BOMBS

Elliot Adamson

After a short but noticeable break, we’re happy to say that Bristol alt rock outfit BOMBS are taking to the Mr Wolf’s stage this July for a special comeback show with the NightBus family – a collective of passionate promoters from across Bristol and Bath, who combine all their knowledge and pull in all the favours they can in the name of putting on their favourite new and local bands. Five-piece BOMBS combine trip hop, rock, soul and blues music to create a totally unique sound. We asked front man Charlie Fitzgerald to answer our 10 questions…

Newcastle’s Elliot Adamson is one of the most exciting – and funny – young producers on the house and techno scene at the moment, having been handpicked by houseturned-techno giant, Bristol’s own Eats Everything to play at his last few Edible parties. He will, of course, also be playing at the Bristol edition this month, the Edible Summer BBQ, which is in honour of the label’s 10th release, a two-track EP from newly-signed Adamson, featuring Still Workin’ and Where the F***s My Flanger At.

Upcoming shows: 15 July, Mr Wolfs

Upcoming shows: 15 July, The Marble Factory

BAND

Producer

He’ll be playing alongside Waze & Odyssey, Melé and Lord Leopard, in the surrounds of the Marble Factory garden with plenty of summer vibes and BBQ treats.

THOSE QUESTIONS... 1. What have you learned today? That packing for Glastonbury in the roasting English summer is best done with ice cream, a fan, and regular G&Ts. 2. Favourite track of all time? You Sexy Thing – Hot Chocolate. 3. It’s 3am and the party is winding down, what track do you play to get everyone going again? You Sexy Thing – Hot Chocolate. 4. Who are your top three acts right now? Tungz, The Desert, Mount Nakara. 5. If you couldn’t work in music, what would you be doing instead? Well I used to be a tree surgeon, so probably still be doing that.

6. What was the last book you read? The Noise of Time by Julian Barnes. 7. Favourite thing on TV? How I Met Your Mother. 8. Are you afraid of anything? I’m really, really afraid of wasps and hornets. 9. Tell us something people don’t know about you... I have most of the Harry Potter audio books in my car and listen to them regularly. It’s narrated by Stephen Fry, so it’s totally legit. 10. What are you doing tomorrow? Playing at Glastonbury.

bombsmusic.com // fb.com/bombsmusic // @bombsmusic

THOSE QUESTIONS... 1. What have you learned today? Probably that the worst way to get woken up is by the primary school out the back hammering on tribal drums at 9am. 2. Favourite track of all time? Digital Justice – Profit (No Till). 3. It’s 3am and the party is winding down, what track do you play to get everyone going again? Well I’d just go to a different party if it’s winding down at 3am, cause if it’s winding down at 3am it’s probably fucking shite. 4. Who are your top three acts right now? Alex Virgo, Kanye West and Jeremy Corbyn.

6. What was the last book you read? Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind by Yuval Noah Harari. 7. Favourite thing on TV? Well, I’m watching House of Cards at the moment. 8. Are you afraid of anything? Myself. 9. Tell us something people don’t know about you... I nearly got murdered when I was younger. 10. What are you doing tomorrow? Fuck all!

5. If you couldn’t work in music, what would you be doing instead? Famous celebrity.

28 // LOCAL TALENT

LOCAL TALENT

OH91

Bristol producer Omari Champagnie, better known as OH91, has been quietly making waves on Bristol’s underground scene since his first release with Coyote Records in 2013. Keeping circles with the likes of the Bandulu collective, and with mentors including Sir Sypro and Gradmixxer, it’s clear that he’s been marked as a serious talent, despite only a handful of official releases. However, don’t let the fact he hasn’t put much out fool you into thinking he doesn’t take his craft very, very seriously. ‘The people who are around me see me making music every day. But with me, I see music as art – you can’t rush art. When people ask me how come I haven’t released this or that, it’s my art – I’d rather it be good, than putting a piece of shit out.

a dad from Jamaica and a mum from Trinidad, plus all the influences of a youthood in Bristol, he’s a producer that draws on a variety of sounds and inspirations. ‘I make music. One day I’ll wake up and I’ll make drum and bass, one day I’ll wake up and I’ll make house. It’s music – if it’s going to touch you in a way that you can connect with it, it shouldn’t actually matter what category it fits into. That’s how I see it. ‘People say they can hear bits of what I’ve been listening to in my music, and I do that a lot – referencing from other music, not copying, but referencing.’

