1.1 THEME - AREA OF INTEREST Iconic structures enhance the beauty of a space and add value which changes its importance.

Architecture has always been a critical element in the field of tourism and has acted as an attraction point for tourists. Similarly, tourism helps in promoting architectural monuments and brings them to the front of the world as a place to explore.

1.2 NEED AND MOTIVATION Over time architectural structures are gaining importance as an icon to represent a place, era, or story. Especially in India if we see more than context or geography, historical monuments or structures play a major role in making that state or area representative in front of the world.

The beauty, details, and architectural elements always make me keen to learn about it and the narrative that it had as a reason. How it helps in the economic, natural, and cultural growth of the country would also be the factor associated with it as there's a huge growth noticed in this sector with the development of this iconic architourism.

1.3 AIM AND OBJECTIVES The main outcome expected is to create a space where visitors or viewers can learn and know about the importance of iconic architectural structures and how they play an important major role in assisting the identification of a city, state, or country.

1.5 LIMITATIONS The limitation for me in this project would be to sum up the importance of all the iconic structures in India and to prove its relevance and maintain its authenticity.

1.6 METHODOLOGY This project is based on portraying the value and art of history with this tallest statue in world, the STATUE OF UNITY. This project would continue with the language and purpose SOU had and has. As architectural history has a great impact and value at world level it is important to take each step in thorough detail.

2.1 INTRODUCTION With moving time and growth in Architectural value, the historical monument and structures are also getting a new face to add on to that value. People are learning and looking at it with a new perspective rather than just a building. Now the details, narration and purpose of it are also looked at with an aesthetic vision also. Uniting this purpose and importance is portrayed through museum, galleries, archives, etc.

2.2 WHAT IS MUSEUM ?

A museum is built form used to showcase the collection and exhibit different valuables and is a public building funded by different authorities like The Government, Public bodies, Not to profit organizations, Non-governmental organization, etc.

It is guided by Board of Directors and managing bodies. It is important to look at this aspect while serving the purpose of museum design to fulfill the need of end users or visitors.

2.4 WHAT IS MUSEUM OF HISTORY ?

It is an building built with a purpose which will showcase the history with different lenses like collectibles, artifacts, galleries display the story, technology like audio visuals, interactive kiosk etc. It starts with a journey which will take a user to all the era of architecture and its context.

Different architectural elements highlights the value to it while it creates an experience for the user.

2.5 ROLE OF MUSEUM IN SHOWCASING HISTORY Museums have collections that are not specific to a single perspective. History can get biased when viewed from a single lens. It could be through art or books or music written by a set of groups or subgroups. However, there are always differing opinions and sides. And it is in museums that all perspectives find a place. 2.6 MUSEUM: INDIAN SCENARIO The idea or development of museum in india has been started recently with the regard of museum movement in India. There were few major factors which helped in development and growth of museum.

The development of museum in india can be divided into five major phase: ●

Formative Phase (under Colonial Rulers) 1796 – 1858

Second Phase (The Victorian era) 1858-1899

Third Phase (the era of Lord Curzon and John Marshall) 1899-1928

Since the 20th century, there has been an increasing involvement of indians in the museum. It is considered as a place of knowledge and research and at the same time, it is also known as the ajooba ghar by common people.

2.7 MUSEUM: CONTEXTUAL SCENARIO The context has a huge impact of STATUE OF UNITY which consists of a museum which showcases the life and struggle of the sardar vallabhbhai patel. It helps as an factor for this project of museum to create a trail uniting the cluster of same built purpose. It has a great story portraying the vision of sardar patel into reality. It blends with the lavish green plane which is surrounded around great narmada river.

Its design revolves around different galleries each showcasing a unique purpose of it.

The British constructed double-storey barracks housing museums, quarters, and godowns. These barracks with high ceiling, arched corridors, and large staircases are made of yellow and red bricks.

