This Week’s Cover: NIVA U13 Girls Volleyball Team wins 2nd Place!
Dear NIVA Family, NIVA Girls Under 13 Volleyball Win Silver!
Last week, our NIVA under 13 girls volleyball team won the silver medal in the ISAA Volleyball Tournament! I was very lucky to attend the tournament and cheer on our team. After losing a competitive first game, our girls dug down deep and showed a great deal of heart, resilience, and determination to win their next three games against tough competition from the other teams. We are very proud of our girls!
ATK Testing
Each quarter, we review our ATK and Covid procedures. We will be reaching out to parents to get their feedback on ATK testing as we all begin to live with Covid. The NPSC will assist us in gathering parents' feedback. Thank you for all the support.
Singapore Science Trip FundRaising
Students from our AP Chemistry and AP Environmental Science class are planning a trip to the National University of Singapore (NUS). NUS is a very prestigious university. It is the #1 rated university in Asia for chemistry-related studies and #7 world-wide. The university is developing a program especially for our students, and NIVA is the first school to ever be offered this specially developed program. To help raise funds for their trip, students will begin selling bubble tea this week at lunch time and after school. Thank you for supporting this initiative and helping our students reach their goal.

Dear NIVA Family,
As we continue the third quarter, we are so proud of all the students. In ES, we finished the MAP testing and it was a big success. We know that the MAP test can be very difficult, and the students tried their very best. We will be showing all the parents the MAP scores very soon.
The ECE department has very exciting plans this week. We are hosting our first Pet Zoo in almost three years. It is going to be a very exciting event. The kids are going to have so much fun being able to look at all the different animals. It is a very exciting time for their kids. We look forward to showing you all the fun pictures.

Dear Parents,
It is essential for children to learn social skills early in life. This is what enables children to socialize, gain self-assurance, and be overall kind and caring human beings. On the playground and in the classroom, students develop their social skills. They gain communication skills and learn how to interact with friends. Additionally, they discover that they don't always receive what they want. Here is where sharing skills come into play. For children to grow up to be successful, caring, and communicative people, they must develop these abilities. Hooray to all ECE young learners!
ECE
Welcome Families,
This week, we were learning about "public places" in Social Studies class. We showed their pictures when they went to different places in town, and the students were amazed and talked about it with confidence. We also learned about the letter R and made rainbow crafts in English class. We did sensorial activities in Science class that the students really enjoyed, like the rainbow gelatin. We also learned about "heavy and light" in math class, where the students had a chance to weigh different objects and see if they were heavy objects or light objects. Last Friday, we made Rainbow Banana cupcakes , where they learned to pour, mix, and smash the bananas with a fork. For the highlight of our week, all students enjoyed feeding our pet rabbit, named "MooGrob" with small carrots. Lastly, the students experienced leading our ECE flagline.

This week, we explored O for Octopus and P for Popcorn, in our adventure through the English alphabet. We continued our exploration of community helpers, learning about police officers and doctors. The children are learning to become better friends, by sharing, talking through their feelings, and comforting each other. We’ve also been exploring our old and new classroom toys and story corner. The children love to build, read, and create, as their bodies get stronger, and their minds sharper!
Dear Parents,
This week went by so fast! The K2 students had a blast learning new skills everyday. This week the K2 students learned about the cvc letter “Oo”. They practiced sounding out letter sounds and blending three letter words like: pop, cob, log, mop, hot, & and pod. The students also continued to learn about the globe. They had the opportunity to color and cut out their own globes!
I hope everyone will have a fantastic weekend and come back ready for another awesome week on Monday!

Another week has passed but the fun and excitement for K2G never stops. This week K2G had fun playing with water. The students water the plants and flowers and enjoyed pouring water on the funnel. We also had an assessment last Friday in Science class and everyone did a great job. They also progress a lot in writing and counting numbers and they can do most of the activities independently. I am really proud and happy to see the result of all their hard work.

