Redlight Hugh Pescod AKA Redlight is one of the biggest electronic producers to come out of Bristol in the past few years, traversing the rarely trodden ground between underground music and commercial success, with two charting singles to date. ‘Get Out My Head’ reached number 18 in the UK charts and ‘Lost in Your Love’ peaked at number 5. New single ‘Cure Me’ is due out this month and looks set for similar success. Starting out over a decade ago as drum and bass producer DJ Clipz, Hugh had made a name for himself, putting out tracks on respected labels including Roni Size’s Full Cycle and Shy FX’s Digital Soundboy. However, in 2009 he wanted to break away from drum and bass and diversify his output to reflect his other musical interests. He adopted the alias Redlight and set up his own label, Lobster Boy. Now living in London, he came back to his hometown last month to close the Red Bull Music Academy stage at St Pauls Carnival, b2b with Toddla T. We spoke to him about growing up in Bristol and his forthcoming album which is due out later this year. You started out as a drum and bass producer, why did you change your name from DJ Clipz to Redlight as you diversified your style? Just different projects, different names. You’ve got to keep moving. It’s like anything in life, a name’s a name. You know, if you were drinking cava in a fucking Bollinger bottle, you’d think it was Bollinger, but really it’s cava.

vocals and that happened when I left drum and bass. One of the reasons I stopped making drum and bass is because at that time it wasn’t really vocal-led, there are only a few people who did it well and you didn’t really get the opportunity to work with many good singers. I’ve grown up listening to RnB and hip-hop and techno and house and all kinds of music. Drum and bass was the one that I loved the most at a point, but I needed to move on. I love RnB man, I like working with vocals. And then because of that, all if a sudden it’s just blown up and gone more commercial and people wanted to buy it. So I thought ‘yeah great, I’ve got a commodity here’. So you’ve got to try and expand on that, but not sell yourself out in a way. Not for anyone else’s purposes, I don’t give a shit if anyone thinks I’ve sold out, people can think what they like. If I’m happy with the music I’m making, then that’s cool. Your hardest critic is yourself. You can think, oh right I’m going to make a track for the radio, and that’s cool, I’ll make a commercial tune for the radio, but it’s got to still have certain elements in it to make me happy. It’s got to work in a club, for example. That’s hard for me. I’ve probably got twenty tracks on my computer which are full vocal tunes which I’ll never release because I hate them. Because they’re too commercial for me, they’re not right. But then you make a track which you think is underground and then it goes commercial. I think as well we’re at a time now where people like myself who have grown up around underground music, it’s all gone overground. It’s all just music. There’s no such thing as the underground anymore. The underground died when the internet was invented, really. You could make a tune today and put it up on SoundCloud tomorrow, there’s nothing underground about that. You’re not ‘underground’, it’s just that you’re not popular! There’s no such thing as an underground movement, you don’t have to go to a club to hear any music. You can hear it on the internet. Yeah absolutely. I think the point we’re getting at is that your music is well respected by other people in the industry at the same time as being commercially successful and that’s not too common. Thanks. Well, you know what? It’s fucking hard to do! You spend your whole life not releasing tunes because of it and even then you can get caught out.

So was it a bit of a test that you set yourself? Well it’s not a test for me, it’s about the music. It’s not about me, I don’t want to be a celebrity, I don’t want to be posing on the front cover of a magazine. I will pose on the cover of a magazine, but it’s not what I’m really interested in. What I am interested in is making music. I’ll change my name a hundred times, it doesn’t matter to me. Names are just names, man. They just help you get paid, they help you DJ. But I think music travels further than the name it’s made under, definitely. Toddla T told Bristol Listings Collective magazine last month that he thinks you are “solidly the best electronic producer in the country” and described you as a “perfectionist to some next level”. Have you always been that way about producing music? Wow. I think what it is, is that I’ve grown up listening to British dance music my whole life and watched things come and go, and watched incredibly talented people come and go, and all I am, all I can compare myself to, is people that I respect. So if my music is not on the level of people that I respect, then I’ve got to keep working until it is. You closed the Red Bull Music Academy stage at St Paul’s Carnival last month b2b with Toddla T. What’s it like playing to your home crowd? I love it. I love Carnival, I’ve been playing there a long, long time. Since I used to be able to get on the tiny little stages, where you’d be playing vinyl and the wind would be blowing the needle off the record and you wouldn’t have any monitors. From where it’s come from to now, it’s amazing to see Red Bull wanting a piece of the action. There are pros and cons to that, but I think it’s a really good thing because it just makes it bigger and it keeps it going. People moan about other people getting involved in St Paul’s Carnival, like Red Bull, but if you take Ashton Court Festival, that’s disappeared and that used to be a really important thing in Bristol. St Pauls is the only one still going, so I think it’s great that people want to come and get involved in it for it to grow and keep going. I would hate to see St Pauls go. And it’s a charity at the end of the day, so if you have a good time there you should give them a bit of money because they struggle every year to pay for it. It’s a good carnival, I love it. I’ve been going for years and it’s really important for me to play there. If I wasn’t playing Red Bull, I’d be playing on one of the other roads. My friends, Dirt Sound System do a sound system there and I just love playing on their rig. I love Notting Hill Carnival too, they’re like my two best days of the year. Playing music in the street in the day time, you can’t beat that. People vibing out on the street and especially if it’s loud and you can hear loads of bass. It’s good. It’s good for me.

