I recently had the honor of presenting the Dale Aulik Memorial Scholarship to Luke Slaby of Kewaunee. (See WACTAL Scholarship article on page 7). I had known Dale and his wife JoAnn for many years. Dale was a good friend of mine and a very strong advocate for our industry.

He will be truly missed by many.

While sitting at the awards ceremony and listening to the presentations, I was very impressed by the many outstanding students that received the various awards, and by what they had accomplished in their short high school careers. We

hear so much negativity nowadays about where we will get quality entry-level technicians. These people are out there. We just need to get the information out to them about the benefits of working in our industry. We also need to get the parents to understand the benefits of their son or daughter pursuing a technical education degree as opposed to a four-year degree.

Recently, the Collision Repair Education Foundation announced that they have distributed approximately 14 million dollars in scholarships and grants in 2014. This is made possible because of

incredible industry support. We also need to do our part by talking to area high schools and offering tours of our facilities.

Also, consider making a donation to the WACTAL Scholarship Foundation to encourage more students like Luke!

“Recruit-a-Member”

For each member an existing WACTAL member recruits, the sponsoring (existing) member will receive a one-time $50 credit toward their membership dues.

There is no limit on the number of members an existing member can recruit.

If the dollar amount of the credits exceeds the sponsoring member’s annual dues, the excess amount will carry forward to subsequent years.

No monies will be paid out and credits cannot be cashed out.

Credits cannot be split amongst multiple members.

The sponsoring member’s individual and business name must be listed on the new member’s Application for Membership as the sponsoring member.

If the new member had been a WACTAL member during the prior calendar year, no commission will be allowed.

This program can be rescinded or amended without prior notice. In the event the program is rescinded or amended, credits for applications received after the change will be processed under the new program. No credits will be issued if the program is rescinded.

WACTAL and WATDA Scholarship Awarded to Luke Slaby

It’s summer, which means school is ending and the future is beginning for many young folks around the country. For one young man from Kewaunee, thanks to WACTAL and the Wisconsin Automobile & Truck Dealers Association, he is now one step closer to his future.

The WACTAL scholarship program began in 1998 out of a “desire to offer financial assistance for post-secondary education to young people preparing for a career in collision repair,” and a need to “give back to the collision repair industry.” The application process includes evaluation through application, testing and interviews. Since its foundation over 17 years ago, more than $44,000 has been awarded to deserving students.

This year’s award winner was Luke Slaby, son of Shelly and Ronald Slaby, who was presented the Dale Aulik Memorial Auto Collision Technician Award in a ceremony on May 20. WACTAL President Larry Terrien and JoAnn Aulik, wife of the late Dale Aulik, presented the $2,000 endowment and tool set from the Snap-on Corporation (valued at $3,667) to the young tech in order for him to further pursue his education and training in the automotive repair field. Slaby is currently enrolled in the Auto Collision Repair and Refinishing Technology Associate Degree

Program at Northwest Wisconsin Technical College in Green Bay. Upon graduation, he plans to pursue a career in the automotive repair industry, hoping to one day ultimately own his own repair shop.

Slaby is a well-rounded individual with backgrounds in more than just automotive repair. According to his scholarship application, he also holds a black belt in Tae Kwan Do, was a defensive MVP for his varsity soccer team and is a Kewaunee High School Honor Roll student.

According to his English teacher, Julie Derenne, “[Slaby] works extremely hard and is very smart and intuitive when it comes to meeting challenges. He seeks extra help when needed, and is not afraid to ask questions. This is the sign of a true scholar. A scholar realizes that he or she does not know everything, but works and studies to come to a better understanding of life, and the world around him or her.”

JoAnn Aulik was more than pleased with the decision to bestow the gift to Slaby.

“I work with someone from the Kewaunee area who said that Luke is a fine fellow who comes from a good family,” she explained. “When his name was called, a lot of his buddies applauded and yelled good things so it made me feel good because he is well-liked by his peers. Dale would have been very pleased.”

