What it Means to Me...

I have been involved with AASP-MN since my Dad (Jim Thomas) sat on the mechanical committee over 15 years ago. Ten years before that, I was ripping a 2.5hp Briggs & Stratton from my go kart, cutting tubes for clearance and swapping in a 5hp engine

Since before I can remember, cars have been in my blood and I was fortunate to know my future path at a very young age. During summer break at the ripe age of 14, I would ride into St Paul with my Dad and spend two to three days a week working at Lancer Service (my Dad’s pride and joy). The work I was doing was highly skilled – pushing brooms around, emptying garbage cans and helping with light mechanical duties Although entry level, the education was priceless My Dad started Lancer Service in 1977 and, at some point when I was ready, I was going to buy the business and carry on his legacy.

After graduating high school, I enrolled in the Automotive Service Technology program at Century College In 2004, I came out of Century with extensive mechanical knowledge, my AAS degree and full ASE certification with L1 I immediately joined Lancer’s full-time workforce as a technician By 2007, I was shop foreman, while also taking time to learn more and more about the other aspects of the business. By 2011, I purchased Lancer and my Dad was able

We all struggle with the same problems: Hiring/retaining good employees, keeping up with technology, insurance company issues and more. The best way to battle these issues is by banding together, and that is exactly what the Alliance provides.

to successfully retire As things continued, I opened a second business (CJTunes) where we specialize in building and tuning late-model GM performance vehicles.

This industry drove my Dad’s life and, as a second generation owner, my life as well I attribute much of my success to the individuals I surround myself with As a young owner (27 years old), many of the “senior” AASP-MN members provided me with invaluable insight, guidance and knowledge I spent as much time as possible at the roundtable events, Mech XChange and leadership conferences (maybe some time spent at the pub after), getting as much information as possible This information transformed me from a technician to a well-rounded owner/leader I realized at a young age that if I took the time to “sharpen the saw,” many of the large obstacles would disappear

We all struggle with the same problems: Hiring/retaining good employees, keeping up with technology, insurance company issues and more The best way to battle these issues is by banding together, and that is exactly what the Alliance provides As with anything good, you need to put the effort in to get what you want out, and although being a non-active member still provides advantages, the real strength of this organization is the networking aspect

Why are 20 groups/peer networks so successful?

1 They hold you accountable

2 They surround you with other driven owner/operators and force you to collaborate.

3 They have you goal set and measure your results

All of this is available from the Alliance at a fraction of the cost, so why not participate? We all know the absolute best technicians are great because they know how to use the right tool at the right time; nothing in their box is underutilized We, as leaders, should be no different! I urge everyone to get involved and make the most of your membership.

This industry is changing The consolidation of body shops is just the beginning Ridesharing and fleet service has already begun to reshape our beloved mechanical industry We really have two options: Get bulldozed or start planning for the future.

It is my goal to add strength to not only my shop, but the entire industry I don’t need to explain how much the world of fixing cars means to me, as I am sure it does to many of you reading this, as well It has been good to me; I love everything about it (well most everything) and look forward to embracing the future!!

My name is Carl Thomas and it’s an absolute honor to be your AASP-MN President.

Bill to Ensure Payment for OEM Repair Standards – Derailed

The days leading up to committee deadlines at the legislature are always hectic. That was definitely the case this year for AASP-MN Several members were preparing for a hearing in the House Commerce Committee on the final day for committee action – March 15

The AASP-MN initiative would have made it an unfair insurance settlement practice for an insurer to deny payment of repair procedures called for by the original vehicle manufacturer.

This issue has taken on greater urgency as a result of the Texas lawsuit involving John Eagle Collision Center –in which the repair facility implemented a repair procedure which did not meet the vehicle manufacturer’s guidance The vehicle was subsequently in an accident. The vehicle occupants were severely injured and the repair shop was found to be liable for damages in excess of $30 million

Facing this level of risk, Minnesota repair shops want to follow a vehicle manufacturer’s guidance for repair procedures and should not be denied payment from insurers when the standards are adhered to

This was our 2019 legislative objective, but we were unable to secure the support or even neutrality of the insurance sector We met with insurers and exchanged amendment language but never did come to an agreement This lack of accord cost us a place on the House Commerce Committee agenda – just the evening prior to our scheduled hearing

Having undergone extensive preparation for this issue, we are well positioned to continue this work Discussions with the insurance industry must be renewed. The Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers has voiced their continued support for the AASPMN proposal, as has the Automotive Service Association, Society of Collision Repair Specialists and AASP National We will be spending more time with our bill authors, key committee chairs and House and Senate Commerce Committee members to ensure that they fully understand the importance of this measure to the safety of vehicle owners and the motoring public

We will keep members informed as this work proceeds and we always welcome information about your relationships with legislators in your area

On another front AASP-MN has also closely watched legislation which would amend the salvage title statute – Minn Stat § 168A 151 A proposal to delete reference to “late-model” and “high-value” vehicles has been proposed, requiring most vehicles totaled by an insurance company to receive a salvage title

AASP-MN has not taken a position in support or opposition to the measure but has expressed concern about consumers who own repairable vehicles who would face diminished value by virtue of this proposal

