The overall educational goal of the “Architecture and Urban Space” university course was to elaborate a proposal from the knowledge and skills provided by two specific subjects: Architectural Design and Urban Planning. Each student focused on developing an urban project considering the location, social aspects, environment and construction components. Another goal of the course was to master the complex phenomena

that characterise the contemporary processes of urbanisation and urban regeneration, at both levels local and global. Different analysis techniques have been described and re-used in each project. The year’s theme and the designated area was one of the main railway yards of Turin. The idea behind the proposal was to reintegrate the area and reconnect the two sides of the same city through the design of a park combining commercial and residential activities.

The aim of this course was to develop a project with the purpose to increase the liveability of the town. The research and design was focused on the architectural, technological and structural design of a building (conventional or unconventional), with load-bearing frame structure (concrete, steel or wood), taking into account the relationship with its surroundings. The project is situated in a small town near the alps called Novalesa. The design team discussed with the mayor the necessity of a new headquarters for education.

Moreover, further discussion with the residents led to the design team understanding the need of a new contemporary intervention for the village.

The site is situated at the entrance of the town on a steep terrain. A small ammount of houses together with the open landscape, gave us the possibility to create and imagine a new language. The proposal integreated the site level in order to enhance the beauty of the landscape, and help orient the user towards the points of interest, keeping in mind the functionality and sustainability of the project.

The course, organized in lectures and exercises, aimed to provide not only the operational tools for a correct use of the parametric software (Revit), but also cultural knowledge to evaluate the strong change brought by BIM technology to the construction industry. The software will be essential to control the management of the construction process (both during the design phase for the structural and economic fields) using the integrated database that is able to correlate graphic data (drawings) with

alphanumeric information (GFA automatic calculation, window and door schedules, evaluaton cost, etc.). The course focused its attention on the interoperability between different softwares. The team had decided to work on the House on the Castle Mountainside / Fran Silvestre Arquitectos. The minimal design and the angled walls was the perfect case study to start the challenge. Parametric elements were programmed in order to simulate operability costs and materials of different elements used in the building.

The Industrial Imprint // Thesis Officine Grandi Motori: Redevelopment of an industrial area on the traces of its past

Turin was the first capital of Italy and thanks to to the establishment of the Upper Italy Electricity Company, the industrialization of the entire city, and specifically the northern area, was made possible. The Barriera di Milano district became the center of the the development of new factories becoming the industrial district of the city. The whole neighbourhood in its transformation began to incorporate these new industrial centers that over the years have created their imprint on

the territory by setting rhythms and lifestyles for the whole area. Today almost all of these nuclei are abandoned. The city found itself with urban voids that offer the possibility to recreate spaces and services useful for the current lifestyle and modern needs. The “Officine Grandi Motori” area becomes the design fulcrum of this thesis which, through a careful urban analysis of the modern needs of the city, tend to draw a new project structured on the footprints of the past.
