OCHREOUS TALES: UNDER THE SHIFTING SHADOWS

Ochreous Tales situated in Pondicherry, India is an envelope created with an intent to invite Cinematographers who want to explore the potential of the city in terms of its visual beauty. The underlying concept is framing views outside as well as inside through elements like arches and columns and creating spaces that allow both private and public interaction.

USER GROUP MODEL MAKING

Users are a group of college friends who are pursuing Cinematography and work together. They share a common interest in the world of movies. They want to explore the potential of the city in terms of its visual beauty and capture shots that help them build a script for their upcoming movie project. They are curious to explore foreign-like experience in their own country, but also want a house that feels like home.

DECODING THE POETICS OF SPACE

I feel the movement of clouds beneath my feet, making me travel their path inside my own dwelling. This feeling I cannot describe, makes me want to play with the pool of clouds everyday. I mess around with the clouds for sometime just like a little child, making figurines of different creatures. They fade away with the constant moving of clouds, realizing me that its merely a real one.

I see figures on walls that try to copy my movements. The candle that glows inside this dark cave helps to create this beauty of shadow which is the soul of a body and the dark side of mankind. I cast these shadows in order to stay aware of the surroundings and be at peace with myself.

I shout and I shout to hear my echo back. Alone, standing inside this caligenous cave, wanting to hear sounds in this chamber because the voices of creatures don’t reach here.

I hear my own voices to feel surrounded by somebody and to escape from fear of terror. I can see sunlight peeping from the end of the tunnel and wish to find my way back to the forest.

The feeling of being at the horizon is the oneiric feeling I’ve been chasing and so, I stand near the opening and cherish the scene. The clouds that enter my space bring with them the colours of the season along with happiness. The colours of forest bring in voices of animals and chirping of birds that calm my mind and makes me feel connected to nature.

The pathway is full of memories that I have collected since last two years. I collect medium-sized stones and paint them with the imprints of different creatures like dogs, fox, birds and also cast prints of various leaves found near my dwelling. I stack them up like a showpiece inside the cave. The prints are covered by the haziness of the sorrounding and are merely seen.

Its six o’clock in the morning and I’m here again to watch birds. How beautiful the sunrise looks. This is the perfect time to observe birds as they work the most during this time. Slowly peeping into a bird’s nest, I try to sketch out their habitat and understand their way of living. Sometimes I get an opportunity to see how they build their nest.

10 STORYLINE
“hut dream,” which is well-known to everyone who cherishes the legendary images of primitive houses. But in most hut dreams we hope to live elsewhere, far from the over-crowded house, far from city cares… the round house, the primitive hut, of prehistoric man...” -Gaston Bachelard The Poetics of Space “A reminder of winter strengthens the happiness of inhabiting. In the reign of imagination alone, reminder of winter increases the houses’ value as a place to live in.” -Gaston Bachelard, The Poetics Of Space:

Facade design and detailing

Two major facades - North and South have been discuused ahead which gives an idea about the types of opening used. The north facade includes types of proposed windows and the concept of maximum light from north whereas the south facade comprises of smaller windows at the top of the vault and how the idea behind the huge opening (door) is explored in order to prevent harsh sunlight.

8 Section Groin Vault that catches the eye first when it comes to the facade of the building.

The windows at the top are tranformed into a curtain window by combining two windows together and exploring.

These slit windows help in allowing limited light. The walls have such windows so that there is more space to display art pieces.

Concept behind the staircase

The staircase is made up of two materials: wood and metal. The entire structure of the staircase is made up of metal whereas the treads are made out of wooden planks. Staircase as the main element, the focus also shifted to the area between the staircase which could be used for an installation. The explorations are made for the same.

The area marked was the

most appro priate for a staircase that needed two mid landings and so the process started by selecting the space first.

Fascinated by the title itself, I chose Tribal Arts Of India as this semester’s elective as I wanted to explore my painting skills.

This elective was a fun way to learn new arts of India which helped in developing my skills. The two arts included Warli art from Maharashtra and Bhil art from Madhya Pradesh.

Learning the basics of Warli was interesting and something new as patterns were drawn out with hand in between lines of differ ent heights while the Bhil art dealt more with animal figures.

The three dimensional form is made using flattening the slab to the same thickness and joining them. The course was selected with a purpose of exploring different clay forms and ways of sculpting it. It was interesting to be a part of the process and learn something out of the academic schedule.
