n behalf of the Alliance of Automotive Service Providers of New Jersey (AASP/NJ), I am thrilled to welcome you to our 40th annual NORTHEAST Automotive Services Show. NORTHEAST 2017 represents 40 years of dedication, hard work and industry support that has enabled AASP/NJ’s flagship event to become the largest regional trade show of its kind.

Several past and present AASP/NJ members had the chance to look back and reflect on the show’s four decades in a recent oral history published in our official magazine, New Jersey Automotive. Even for someone like myself, who has been involved for over 25 years, it was a fascinating look behind the scenes at what it has taken to get to this point in time. As you walk through those doors onto the show floor or into a seminar, trust me when I tell you, you are becoming a part of a storied history that all of us in the automotive service industry should be proud of.

And this year we have once again hit it out of the ballpark. On the show floor you will find just about everything you need to properly equip your shop for the present and the future. Each aisle will be filled with the latest equipment, products and services available. There is so much to see sometimes I don’t even get enough time to take it all in! But if your shop needs it, I promise you will find it at NORTHEAST. In our seminar rooms you will find the industry’s leading speakers and presenters. This year’s slate is led by our “Path to Certification” panel discussion. Throughout the weekend you can find perspectives from OEM representatives, tool and equipment manufacturers as well as shop owners on a topic that is at the forefront of everyone’s minds. THE AMATO AGENCY Thanks to longtime AASP/NJ benefit provider the Amato Agency, a number of Garden State body shops now have a lot more money in their bank accounts.

As the Collision Equipment Company continues to expand its customer relationships and product offerings, Egan maintains a strong commitment to following the trends that are impacting the overall automotive repair field. A regular participant in the Collision Industry Conference (CIC) and the National Auto Body Council (NABC), he considers education and consolidation to be the biggest issues shaping today’s industry.

“There’s a paradigm shift going on in our industry where repairers need to make an investment in equipment because vehicles have changed and OEM certification has become prevalent in the marketplace,” he offers. “I-CAR training is something that shops need, but because of consolidation, we’re seeing that the consolidators don’t want to send their technicians out to facilities and expose them to the ability for somebody else to hire them at those training classes. So they’re looking for a higher level of service for training inside of their facilities, which is all tied to equipment training, certification and the re-investment on behalf of the repairers to be able to work on cars going forward.

“We see consolidation playing a huge part in the industry,” he adds. “Collision repairers who are not part of that movement and are not consolidators or MSOs can survive the transition, but they’re going to have to be able to re-invest in the market. Nationally, collision repairers are going to have to upgrade their equipment and increase the level of training provided to their technicians. We see CE Training as an opportunity going forward for technicians.”

MAXON HYUNDAI-MAZDA For New Jersey parts industry mainstay Rick Weber, building personal, one-on-one relationships with customers is as important today as it was when he first started in the trade back in the early ’80s. Known to Garden State repairers as the longtime parts director at Maxon Hyundai/Mazda in Union, Weber and the Maxon parts department see customers as more than just numbers on an order.

Not surprisingly, this increasingly unique business philosophy has paid off. Currently serving most of New Jersey and parts of New York, Pennsylvania and Staten Island, the Maxon Wholesale Parts Division has built such a strong customer base that they recently had to move into a new warehouse to accommodate increasing sales. Launched in May 2014, the facility boasts 8,000 square feet and $1.25 million in OEM collision and mechanical parts. Thanks to the diligence of Weber’s crew, Maxon was able to make the major transition into its new warehouse without a moment’s interruption in their regular parts services. The professionals who comprise the current Maxon parts team include an assistant warehouse manager known simply as “Mason,” who helps Weber run the general day-to-day operations of the new facility. Parts Manager JP Pasquale oversees the daily service parts operation, while Ken Creasy, Bruce Dias and Hector Carrasquillo offer personalized service on the wholesale phones. Administrative Assistant Pat Brady handles the department’s paperwork, while seven drivers and four warehouse people complete the team.

With his department always in a state of growth, Weber credits Dealer Principal Michael Ciasulli for making the parts operation an ongoing success. “He gives me the tools I need to do the business; he saw this [expansion] as a good move,” Weber says.

Like many popular parts providers, Maxon Hyundai/Mazda is a regular exhibitor at the annual NORTHEAST Automotive Services Show. In Weber’s mind, spending the weekend at NORTHEAST allows him extraordinary access to the clients who make it all possible. “Maybe I see one or two customers on a given day, but I can’t see a lot of those people at one time,” Weber explains. “NORTHEAST gives us the opportunity to see literally thousands of current and potential customers.”

On a broader scale, Maxon Hyundai/Mazda is a participating dealership in the Hyundai Recognized Collision Repair Center program, established by the manufacturer (in partnership with Assured Performance Network) to ensure both independent and Hyundai dealership-owned collision repair centers have the training, tools, equipment and facilities needed to properly repair Hyundai vehicles after they have been involved in a collision.

The dealership is also excited to help shops obtain OEM parts instead of aftermarket reman salvage parts through Hyundai’s recently-announced addition of CollisionLink to the manufacturer’s existing Go Genuine collision conquest program. POLYCRACKER Polycracker is located in Boonton, NJ. For more than 25 years, the company has been a provider of specialty chemicals for the removal of wax, grease, silicones and Armor-All from surfaces to prepare them for fisheye-free coatings and painting. Polycrackewas the first to introduce a water-based chemical in this industry and is still the number one choice.

Most fisheye problems are caused by poly-silicone, the ingredient in all of today’s most durable paint protection systems and waxes. Successful refinishing of treated vehicles requires removal of all traces of these chemicals – Polycracker was designed to do just that.

Plus, Polycracker completely removes oil, grease, lubricants, fingerprints and dirt.

Fisheye eliminators are the not the answer. Adding fisheye eliminator to all paint jobs – “just in case” – can

cause major problems down the road, because fisheye eliminators contain some of the same ingredients as the waxes. Adding fisheye eliminators to paint can make the paint compatible with the wax, but using it can create adhesion problems, or wax residue accumulation.

Clearcoats are even worse. Using eliminator in single stage top coats is a remedy that can be pulled off, but using the chemicals in primers or the basecoats of two- or three-stage finishes can be hazardous. Using eliminator may help you get the base on, but when you apply the clear, you could get thousands of fisheyes.

When that happens, your only chance of saving the job is by adding large doses of eliminator to the clearcoat.

This can mean countless small fisheyes that you will later attempt to color sand and buff out. By doing so, you’re risking slippage (adhesion problems) down the road.

The simple solution is to eliminate fisheye at its source. Use POLYCRACKER before sanding and before painting to ELIMINATE fisheye for good! Please contact us at polycracker@netscape.com.
