As we move towards
the end of the Monsoon Semester, we take a look back at an eventful month for NIT Calicut, dominated mainly by the SAC or should we say… EC elections. From the realization that all years can contest the elections to knowing the difference between SAC and EC, our beloved campus seemed abuzz with information, manifestos, meetings and feverish competition. Many posts were uncontested indicating deeper problems within the student community, but the electoral spirit was definitely appeased by the three contested positions. The posts of Sports Secretary & that of Cultural Affairs Secretary saw enthusiastic two way competitions. While the election for the post of Joint Secretary was the talk of the town with three contestants from three different years of the student community. This move was debated with much furor in meetings but was mostly hailed as a positive step in terms of inclusivity and increase in student interest. Campaigning was at an all time high and an online ping pong match ensued as dynamic multilingual posters and enthusiastically created videos were released by all contesting candidates. No stone was left unturned in rallying students to vote as friends and followers went above and beyond to spread the messages and manifestos of their chosen representatives.
Regardless, election day showed a stark contrast with electoral turnout decreasing from 75.56% to 57.56% this year. Last year had given NITC it’s highest ever voter turnout only to see a sharp fall in 2021. Despite this and other questions, the election went by without a hitch as results were declared on the 7th of November bringing an end to yet another interesting election that brought many relevant issues to the forefront of student discussion and debate. On another high note, the circular for return of students to campus “in a phased manner” was issued and hope is in the air. B18 and PG students can look forward to a brief semester offline as they bid farewell to their beloved Rajpath and nostalgic campus memories. We might not see another Ragam as students but at least we can have mess food one last time. The hope does come with apprehension nevertheless as COVID restrictions force students to limit their movements not only outside but also within the campus.