4.1 PLANNING OF MUSEUM Museum varies in size, type, purpose, material, etc, therefore program specified features and context should be narrowed and listed when concept is developed. There are many museums employed by large amount of staff, experts and qualified workers who can manage and curate the collections and valuable at museums.

Due to the variations in types of museum, there are no standard formulas for planning and area formulation for a museum. It was important to understand the museum’s mission for creating interesting and unique layouts. A journey and experience for the visitors helped in creating a better layout which helps them to interact in tangible and intangible aspects.

A warm welcome for the visitors with the overview of museum was the first step. Different directional signages are planned to guide a better way for the visitors for mess free circulation.

A clear flow part would help them to walk easily which are provided with open spaces at specific intervals for free wandering and exploring.

4.1.1 SPATIAL PLANNING Because there is no standard formula for museum design, the spaces are planned which relates to one another and are differentiated for public and staff circulation.

4.2 GUIDELINES FOR MUSEUM DESIGN

4.2.1 ACCESSIBILITY 4.2.1.1 APPROACH AND ENTRANCE As mentioned earlier, the hazard free approach helps the visitors to get a clear way to move around and easily accessible. Thought of universal axis for the disabled is kept while designing the entrance and access.

4.2.1.2 CIRCULATION Specified ways are planned so that the visitors can use the same ways even if they are disabled or not.

4.2.1.3 STAFF While planning a staff area also the universal axis is thought through which makes an easy access for them also.

4.3 CIRCULATION The key part of the user experience was how the visitors flow and circulate through the museum. Would it be easy for them to navigate? Would it tell a story? Questions like this helped in establishing how the visitors will experience the building and progress through the museums.

Proper guidance and signages plays a major role in creating a circulation plan for museum because it would guide the visitors to go on the suggested route to get a better experience and journey of the museum.

4.4 DISPLAY AND COMMUNICATION The display of exhibits and interactive kiosk are planned thoroughly for the better experience

There are many varieties of mediums that will be used to facilitate communication of the collectibles to the visitors.

Depending on the type of exhibit, the importance of plenty of space between exhibit and visitors is focused so that they can have a clear look without being crowded by visitors.

Interactive displays are placed for user to explore and learn more about the topic and content displayed. Lighting also plays an important role in displaying in a better aspect.

4.5 STORAGE Specified storage spaces will help in storing the valuable artifacts and collectibles which would be only accessible by the staff and are not open to visitors. Storage areas are designed as per the requirement of the museum.

4.6 PUBLIC FACILITIES AND RESTROOMS Restrooms are easy to locate for visitors to find it as they need some time for rest while moving in the museum. It will be equipped with all basic sanitary requirements. Cafes are also located at both starting and end point of it for the refreshments visitors need.

4.7 LIGHTING The lighting design plays an important role in designing of a museum as there are certain specified watt of light required in museum for better display. Ratio between natural and artificial light is critical criteria as it can make or take the beauty of display.

It also creates a mood and experience for the visitors while they pass through the exhibits.

Much change in intensity of light makes an experience uncomfortable. A lighting specialist helps in designing it in a better way.

4.8 CLIMATE, ENVIRONMENT AND TEMPERATURE Collectibles in museum are sensitive to the fluctuations in temperature, humidity, etc. therefore it is important to control the climatic conditions of it in design and should remain constant.

4.9 SECURITY For the security purposes, less numbers of entry points are planned for access and are monitored thoroughly. Entrance and exits are critical junctions from the security purpose. All the visitors will be properly checked and scanned.

For security reasons, collectibles are well protected in museums by different security gadgets.

Even if it is a single storeyed building an emergency exists are provided in case of emergency or accidents.

4.10 SITE AREA A ratio of 60:40 is used while taking 30000 sq, mt of an area with the built of 6000 sq. mt, approx. the built mass is kept less for more open circulation and ventilation.

5.1 SITE INTRODUCTION Site is located on multiple contours as it consists small hills and valleys with dry barren land condition. It sets its location in hot and dry climatic conditions.