We will continue to watch this proposal if it makes progress during the 2019 session and keep members

informed of any change in the law

And, finally Governor Walz has proposed a number of tax changes in his proposed budget for the 20202021 biennium One change that businesses are concerned about relates to the automatic tax inflation adjustment for business property taxes Governor Dayton signed a tax bill which froze the business property tax at the 2017 level. Governor Walz is proposing to reinstate the inflator, which would continue to drive commercial-industrial taxes toward the top of the corporate tax rates for businesses across the country

Again, we will keep members informed as the tax bill takes shape and report on relevant changes at the close of the 2019 legislative session

Renewed Right to Repair Battle in Massachusetts

The Massachusetts Right to Repair Coalition has introduced legislation in the Commonwealth protecting consumers’ right to own and control the data generated by their vehicle The bill would require new vehicle manufacturers to equip their vehicles with “an inter-operable, standardized and open access platform across all makes and models that is capable of securely communicating all telematics vehicle data in a standardized format via direct data connection to the platform ” The bill would further require that the data be accessible by the owner or lessee of the vehicle through a mobile-based application and upon the authorization of the vehicle owner or lessee, all mechanical data shall be directly accessible by an independent motor vehicle repair facility or franchised dealer.

The proposed legislation seeks to respond to a growing number of vehicle manufacturers requiring their authorization in order to access a vehicle’s on-board diagnostic (OBD) system. While these measures seek to provide cybersecurity protections, each car company is pursuing its own proprietary system, thus threatening to significantly increase tooling costs and grant them significant control over access to vehicle repair information The bill would prohibit the use of any system that restricts access to the OBD port unless the systems are standardized across all makes and models and administered by an entity unaffiliated with a manufacturer

The coalition has launched a Commonwealth-wide grassroots and advertising campaign to educate Massachusetts policymakers, businesses and consumers about the threat that wireless technologies, sometimes referred to as telematics, pose to small business and consumer repair choice The new legislation seeks to amend the Right to Repair law that was approved by Massachusetts voters in 2012 with 86 percent of the vote

Electric & Hybrid Aftermarket Impact

Despite the hype surrounding battery electric vehicles (BEV) and hybrid electric vehicles, their impact on the 2018 U.S. aftermarket has been limited and they will record only minor aftermarket product gains over the next five to 10 years.

Battery electric vehicles reached 3 percent of 2018 new vehicle sales in the U.S., with hybrid electric vehicles sinking to 2 percent of the 2018 market Even combined, they accounted for less than 2.5 percent of all cars and light trucks on U S roads during 2018

Why Companies Are Adopting Subscription Billing Models

Volvo recently announced they will make their cars available on a subscription model, where consumers will pay one fixed fee per month for access to a car, which includes insurance and maintenance

Everything from toothbrushes to flowers is now available with subscription billing

Could you offer some sort of recurring plan to your customers? Here are six reasons to consider offering your customers a subscription:

1 Predictability: When you have subscribers, you can plan what your business needs in the future. For example, the average flower store in America throws out more than half of its inventory each month because it’s too rotten to sell.

H Bloom, a subscription-based flower company that sells flowers to hotels and spas, says it throws out less than 2 percent of its flowers because it can perfectly predict how many flowers are needed to fulfill orders.

2 Eliminate Seasonality: Many businesses suffer through seasonal highs and lows. In fact, a whopping 30 percent of a typical flower store’s revenue comes on Mother’s Day and Valentine’s Day – ultimately leaving them to scramble and make a sale in November By contrast, H Bloom has a steady stream of subscribers that pay each month At Mister Car Wash – where they offer a subscription for unlimited car washes – they receive revenue from customers in November and April even though very few people in the Northeast wash their cars in rainy months

3 Improved Valuation: Recurring revenue boosts the value of your business Whereas most small companies trade on a multiple of profit, subscription-based businesses often trade on a similar multiple of revenue

4 The Trojan Horse Effect: Once you subscribe to a service, you become much more likely to buy other things from the same company. That’s one reason Amazon is so keen to get you to buy subscriptions to things like Prime or Subscribe & Save. Amazon knows that once you become a subscriber, you are much more likely to buy additional products.

5 The Sale That Keeps On Giving: Unlike the transaction business model where you have to stimulate demand through advertising to get customers to buy, with a subscription-based model, you sell one subscription and it keeps giving month after month

6. Data & Market Research: When you get a customer to subscribe, you can start to see their spending and consumption habits This data is the ultimate in market research It’s how Netflix knows which new shows to produce and which to kibosh

ESTIMATING TIPS

Audatex: Two-Stage Setting Override – It is important to note the paint settings on the estimate which can affect the labor calculations. To determine the correct paint profile, reference the vehicle section of the estimate under “Ext. Refinish.”

Per Audatex Estimating Release Notes: Two Stage Setting Override

Audatex now offers an additional choice for default exterior single/two stage setting.

