Bristol’s own DJ Cheeba is one of a handful of truly great cut and paste musicians today, in the ranks of Mr Scruff, DJ Yoda, and Ninja Tune-founders Coldcut, who he regularly joins on their Solid Steel mix show. Cheeba’s mixtapes have topped iTunes charts, but it’s the live shows he lives for, when he can bring his audio visual genius to life alongside the cut and paste style of turntablism he’s famous for. KAYLA PAINTER

Kayla Painter has been pushing the boundaries of Bristol’s electronic scene since 2012, when she independently released her debut EP Kayla Painter.

‘The album is ready to go, but it’s a case of finding a new home for it. I hope it will come out soon – it’s my first album, so I’m excited to just get it out.

Armed with little more than a laptop and synth, she creates dreamy, multi-layered soundscapes. Her tracks are bassdriven, usually ambient and always experimental.

‘I’ve written it all, but I’ve got other musicians on board. It’s 11 tracks and explores some of that experimental soundscapey stuff, and some tracks have singing and lyrics on, which is nice for me because obviously I don’t tend to write songs in that way.

She makes an art of performing live with her unique style of leftfield music – not an easy challenge with a crowd largely used to club music or watching a lead vocalist. But Kayla has succeeded in creating a show that’s as captivating to see as to hear, thanks in part to her work with visual artist Jason Baker, who creates hypnotic visuals which are projected onto screens in front of Kayla.

She’s been handpicked by Bristol’s most prolific gig-goer Big Jeff to headline the Exchange during Independent Venue Week this January – a nationwide celebration of independent venue culture, supported by Arts Council England and fronted by Charlatanes front man, Tim Burgess.

‘Big Jeff chose three bands he thought were representative of the local scene in different ways. He consumes a crazy amount of music and live shows, so it’s great that he wanted to push me forward for that.’

Big Jeff isn’t the only tastemaker with Kayla on the brain, with BBC Radio 6’s Mary Anne Hobbes picking up her track Drones as a favourite and giving it airplay on her show.

Drones comes from Kayla’s forthcoming debut album, which was due for release at the beginning of this year, but is currently caught up in legal red tape after the label came into financial difficulties.

‘Sometimes the sound source is quite experimental,’ she explains. ‘It might not be a guitar and bass, it might be stuff I’ve recorded in my house, like an elastic band or a crisp packet.

We went skip diving and built instruments out of nothing – I think that’s the roots of some of my experimental stuff ‘In one of my earlier tracks, Efa, there’s a sound a bit like a groan or a monster, and it’s my cassette player in the kitchen. I jammed two of the keys together and it made this really weird sound. And the buttons on the cassette player make up the beat of the drum – so the drumming on the track is all made out of clicks of a tape machine, not a drum kit.

‘I’ll hear stuff when I’m out and wish I had everything with me to record it, but sometimes I can just get it on my phone. I

live near a primary school and when they’re out doing sports day or playing on break, I get samples from that because it just sounds amazing – the kids are playing and it’s really airy, and you get different stuff every time. I like that atmospheric ambient sound of different things – in some tracks I’ll have the sound of a coffee shop or something like that, just really background, really low, to give it a sense of space and air.’

Kayla started out playing more traditional instruments than the cassette player, however. At school she played saxophone in an orchestra, before moving onto the bass guitar, guitar and keys, and went on to Newport Art School to study bass.

As an undergad, she played in a Welsh pop-rock band and experimented with a live drum and bass project with a friend, but eventually the more self-reliant practice of producing called to her.

‘I went there to play bass, but they didn’t actually let us play our instruments for a year. We went skip diving and built instruments out of nothing, and I think that’s the roots of some of my experimental stuff.

‘Then they taught us how to produce on a programme called Logic and I never thought I’d get into it, then I realised how much you could do without relying on anybody else, just by yourself in your bedroom. That spoke to me, because I’m an introvert. I find it quite draining to be around lots of people, so I actually do spend a lot of time on my own and that set up suited me well.

‘When I left uni, I didn’t know necessarily whether that was what I would do, I just thought it was a new thing I could do.

Then I got booked for a gig before I had any software to do it, and I remember I had to go and buy the software to perform live. It was for International Women’s Day and Bethan Elfyn booked me for it, and I thought that was really cool. So I bought Ableton, which is the software I use to perform live, and I leant from there really.’

Now, having navigated the beginnings of the music industry

herself, Kayla makes it her mission to help others in her old shoes. As well as being a tutor and course leader at BIMM, she’s also involved with organisations that support female musicians The World is Listening and Bristol Women in Music.

