LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Fashion. Education. Community. Here we are once again at THE fall fashion event of the year…Phoenix Fashion Week at Talking Stick Resort. Each and every season I get so excited to share our fastgrowing brand with the 1,000’s of fashionistas attending our week-long calendar of events filled with Fashion, Education and Community activations. Like clockwork each and every season…we also get so many questions like, why do we this, how do we do this, and what is our end goal? Well… Our mission is to Push Arizona Fashion Forward! What exactly does that mean? It means that since the beginning, Team Phoenix Fashion Week set the bar high within the Arizona fashion industry and we have been raising that same bar every year. We began as a oneday celebration that has grown into a sustainable year-round fashion business producing (12) different fashion events in (12) different locations around Arizona. How Did We Do It? We clearly defined who we were and who we were not. We were definitely about the ‘Business of Fashion’ first and foremost. We definitely were not going to listen to the naysayers. We are clearly about helping emerging designers build sustainable and successful fashion brands. We clearly were never going to give up. We were 100% about improving on our mistakes and we were never afraid to try again. In

other words, our commonsense approach and relentless work ethic forged our way to becoming the leading fashion industry event in the Southwest. Your Best or Nothing! Brand partner Mercedes Benz inspired this kind of thinking amongst our team. It is true, when you really know who you are and when you give your best effort day in and day out in the pursuit of your goals, you naturally push everything and everyone around you forward. This is the ‘secret to our sauce.’ That mindset and high bar expectation is why we believe designers from around the globe seek us out to showcase their collections on our runway every October. We know that is why national brands want to align with the Phoenix Fashion Week brand. In real time, we are watching the tide turn, Arizona is rapidly moving fashion forward. So, What’s Next? We are launching our unique ‘Emerging Designer Bootcamp’ online to 1,000’s of designers via our education platform, we are launching an ‘All Things Fashionable’ robust, e-commerce website, we are consulting, partnering and financing our curated emerging fashion brands for success! In other words, we will continue to push Arizona Fashion Forward. Not bad for a brand that began as a one-day celebration. Come join us!

Forget New York and Paris—Fashion Weeks Are Found From Seattle to Stockholm Not to Mention Hoboken, Hong Kong and All Over the Map By Tony Case

T

he fashion forward are not limited to the runways of Paris, Milan and New York. Welcome to Fashion Week—in Hoboken. As in New Jersey. Also, Seattle, Tampa, Phoenix, Austin, Brooklyn and Omaha.

Naturally, fashion weeks have sprung up in international capitals associated with style, design and luxury living—among them, Dubai, Stockholm and Hong Kong. But places as far-flung as Little Rock, Nashville, even St. Charles, Mo., have also launched their own franchises to bring business and buzz to local designers and retailers. And brands like Cadillac, T-Mobile, Red Bull and Peroni have signed on as sponsors. “With big global fashion powerhouses taking their shows on the road—Vuitton in Palm Springs, Chanel in Dallas—it’s not surprising every town in America has caught the fashion bug,” said Stellene Volandes, executive style director of Town & Country. Doing good is at the core of many of these events. Omaha Fashion Week partnered with SAC Federal Credit Union, which is marketing credit products for designers and retailers. Phoenix Fashion Week benefits cancer charities. And while modest apparel is the hallmark of Tampa’s Christian Fashion Week, the festival also promotes ethical labor and manufacturing practices. Just don’t look for Hoboken Vogue anytime soon. “As far as real influence in the fashion world, their power has yet to be seen,” said Volandes. And yet, she also pointed out that Los Angeles Fashion Week, which started out small, may well end up in the big leagues of couture.

MODEL OF THE YEAR

This year’s ‘Model of the Year’ Competition, powered by Leidan Mitchell - Model Citizen, MUZE Beauty and Lash Affair by J. Paris, was (3) months of fierce fun for our Top Model hopefuls! After over 200 models tried out at our Model Search in June, we narrowed down the competition to our Top 40. These ‘Model of the Year’ Top 40 male and female models have been competing in various challenges to strengthen their skills and prepare them for industry success, including:

Challenge #1: Headshot – Our Top 40 models were transformed with beautiful natural looks at the Model Makeover Event hosted by Leidan Mitchell/Model Citizen + Muze Beauty, before working their angles infront of the camera for photographer Romen Cole for the best headshot. Winners: Khayla + Greyson Challenge #2: Print Challenge – These Top 40 models brought their A-Game for the Print Challenge presented by Muze Beauty, including 4 themed shoots shot by photographers Romen Cole + Nader Abushhab and styled by Ashley Paige, Nuvia Magdahi, Jessica Fierro, and Fanny Phillips. Challenge #3: Runway – In conjunction with PHXFW’s emerging designer fall collection preview, the Top 40 models walked the runway at Shop Garment District in August. The best performance of the night went to Amanda + Sean

Challenge #4: The Agency Arizona Interview - One of the most life changing meetings a model may experience is an interview with a modeling agency. To prepare them for this future opportunity, The Agency Arizona staged mock interviews for each Top 40 model, where they were evaluated for their professionalism, portfolio and presentation. Winners: Amber May + Milan Challenge #5: Social Media – Announced at PHXFW on Friday October 6, this challenge incorporates the relevance of digital media in the fashion industry by creating a Facebook album with each of the model’s best shots. The Top 40 models are challenged to effectively market themselves via social media and compete for the most “likes.” Challenge #6: Phoenix Fashion Week – These models will be judged during the three days of fashion week runway shows, based on their previous challenges, runway performance, star presence, professionalism and photo quality.
