Message from Dr. James: Head of School Dear NIVA Family, WASC Updates

After a lot of great work from our stakeholders, our self-study document is almost complete! The self-study process is a time for reflection on all aspects of school-life. It is a time for us to celebrate our many successes, and it is a time for us to locate areas of improvement and develop plans to address those areas. We have made a lot of progress as a school community since the last WASC visit, as we look forward to sharing those achievements with the WASC Visiting Committee in November 2022. We are hoping for a full on-site visit from the WASC team. That way, they will have the opportunity to fully experience all the wonderful things about NIVA, in person. We are also fully prepared for either a hybrid visit or an online visit.

I am so looking forward to another week full of exciting activities for the children !

Class: G1G Teacher: Mrs. Chanya Park TA: Ms. Phonprapha Mangamnerd (Gift) Dear Parents, We have been gradually increasing opportunities for students to work with their peers this week. As emergent and transitional writers, they get to express their ideas through drawings and short sentences using high-frequency words we learned in class. We also start to incorporate the think, pair, and share concept. Classroom jobs were also assigned this week for students to help build a sense of community and interdependence. It is so interesting to see them take their jobs very seriously!

Class: G2 Teacher: Mr. Patrick Guerin TA: Mr. Vachira Viseschart (Palm) Dear Parents & Caregivers, This week in our English classes your children learnt about ‘Compare and Contrast’. Last week we read Henry and Mudge, a story about a boy and his pet dog. This week we started reading All In The Family, a story about different kinds of animal families. We had to compare Mudge with an animal from the second story and tell about the differences and likenesses. In Math we had some fun using manipulatives to show our understanding of, ‘100’s, 10’s, and 1’s placement, from our Counting To 100 unit. The students are also learning more about responsibilities with the Classroom Jobs, which we started last week. Each week we rotate jobs, so every student will get a chance to be a leader in one of the job roles.

Class: G4 Teacher: Mr. Junior Antoine Dear Parents/Guardians and Students,

This past week, our students got an opportunity to practice the various science lab roles that they will be using during science experiments throughout the year. It is important for them to understand that although they each have their own individual responsibilities, they need to figure out how to work together to complete a task. This week, students were able to design and build an obstacle course that would allow a marble to travel for the longest amount of time by using items that were found around the school such as cardboard, PVC tubing, tape, and anything else they could think of.

Class: G5N Teacher: Ms. Jillian Iwanuk Dear NIVA Families, Grade five has jumped into academics feet first! The pictures below show the serious business of learning how to write. Academic language takes 5-7 years to develop. Moreover, academic writing is the most challenging aspect of language so it’s no wonder our students are taking this soInseriously!gradefive, we follow a workshop approach. This means that students learn strategies and skills over time with lots and lots of independent writing time to practice! At the end of this quarter, all fifth grade students will have a beautiful story from their own life. This week, however, students have been working on increasing their writing stamina and they have made it to writing for twenty minutes without stopping! This is a huge point of pride and I can’t wait to see their improvement! Keep up the GREAT work, grade five! Ms.Sincerely,Jillian

Secondary Class News and Activities Secondary Senior Assistant Name: Alexander de Guzman Dear Secondary School Parents, A warm greeting to all our beloved parents and students! It has been a fruitful week with fun and exciting ECA activities for all secondary schools. Check this out!

Class: G6 Teacher: Mr. Derek Iwanuk (Mr. I) Hello NIVA Families! I hope you had a fabulous week as we did. We are now in full swing here in quarter one and have just completed our short story unit for grade six. This week we read H.G.Wells classic short story “A Treasure in the Forest '' and our activity was for students to complete a book cover using Canva. We have some very talented artists in Grade 6 and I was impressed with the effort put into the activity. We have our unit test on Monday, so on Friday we did some review including the Kagan Learning strategy “Quiz-Quiz-Trade” which allows students to simultaneously become the teacher as well as the student. Each student wrote two comprehension questions about information we covered and then quizzed each other. When they were finished, they switched their cards and found another student to quiz. That’s about it! Keep working hard, Gryphons and I’ll see you Monday! :)

Class: G7 Teacher: Ms. Aghalya Selva Rajoo DearTheParents,Grade7 students had another successful week. Students have started to learn about the History and cultures of North Africa, Southwest Asia and Central Asia. They were given a mini project to work on this week which was to do research about the environmental problems faced in the Aral and Caspian Sea. Attached below is one of the posters that a group of students worked on. I am proud of their constant improvement and I'm looking forward to more exciting projects to work on with the students. Till next week!

This week has been amazing ,I cant wait to see what the rest of the school year has in store for Thankus. you for your patience with us!

Class: G10 Teacher: Ms. Jelt Maiden Tangonan-Esteves Dear Parent, This week was focused on Lab activities and ECA. For Grade 7, students had to learn outside the classroom in which they worked with their group in classifying their samples according to their Physical Properties. For Grade 10 and 11, an introduction and summary of the properties of water were observed. ECA “Science of Spice” had the first meeting where students identified and observed the variety of spices prepared. It was a productive week, indeed. Until next time!

Class: G11 Teacher: Ms. Roxana Fugellie Hello there! This week in Chemistry class students began learning about the atomic structure and information provided by the periodic table. To make these complex ideas easier for them to comprehend, they created 3D models using recycled materials to provide a physical representation of the structure of an atom. The creation of 3D objects helps in information retention and engages students through active learning. Until next time!

Class: G12 Teacher: Mr. Tyler Mulvaney Dear Parents, The school felt really empty without the Grade 12s on Monday - thankfully it only lasted one day. They returned to school with their normal, vibrant energy which was welcomed by all. This week, the senior students finalized their calander proposal for events that they are hoping to host for the rest of the year - they worked exceptionally hard and have come up with some great Withinideas.theclass, the students also conducted self and peer assessments about their leadership styles as they develop themselves as the leaders of the school. They then had to turn these assessments into magazine covers that represent their best leadership qualities. Naturally, they did Finally, brilliantly.wehave booked our bonding camp for September 12 - 15, 2022. I am so excited for this and look forward to updating you.

This week, students learned the pool from listening to fairy tales. The music sounds like a vowel sound with a fun way to compose the music. They reviewed the vowels learned along with the worksheets on the previously learned vowels to assess reading cognition. To help the kids, we wrote simple words for them.

Departments News and Activities THAI LANGUAGE DEPARTMENT

Suchittra Chaiaue (Kru Oil) Thai Teacher Sa watdee ka! This week is the first week of Secondary Section ECA classes. I was impressed by the lectures, teaching, and cooperation between students and teachers. For Thai dance, students learned beautifully and delicately. We will follow all performances from this group of students at school events. Thank you. Minlada Songklod (Kru Ying) Thai Teacher สวัสดีค่ะ

In the Thai language classes, the children were very happy because it is the only class where everyone can fully speak Thai. We talk and share knowledge about the lesson content. We read, speak, and write until the end of class. One student asked” why time runs out so fast?. I want the Thai language to have 3 periods!” I am glad that kids love the Thai language. In ECA activities for high school level, we have returned to practice Thai music in preparation for the activities that will be held throughout the school year. I am secretly excited for the children, because this year the school plans to hold a grand event in every activity. We have to train hard and I will have to have my instruments ready…and snacks as well!

ManidaThai(KruJansuwanJook)Teacher สวัสดีค่ะ

This week, we completed chapters at various levels and took exams between chapters. The high school students were invited to the flagpole every morning and grade 12 led the morning anthem every day. We go down to train students to show courage and respect for their own country. At the end of the week there were games to collect extra points. It was an all-round knowledge game in which children have fun helping each other and think as a team by using cartoon worksheets to choose the correct answer. There are question from geography, culture, art, places, food and the culture of Thailand.

Ms. Daria Caraus Art Teacher

Hello everyone, We are working hard in practicing singing as well as listening skills. To maximize their learning capability in music. Many of our students need to understand their role as a student! Our class pace is going slower to make sure all students can work along with each other as a group. In KG classes, we did well so far in catching the rhythm and following instructions. Their listening skills have been improved from the previous week, and will be observed again in the following week. We started our class with fun action songs before we sat down and sang together!

Grade 11-12 are restoring an old elementary school project to give it a second life. Our summer school students (Grade 1-4) created a great paper mache Hot air balloons and now seniors are helping with polishing the details. Amazing collaboration! Also, I am happy to announce our ECA class for Art and Painting for all secondary students who wish to learn how to paint. The first project will be dedicated to landscape painting and we will be learning how to use acrylic on canvas!

SCIENCE DEPARTMENT MS. ROXANA Head of DepartmentScience Greetings from the Science Department, This week’s department goal was to make abstract concepts taught in science accessible to students. How can we make these concepts tangible? By using manipulatives and analogies. The physical act of moving pieces and making 3D models creates connections between the tangible and intangible. Lastly, the use of analogies helps link new concepts to a familiar scenario making complex ideas easier to comprehend. Until next time! MS. JELT What a productive week we had! The smiles, laughter, and exchanges of ideas were precious this week. To more learning adventures next week! MS. AGHALYA We have had another successful week! We had students coming into our office to play chess and also for support class. This week the Grade 6 students had a fun time creating their spaghetti/marshmallow tower. The goal of this activity was to build the most stable tower and also to build team working skills among the students. MR. BROWN Yet another spectacular week! And we ain't’ even reached the peak! Business Economics&teacher Hello Oncethere!again I would like to remind the NIVA business students about the Dragons den competition, Bangkok which will be coming up soon. Students are requested to work on their business plan. Moreover I will be sharing some business week pictures of last year and Looking forward to see and hear some exciting business pitch idea! Mr. Wong Fair and square!

This is the key point learned by elementary students as they evaluate what is fair and what is not fair in the situations that they face in life. From receiving presents for birthdays and sharing their food, students learnt how to share what they have with their friends. On the other hand, the higher grades learnt about the theories behind the utopia suggested by Plato, discussing why such concepts are ideal and why it is less than ideal to live in a society that is devoid of property ownership, family interests, and private interests to a man’s duty to the community. Lastly, we are training students that are interested to bring honor to the school for the upcoming badminton tournaments, but also after the tournament, to maintain an active lifestyle.
