George Farquhar wrote his celebrated comedy The Beaux Strategem in 1707; three centuries later playwright Rosemary Jenkinson creates a new version, Bo Strategy, in collaboration with young people of Derry, in the Playhouse Theatre which is situated only a few strides from the home of Farquhar himself. This new comedy will then become one of the plays in the National Theatre Connections season, a nationwide new writing programme for teenage actors and following its premiere as part of the UK City of Culture 2013, will be performed by young actors all over the country.

Artskills provides young people with the opportunity to gain their essential skills qualifications as well as OCN’s in creative artforms, such as creative writing, digital photography, film and video, performance and web design.

We can work with individuals from 16 upwards who are not in education, employment (less than 16hrs) or training (less than four weeks to complete).
Due to the generosity of funders we are in a position to cover student travel to the course, EMA (education maintenance allowance) lunch costs depending on timetabling. Completers of the course will also receive a £100 cash bonus upon successfully completing the course.

systems. Explore your own social rank and its impact on situations, as well as strategies to become a more effective ally to yourself and others. This two-day master class is open to all and no previous experience necessary.
Playback Theatre for Community Development Delivered by international Artist Zhaleh Almaee 24th, Fri. 25th, Thurs. 31st January & Fri. 1st February, 1.00pm – 5pm ,The Playhouse Admission Free How do you listen and reflect back with your whole body? This is one key ingredient in Playback Theatre, an improvisational form of storytelling for community development that is practiced around the world. This master class
will develop your skills of deep listening using Playback and other creative approaches to strengthen connections and build resilient communities. This master class of four sessions is open to all and no previous experience necessary.

Theatre of Witness Course With Artistic Director Teya Sepinuck Mondays 6:00-9:30pm, from January 21-April 15, 2013 Free A special twelve-week course in which students will be introduced to Theatre of Witness through film, discussion, theory, creative exercises, and actual practice. This is an opportunity to immerse oneself in the creative process as well as to practice deep listening and bearing witness. Each session will focus on one of the Theatre of Witness’s twelve guiding principles, and participants will work closely with partners to create and direct a short Theatre of Witness piece for a classmate, perform in a short piece directed by a classmate, and create a short autobiographical piece.
Class size is limited to 10, admission through application. Applications can be received by either emailing emmastuart@derryplayhouse. co.uk or alternatively downloaded from the website www.theatreofwitness.org

Humdinger! Featuring Roddy Doyle and Julia Donaldson Thursday 7th- Saturday 10th March 2013 Admission Free The Playhouse is delighted to be the main venue for ‘Humdinger!’, a city wide children’s book festival to celebrate the best in children’s stories, characters and illustration.
‘Humdinger!’ will showcase amazing writers, performers, musicians, and illustrators from Ireland and beyond, including Roddy Doyle and Julia Donaldson.
‘Humdinger!’ will run for four days from 7th (7th is World Book Day!) to the 10th March as part of Derry/Londonderry’s City of Culture 2013 celebrations.
The Dog Ears team is on a mission to inspire a love of reading and to encourage the children of Northern Ireland to fall in love with books, stories and illustration.
