However, the annual increase of 411,854 was the lowest since 2015/2016 due to international migration being slowed by COVID-19.

Canada recorded its lowest natural increase1 ever (+74,571).

This was expected because of the overall aging of the population, but it was also amplified by the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, with more deaths being reported.

International migration While Canada has welcomed record numbers of permanent and temporary immigrants since 2015/2016, international migratory growth decreased sharply from April 1 to June 30, 2020, following the border restrictions introduced as a result of the pandemic.

The Consumer Price Index: Keeping up with Canadian Consumers

The retail landscape has evolved rapidly since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Canadians adapted their consumption habits to include new essential products for daily living, and new ways of purchasing to limit in-person shopping trips.

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) represents changes in prices as experienced by Canadian consumers.

It measures price change by comparing, through time, the cost of a fixed basket of goods and services according to 8 major components.

The CPI basket is updated regularly to: • reflect the relative importance of various goods and services according to the spending habits of Canadians and, • add and remove products and services to maintain the relevance of the basket.

As a key measure of inflation, the CPI continues to incorporate new data sources and methods to adapt to the changing world.

The CPI has also responded to the suspension of in-person price collection due to the COVID-19 pandemic – most CPI prices are now collected from alternative data sources, including retail scanner data and websites. These advances ensure the CPI remains an accurate measure of inflation in changing times.

What are the accessibility experiences of Canadians with difficulties or long-term conditions?

Using data from the 2021 Survey on Accessibility in Federal Sector Organizations (SAFSO), this infographic provides a snapshot of barriers related to accessibility within federal sector organizations for Canadians living with difficulties or long-term conditions.1 In the past two years, 37% of Canadians with difficulties or long-term conditions experienced at least one barrier.2 The proportion experiencing one or more barriers was similar by gender:
