th April, the museum had an exhibition and sales marquee at the opening of Bilsthorpe Old Village Play Park, Despite a very chilly morning, it was a well-attended event. Thanks are due to Bilsthorpe Parish Council and helpers for all their hard work, which contributed to the great success.

April, there was a ‘Hunt The Easter Chick fun event at the museum for younger visitors, with edible prizes!

On Sunday, 28th April, the museum took part in Radio Nottingham’s Big Day Out and welcomed lots of extra visitors.

On Saturday, 4th May, members and friends made a trip to Apedale Heritage Centre, Staffordshire, where there was a warm welcome by the volunteers there.

Bilsthorpe members enjoyed the welldisplayed museum, an informative, guided tour of a drift mine, a tasty home-cooked lunch and a short ride through the countryside on a narrow gauge, vintage railway. The minibus was provided by Ravenshead Community Transport and was driven by Peter.

The Spring Coffee Morning in Bilsthorpe Village Hall included another popular ‘Memory Lane’ photographic display of village life. The event was very well-attended and more than £600 was raised. Volunteers, supporters and guest helpers, who included Toby Francis, Gillian and John Hattersley, Jan Jones, Tracey Martwich, Celia Smith and Doreen Smith, were thanked.

Member Alan Ward gave the vote-ofthanks and called the raffle, with the first prize of a grocery basket being won

by Gemma Dobson.

The next fund-raising event will be a Tabletop Sale on Saturday, 10th August (all tables now booked).

JERRY Hague, Labour Parliamentary candidate for Shewood, attended a meeting of the Rotary Club of Ravenshead and Blidworth to learn about the wide range of contributions the club makes to the local community.

Jerry heard how Rotary Club members raise money to support vital services, make donations to help primary schools in Blidworth and Ravenshead, run D.A.R.E. courses, and sponsor places at the Detatched Youth Project in Rainworth.

Jerry said: “It was a pleasure to be invited to the meeting of the Rotary Club of Ravenshead and Blidworth and hear about the valuable support the members,who are all volunteers, have provided over the past 12 months to really important activities and causes.

Bilsthorpe Garden Club visit Harrogate show BILSTHORPE Garden Club’s April meeting was an illustrated, informative talk by volunteers from Potwell Dyke Grasslands at Southwell.

Members were told how the project began 15 years ago, how the grasslands are planted and managed (including cutting by a local farmer, followed by sheep grazing and seed dispersal), management of wetland and woodland areas, and some stunning images of flora and fauna present there, including many varieties of butterfly and moth and several types of wild orchid and a cowslip meadow in Spring.

The group hopes to have a guided evening walk through the grasslands.

Spring Show, where they enjoyed the floral and craft marquees, show gardens, flowers and floral arrangements, stalls of every garden-related type, and talks and demonstrations.

A good day out was had by all with lots of bargain purchases. Local author to give talk

Classic car show weekend preview FIFTY years of the Ford Capri will be celebrated at the 19th Wonderland Classic and Sports Car Festival.

The annual event will take place at Ferry Farm, Hoveringham, on 29th and 30th June.

A Capri 50 Years timeline is planned, starting from 1969 and taking visitors through the MK1, MKII and MKIII years to 1986, when production ended —­and then onwards to 2019 with Capri restorations, modifications and rebuilds.

The RS34100, Perana, JPS, Broadspeed, Tickford, Zakspeed and Brooklands 280 are just a few of the Capris planned for the display.

The Saturday of the show will start

earlier than previous years, at noon, with a Car of the Night Trophy awarded at 8pm.

There will be live music during the evening from local band Beggars Belief.

The Sunday, known as Show ‘n’ Shine Day, features judging for vehicles from around the world manufactured or registered before 31st December 2010, including British classics, American ‘muscle’ cars and European classic and sports car legends.

Wonderland 2019 will feature many models across the Ford range, custom cars, Rods and vehicles of special interest, such as kit cars, military and commercial vehicles.

FORMER Ravenshead woman Sarah Murden is to give a talk at Mansfield Library about her new book, All Things Georgian: Tales From The Long 18th Century.

Sarah, a former pupil at Queen Elizabeth Girls’ Grammar School, and then a student at West Nottinghamshire College, wrote the book with Joanne Major.

It looks at royal links, scandals and unconventional marriages associated with Welbeck Abbey and the CavendishBentinck family.

The book is a collection of 25 true short stories. The talk is on Tuesday, 18th June, at 2pm. The book has been published by Pen And Sword.