Dear Parents, What an adventurous week we have had today. With the help of our smart board and the internet we have traveled the world exploring countries and cities. In art we made our city out of milk cartons which then used to practice what is in a city. Walking through our neighborhoods and sharing the things we see around our home.
Dear Parents,
Our lessons this week were mainly about making comparisons and contrasts in the different subject areas. In math we practiced writing 2-digit numbers on a place value chart and determined the number of tens and ones. We also compared the value of the numbers to determine which was the greatest or the smallest. In social studies, we discussed how life was the same or different between the past and the present and in science, we compared the structures and behaviors of offsprings and parents.
Students took their second MAP test in reading and math as well. The students worked very hard and did their best!
Class: G1G Teacher: Ms. Chanya Park TA: Phonprapha Mangamnerd (Gift)
Dear Parents & Caregivers,
Our topic this quarter for science is all about Earth’s Changing Landscapes. We had been discussing and looking at what types of changes could occur during our lessons. The students had a chance to look at and ‘Make a Prediction’ during class last week. They looked at different rocks in water made up of different materials, one being chalk, and then had to observe what happens when the objects are mixed and moved around for a period of time. They had to shake the bottle for 2 mins and then see what the outcome was! One of the groups commented that, “When we touched the rocks it had changed in color and texture”.

Dear Parent,
My first week as the grade 3 teacher was filled with so much excitement. I am very happy to be in the classroom with all the students and learning about each individual. Last week, we did the MAP test, completed some English and Math assessments, learned about the 50 American states and wrote some short stories.
I am very impressed with all the kids. They are so far ahead in their studies. Over the next week, we will keep working on reading comprehension, writing short stories and greatest common factors. It will be hard work, but I know the students can do it. Good job grade 3!

Dear Parents/Guardians and Students,
For the past few weeks, our students have been tasked with creating a business plan. They needed to first decide on a location such as a desert, marine, urban, mountain, rainforest, etc. and then decide what product they could sell to make a profit based on that location’s advantages. Our grade four students then created a commercial detailing how the location is perfect for their product and how they will overcome some of the challenges they encounter based on their location. Check out the pictures below!

Dear Parents,
This week, our students completed their MAP testing and we couldn’t be prouder of their diligence and thoughtfulness! Outside of MAP testing, students continue to work on their nonfiction reading and writing skills - challenging AND valuable! Thank you to our students’ parents for their continued love and support! We hope you have a great week!
Sincerely,
Mr. Henry and Ms. Jillian

Dear Niva Community,
Congratulations to the U13 girl's volleyball team for winning 2nd place in the ISAA tournaments. Great job! It's a mixed grade level from the middle school that passionately prepares themselves to compete in this event after school. It's incredible to see them trained by our dedicated teachers, Mr. Atit and Ms. Lulu, who spend hours training. Indeed, determination and teamwork pave the way for success.
Our extra-curricular activity selections were a success. Students managed to pick another skill to master with the help of our talented teachers. All ECAs will start this week, and I hope everyone will have a fresh start.

Dear Parents,
This week we continued to work on strategies for writing expository essays. As well, we worked on poetry including writing haikus. Finally, we started another NoRedInk unit on essay writing and structure. Our kids are pretty funny and creative! I am loving their poetry right now and it is very reflective of our classroom personality. By the end of this week, they will choose their favorite poem and submit it to the NIVA Poetry Slam competition. I am looking forward to their entries!

Dear Parent,
The students are still buzzing with excitement about the fun they had at camp, and it's great to see them continue to relive their experiences and make new memories.
As we move forward, Our grade 9 business students are gearing up for their Big pitch project for Quarter 3, where they will be showcasing their business models. This is an exciting opportunity for our students to apply the skills they have learned in class and put their entrepreneurial talents to the test. We are confident that our students will do an outstanding job and can't wait to see what they come up with.
We appreciate your support as we strive to provide our students with enriching and enjoyable learning experiences. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out to us.

Dear Parents and Guardians,
I was very glad to hear G10 students’ exciting stories as they shared their experiences at the Secondary School Camp last February 1-3, 2023. It was a mix of emotions they said but surely, a memorable one. It was not easy to get back to learning since it felt like sometime that we were away. They showed great flexibility and adaptability as we continued and progressed with our week’s lesson. On Friday, we had a chapter test and each of them showed perseverance and determination.
As I spent my last week with them before I will take my maternity leave on the 20th, I am impressed by how they have grown over time and how they are learning many things each day. This class has grown closer as well and they have each other's back. I am happy to witness their growth everyday.
Mr. Reuben Ray Budayao will be the cover teacher while I am away. He will be a great addition to the NIVA Family.
Parents and Guardians, thank you for all your support to all our students and may all the blessings be in you.
Headline of the week
Walkin’ Weird
For the newsletter this week, I have decided to highlight an activity that the leadership class completed this week called: wEiRd WaLkIng. The idea behind this activity was for the seniors to walk around the school in places that normally find themselves. During this walk, they had to identify 3 things that they have not noticed in the past. The idea behind this activity is to get them thinking outside of the box - outside of their norms. We will continue with this activity with relative frequency to continue building this skill.
Looking forward:
The seniors will also be planning and executing various community service activities in the next few weeks so keep an eye out for that!