‘There’s going to be more releases – way more vinyls – but at the moment it’s just ironing, I guess.’

Having been working at producing from the age of around 13 after a couple of friends introduced him to FruityLoops and Reason, Omari explains how his first release with Coyote Records, his Stealth EP, came about:

OH91 is an artist who is a bit too readily shoehorned into the label of a grime producer or a dubstep producer, but with

‘That tune was actually half finished, but I’m really good friends with Royal-T – outside of music I’m best friends with

him – and he was at my house when I was making it and he was like, “just send it, just send it – it doesn’t matter if it’s half finished”, and it got signed there and then within 10 minutes, so that really helped push my career up.

It’s kind of the same circuit, but doing it again, and doing it differently ‘Before that, I never really had a reason to leave the city, but after that I was going to gigs in London, Birmingham, up north, down south; then in 2015 I played my first ever international gig in New York and that was sick – to have an experience like that and to have people coming up to me that

LOCAL TALENT // 29

listen to my tunes and follow me on social media from across the pond.’

local lineups for a good few months, despite being such a big part of the Bristol scene.

We’ve seen a lot more of OH91 on the local scene in the last couple of months, including a prime time slot at Love Saves the Day, warming up for Clipz on the Lost Gardens stage; and he’s due to play Sequences festival at the end of this month. But prior to that, the producer had been noticeably absent on

‘Last year, I kind of took a break to look over my music and sort of rebrand – to just look over my tunes and see what’s actually being played and not being played, and what I’ve got to finish. It’s kind of the same circuit, but doing it again, and doing it differently.

‘Sir Sypro – who I’m also really good friends with, he’s like my mentor – he would push me a lot and there was one tune I made and I thought it was shit, but he really liked it. And he just played it every grime show without fail and, again, that picked up the barriers for me. ‘How we became friends is a funny story. I used to see Spyro at Motion and stuff, and one day he stopped me and was like,

30 // LOCAL TALENT

“Yo, I like your face. You’ve got a joke face – it’s funny, it kind of reminds me of me.” This was at Motion years ago and then we had a show together in Manchester where we exchanged numbers and got mad close. He says, “Bruv, your mixing is like me – when I was young.” I was there when he made Side By Side, all those tunes... He’s a real good guy to know. ‘And I’ve got another mentor, Grandmixxer – he’s one of my boys. We have reasonings and talk for hours about the scene, not dissing or anything, just what we would do to better ourselves and create a wave to get where we want to go. ‘It’s all about building relationships with people you can get on with and share information with – it’s not about getting a tune signed and thinking you’re clear, because you’re not, really.’ This attitude is more than evident while we’re with Omari, as he stops every few minutes to say hello to another person around Montpellier; as well as just clearly being an all-round friendly and approachable character (who actually stops to invite us to his BBQ before we part ways). ‘Bristol is so small, you’ll be walking along and see Joker driving past in his fast-ass car, or you’ll see Mensah, you might see Kahn and Neek – it’s so close and it’s so small that it’s never going to be one of those cities where people don’t get along. ‘I went to Cotham School and there used to be a record shop called Rooted Records on Gloucester Road, big up