Food intolerance... and why we should test for it Digestive specialist Janet Stafford writes about food intolerances I HAVE many clients who come to my clinic presenting with a huge range of symptoms, such as abdominal pain, aches and pains, acne, bloating, constipation, chronic fatigue syndrome, diarrhoea, eczema, irritable bowel syndrome, itching, headaches, hyperactivity, low mood, migraines, nausea, rashes, rhinitis, sinusitis, skin problems, stomach cramps, tiredness, urticaria, weight loss/gain, and wheezing to name but a few conditions.

Many of my clients are at a loss as to how they can make themselves feel better. Many frequently visit their doctors and are given medication, but still the symptoms persist and they are not sure why. This can lead to some people, feeling at a loss as to how they can make themselves feel better, becoming depressed and subsequently being prescribed antidepressants.

However, another available option, if you suffer persistently with any of the above conditions might be worth considering — a test for food intolerances.

Food intolerance testing is becoming more widespread and enables you to take control of your health and not have to rely on the many pills that doctors prescribe.

Many individuals find that being tested for

food intolerances can really help to make a real difference to their quality of life.

It should be noted that the term food intolerance and food allergy are very different things. Genuine food allergy is relatively rare — only about 2% of the population are affected. A food allergy is where the body mistakes the food for a foreign invader and a rapid allergic reaction ensues.

Food intolerance is not life threatening, but it can have an impact on the quality of your day-to-day life. As protein is broken down by the body into smaller fragments for easy absorption, the larger fragments may struggle to breakdown and, therefore,

the body reacts by attacking them using the antibody called Immunoglobulin G, also known as IgA. When offending foods are eaten, it can be up to 72 hours for them to be digested and to trigger a reaction. Often, on average, people who are intolerant to a certain food can be intolerant to up to four or five foods at a time.

Unfortunately, unlike in Europe, which tests routinely for food intolerances, the NHS does not offer such extensive food testing programmes. The testing that is done in the NHS is limited, often only used to inform doctors in the diagnosis of certain conditions. However, whilst these extensive and valuable tests are not available on the NHS, in my clinic I can offer a simple blood test that could transform the way you feel.

The test will look at between 100 to 200 food reactions with only a simple blood prick. Once the test is registered, the results come back quite quickly, usually within a week to 10 days.

I am also able to test for homocysteine levels. This is an important marker in keeping us healthy; this simple amino acid can be associated with a higher risk of heart disease, stroke, Alzheimer’s and dementia. HEALTHY eating is essential for overall good health, but do you know the best foods to include in your meals, and those best avoided?

Let’s take a look at some facts, to help you make realistic and informed choices.

Your body needs energy to function normally and keep you alive. You get this energy from nutrients in the food that you eat — mostly, carbohydrates, fats and proteins. Minerals and vitamins are other nutrients that are also important in your diet to help your body stay healthy.

It is important to get the right balance between these different nutrients to get maximum health benefits. Your daily eating plan should contain food from each of the following food groups: •Starchy foods such as bread, pasta, potatoes, rice, etc.

•Fruit, vegetables and salad •Milk and dairy foods

•Protein foods. These include meat, fish, eggs, nuts, tofu, pulses etc.

As a general rule, starchy foods and fruit and vegetables should provide the bulk of most of your meals. About one third of what you eat should be made up from starchy foods and about one third from fruit and vegetables. The remaining one third of your ideal food plan should be made up from milk and dairy foods, and protein foods. In addition, plenty of fibre and water in your diet is also important for your health.

Eating healthily can also help to prevent certain serious diseases such as heart disease, stroke and diabetes, and may also help to reduce your risk of developing some cancers. If you become sick, following a eating a healthy eating plan can help you to recover more quickly.

Also, a main way of preventing obesity and overweight is to eat a healthy and varied diet. If you are overweight or obese, eating a healthy diet can help you lose weight but it is important to limit the amount of foods

and drinks that are high in fat or sugar.

These foods are high in calories and low in nutrients.

You may be eating very healthy foods but you still need to keep an eye on your portion sizes because if they are too large, you will still gain weight. You could change your plate size for a smaller one – that way you will automatically serve up smaller portions.

Do not feel that you always have to clear your plate, as filling yourself with food your body doesn’t need is only going to cause you to put on weight on because the excessive food gets stored as fat. lIf you need help with your weight, you could contact Margaret Turner, who has specialised in weight management for the past 10 years.