“By awarding me this scholarship, [WACTAL has] lightened my financial burden, which allows me to focus more on learning and my academic performance,” Slaby expressed in a gracious letter to the association. “I hope one day that I will also be able to help struggling students reach their goals in higher education by assisting them in the same way you have helped me.”

Five-Year Painter Training for USEPA Auto Body Refinishing Rule

All auto body refinishing facilities are required to complete painter training and recertification every five years under the US Environmental Protection Agency’s (USEPA) National Emissions Standard for Hazardous Air Pollutants for Paint Stripping and Miscellaneous Surface Coating at Area Sources, also called the Auto Body Refinishing Rule.

In the spring of 2010, collision repair shops worked to complete the initial painter training requirements under the Auto Body Refinishing Rule. Painter experience was initially allowed to satisfy the training, but can no longer be used to meet the refresher training requirements. The rule requires each painter that sprays paint to repeat the training within five years of the original training or certification.

The painter training elements required in the rule include a classroom session focused on requirements of the USEPA rule, and both hands-on and classroom sessions on the following elements: proper operation of the spray booth and overspray filters, proper ventilation of paint booths to meet the pressure drop requirements, proper spray gun set up and operation, spray techniques for optimizing transfer efficiency and minimizing coating usage and overspray and the proper spray gun cleaning techniques to minimize release of solvents.

The Auto Body Refinishing Rule goal is to reduce emissions of toxic air pollutants including metal compounds containing cadmium, chromium, lead, manganese and nickel in the paint pigments. Switching to water-based coating systems does not exclude facilities from the rule requirement; some water-based coatings contain the regulated metal compounds in their pigments.

Shop owners must certify that each painter has completed the required training and retain a copy of the certification on site for all painters, including for any subcontractors that may paint in their shop.

Painters should retain a copy of the certification for their personal records.

All training certification records must be kept for at least five years from the date the record was created to meet the requirement of this rule.

Advanced Economical Vehicles For two decades, we have been trying to warn the masses that technology will hit them quickly and hard, like a double right uppercut with a finishing left hook from Mike Tyson. It all started in 1995 with the introduction of the Audi A8 Aluminum Space Frame, followed by the following: • In early 1999, Volvo started to use one of the highest-strength steels we have ever seen, Boron-alloyed, in their rear body panels/bumper reinforcements.

• In 2001, many European OEs started to use Boron-alloyed steel in dash crossbeams and seat assemblies.

• In early 2003, we first saw Boronalloyed steel used for door intrusion beams and in B-Pillars for reinforcements on many European models.

• In early 2005, we saw Martensitic (hot-stamped steel or quenched steel) and Boronalloyed steel used in rocker panel reinforcements, B-Pillars and upper outer roof rail assemblies on most European and Asian vehicles.

and Ford is utilizing Boron-alloyed steels in their economical vehicles for A-Pillar, B-Pillar and Rocker panel reinforcements on late model vehicles (2012 and newer). As you can see, much of what the European (specifically the German) OEs have been doing since late 1999 through the early part of the 2000s are now catching on with the Asians and Americans. However, there is more copying going on.

Over the past two to three years with the higher usage of HSS on outer panels on Toyota, Honda and VW, they have adopted many sectioning areas on outer panels that require silicone bronze welds. Most OEMs now require STRSW when replacing outer components and inner structural components, as opposed to MAG (Metal Active Gas) welding.

Another thing we are seeing that started with the European OEMs back in early 2001 is the dealer-sponsored, OEM-trained independent collision centers. As of about 2012, we have seen Ford, Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep and GM jump on board with a Collision Repair Program. Last year saw Nissan/Infiniti open a program, while Honda/Acura launched their program in 2015. BMW just introduced the i3, which is constructed with many Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic (CFRP) components. CFRP was generally used on super cars like Ferrari, Corvette ZR1/Z06, Viper, Lambos, etc., but the i3 is an electric vehicle that is intended to be economical. The 2016 BMW Series 7 structure will be constructed from ADHSS, aluminum and CFRP. Based on history, how long do you think it will be before economical vehicles will be designed with CFRP? History does repeat itself and sets up a look at what we did not realize, because we did not envision it. Let us look at the history of aluminum-intensive vehicles:

The American Big Three (GM, Ford and Chrysler) started using Dual Phase (DP) steels and Ultra High Strength Steels (UHSS) in 2003 and did not start using Martensitic or Boron alloyed steels until late 2009/early 2010 on some of their models for rocker panel and B-Pillar reinforcements. Asian OEs have been utilizing Advanced High Strength Steels (AHSS) in the passenger compartment of inner structural reinforcements since 2008 on their economical vehicles. As for the American Big Three, high-grade DP is now being utilized in most GM vehicles, High Strength Low Alloy (HSLA) steels are being utilized by Chrysler 10

Since about 2001, Mercedes-Benz has had procedures for rivets for steel-to-steel attachment mating areas where the Squeeze Type Resistance Welding arms could not gain access to the backside and silicone bronze in the open sectioning joints on outer panels.

Since about 2003, BMW has required outer steel panels and inner structural aluminum to be replaced with a rivet-bond procedure with the sectioning joints to be a butt joint with the insert fully bonded. On the other hand, Chrysler has had weld-bonding (STRSW and adhesives) with a bonded butt joint procedure on their vehicles since 2001, and Ford has had similar weld-bond procedures (but with a weld-

• Audi followed with their own hybrid construction in 2008 with the TT. • Porsche introduced Panamera in 2010 another hybrid construction vehicle.

Nevertheless, it seems that not many were interested in aluminum repair procedures and equipment over the past 10-20 years - until now. You might ask why, and that’s an easy answer. Ford has introduced one of the most popular vehicles, the F-150, in an aluminum body over a steel frame. Now the masses will need to understand aluminum repair procedures, but as we mentioned above, steel economical vehicles have also advanced in construction.

Remember to review all the OEM repair information prior to beginning any repair, as there will probably be a difference between how the OEM made the vehicle and how the OEM wants the panel reattached in the repair process. We hope this article has helped the industry to better understand how the highend European vehicle designs are now influencing the Asian and American OEs in the designs of their economical vehicles.

From fixing up his own cars as an adolescent to dreams of one day becoming an MSO, Ryan Carriveau has had a long journey in the automotive repair industry. As the current owner of Merton Auto Body in Merton, WI, Carriveau has used that experience to create a shop atmosphere that he is proud of. Wisconsin Automotive News sat down with Carriveau to talk about his story, where he has been, where he’s going and what he loves most about this industry.

Carriveau: We have a team here that treats customers better than our competition because they all truly care about the customer.

WAN: What has been your best accomplishment?

Carriveau: We’ve created a culture of change, or rather, changed the culture of the shop. In about a year’s time we saw a change from

WAN: How long have you been a member of WACTAL?

Carriveau: I’ve been a member of WACTAL for as long as I’ve owned the shop. The previous owners were longtime members and I just picked up where they left off. I enjoy the trend of industry information that WACTAL continuously provides. The biggest things in our industry are news and trends and WACTAL helps keep us up to date.

Carriveau: Business-wise I would like to be an MSO. Yet for the industry, I believe there is going to be more downsizing based on the average age of a lot of shop owners, a lot of shops will either have to choose to close or to turn over their business to someone else.

Ryan Carriveau: I got into the industry because, as a teenager, I had a habit of crashing cars. Being young, I didn’t have too much money so it became more cost effective to fix them myself. The previous owner of Merton Auto Body offered me a job and, about a year ago and after a lot of hard work, I ended up buying the shop from him.

Carriveau: I currently have nine people that work for Merton Auto Body and I am constantly impressed with their exceptional attitudes and ability to work as a team. It really has nothing to do with me. Everyone here knows that they’re here to work, but we still make room for humor and fun. The work day can be incredibly long if you don’t make any room for fun.

poor attitudes to great attitudes, creating shop workers who genuinely care. We’ve worked to acquire great people to make that happen and to work together as a team.

WAN: What do you like best about the work that you do?

Carriveau: No one is happy when they’ve had an accident. Our ability to improve our customers’ day is still the best thing. We have two estimators here that are exceptional with the customers and always make everyone feel welcome.

