NIVA WEEKLY NEWS February 20th, 2023 Volume 1. Issue 27 This Week’s Cover: We are Fully Accredited by WASC until 2029
Dear NIVA Family, WASC - Full 6-Year Accreditation
We are excited to share the news that NIVA has received a full 6-year accreditation from WASC. We received our accreditation because of the strong commitment by the school’s owners, the NIVA Board, and everyone in the NIVA community to doing what is best for students and student learning. The WASC Visiting Committee were very impressed by everyone they met. Likewise, we were honored to have the members of the WASC Visiting Committee offer their thoughtful and constructive feedback. They were a truly professional team of educators.
WASC accreditation assures parents that NIVA offers the community quality education as assessed by a prestigious, world-renowned, independent organization. Accreditation also validates the integrity of our school’s transcripts, and this is critical for university acceptance.
Students can be assured that everything we do at NIVA is student-focused and that we strive to meet the individual learning needs of every student in our school.
As we move forward, we are committed to making consistent and significant progress towards the completion of our action plans and fully incorporating our schoolwide learning outcomes in all areas of our school. Although we have achieved accreditation, our work continues. In the words of WASC Executive Vice President, Dr. Marylin George, “Accreditation happens every day.” It is with that mindset that we approach each new day.

Dear NIVA Family,
I am very excited to announce that we are working to make NIVA a healthier school. Starting today, we served fresh carrots. We will be focusing on giving the students better snacks between classes. Healthy snacks help manage kids' hunger and boost nutrition. Then when they go back to class, they have the proper nutrients to help them focus in class and do their school work. Children who snack on healthy foods perform better in school and we will set up our students up for success.
We look forward to continuing our successful snacks throughout the year. Thank you for all your support and guidance.

Last week was full of surprises and celebrations, as always! We had a petting zoo where students were able to observe and feed animals while using their knowledge about animal structures (Science). Additionally, we celebrated Valentine's Day by creating love cards for our parents. Some of the cards were really emotional, and I hope you liked yours! We also had fun playing card games and using our math and science skills. Lastly, we focused on practicing opinion writing, and I am amazed at how quickly our students are progressing. Dear Parents/Guardians and Students,
This week, our 4th grade students got a lot of practice in conflict resolution. For their social studies projects, students had to write a “Dear Abby” letter. “Dear Abby” is a newspaper column where readers with a problem ask Abby for advice on how to resolve the issues. This week, individual students wrote anonymous letters to “Abby.” Then, in groups they were handed one of the letters written by their peers and they had to act as Abby by offering possible solutions to the problems. The key here is that the solutions must always be respectful and safe. Check them out working in the pictures below!

Dear Parent,
Valentine’s Day happened! Some of us received flowers, a few of us were given chocolates and small gifts, and many of us were lucky enough to have heart-shaped stickers on our shirts to remind us of who was thinking of us on that day. It was a lovely February 14th!
The Grade 8s have also been spending some time outdoors during lunch time playing soccer (football) and we have been enjoying the dry weather before the rainy season hits.
More updates to follow soon!

Dear Parent,
I am pleased to share with you the latest news from our homeroom and business studies class. This week, our students have been busy learning and engaging in various activities. On Valentine's Day, some of our Grade 9 students - Aya, Amber, Wasina, and Althea - gave a heartwarming performance during the secondary lunch break. They brought smiles to the faces of their fellow students and teachers with their musical talent and cheerful attitudes. It was a lovely way to celebrate the day and spread some positivity around the school.
In our Business studies class, Grade 9 students have been learning about Partnership businesses and the process of preparing a partnership deed. As part of their learning, they were tasked with creating their own partnership deed and agreeing to its terms by signing it. It was an excellent opportunity for our students to practice their communication and negotiation skills while also learning the legal aspects of forming a partnership.
Thank you for your continued support, and please do not hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or concerns.

Love is in the air
This week we celebrated Valentine’s Day. Once again, the seniors pulled together and played an instrumental part in the event.
The students created and took charge of the decorating of the cafeteria - and it looked beautiful. Over and above that, several seniors joined forces with other grades to entertain our students during lunch with some beautiful musical performances. Once again, these students continue to impress me with their resolve and creativity.
I would also like to thank the grade 11 students for their effort in making and selling various beautiful items on the day. Well done!

A meaningful week has come and gone!
This week we focused on a new chapter in our middle school Chinese class: clothes. We combined colors and clothes and practiced listening and speaking together. Starting this Q3, students will have 2-3 listening practice sessions per week where they will reinforce their listening and speaking practice. In ECE, we started to learn numbers in K1 Chinese, and every day we sing and play games, so that every child can build their knowledge through music and games.
On top of that, our ECA program has officially started! This Quarter our Art Club will integrate art techniques and world cultures. Students have created their artwork out of beans, amazing!
Of course, dear parents, if you would like to check your student's grades, they are updated every Friday in the renweb system, so if you have any questions, please contact me. Thanks and have a good weekend!
Chinese Idiom Story: 闻鸡起舞wén jī qǐ wǔ
There was a general named Zu Ti in the Jin Dynasty. He was a very respected man for his military strategy and loyal patriot. However, Zu Ti was a naughty boy as a child. When he was studying, he just liked to play all day long.
When Zu Ti grew up, he saw the country declining and had a hard time year after year. But he had little strength and shallow knowledge, so he could not help anything. In order to change the state of the country, Zu Ti began to study hard, study hard, and learn from books with rich knowledge and learn well.
Zu Ti had a good friend named Liu Kun, who, like Zu Ti, wanted to pacify the war and make the country strong so that the people could live a good life.
One day in the middle of the night, Zu Ti heard a rooster crowing and said to Liu Kun." The rooster is calling us to get up, is it time to practice swords?" Liu Kun readily agreed. From then on, Zu Ti and Liu Kun agreed to get up every day when they heard the rooster crowing to practice their swords. No matter if it was hot and cold, no matter if it was windy and rainy, they never stopped.