Prior to Audatex Estimating 8 06, AudaVIN color decoding would override the default single/two stage exterior setting from the Admin module This behavior is still the default as AudaVIN properly decodes single/ two/three stage color when option color information is received from the manufacturer

As a new provisioning option, Audatex Estimating now offers a setting that ignores AudaVIN information for the exterior paint and retains the default exterior single/two stage default selection that is set up in the Admin module

All Three Systems: Quick Reference Chart – Repairers may need to extend clear coat to the nearest natural breaking point/panel edge to maintain a refinish warranty on repair work A chart of included/notincluded operations related to this topic can be found here: http://degweb org/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/ Quick-Reference-extension-of-clear-coat jpg

All Three Systems: Quick Reference Chart for Bonded Glass – Provides guide of included and not-included operations for bonded glass in various repair situations: http://degweb.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/quickreference-bonded-glass.jpg.

Always refer to OEM repair instructions for correct supplies required to install per OEM documentation.

Mitchell: 2.5 Clear Cap Exclusion – According to Mitchell, for new, undamaged parts, a total of no more than 2.5 hours should be necessary to perform the following four included clear coat refinish operations:

• Mix material

• Clean and tack surface

• Apply material

• Clean equipment

This calculation does not apply to bumper covers, ground effects, special package equipment, interior edges, jambs, entryways, undersides and additional time that may be required for repaired and/or used panels It does not apply to complete vehicle refinish And it is not intended to determine the quantity or cost of materials required for the application of clear

Note: The estimating databases are all intended to be used as a GUIDE ONLY - it is important to remember that the auto body professional performing the repair is in a position to thoroughly inspect, diagnose and identify the methodology and their unique cost of the vehicle damage repair You can view these tips and others on the DEG website,WWW DEGWEB ORG

Freon R-1234yf: Are You Ready?

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you might have heard about the new regulations and requirements for R-1234yf usage Not sure? Well, it’s time you crawled out from under that rock and got ready for some of these new regulations that will affect you and your profession

SAE standard J2843, for “R-1234yf (HFO-1234yf) recovery equipment for refrigerants used in mobile air conditioning systems,” establishes the minimum equipment requirements for the recovery, recycling and recharging of R-1234yf This regulation covers all of the refrigerant that has been removed, filtered and reused for any mobile air conditioning system designated as an R-1234yf system

During the past four years, R-1234yf has been adopted by automakers before the 2021 mandate Many vehicles with R-1234yf are now out of warranty Sooner or later, one of your customers will bring one to your shop

Don’t worry, R-12 and R-134a will not be phased out, but they will be regulated and taxed heavily This is good news for shops because the days of DIY A/C repair in a can are numbered

Requirements

Most shops have been cruising along with their R-134a recovery machines for the past 20 years As long as it was making money and pushing refrigerant, not much thought was given to the machine’s overall condition Of course, some shops make it a habit of changing the filter on a regular basis or at least once at the beginning of the season, but for others it’s not on their “to-do” list at all.

The biggest difference with the new generation of machines is automation of the recovery, recycle and recharge process Many of these functions are carried out without any technician intervention In the past, all of these processes were left up to the shop or technician and were loosely monitored The latest requirements for the new recovery machines have taken the decision making out of the operator’s hands and have taken control of a lot of these concerns when determining the integrity of the system If there is a problem, the machine stops the process and alerts the operator This includes if the machine detects a problem with the purity of the refrigerant in the system

Refrigerant identification is a big concern because of the small capacities of R-1234yf that are required for newer systems Some newer systems require only 12 to 14 ounces of refrigerant to fully function. Any contamination or blended refrigerants can quickly impair the thermal transfer.

Identify, Identify, Identify

All recovery machines should meet the J2843 and J2927 or J2912 government standards SAE J2927 is for built-in refrigerant identifiers (Recovery machines that can service both R-134a and R-1234yf systems are covered by SAE J3030 ) New SAE standards for recovery, recycling and recharging machines require integration with a refrigerant identifier This is to avoid cross-contamination Most machines just determine the purity

Even if an A/C machine can identify a refrigerant, the downtime and loss of productivity can cost your shop money With most new SAE standard A/C machines costing

more than $5,000, it makes sense to prevent a contaminated vehicle or cylinder from being connected to your A/C machine A refrigerant analyzer can be an effective “firewall” to protect your machines and refrigerant inventory An analyzer can also be used as a diagnostic tool if a vehicle has compressor function, but is not able to effectively cool the vehicle.

Another benefit of an external refrigerant identification tool is to make sure your cylinders for refrigerants are what they claim to be. Some suppliers may blend or recover refrigerants from salvaged vehicles These mixes may include R-1234yf, R-134a and R22 In some cases, hydrocarbons (like propane) have been found Some refrigerant may also contain excessive amounts of moisture

The other factor that might cause a system to be contaminated is the human component based on the expense The cost of the new refrigerants means there is a greater chance of a “bootleg” R-1234yf, R-134a and blended refrigerants getting into the marketplace

Filter Servicing

In the past, filter replacement on older machines was often neglected or, in some cases, completely ignored However, the new standards have stepped up the priority of filter replacement to a point that you will not be able to ignore it or overlook it anymore. To meet this new mandate for moisture and contaminant removal, the filter must be replaced after 331 pounds of refrigerant has been filtered through the machine