Schools wanted to tackle hate and create positive messages SECONDARY schools across Mansfield, Ashfield and Sherwood are being urged to take part in a fully-funded national programme tackling hate and creating ambassadors to share positive messaging on social media

The UNITE project is being developed locally by the National Holocaust Centre and Museum in Laxton, and will involve students taking part in a series of workshops on myth busting, stereotyping nd how hate manifests online.

Students will showcase their creative work and share their thoughts on how to challenge hate in a film, before going on to learn how to create a social media campaign.

A team from The National Holocaust Centre and Museum will go into participating schools through the

outreach programme. Ten pupils from each participating school will be invited to educational No To Hate days. There will also be the opportunity for teacher training, and schools will receive guidance and resources.

Students will learn how to think critically, respond compassionately and speak powerfully. It is hoped the initiative will increase students’ understanding of the impact of hate crime.

The project is being supported by the Building a Stronger Britain Together programme (BSBT). BSBT is a partnership between Government and civil society across England and Wales.

It seeks to bring people together to build stronger communities that are more resilient to extremism, tackle extremism in all its forms, and offer people a positive alternative regardless

of race, faith, sexuality, age and gender.

A spokesman for the UNITE programme nationally said: “Building on our successful No To Hate days and Breaking The Cycle programme, the UNITE project aims to tackle hate and isolation, and to empower young people as upstanders.

“Through BSBT (Building a Stronger Britain Together) funding, we are working with Stop Hate UK to deliver the national project, which aims to support young people to challenge hate and promote a positive counternarrative in their schools and communities.”

Dinosaur Discovery The Holocaust Museum On 25th April, Year Six had an opportunity of going to the fabulous Holocaust Museum in Laxton, to remember the tragic events that took place in World War Two and the precious souls that were claimed by Adolf Hitler.

We learnt lots of interesting information about what happened in the Holocaust.

We had the pleasure of going through some old-fashioned Jewish rooms and learnt about a young boy’s life and what happened to him during that terrible time.

We also listened to Edith Jane’s story and where she had to go when the second world war struck Austria.

OVER the last couple of weeks, Foundation pupils have been learning all about dinosaurs. They went on a dinosaur hunt and found amazing dinosaur eggs, dino babies, large footprints and two friendly T-Rexs.

The children were detectives and had to find clues to discover the area where the dinosaurs were hiding. They all used binoculars and spyglasses to find even the hardest of clues. All of the children explained that it was a fantastic experience.

YEAR Three children learned all about the Ancient Greeks this term.

They learnt all about the Greek gods… with even teachers dressing up as their favourite god.

The children all found out how to write their names in Greek. They went through the timeline of the Greeks and discovered about when things were built and where they lived. All of them had a great time and learnt lots of interesting things!

WHAT does the word graffiti convey to you? Vandalism? Words carved by bored choir boys?

In Southwell Minster there are many marks on the walls and columns that you would not normally notice if you walked round or attended a concert, but as Matt Beresford, of MB Archaeology, told the Farnsfield Local History Society at their May meeting, there are not only masons’ marks visible but also a rat, a bird, and the outline of a shoe that has been drawn round.

Also, in the Chapter House, behind

one of the wooden seats, is a stave and musical notes. These form a chant that has been recorded by a choir. It is not known why and how long it has been there, but it is all fascinating to know.

The society’s next meeting will be on Wednesday, 12th June, at 7.30pm, in the Lower Hall of the Village Centre.

The speaker will be Ann Featherstone and the talk is Maidens, Murderers and Monsters.

There will not be a speaker in July as the meeting is the society’s Summer Social for members. This will be followed

Learning about graffiti in Southwell Minster later in the month by a trip on the Chesterfield Canal.

There is no meeting in August.

In September, there will be a visit to the British Geological Survey in Keyworth.

A spokesman for the society said: “We hope you saw our Queen Victoria scarecrow on the May Bank Holiday.

“We chose her to mark her 200th birthday. Thanks to the team who makes such distinguished scarecrows each year.”

Serving our veterans WELCOME to a new column for The Sherwood, written by our new columnist, David Ainsworth (above).

ALL GP practices are now offering pre-bookable appointments up to 8pm on weekdays and on both Saturday and Sunday mornings.

The appointments will be either at your own practice or at one nearby.

It’s great news for busy working people to be able to book in with a GP or nurse after work.

And if you’re unwell but it can wait 24 hours, you can make use of the weekend appointments by calling on a Friday.

GPs are signing up to become ‘Veteran Friendly’ under a new national scheme to improve medical care and treatment for former members of the Armed Services.

The extra support includes mental health (especially for PTS), artificial limbs, help with housing issues, and Red Cross for any equipment.