Apart from being a huge failing on his part, it just made me feel like when people would see me, they’d assume I’m a vocalist or a diva (laughs).

‘Supporting women in the industry is something that’s quite close to my heart. Promoting without any gender bias, male or female, is important to me. So it was really nice to be asked to be involved with that.

‘So the visuals is definitely about: “I don’t want to be the spectacle, I don’t want to be the centre of it.” Because it isn’t about that, it’s about the music and the art.

‘I don’t like the idea of unfair promotion because you’re a women. Once someone said to me at a gig, “that music was really cool, especially because you’re a girl.” And that really offended me. I know they meant it in a nice way, they meant it was unusual to hear that kind of music from a girl – I guess – but it made me feel like it was unusual to achieve something being a women. I’d rather everyone just looked at music for what it is, regardless of whether it was made by a women or a man.

‘Especially with the gigging scene, I’ve just had so much of it from sound guys where they won’t talk to me or address me.

They’ll talk to my visuals guy, because they think he knows what they deal is. And he’ll say, “well I don’t do any of the music, you’ll have to talk to her.” I’ll go over and introduce myself and they’re just not interested – it’s horrible, and it’s put me off and it’s made me feel really rubbish sometimes, and I hate the thought of anyone else going through that. So anything I can do to demystify that and try and encourage people not to be put off by it is important to me.’

It was in some measure these experiences that led Kayla to the ‘screen’ concept you can see at many of her live shows, which leaves her only partially visible behind a screen of entrancing visuals.

Because of the way I look, people get aN impression of what the music might be like ‘But also, my music is visually written, it’s always written with visuals in mind – it’s how I think about music. The first track I made ever, as I was making it, it really reminded me of insects moving around and bees and nature. So I made this stop motion of a bee flying around made out of objects from around the house. From the word go it’s always been this partnered experience – AV – it’s never been separate in my head.

‘For the show this month, I’m doing something visual, which is going to be a surprise on the night.’

REWIND // BEST OF LAST MONTH

THORNY @ THE EXCHANGE

Welcome to the wonderful, mystical world of Thorny where the extraordinary, beautiful people of Bristol come together to form an all inclusive queer cabaret event and platform for performers, musicians and everyone else in between.

Founded by Jo Bligh and one of Bristol’s finest drag queens Roxytocin, Thorny has brought a breath of fresh air to Bristol’s nightlife scene with a cabaret-style show, featuring a mixing pot of creative communities exhibiting work of all styles and genres. This December, Thorny held their final night of the year at the newly re-vamped Exchange, featuring a whole host of performers including Thorny-managed band Many Monika, drag king sensation The Great White Males and a host of spectacular performance artists.

The first act to open the night was London-based performance poet Paula Varjack. The audience was invited to turn from the main stage and direct their attention to a

smaller, makeshift stage to the right of the venue, framed by a golden backdrop. The spoken word artist delivered powerfulyet-humorous and relatable verses about the woes of dating an artist, and intimately walked through the crowd telling dark tales of fast-escalating intoxicating escapades when she promised her friend she was just going for ‘one coffee’.

Another highlight of the evening came from drag king punk band, The Great White Males. Having performed at Bristol’s Arnolfini earlier this summer, the ‘no-wave musical’ returned once again to deliver their satirical, idealistic views with front singer capitalist Archibald Tactful.

The four band members paraded the stage in grotesque grey suits and slicked back hair to ABBA punk covers, whilst altering the lyrics to preach witty, pro-Brexit propaganda. By the end of the set you couldn’t resist but love to hate them, whilst they poked fun at the disturbing lyrics in their own

rendition of Robin Thicke’s Blurred Lines and purposefully made your skin crawl.

REWIND // 23 To close the night, headline act and Bristol based band Many Monika took to the stage to deliver a deafening alt-punk set.

Front singer and ‘whining drag punkette’ Sean Warman and Co. performed an electrifying set featuring their latest single You Can’t Hide Who You Are, before DJ Alexandre Simões and Ms Midas took to the decks to deliver bass-heavy beats to the early hours.

Moments before the show began, Nitelife were introduced to Thorny founders Jo Bligh and Roxytocin and taken backstage to sit in a green room filled with performers, drag kings and drag queens as they prepared for the night ahead. Whilst talking amongst clouds of glitter, hairspray and echoes of laughter and excitement, Nitelife learnt more about the origin of the Thorny event.