LOCAL TALENT // 31

Peverelist who used to own it. I used to go into that record shop on the way home every day after school – I used to bun lessons sometimes and go in there and buy records; I know I shouldn’t have, but I still passed my GCSEs. ‘I used to go there and talk to him and get information about certain Bristol artists that were releasing music – ones I didn’t even know were from Bristol that I was listening to already.’ As a born and bred, we asked Omari what he thought about Bristol attracting new producers who may not have the same musical education as many of Bristol’s greats, with gentrification putting a dampener on the rave scene(s) that many of them came up through. ‘Bristol is always going to have that vibe though. It’s so open and everyone is so friendly that it doesn’t really matter where you’re from – if you come here you’re just going to get that vibe straight away.’ With his latest track on the circuit, Shuttle, already lined up for release, Omari reveals that he’s also got a four-track grime EP on the way.

I’ve released seven vinyls now and I’m happy with all of them, but the work I put into this one was mad ‘I’ve released seven vinyls now and I’m happy with all of them, but the work I put into this one was mad. I’m just trying to look for a home for it at the moment. ‘The four MCs I’ve got on it, no one is going to believe. It’s four grime tunes and people have definitely heard them – people are definitely going to be like, “Oh my god, you made this?” or “it was you that made this instrumental?” which has happened before.’ Other than that, Omari says that we can look forward more gigs, more tours and more releases, and potentially his own label on the horizon.

Young Guns frontman Gustav Wood spoke to Nitelife ahead of the festival, to talk about their touring schedule and what fans can look forward to, after the band’s longest break from touring to date. Young Guns first came to our attention in 2009 with the release of their first EP Mirrors. Since then, the band’s success has reached the masses with their extensive catalogue of music, including the release of their successful fourth album Echoes in 2016. Reflecting back on the band’s career since their first EP, Gustav talks about how Young Guns have progressed since their first release so many years ago. ‘It’s been nearly a decade of Young Guns and that’s terrifying! We’ve been touring nonstop and in some ways it still feels like we are a new band, but then there are other times when it really doesn’t feel that way at all. ‘When the band first got together, I said I’d sing until we found a proper singer… but I guess we never got another singer. It was all one big happy accident really, but I’m forever grateful, because I’m doing what I’m most passionate about.’ After nearly ten years together, with four albums and several global tours under their belts, Young Guns spend a lot of time focusing on the importance of keeping their sound fresh, whilst still continuing to follow the beat of their own drum. ‘I think when you’re in a band for some time, it can be hard to remain engaged and excited about what you’re doing, particularly if others are doing the same thing. So for us, it’s always been about “how do we remain excited by what we’re doing?”

We try not to concern ourselves with what’s cool and what’s not, or what’s contemporary or vogue. We just write music in the hope that people will appreciate it ‘We’ve had to look at different ways of writing music to keep it fresh. When we first started writing, we would just sit in a room and make a noise until we did something we thought was cool. These days, John and I might sit around a piano or at our laptops and build songs that way. ‘We try not to concern ourselves with what’s cool and what’s not, or what’s contemporary or vogue. We just write music in the hope that people will appreciate it.’ The Young Guns sound has not only reached all corners of the UK, but their success has stretched worldwide, including the home of rock n roll – The United States. ‘One thing I’ve found is that there’s a real appetite for rock music there. Thousands of radio stations play exclusively rock music, so people are hungry for it. It’s nice to go over there and be a part of it. I think the style of music we play is generally more accepted over there, so that tends to offer us a lot more opportunities. We’ve done stuff we never thought we’d be able to do, like perform at Wrestlemania, Vans Warped Tour and even tour with rock bands like Seether.’ Just one look at Young Guns touring schedule and you can see how much the band love to tour worldwide with their live shows, but whilst taking time out this year to write and spend time with loved ones, Gus reflects back on what drives the band to stay on the road.

