Fostering Equity, Wellness & Connections

Collaboration: Nisha Patil & Rashmi Ahire

Instructors: Nita Christopher & Adam Groth

Our Tuscola Community Center embodies equity and sustainability, addressing the lack of green spaces and community amenities with inclusive, adaptable designs. It fosters recreation, mental wellness and social connection across all ages, abilities and backgrounds. Rooted in Tuscola’s tradition of shared celebrations, it serves as a vibrant hub for personal growth, collective empowerment and a deeper sense of belonging.

An Equitable Experience

A Pathway of Connections

The Entrance Lobby , with its welcoming double-height design, offers a view of the vibrant community center. From the first floor’s seating and socializing area, visitors can glimpse upper-level activities like jogging and cycling, fostering connection and energy.

The Central Multipurpose Space unites the community, hosting events like performances by the kitchen band—a local group of women aged 60-80. Once lacking practice spaces, they now enjoy proper amenities to share their joy. This vibrant area also welcomes everyone to celebrate and connect through shared experiences.

The large Physical Activity Area , well-lit by the south-tooth roof, welcomes people of all ages and abilities. It offers opportunities to stay active, nurture mental health, and prioritize overall well-being in an inclusive and supportive environment.

Yoga rooms and flexible activity rooms offer versatile options for group activities. A walking track spans the entire area, complemented by well-placed hydration and resting points. All-gender restrooms and changing areas ensure comfort, accessibility, and an equitable experience for all.

The Living Building Challenge inspires this design, integrating all Petals—Place, Water, Energy, Health & Happiness, Materials, Equity, and Beauty—into a regenerative solution. Using local materials, passive strategies, and site conditions, it reduces energy use and restores balance. Promoting equity with inclusive spaces, incorporating native plants, honoring cultural history, and celebrating biophilic design, it fosters community connection, health, and sustainability, creating a vibrant hub for heritage and wellness.

Blending outdoor and indoor spaces for a cohesive community experience

The ASC pre-post recovery ward is designed to create a therapeutic and healing environment for both patients and caregivers alike. A double-height glass facade overlooks a green buffer space between indoor and outdoor areas. Even with patient room curtains drawn, the central nurse station retains views of greenery.

The AOC waiting area features comfortable, informal seating surrounded by greenery and outdoor views. Filled with natural daylight, it offers a welcoming entry with color-coded wayfinding leading to consultation pods, ensuring a smooth and comfortable patient experience.

The Community Park revitalizes the area by replacing an urban desert with lush greenery, inviting social engagement spaces, safe pedestrian and bike pathways, and enhanced comfort, all set against the backdrop of the Chicago skyline. This transformation addresses the community’s previous lack of shared outdoor amenities, connectivity, and recreational opportunities, fostering a renewed connection between residents and their urban environment.

Internship Deisgn Competition

Kinderspace aims to redefine early childhood education by addressing the limitations of traditional learning environments that often hinder creativity and exploration. This competition challenges designers to create dynamic, inclusive spaces that inspire learning, collaboration and play.

The design prioritizes holistic development through three zones: Learning for focused, guided sessions; Collaboration for teamwork and group activities; and Play for physical growth through dynamic outdoor spaces. Modular and flexible layouts allow classroom walls to collapse into collaborative zones, creating adaptable spaces that foster interaction, creativity, and group learning while supporting cognitive and physical development.

This project envisions a vibrant space that seamlessly integrates a kindergarten and a community garden, fostering growth, interaction and connection . The kindergarten nurtures young minds with care and creativity, while the garden becomes a welcoming space for people to gather, socialize, and build relationships, enriching lives and revitalizing the community.

Children learn in classrooms designed for focused attention, with 10 students per room and guided teacher sessions. Modular layouts allow flexibility, fostering collaboration and creativity while aligning with the project brief to create an environment that nurtures growth, exploration, and meaningful educational experiences.

Children collaborate in a shared zone outside classrooms, designed to foster teamwork, play, and creativity. With collapsible partition walls, classrooms transform into larger spaces, allowing children from multiple rooms to connect, learn, and build together, creating a dynamic environment that encourages interaction and exploration.

Children play in an expansive outdoor area designed for running, jumping and group games, fostering physical development, coordination and collaboration. The playground is thoughtfully crafted to encourage teamwork, build social bonds, and support active engagement. It provides a dynamic environment where children can explore, grow, connect, and thrive through shared physical activities and playful interactions.

Human Centered Design for Emergency Behavioral Health Crises

The paper analyzes the role of Spatial Planning in Emergency Psychiatric Care, specifically focusing on space syntax analysis to compare traditional psychiatric wards and EmPATH units. It highlights how design influences a Care Delivery System that is Participatory, Non-Coercive, and Healing. By addressing issues such as ED behavioral health crises and “boarding,” it explores how innovative design solutions improve patient autonomy, reduce stress and enhance overall care outcomes.

Decoding Homelessness: A Holistic Approach to Intervention

This research explores the intricate drivers of homelessness by examining its interconnected causes through an evidence-based approach. Utilizing a comprehensive review of literature and causal loop diagrams, the study maps the complex relationships between variables, focusing on the role of healthcare access and its impact on homelessness. The findings aim to identify targeted interventions that can disrupt the cycle of homelessness and create pathways toward sustainable solutions.

Open Building Concept in Healthcare Architecture

The paper explores the feasibility of the Open Building Concept (OBC) in healthcare architecture, emphasizing its adaptability, sustainability, and patient-centered design. Using a mixed-methods approach with case studies and industry insights, it highlights OBC’s ability to address evolving medical needs and create flexible, dynamic healthcare spaces. The study advocates for a transformative shift in design philosophy, integrating long-term adaptability into healthcare infrastructure.

Documentation of Urban Settlements in Mumbai, India

This documentation analyzed existing and proposed zoning maps for Mumbai’s Marine Lines and Girgaon precincts, highlighting their historical evolution. Marine Lines transitioned from a 19th-century military base to a vibrant neighborhood, while Girgaon became an immigrant hub with chawl housing. The study examined how historical developments, like grazing grounds and Art Deco architecture, shaped the area’s urban fabric, offering insights into Mumbai’s evolving planning.