The concept of Thorny spouted over a year ago from boredom and anger over the local nightlife scene. After living in Bristol for collectively ten years, Jo and Roxytocin felt there wasn’t a scene suited to them, so decided to take matters into their own hands. By starting out as a fundraising event for their friends’ Bristol Pride stage, Thorny soon grew into the extravaganza we know and love today.

‘I think we’re outside the norm and there weren’t any events taking place in Bristol at the time that supported that,’ says Roxytocin. ‘Local musicians, performers and attendees wanted to go to a night where they would be encouraged to witness things they wouldn’t normally see, whilst bringing different kinds of audiences together. We wanted to provide that safe space for people to be get creative and be silly without judgment.’

In comparison to other events in Bristol, Thorny are proud to host an all-inclusive night, providing a stage for anyone and everyone to get involved. Jo Bligh explains where the inspiration for their jam-packed event originates: ‘There are a lot of great events going on in Bristol and I believe there’s a place for everyone, but we started out because we felt there was a lack of representation for certain types of people.

‘For example, in the music scene we feel there is a massive under representation of female musicians, when really women in the Bristol music scene are making the best stuff right now, in our opinion. There’s also such a large number of performance artists and spoken word communities in Bristol that may not necessarily be getting the recognition they deserve, so we just wanted to bring awareness to all of these communities in Bristol and bring them together a bit more.’

With such an eclectic selection of performers, the Thorny family pride themselves on displaying a vast range of communities and bringing people together in a safe space with the strong emphasis on inclusivity for everyone.

Jo continues: ‘Bristol is made up of so many different nationalities, creeds, backgrounds and genders, or rejection of genders. We just wanted to create a space to encourage people to express themselves, to think about themselves doing performances, making music and making outfits, and going on to create a wider creative community. That’s why it’s important, because everyone’s got it in them to be creative and to be expressive.’

Everyone’s got it in them to be creative and to be expressive With so many acts coming out of Bristol and beyond, the Thorny organisers are spoilt for choice when it comes to booking acts for each event. But when it comes to planning, Jo and Roxytocin put a lot of thought into the space they are using as well as the lineup.

‘In our eyes, it’s not just about putting on a gig,’ says Jo. ‘We have an interest in what kind of mood we want to create for the night and we are always aiming to flip an idea on its head.

The last night we did at The Cube Microplex was way more music, but for tonight’s event we are responding to the venue change. Exchange is a much bigger venue, so we’re going to be using the space in innovative ways, with a selection of live music, DJs and performance artists.’

Before the pair escaped to kick off the night, Jo hinted that bigger and better things are in store for the Thorny family in 2017…

‘I believe in the element of surprise and there’s a lot more we can do. We are always trying to push the envelope in Bristol.

We like to put a lot of thought into the creative process when planning our next event, otherwise we’d just be standing there wearing dresses and saying a load of bullshit!’

RATIONALE 23 JANUARY, THE FLEECE Rationale comes to Bristol this month for what we predict is going to be one of the best shows of the year. And we, for one, will be grabbing the opportunity to see him play in the intimate setting of The Fleece before the rest of the world catches on…

He’s already sold out shows in London’s Village Underground and Scala, and featured on Radio 1’s Future Festival along with other ones to watch, Mura Masa, Nao, and Section Boyz.

The composer, multi-instrumentalist, songwriter and vocalist Tinashe Fazakerley has been well-entrenched in the music scene for years now, recording previously as Tinashé with an album released on Island Records in 2010, and more recently working behind the scenes as a songwriter for the likes of Rag ‘n’ Bone Man. Now he’s back under his new and improved moniker Rationale, with a unique and wholly refined brand of soulful R&B, which is both firmly in the electronic sphere and traditional songwriting arena – with goosebump-inducing vocals married to expert compositions.

‘The transition has been a bit of a natural one for me. I’ve been making music for a long, long time. And around four years or so, I landed in a really cool place where my production and the subject of songs that I tried to write came together.

I used things I hadn’t tried to use before, like retro sounding synthesisers. Trying to get there was always an exploration of my own skill set and finding out how I played bass, or played keys.’

He remerged onto the scene – somewhat unspectacularly – in 2015 when he released his debut track Fast Lane anonymously on Soundcloud. It’s since racked up over 11 million plays, plus major kudos and radio plays from Annie Mac, Pharrell Williams and Elton John. The 80s-indebted smooth summer jam Re.Up, and faintly gospellic Fuel to the Fire followed to similar praise.

