In the scenario we live today, the urgency of taking drastic measures in relation to climate change is one of our biggest concerns. The niu haus seeks to address these environmental concerns in a 18 m2 footprint.

VALLDAURA LABS

VALLDAURA SELF-SUFFICIENT LABORATORIES Collserola, Barcelona

The Valldaura Self-sufficient Labs is one of IAAC’s campuses located in the Collserola Natural Park wihtin the natural metropolitan area of Barcelona, Spain. The laboratories are located inside a 19th C. building that acts as a testing ground for innovation featuring the latest technologies in energy, information and fabrication.

Together with its three Laboratories: Food Lab, Energy Lab & Green Fab Lab; the facilities allow to research the specificities of the production of key elements involved in self-sufficiency: food, energy & things, combining ancestral knowledge that connects us to nature with the latest advanced technology. The Valldaura Campus hosts the MAEB, an investigative programme with a fully immersive experience in self-sufficient ecological living allowing for extensive, hands-on research and investigation in computational agriculture, metabolic systems, and ecological strategies. The aim is to create a sustainable, consciously designed ecology using both cutting edge technology and traditional craftsmanship. Valldaura Labs Campus

SHAPING THE TINY

The structure consists of a main frame and an adaptable substructure, both using pine wood from Valldaura. The waffle system links the rational interior with the organic envelope, providing a buffer zone where the equipment is placed. The skin is characterized by the use of shingles. That technique provides the design the freedom to acquire different forms with one same component. Through parametric design this ancient element acquires a more advanced approach. The house contains the basic functions for living freeing the main space by positioning the functions in the boundary. The metabolic system incorporates water, energy and information into one whole integrated system that feeds into the overall design. The project takes a conventional design and flips it so that the house grows from

inside out.

A system-based design allows us to adapt to multiple options as site location and client preferences change. We have investigated several system options dependent on exact requirements but have focused on a minimal system focused on reducing resource consumption for the prototype. Responding to the present situation, niu haus offers the possibility to be implemented both off-grid or in the city.