PREVIEW // 33

‘I’ve never looked at chart musicians or the amount of albums sold as a particularly useful barometer of how well or badly the band are doing. The thing I enjoy seeing the most is people coming through the door and standing at the front of the stage and singing along. It might only be a handful of people or a big crowd, but that’s the thing I enjoy the most. ‘I think we’ve always just wanted to be out on the road performing. That’s the thing we all fantasised about when we were younger. ‘The truth is you travel a lot, you get really tired and you want to go home. But then you get home; you sit there for a few days and eventually get bored and think, ‘what the fuck am I doing?’ There isn’t anything else we’d rather be doing.

That being said, the band made a conscious decision this year to take a step back to re-charge their batteries and get their creative juices flowing in preparation for Young Guns’ inevitable fifth album. ‘We actively decided to take a step back this year so we could spend time with families and take a break, because we haven’t stopped in so long. John and I are in the middle of writing a new album though. I know it’s cliché to say, but it is probably the best work we’ve ever done. We’re really excited about this one and we want to get it released and out there as soon as we can.’ Finishing up the interview, Gus talks about Young Guns headline performance at Fat Lip Fest at The Lanes and Bristol Bierkeller later this July.

‘Because we spent the last two months hiding away writing new music, we are all itching to get back out there and perform again. This is the longest period we haven’t toured, so get ready to see a band that is really hungry, eager and grateful to be back on stage again. ‘We have some new material too, but we’re still deciding whether or not to play it out yet, so watch this space…’

THE INFLUENCERS // BEHIND THE SCENES WITH

LAILA MCKENZIE Laila Mckenzie Age: Occupation:

32 Promotions manager at Lakota & founder of Parallel Dimensions

Having only been in Bristol for three and a half years, Lakota promotions manager and independent promoter Laila Mckenzie has already had a significant impact on the city’s nightlife scene – managing the diary of one of Bristol’s most important clubs, as well as launching her own house and techno brand, Parallel Dimensions. ‘I’ve worked in the music industry for 15 years now in different capacities, and I’ve done promotions for 10 years. I come from up north, so I was involved in the club scene up there – Sheffield, Manchester, Leeds…’ However, after moving to Bristol during the height of the commercial crap house machine, Laila noticed a lack of authentic house nights and so, naturally, decided to start her own.

parents. I’m a single mum and I did university when my kids were babies, so I’ve always juggled my career with kids, but it is hard. ‘There are still a lot of barriers for women in the music industry, I think on both sides of the fence – artists and promoters. I’m not an artist, but I know a lot of women artists and they’ve had to move mountains to get to where they’ve got to get, and they’ll still get held down or people will say, “She got where she is because she’s a woman” – but actually they’ve had to work twice as hard as their male counterparts. ‘On the management side of things, again, it’s a man’s world, still. There’s been a lot of times where it’s felt like until people get to know me properly and find out what I’m about, they try and pull the wool over my eyes a bit. ‘Then people will turn around and say “Oh, she’s hardcore”, or this, that and the other – but for men it wouldn’t have been like that, it would just be normal. But because everyone expects a woman to be subtle, it’s like it’s something out of the ordinary. So there are definitely still stereotypes there.

At first, going all out with décor and aerialists and other performers, but quickly deciding to strip the nights right back down and just focus solely on the music and the atmosphere it brings all on its own.

In terms of what advice Laila would give to promoters starting out, it’s some pretty sensible stuff: ‘With everything that I do, I always put 100% in. Sometimes it pulls off, you might do amazing, you might make loads of money, it’s a good party, loads of people come. And then there are other times where I’ve still put my all into it and it’s flopped, I’ve lost money and I’ve felt disappointed.

‘And when I was going to house music events, it was just seeming that it wasn’t very mixed at all – it was very student focused, I wasn’t noticing many black people in there, and I found that quite disappointing because it is a music of black origin.’

‘I always offer my support to the community – any community projects, really, I try to get involved with, especially within the Caribbean music community. ‘I’ve also got a particular interest in woman in music and I want to start doing some projects around that – but it’s finding the time because I have two kids as well. ‘It is harder for women in the industry, especially

‘There’s been a lot of times where I think, what am I doing this for? It’s long hours and I’ve got kids. You don’t really have a social life anymore – your work becomes your social life and your friends become people who are in the industry as well, and the boundaries… there aren’t any anymore.

‘My friends, family, people I know have been in the game 30 years plus – whether they’ve been club owners, DJs or promoters. They don’t need to do it anymore, financially they’re good, and so it must be addictive. It’s a career and it’s a lifestyle.’

‘When I came to Bristol three and half years ago, it was house that was dominating the mass market at that time – I know Bristol will always be drum and bass and jungle – but that was the bandwagon sound at the time.

‘I do a lot of things in the community. I used to work for the old organisers of St Paul’s Carnival as their operations coordinator. And I will get involved in Carnival again, once they’ve decided what route they’re going to go down next year.

You have to have some kind of madness to be able to survive in the industry

‘But at the same time, the flipside to it is that if you’re doing something you love, you never get bored of it. Even if you’re tired and you don’t want to do it, you still feel that push inside of you, because you’ve got a passion for it. It’s addictive!

Because everyone expects a woman to be subtle, it’s like it’s something out of the ordinary

Outside of work, Laila also tries to use her events experience to benefit the local community, having been heavily involved with St Paul’s Carnival before it went on hiatus.

‘When you’re doing something where you really love the music, you’ll be blinded and you won’t see certain things, and you’ll just keep going and throwing money at it – and that’s okay, but at the end of the day, it is a business and if it’s your career and your bread and butter, you do need it to sustain you financially, so there’s a balance to be found.

‘You’ve got to be very strict and disciplined to keep boundaries in place, because you could work 24 hours a day.

‘Parallel Dimensions is a house and techno brand, but it’s authentic old school stuff with the pioneers. We’ve tried to stay really true to house music and what it sounds like and how it feels, how it’s supposed to be – bringing people together.

For a night dedicated to old school sounds, what better way to keep it authentic than by booking some of the house scene greats? Over the years, Laila has booked the likes of 808 State, Graeme Park, Grooverider, Fabio, Evil Eddie, K-Klass and John De Silva, as well as welcoming Bristol’s own house icon Deli-G as a regular Parallel resident.

better for me, because in business terms, I’m making decisions based on logic instead of passion.

‘You only have to look at statistics to see that there are far more men in the industry – it’s in your face that there is – but I question, why? Is it because they are doing a better a job, or is it because more doors get opened for them by other men?’ But despite having to work harder at times to prove herself, 15 years into a career in the industry, it’s clearly something that Laila is passionate about.

It’s a career and it’s a lifestyle ‘You have to have some kind of madness to be able to survive in the industry. There’s no structure, a lot of it is winging it, there’s a lot of risks, and you can put in a lot of hard work and not get much out of it. So you’ve got to have some sort of yearn inside you for the music or for events to be able to do it. ‘I’ve found that when I put on events with music that I’m passionate about, I don’t always make the right decisions. But when I put on events with music that’s not my music, or something I’d go out to, I find that works

‘What I say to other promoters is to always put 100% into it, because then if it doesn’t work out, but you know that you’ve ticked every box and there was nothing you could change, then you know that whatever made it not work isn’t down to you. ‘Because there are lots of factors we’re not in control of. An event might pop up that’s better than yours – you might have checked out all the local events beforehand, but it could be somebody from out of town that just rocks up and puts on a big event that sucks up your customers. It could be the weather! Loads of stuff… ‘I’ve booked an act before where it was a collective, and I got a call a couple of days before the show to say that the main guy had got locked up in prison. Things like that are completely out of your control. ‘Also, it doesn’t always have to be a big capacity to be a good party – it’s to do with the vibe. I’ve been to parties where there are 5000 people in there and there’s no vibe at all, just people standing around like zombies. And I’ve been to parties with 200 capacity where people have been proper vibing. It’s down to the effort you put in.’
