Northwest Independent School District, home to more than 32,000 students across 35 campuses, provides premier educational services and opportunities to families in the northwest corridor of the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex.
With a vision of empowering learners and leaders to positively impact the world, NISD is committed to providing all students with an education that prepares them for the future – whether in college, the workforce or military. That commitment extends beyond schools, as the district's mission is to collaborate with students, families, communities and global partners to engage in a culture of learning that prepares all students to confidently navigate their future.
The Northwest ISD story began in the late 1800s, when local schools were created to serve children as the population grew amid new railroads, general stores and livery stables. In 1948, the
one-school districts of Haslet, Justin, Rhome and Roanoke joined hands to form Northwest ISD. Fairview, now known as New Fairview, joined the district the following year, and in 1950, construction began on a consolidated high school.
Encompassing 234 square miles, Northwest ISD serves all or part of 14 cities, towns and communities. These include Aurora, Haslet, Justin, New Fairview, Newark, Northlake, Rhome and Trophy Club, along with portions of Flower Mound, Fort Worth, Keller, Roanoke, Southlake and Westlake. As one of the largest school districts in the region, Northwest ISD’s geographical area extends into three counties: Denton, Tarrant and Wise.
With the addition of new students during summer months and continued growth, total enrollment grows by approximately 1,500 students per year. The district’s growth is a result of several factors, including the NISD reputation; the amount of active housing developments; the district size; and the attractive housing, retail and business industries in the immediate area.
Northwest ISD’s community has a history of passing bond referendums to keep pace with student population growth. To monitor construction progress across the district and view a timeline of previous bonds, schools and facilities, visit www.nisdtxconstruction.org.

Gene Pike Middle School
Gene Pike Middle School began the 2024-2025 school year in a new building, welcoming more than 1,100 students to a campus named for an instrumental figure in Northwest ISD’s history.
Located in the Northwest ISD complex near Northwest High School, Pike Middle School serves families in the central portion of the district. Students in Pike are part of a close-knit community that strives to ensure the best learning environment possible exists. With an increased capacity, the new Pike building provided much-needed capacity for Pike Panther students and staff.
Pike Middle School features an easily navigable layout as designed by Glenn Partners and built by Northstar Builders, with academic wings clearly separated from extracurricular areas, all tied together by centralized common areas. Funding for the project was approved by Northwest ISD voters in the 2021 bond referendum.
Located on the outskirts of Fort Worth, Pike serves families of students who attend Daniel, Justin and Love elementary schools, as well as portions of Hatfield and Lance Thompson elementary schools. The school’s new layout provides much-needed improvements to core
spaces to provide equity with middle schools across Northwest ISD, as well as collaboration spaces that are now standard in district schools.
The school is named after Gene Pike, a former district principal across all levels – elementary school, junior high school and high school. He later became director of secondary services and was as well known for his sense of humor as he was his commitment to students.
Mr. Pike spent 25 years serving students in Northwest ISD, including as principal of Haslet Elementary School from 1966 to 1970. He then transitioned to principal of Northwest Junior High School in 1970, followed by becoming principal of Northwest High School in 1972, a position he held until 1987. His children both attended Northwest ISD schools, as did all four of his grandchildren. Outside of his role in schools, Mr. Pike served the community as a councilman on Haslet City Council for 16 years and as a deacon and Sunday school teacher in First Baptist Church Haslet.
At Pike, students are encouraged to not only learn, but also have a passion for learning through the school’s various after-school opportunities. Pike is known for its strong community support, with the school’s PTSA earning awards for a strong commitment to a positive atmosphere from parents, students and staff alike.
