EXHIBITION AT THE MAC 8 FEB – 28 APRIL, ALL 3 MAC GALLERIES Over the course of a 30 year long career, Andy Warhol transformed contemporary art. He is one of the most influential American artists to emerge in the postwar period. The power of Warhol’s work comes from its focus on fundamental human themes – the beauty and glamour of youth and fame, material culture, the passing of time and the presence of death. Employing mass-production techniques, Warhol challenged preconceived notions about the nature of art and erased traditional distinctions between fine art and popular culture. The exhibition includes work from the ARTIST ROOMS collection, an impressive selection of 232 works which span the

artist’s entire body of work and reflect his eclectic career and vibrant personality. The d’Offay Donation comprises a superb array of important works representing all phases of Warhol’s career and a crosssection of media. The collection includes a unique selection of late diptychs as well as the celebrated four-part ‘Camouflage’ of 1986. A selection of spectacular stitched photographs, alongside a series of intriguing Polaroid self- portraits, highlight his photographic work. The collection is complemented by 126 Warhol posters from all periods of the artist’s career, including his films.

‘ “I’ve never met a person I couldn’t call a beauty…I always hear myself saying, ‘She’s a beauty!’ or ‘He’s a beauty!’ or ‘What a beauty!’ but…if everybody’s not a beauty, then nobody is.” ANDY WARHOL This amazing multimedia show by songwriters Dean Wareham & Britta Phillips, formerly of Luna (who have created scores for contemporary films such as Noah Baumbach’s The Squid & the Whale) will see musicians performing live on stage against a backdrop of a large video projection of Warhol’s silent film portraits, Screen Tests. Andy Warhol’s Screen Tests are revealing portraits of hundreds of different individuals, shot between 1964 and 1966. The subjects range from famous faces, such as Dennis Hopper and Lou Reed, to the anonymous – all of whom were visitors to Warhol’s famous studio, the Factory.

Tickets: £12 - £2 2

The subjects were asked to pose, lit strongly and filmed by Warhol with his stationary 16mm Bolex camera on silent, black and white 100-foot rolls of film. Each screen test lasted only as long as the roll of film. The resulting films were then projected in slow motion so that each lasts four minutes. Accompanied with Dean and Britta’s live music – their entrancing melodic guitar hooks, wistful lyrics and references to Velvet Underground – this is a unique opportunity to experience these captivating films. 13 Most Beautiful…Songs for Andy Warhol’s Screen Tests, a project jointly commissioned by the Andy Warhol Museum and Pittsburgh Cultural Trust for the Pittsburgh International Festival of Firsts 2008.

We can’t promise four inches of glitter on the floor, or a white horse, but we do promise a glittering night as we recreate one of the world’s most famous nightclubs – the one and only, Studio 54. For one night only, join the ranks of Andy Warhol, Calvin Klein, Madonna and Sly Stallone – all regulars at the original Studio 54 – to celebrate New York’s most infamous nightclub in all its glory. And who better to spin the tunes than Brooklyn’s Nicky Siano, the original resident DJ from Studio 54.

In 1971, at the age of 16, Siano got his first gig and was quickly considered to be one of the best DJs in the city. When Steve Rubell opened Studio 54 in 1977, he asked Nicky to be one of its resident DJs. Amongst other highlights, Nicky worked the DJ booth at Bianca Jagger’s infamous Studio 54 birthday party. Now it’s your chance to don your finery, grab a cocktail and throw some serious moves to Nicky’s tunes on the MAC’s Studio 54 dancefloor, recreated for 2013. LE CAROUSEL (ALBUM LAUNCH WEEKEND, CURATED BY PHIL KIERAN) 8 & 9 MAR, UPSTAIRS AT THE MAC “There comes a time in any selfrespecting musician’s life when they need to produce their masterpiece the album that defines them, the body of work that really demonstrates what their soul feels like. This is what I’ve done with my new band project, Le Carousel.” Phil Kieran, DJ

Teaming up with designer and film director Glenn Leyburn (Cherrybomb, Good Vibrations), Phil aims to create an iconic piece of art. Glenn will create an image inspired by the tunes on ‘Carousel’ which will be reproduced on canvas, resulting in a finished image of 18ft by 18ft. In effect, it’s a massive record sleeve. Once this image has been photographed and documented it will be broken up into its individual parts and 324 limited edition vinyl records will be produced. The final artwork will be on display Upstairs in the MAC for the duration on the weekend. Listening Lounge

07/01/2013 15:38

‘ This feels like one of the most impossible, beautiful, courageous and epic theatrical experiences you can imagine.’ THE GUARDIAN It’s 1965 and everything is just about to happen. Pop, subculture, superstars, feminism, drugs, bright lights, and sex are about to rock the world like never before. Gob Squad take the hand of the King Of Pop himself, Andy Warhol, and take a trip back to the underground cinemas of New York City, back to where it all began. In this unique piece of theatre, Gob Squad attempt to reconstruct Warhol’s film Kitchen along with elements of his other films such as Eat, Sleep and Screen Test that encapsulated the hedonistic energy of the swinging sixties. How did people dance in 1965? What did they

Tickets: £12 - £2 2

talk about? Had feminism happened yet? Find out in this witty and original show that will take you on a journey back in time and back to the future again. Gob Squad’s Kitchen is a quest for the original, the authentic and what lurks beneath the shiny surfaces of modern life. The show has toured widely across Europe and beyond. In January 2012 the piece was performed every day for a month at The Public Theater in New York to huge acclaim. This is their first ever performance in Ireland.