It’s been a busy week in the music department. The fifth graders were learning and practicing how to play with the left hand. Grade 6s is sight-singing new resources to enforce this skill. Knowing the roles of each production designer was the task for the seventh graders. The Grade 8s continued to explore the modes in music. Also, my AP Music Theory class is working on Analyzing Four-part harmony using Roman Numerals.
Lastly, some of the students' band has been preparing and practicing for their Hearts Day performance on Tuesday during Secondary Lunch.

Dear Niva Family,
Another busy week for the Art Department. The highlight of the week was a class for the first-graders where we plunged into the atmosphere of Ancient Egypt and created a pharaoh sarcophagus. We had so much fun having a tricky quiz about Pharaohs! I was incredibly surprized by how much information the kids knew about the ancient rulers. The lesson was extremely messy, but the students enjoyed it a lot.

This week, we have had different activities. The high school students were working with robots. They learned how to control the speed of a motor (fan) with a potentiometer (dimmer switch). Also, they worked with pandas and learned how to filter data frames as a fundamental data analyst does in the real world.
Grade 8 had a quiz about arrays, which is one of the most common types of variables. We can compare it with a shopping list. Only one name and many values. They did a great job on their quiz.
Grade 7 is enjoying their classes as they are doing google slides presentations. They are learning new things that they will use later when they have to prepare presentations for other subjects; transitions, effects, animations, insert videos and pictures into their presentations, … We had a lot of fun in grade 7 this week.
Grade 6 learned to be more respectful in class. They come to ILT from their break on Monday and their lunch on Friday. This week they understood that they needed to be on time to ILT class, not bring food or drinks, and not come running and shouting. They had to be quiet for 20 mins to understand that they needed to be more respectful.

The humanities department is well and truly alive with excitement.
Ms. Sheik is currently organizing our NIVA Young Entreperneur - an opportunity for our students to practice pitching a business idea to a panel of judges. We cannot wait for this event as we believe it will be very beneficial for our students.
As a humanities department, we are having so much fun co-ordinating and organizing these events and can’t wait to share with the NIVA community.
Business students are now shifting their focus to their upcoming Q3 project, The Big Pitch.
The students will be tasked with developing their own business models. The goal is for the students to demonstrate their understanding of the business concepts they have learned and apply them in a practical and creative way.
This project is not only a learning experience but also a fun and exciting challenge for the students. We are confident that our students will rise to the occasion and show their skills and talents.

ATK Testing Schedule
Updated Covid Protocols October 2022
Date: October 16th, 2022
ATK Testing at NIVA
For quarter 2, we will continue with two (2) ATKs per week. We will continue this for all of quarter 2 and we will re-evaluate before the beginning of quarter 3. In part, this is because we have many young students in our school, and we must ensure we have systems in place to keep all stakeholders safe.
ATK #1: Bring the first ATK in a clear plastic bag to school on Monday mornings. The ATK will be checked to ensure it indicates a negative result.
ATK #2: Bring the first ATK in a clear plastic bag to school on Thursday mornings. The ATK will be checked to ensure it indicates a negative result.
Masks
Masks will continue to be worn when on campus.
Quarantine Guidelines
Keeping in line with the new government protocols, we will eliminate the high risk/low risk categories. If a student tests positive for Covid, only that student will remain home. However, the rest of the students will come to class as normal, and they will be asked to monitor for symptoms.
In the event that we have more than two students in the same class get Covid within a 3-day span of time, then the Safety Committee will meet to consider if online learning for the class is necessary. The Covid guidelines during the school commencement will be as follows:
Student with a Positive ATK/PCR result: Isolate at home or at a hospital for 5 days. This is the requirement from the Ministry of Public Health dated October 1st, 2022. Students may only return to school after Day 5 with a clear medical certificate.