Greetings to everyone!
It has been a LOVEly week as we celebrated Hearts Day last Tuesday (Feb 14). Students and Fine Arts Teachers came to perform love songs during the Secondary Lunch.
As usual, we have been busy as well improving our knowledge and practical skills in music from Grade 5 all the way to my AP Music Theory classes.
Also, we would like to celebrate the success of one of our students, Lertphisidh Peslapunt, who got a 1st and 2nd runner up place in the recent Asia Students Arts Festival 2023 Piano Competition in Hong Kong.
Dear Niva Family!
Hello NIVA family,
This week has been uplifted by the Fine Arts Department. Students performed love songs for the Lunch Love mini concert on Valentine’s day. And 2 special songs performed by the Fine Arts Department So much love shared that day.
This week has been VERY exciting for the Fine Arts Department. On Valentine’s Day, Mr. Marc, Mr. Johnatan, Mr. Jim, and I performed two songs for senior students ("L O V E" by Michael Buble and "Shallow" by Lady Gaga and Bradly Cooper). That was amazing! I hope we will keep this tradition and continue surprising our students with exciting performances.
Another highlight of the week was the successful launch of the Art Club for ECA students. Our first activity was creating stunning artwork in Roman style. We used all kinds of beans to make a mosaic full of texture, color, and pattern. It's such a pleasure to see students put their hearts and souls into their creations❤

We are also currently working hard at finding new and improved resources for our students as we hope to create young, critical thinkers - keep an eye on this space.
Finally, as a school we are focusing on our SLO “Effective Communicators” and we are having so much fun doing this. The fun thing about these SLO’s is that it encourages our teachers and students to come up with creative ways to improve their communication on all fronts!

Greetings from the Humanities Department!
Our Marketing class is exploring different pricing strategies to understand how they can influence consumer behavior and increase sales. This is an essential skill that will benefit our students in their academic and professional careers.
We are excited to announce that our Business students will be having more interesting events in the coming weeks. We are still finalizing the details, these events will help our students develop their critical thinking, problem-solving, and teamwork skills. The events will be designed to be engaging, interactive, and most importantly, fun.
How did the outcome of World War II change the global balance of power?
Humans fight and have conflicts for various reasons. Some may be due to ideological differences, such as differences in beliefs or values. When people hold opposing views, it can lead to disagreements and tension. In some cases, these differences can escalate into violent conflicts.
Power and control can also be a driving force behind conflicts and wars. Whether it's political power or economic control, individuals or groups may seek to exert their influence over others, leading to conflicts that can escalate into full-scale wars.
Ultimately, the root causes of conflicts and wars are complex and multifaceted, and different conflicts can have different causes. However, by understanding the underlying factors that contribute to conflict, we can work towards finding ways to prevent and resolve them in the future.

MR. TYLER Head of Department
Mr. Wong Social Studies Teacher
This Department introduces the notion of STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) and STEM education with respect to the variety of environments and systems in which it needs to operate. The local, national and global contexts of STEM and STEM education are explored, particularly in terms of how these contexts interplay with educational settings such as schools.
STEM BLENDED LEARNING
Elementary school
Innovation leads to new products and processes that sustain our economy. This innovation in Math, Science and Technology literacy depends on a solid knowledge base in the STEM areas. It is clear that most jobs of the future will require a basic understanding of math, science and technology.
STEM education focuses on the introductory level STEM courses, as well as awareness of the STEM fields and occupations.
Middle school
At this stage, the courses become more rigorous and challenging. Student awareness of STEM fields and occupations is still pursued, as well as the academic requirements of such fields.
High school
At this Level, courses and pathways are now available in STEM fields and occupations, as well as preparation for post-secondary education and employment.
STEM PROGRAM
STEM is important because it pervades every part of our lives.

ATK Testing Schedule
Updated Covid Protocols October 2022
Date: October 16th, 2022
ATK Testing at NIVA
For quarter 2, we will continue with two (2) ATKs per week. We will continue this for all of quarter 2 and we will re-evaluate before the beginning of quarter 3. In part, this is because we have many young students in our school, and we must ensure we have systems in place to keep all stakeholders safe.
ATK #1: Bring the first ATK in a clear plastic bag to school on Monday mornings. The ATK will be checked to ensure it indicates a negative result.
ATK #2: Bring the first ATK in a clear plastic bag to school on Thursday mornings. The ATK will be checked to ensure it indicates a negative result.
Masks
Masks will continue to be worn when on campus.
Quarantine Guidelines
Keeping in line with the new government protocols, we will eliminate the high risk/low risk categories. If a student tests positive for Covid, only that student will remain home. However, the rest of the students will come to class as normal, and they will be asked to monitor for symptoms.
In the event that we have more than two students in the same class get Covid within a 3-day span of time, then the Safety Committee will meet to consider if online learning for the class is necessary. The Covid guidelines during the school commencement will be as follows:
