The intention of this research is to critically analyse the Minha Casa Minha Vida housing programme of the federal government of Brazil as a policy and an approach, while simultaneously harnessing it to drive the creation of a productive territory, in which the inhabitants of informal settlements are included in productive networks across the city and city-region. Coque, an informal settlement in Recife, Brazil is the test site to investigate the potential of introducing productive activities along with housing provision. This research is a collaboration between students of Housing and Urbanism programme at the Architectural Association School of Architecture, London and students of the Federal University of Pernambuco in July 2013.