What effect do you think growing up in Bristol has had on your music? Loads. Basically everything. I grew up seven miles outside of Bristol in a tiny village when I was a kid and Bristol was the nearest city. ‘Cause I was born in London and started my life in London then I came to this sleepy little village and I was like, for fucks sake what am I doing here? Bristol was just down the road and it was everything for me. We used to get the bus down, we used to go raving, we did the Ruffneck Ting. I DJ’d the Thekla when I was thirteen! Watching Roni Size and Reprazent and Massive Attack and going up to Ashton Court Festival and watching Portishead, and Massive Attack did a dance tent there. You don’t realise it at the time and it’s not until now when I’m a lot older and I’m making music myself. I think when you’re a kid you don’t realise what you’re feeling, but Bristol was a magical place in the 90s. There was something really special going on and it was incredible to watch and be part of. As a producer of what would usually be described as underground styles of music (house / garage / dubstep), you’ve had two chart successes including a UK number 5. Yet you’re very well respected among your peers, so there’s no semblance of ‘selling out’ to the mainstream. What do you think it is about your music that has managed bridge the gap between the underground and commercial success? I’m getting a bit older now and it’s a journey. I can go and make dance floor tracks all day long, that’s not a problem for me. I know how to fucking make tunes for the dance floor, that’s what I’ve done most of my life and that’s the education Bristol gave me. What Bristol gave me was knowing how to make bass move through fucking big speakers and make people dance to it. That’s what Bristol was about for me, that was my education. I didn’t go to university, I went to fucking raves. But you can’t do one thing all your life. I’m into films and for me it’s all about creating different scenes and different colours and different moments. I like making different music because you can’t just watch the same film all your life. You want to watch more than one film; you want to watch a love film, you want to watch a porno, you want to watch a violent film, you want to watch a kids movie. I want to be a production house and make films and those films are different songs for different movies and different feelings. My music has crossed over because I had success with one track and what happens is you start making tracks with music which are sort of dance floor, but then you start writing songs on top of that with singers and then you’re instantly going more commercial because people can tap into it. People who aren’t necessarily into beats and bass and vibes, they’re into lyrics, vocals and dancing like that, all of a sudden you’re tapping into them as well. So that’s where it came from really, working with

My EP was out at the beginning of the year and because I like making lots of different music, no one can really categorise me. If you look on my SoundCloud comments sometimes and YouTube, although I don’t really look at YouTube comments ‘cause they’re too absurd, people are confused by it. So someone may have gotten into me because of ‘Source 16’ say, and then I go and do ‘Lost in Your Love’. And then they’re pissed off because I’ve done ‘Lost in Your Love’. And then someone who got into me because of that, when I come out with ‘Thunder’ or ‘36’ they’re like, what the fuck’s he doing? And then you come with ‘Cure Me‘ and now I’m going to come with ‘9Ts’ and everyone is like what the fuck? But it’s just music. You can’t please everyone. And when you know you can’t please everyone, that’s when you make the best music.

“I didn’t go to university, I went to fucking raves.” Your new Single Cure Me is out this month and looks set to do very well as well. Can you tell us a little bit about it? So basically, I’m now in an album cycle and I need to have my album ready in the next two months if I want to release it. And I want to finish it, I’m over it, I’m over talking about it. Basically, how I’ve done it is what I said earlier to you, it’s all movies, it’s all different moods. It’s all me and my production, so people should understand it with how I make my music, but at the same time there’s different themes, so ‘Cure Me’ is a scene in my film. I made ‘Cure Me’ for a boat party. I was like, I want a nice, chilled out summer vibe, I’m in fucking Croatia, I’m on the waves, there’s loads of chicks in bikinis and guys with no tops on, let’s make a nice little house roller. I’m excited about my album now, which I wasn’t for a long time, but now I’m really excited about it ‘cause it’s near completion. And it’s going to be different than everyone thinks. What I want to do is make an album where someone will hear a tune in the club and think, yeah, that’s reppin, that’s a big tune, but you can also put it on at home and it can just be on in the background and you don’t have to pay attention to it, but it just works with those ten tracks together.