Pic 5.1 Maps showing site from macro to micro level The site is located in proximity of STATUE OF UNITY which is the tallest statue in the world and it is attracting huge tourist rush. It is located near a great auromic landscaped garden name valley of flowers with holy narmada river.

The surroundings have many other attractions and tourist spots like Sardar Sarovar Dam, the scenic zarwani falls and other attractions in Rajpipla.

It has narmada on the southern face with view of world's tallest monument, THE STATUE OF UNITY. After the SOU development area is emerging with various development and landscape. Site boundary shares its face with TENT CITY NARMADA 2.

SOU was a tribute to sardar patel for his vision to give farmers their rights back and provide them water for the farming at the bank of Narmada. Keeping that vision as a bigger picture current government asked farmers for their used farming equipment for making the statue and eventually 5000 tons of metal was collected.

Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, India's first deputy prime minister, had the idea for the Sardar Sarovar project. After conducting a research on the use of the Narmada river's water, which flowed through the states of Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat and into the Arabian Sea, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru lay the project's foundation stone on April 5, 1961.

The method for sharing Narmada water across the three states of Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Madhya Pradesh was the subject of a project study created for the dam. A Narmada Water Dispute Tribunal (NWDT) was established in 1969 to decide the project's fate after failed discussions.

6.1 DESIGN IDEA AND CONCEPT ICONIC INDIAN HERITAGE STRUCTURE 321 to 185 B.C.E

MAURYA DYNASTY There were pillars, statues, structures made of rock, and structures like stupas, viharas, and chaityas that had several uses. The majority of his architecture was composed of wood.

The inscriptions on the Ashoka-built pillars are decorated with elephant, bull, and lion motifs.

4th to 6th CENTURY

GUPTA DYNASTY The first intentionally constructed Buddhist and Hindu temples, which developed from the older tradition of rock-cut shrines. These temples were often devoted to all of the Hindu gods and were lavishly adorned with towers and intricate decorations.

5th to 7th CENTURY

CHALUKYA DYNASTY The architecture and art of the Chalukyas were acknowledged. Over a thousand temples have been constructed by them. They constructed temples that are outstanding examples of Vesara style architecture.

13th to 16th CENTURY

DELHI SULTANATE A distinctive style of art and architecture emerged while Delhi served as the base. The art and architecture of the Delhi Sultanate showed a never before seen combination of Islamic and Indian influences.Calligraphy, manuscript illumination, miniature painting, pottery, metallurgy, and architecture were all forms of art at this time.

A combination of geometric, floral, and other detailed patterns can also be seen in the art.

16th to late 17th CENTURY

MUGHAL EMPIRE In Mughal architecture, Hindu, Persian, and Islamic influences exist alongside one another. Many structures commonly have large bulbous onion-shaped domes, which are frequently bordered by four smaller domes. .The Mughals built gardens in the Islamic style known as "Mughal gardens." It was inspired by Persian gardens.

4th to 6th CENTURY

BRITISH EMPIRE In India in the late 19th century, British architects mostly used the revivalist architectural style known as "Indo-Saracenic," especially in public and government buildings during the British Raj. The architecture of the British colonial era plays a significant role in both the past and present of the country and is a historical fact of the Indian subcontinent.

1947 CURRENT

INDIA AT 75 We maintain the designs of Franco Swiss modernist, Corbusier, as well as Indo Saracenic British railway engineers and architects.

The geometric shapes that take benefit from concrete's potential, a new indigenous language of brick and concrete based on social, functional, and climatic considerations, and the bold articulation of structural elements are only a few examples of the ideas that emerged during the Post-Independence period which express the current architecture of India.

The concern about showcasing the Importance of historic architecture on tourism industry and current scenario gets resolved through the design development in this project.

Why people are getting attracted towards this historic buildings and trying to learn about it came up as an idea which lead to this process of creating a experiential space which unites the history of indian architecture and shows the value of same.

The benefit of this project being in the proximity of statue of unity has played a major role in developing a architecture language which merges with it and also adds it as an part of the great SOU.