‘I think it’s really important to not go out under any other pretext or any other history. I wanted to see if what I was creating was going to be liked on its merits, which is the music. I’m no dashing pop star, I’m not 6 foot tall, I’m probably the most average human being you’ll encounter on this planet. The music we put out, we wanted the response to be purely on the music.

‘I don’t want to hide away from anything that I’ve created at all, I think it was a brilliant bridge to getting where I am now. I respect people who reinvent themselves, your Michael Jacksons, it’s an art – so I’m quite pleased that I can perhaps follow in a similar path.’

Talking about the years between Tinashè and Rationale, he says: ‘I took some time away from making music for myself to try and hone my craft. It’s all very well being able to make things sound great, but what really speaks to people is a song – the bare bones, it’s what you write about. So I think doing that was a great way to explore other ways of songwriting not connected to my own stuff.’

He’s now signed to Warner Brothers and Bastille’s label Best Laid Plans, with his hugely-anticipated debut album due for release in March 2017.

‘This time round, I’ve basically fallen in a place where I didn’t go out looking for a deal. I think the dream for many musicians is to establish getting a deal, because that deal is going to get you to places, and sometimes that can create a lot of noise for the creator.

‘Being signed to a record company doesn’t actually mean anything at all. It’s great because you have a place to release music, but you still have to come up with the goods and deliver. It’s actually quite a lot of pressure.

‘But I think now, the place that I’m at, how old I am, and just the people around me, having these two things there – Warner and Best Laid Plans – is awesome. It means with this catch that I’ve hit, it’s a place to release the music, and that’s brilliant.’

PREVIEW // 25 Although Tinashe is often referred to as a Zimbabweanborn artist, it’s not an overt presence in his music. But as he explains, that doesn’t mean he isn’t heavily influenced by his traditional African upbringing.

‘I think earlier on in my career, I used to put a lot of my heritage into my music. I used to play an mbira (or ‘thumb piano’ – a traditional Zimbabwean instrument) and I used to play African-tinged guitar lines, but I think musically speaking now, you can trace some of the music I grew up to listening to, which funnily enough wasn’t all African music, but pop music that made its way across the water to Zimbabwe.

‘The African influences that reside in me are probably more the application, because I come from a traditional family and it’s known for Africans to be intensely hard working. I think there’s not a day that goes by where I don’t follow the example of my mother. I know where I come from, I sound very English but I am Zimbabwean. I know that the reason I’m here and the reason I work so hard is because of the example that was given to me by my mum, who literally worked her bottom off to try and create a life for us here.’

Aside from the abundant critical successes, Rationale’s name is also on the tongues of many of his musical peers, including the ten-times Grammy award-winning Pharrell Williams, who describing him, said: ‘This person has discovered beauty in their voice.’

‘It’s amazing,’ says Tinashe. ‘To this day I still wake up and put some Pharrell on and think, how did you make that happen, how did you do this… The day I heard he was into my stuff, I think I was happier than I was about probably a lot more important things that have happened in my life! It makes you feel like what you’re doing is perhaps the right thing. Because it’s subjective, isn’t it? It’s a mental game for the person who creates it. It was humbling, if anything. To collaborate one day would make me really happy.

‘Lately I’ve been listening to a lot of stuff coming out of the OVO Sound camp (Drake’s record label with Oliver El-Khatib and Noah “40” Shebi), and producers that are taking R&B and hip hop and putting it in the future. I think there’s an interesting thing that’s happening, where people are being more daring with their albums and their music. Like Solange Knowles put out an album that was striking both visually and musically. Or a band called DVSN, or ‘division’, coming up with this really great sounding music that feels like it’s making strides forward. I’m also a massive fan of Dev Hynes.’

Those coming to Rationale’s Bristol show this month are in for an experience to remember, because, as he explains, it’s the ‘remembering’ that’s important…

If you come to the show you hear the music in a much larger and much more ambitious platform ‘I’ve been to lots of shows where I’ve watched a band or an act and thought: that was really good, everything was in tune, etc. But it’s very rare that I go to show and I’m absolutely engulfed, and I want to find out a bit more about the act – their story and how they put their music together. And I want people to do that with my music.

‘I was the kid who would stare at the back of CD covers and try and work out which person did what, who played the keys, where it was recorded. I want to build a world around my music; it should be more than just three and a half minutes or however long a song is. And I want that to translate live as well – it’s not going on stage and pressing play with a DJ. ‘When you come to a show, it’s full on. There’s a band, there’s transitions, the songs are longer, and there’s a lot of crowd involvement.

