Nestled in the heart of the serene landscapes of southern Senegal, the maternity centre stands as a beacon of hope and support for expecting mothers and their newborns in the village of Djibanar. Designed with meticulous attention to the needs of our users - the mothers, nursing, and medical staff - our centre aims to provide the best possible medical and healthcare support throughout the journey of motherhood. In a region where inadequate facilities contribute to heartbreaking child mortality rates and sanitation challenges for new mothers, our centre emerges as a vital lifeline. Constructed using locally sourced materials like bamboo, rammed earth, straw, and locally crafted bricks, our centre seamlessly blends with its natural surroundings, preserving the ecological balance of the area. Rooted in the principles of healing architecture, the design not only aims at providing essential healthcare services but also nurtures a sense of belonging and support for mothers and their precious babies in southern Senegal.

The gate design for IISER Bhopal features three distinct pathways: one for entry, one for exit, and a ceremonial entrance that converge to manage circulation efficiently. To highlight the importance of the ceremonial entrance, we used scale to create a sense of grandeur, setting it apart from the entry and exit points. The design integrates traditional architectural elements to honor historical styles while adopting a minimalist approach to reflect the institute’s values of discipline and formality. The use of an inverted catenary arch in the design provides stability by converting vertical forces into compressive forces. We employed visual and spatial hierarchy techniques to emphasize the ceremonial entrance, directing attention to the centrally placed IISER logo. This design creates a focal point that inspires students by symbolizing focus and goal achievement. The overall structure combines shear walls and composite materials to ensure both durability and long-span stability.