WAN: Who have been the most influential people in your life?

Carriveau: My parents and grandparents taught me how to have a good work ethic and the value of hard work. I’d definitely say that was pretty influential in the path my life took.

WAN: What is the best advice you’ve ever received that’s worth sharing?

Carriveau: If you want to live like no one else, you first have to do what no one else does.

Making sacrifices is sometimes necessary. If you want what no one has you must be willing to do what no one else will.

Optimize Body Shop Sales: Train to Qualify

By Steven Feltovich, Manager of Collision Business Consulting, Sherwin-Williams Automotive Finishes What exactly constitutes “qualifying” potential customers and how should it be applied to the collision repair business? I believe it is a term that is often misused and misunderstood. Too many people immediately determine that “qualifying” customers has to do with whether the customer has the ability to pay for your services. Although that is correct, that does not take into consideration the whole meaning of the term, which has two parts: the customer’s ability to pay for the product or service that your shop offers, and your shop’s ability to fulfill the needs and expectations of the customer. Qualifying customers upfront is vitally important, because not being able to meet the criteria will result in failure both for the shop and the customer.

The key to qualifying customers effectively lies in asking the right questions. It will be well worth spending the time and effort to not only plan which specific questions to ask prospective customers, but also to know what the answers to those questions need to be for your shop’s business relationship with that customer to be successful. It is imperative that your shop does not continue any further into the process if the answers do not meet the shop’s pre-established criteria. Realizing this upfront will help save your shop valuable time and money.

If your front-line staff is prepared to “qualify” customers by knowing the right questions, they will be able to quickly differentiate real prospects for your services from suspects. A prospect will be easy to establish a business relationship with because they truly have a need for your services; they have the authority to make the decision; they have the resources and ability to pay for the product or services; they have a sense of urgency; and they will answer your questions because they are interested in what your company has to offer. Suspects may have a need, but may not have the ability to pay, may not have a deadline and may not be eager to form a business relationship because they anticipate that it is unlikely they will use your company’s services.

According to conventional sales techniques, a potential customer should not be disqualified unless they specifically tell us “no,” and even then they may still be a candidate for our products Summer 2015

or services. However, when we are looking at “qualifying” customers, it is necessary to find out the answers to our questions, even if they do lead us to know that the customer’s decision is “no.” Your shop can be more productive in finding the “right” customers by learning sooner rather than later that your chance of closing a sale with a particular customer is highly unlikely. You need to eliminate customers who will not yield any return on your investment of time, money and energy because they will decide not to use your shop, their insurance company will persuade them to go elsewhere, they do not have the ability to purchase your products or services or they will ultimately be dissatisfied with the finished product that your shop provides them with.

Some examples of effective questions that your front-line staff needs to ask to “qualify”customers are as follows: • What are the three most significant points that will influence your decision of which collision repair shop to use?

• When would you like or need to have your vehicle repair completed by?

• Will you need a rental vehicle during the repair process?

• Is there anyone other than yourself who will be involved in making this decision?

Whence you have determined that your customer is a “qualified” prospect, you don’t just stop there and hope that they make the decision to select your shop. Customers want to feel that their unique wants and needs are addressed by your shop personnel.

Because customers know that many competing shops would like

to have their business, personalization is critical in order to turn prospects into customers, keep them and give them better service than the last time. Simply using the customer’s name is basic personalization. Customers want to have the same “experience” every time they deal with your shop’s staff, regardless of who they are communicating with. Accomplishing this goal requires that collision repair shops have their front-line staff professionally trained through sales workshops. The shop must ensure the development of an internal sales process that becomes a standard for the staff to follow in dealing with customers.

When customers contact you, you gain their appreciation by having the answers they want—and that appreciation can be deepened by supplying additional information and making offers that respond to their needs. Building a better understanding of customer preferences also can aid in up-selling additional repairs and services. The collision repair shops that are most successful in terms of customer closing ratios are those that learn to create solutions for their customers; instead of waiting for the customers to figure it out on their own they offer a complete packaged solution for the customer’s problems related to the accident.