‘I think if you come to the show and you’re a fan, you hear the music in a much larger and much more ambitious platform.

Come prepared to dance because a lot of the stuff is up in tempo and really fun to listen to.

‘In terms of the new stuff, it’s going to be a surprise as to what kind of content is in there. I’ve been really pushing hard in my craft to make sure I balance the feel of what the songs mean to people. There’s a song called Prodigal Son, for example, which is not the easiest thing to try and write about – the relationship of a dad I never had. Or trying to fit the word ‘equilibrium’ into a song was interesting as well!

‘It’s a bit of a step up in production and a step up in musical taste, and hopefully when the album comes, people will enjoy it.’

LEE PATTISON Lee Pattison Job title: Fate and Fiction label owner, DJ, Producer

You’ve had a long music career, recording as Deepgroove and Thrilogy, among other projects… Can you give us a potted history?

I started DJing in 1995, after many nights out at Lakota.

Then a few years on, one of the residents, Grayson Shipley and I decided to start a house night called PLAY with loads of crazy themes, free fancy dress, old lady nighties, toys and inflatables. We booked some amazing DJs including X-Press 2, Radio Slave, D Ramirez, Tony Thomas, Heidi, Tim Sheridan, Darren Emerson, James Zabiela, and Jesse Rose, in some of my favourite clubs: The Level, The Thekla and Timbuk 2.

After watching X-Press 2 play, Grayson and I began DJing together and Deepgroove was born. We won a Muzik Magazine Award for Best Bedroom DJ the same year and then a DJ Magazine Best Of British for Breakthrough DJ. We were also lucky enough to perform at some of the world’s greatest clubs like Space, where we closed the main room several occasions after the likes of Jeff Mills and Ivan Smagge.

On the production side, Deepgroove released music on labels like Sven Vath’s Cocoon, Rekids, Junior Boy’s Own, Veryverywrongindeed, Underwater, MBF and Klang

Elektronik. We made a techno album with Jamie Anderson on Germany’s seminal Harthouse label, recorded as Deepgroove & Thieve on Suara (one of Eats Everything’s early pseudonyms) and also as Idiotproof with Jamie Anderson on Made To Play.

A few years ago, I started my solo career as Thrilogy, focusing on deeper house with some music on Futureboogie, OM Records (a single with Maxxi Soundsystem) and WOLF Music.

I have a few more bits lined up on Omena Records (Local Talk’s sister label) with a killer Man Power remix and another WOLF EP. You’ve said Fate and Fiction is a label you’ve been meaning to start for ages – why, and why now?

I think you need to be fully committed to starting a label, especially a vinyl label, as it’s a bit of a money pit and there are a lot of labels out there already. The time feels right now as I feel I have found a kind of sound for Thrilogy, a direction for a label and time in my life to focus. Also, a collection of music and artists that are really exciting and fit into this outlet.

You seem to be majorly pushing Bristol talent on the label. Is that the plan?

It’s not really a major plan, as it is happening naturally and it is definitely enjoyable to promote fellow Bristol artists. But I am lucky enough to be shaped by all these amazing people and it is impossible not to be excited and want to shout about them.

What can you tell us about the first release?

It is a four track vinyl and digital release, distributed by Prime Direct Distribution with music from Thrilogy, Ishmael, Admin & Thrilogy and Remotif. It’s out early January and it sounds

kinda old deep house with dusty, record samples, keys and underground house drums.

It features cover artwork from local artist Annie Higgie – do you have any more plans to incorporate Bristol creatives?

Yes, most definitely. So love the logo Anna did for us and it looks fantastic on the screen print t-shirts we have done.

Also, we have drafted in Amie Nowlan for her beautiful video skills - she did such an amazing job on Ishmael’s live show and Tobias Norman (Leng Batton) is busy filming another cracking video.

What does a typical day ‘at the office’ look like for you?

At the moment, I’m in London with BUMP Rollerdisco, programming events and DJing, so busy and excited to be working with Severino, Ralph Lawson, Ashley Beedle, Dalston Superstore, Optimo, Midnight Riot, Bedmo Disco, Gutterfunk and Boogie Café. Maybe listening to a few demos, preparing our second release and time in the studio. And the odd visit to Chinatown.

For others wanting to follow in your footsteps, any advice for sticking it out in the Bristol music scene?

Stick it out. A lot.
