The design of Nipissing University’s mace is a complex mixture of artistry and power. Its presence represents the authority vested in the University to grant degrees, yet its design signifies more than the right to certify students as knowledgeable; it incorporates all the effort, history and tradition that surround both the site of and the vision for the University.
Designed after Nipissing received its degree-granting charter on December 10, 1992, the mace masterfully pulls together the many symbolic elements important to its identity: the University’s crest, the Athenian owl pictured on the crest, the Nipissing University logo, Nipissing’s motto “Integritas” and the traditions of the Ojibwa people who have been keepers of the land on which the University stands.
The Nipissing University mace is an expression of growth and transformation within a context of harmony and equanimity with the world in which we dwell, specifically, the Nipissing landscape. From the wisdom of the Anishinabek people, the mace draws the symbolism of the four orders of creation – mineral, plant, animal and human (and the gifts of the Four Winds):
• the mineral elements are represented by the local red granite, gold, silver, bronze and polished stones that signify the four cardinal directions – red, yellow, white, and black;
• the plant world is represented in the form of oak and maple leaves carved into the shaft of the mace;
• the animal world finds its representation in the owl; and
• the human element is represented by the hands that hold the mace and the hands that crafted it.
As well, in keeping with Indigenous tradition, the mace joins Mother Earth and Father Sky as it journeys symbolically from the fragment of granite at its base through the trees to the golden sphere of the sun and the owl of the air.
Like the institution it represents, the mace is not static; it expresses growth, movement and perpetuity. Time is asserted through the four seasons and the transformation of the oak and maple from buds to leaves to fruit. The movement of the eagle feathers, the beads of the “medicine wheel”, and the owl, poised with an ambiguous relationship to flight, add to the dynamics.
The University itself is represented by the embossed silver and enameled emblem repeated to form a band, by the four coats of arms that support the crown, and by the embossed silver motto “Integritas.” The mace is designed to represent those attributes which make Nipissing distinct: Harmony – Growth – Perpetuity.

Nipissing University is a young and dynamic institution whose strategic focus on student success and experience has translated into consistent top rankings in the country in the areas of student support, student experience, faculty, and residences.
The University received its charter as an independent university in 1992, and was created to specifically address the needs of Northern Ontario. Nipissing’s strategic priorities regarding the student experience as well as academic and research excellence is grounded in this commitment. Over the course of the past 29 years, Nipissing has conferred over 40,000 degrees and positively impacted millions of lives.
Nipissing’s roots, however, extend much deeper, stretching back more than a century to 1909 and the opening of the North Bay Normal School, the precursor to Nipissing’s highly respected Schulich School of Education. As a result of the vision and perseverance of local citizens to establish a university in North Bay, Northeastern University was formed in 1960 and later renamed Nipissing University College in 1967 as an affiliate of Laurentian University.
Nipissing is proud to be a primarily undergraduate university with a reputation for excellence in teacher education, arts, science, professional programs and with four distinct nursing programs, it is proportionally the most nursing intensive university in Ontario.
As a premier destination for students seeking innovative academic programming in a student-centered community, Nipissing is renowned for its ability to provide a personalized education in a supportive environment with dedicated faculty who are creating new knowledge through research that positively impacts our communities, locally and globally. Students find themselves in a high-quality academic environment that is student-focused and based on personal teaching practices and innovative approaches to learning.
Nipissing University is home to a burgeoning research culture that provides undergraduate students the opportunity to perform graduate-level research. Students and graduates consistently give top marks to the university in high-profile surveys that measure student satisfaction, such as the National Survey of Student Engagement.
Recognizing the value of supporting an international profile for our students, Nipissing holds exchange agreements with institutions around the world, actively recruits international students and provides funding for refugee students. As well, the Schulich School of Education operates a unique international teaching program which provides the opportunity for students to teach abroad.
Access and equity have been a longstanding priority of Nipissing with a focus on students who, without interventions and support, might not otherwise participate in postsecondary education. For example, Nipissing has experienced continued growth in the enrollment of full-time first generation students as well as increases in the number of students with disabilities and number of full-time Indigenous students enrolled at the University.
Nipissing is committed to making an impact and playing a positive role in the educational, social, cultural and economic life in the communities it serves.
nipissing university welcomes you
Theroots of the Schulich School of Education reach back more than 100 years, to the opening of the North Bay Normal School in 1909. The Normal School was renamed North Bay Teachers’ College in 1953. In 1972, the College moved into a new home at The Education Centre, which was specifically designed for the integration of Nipissing University College and the Teachers’ College. Nipissing University’s Bachelor of Education program was one of the first teacher education programs to be fully accredited by the Ontario College of Teachers and is one of the most well recognized Education programs in the province. In 2010, Nipissing’s Faculty of Education became the Schulich School of Education, thanks to a generous gift from Mr. Seymour Schulich.
The Schulich School of Education is renowned for graduating leaders. The mission of the School is to promote the professional growth of teachers through pre-service, in-service and graduate programs, and to provide educational leadership and support through consultation and research. The School provides students with an understanding of the basic philosophical, psychological and sociological foundations of education, to enable them to use a system-based approach in their teaching, and to introduce them to a rationale for curriculum design through a study of the various strands of the curriculum.
The continuing evolution of the Schulich School of Education includes the introduction of Nipissing University’s first PhD program in Education with a focus on Educational Sustainability. The School is also home to the Bachelor of Physical Health Education program and the Master of Education program.
The Schulich School of Education focuses on equipping students with critical thinking skills, humane values and practical skills necessary to become lifelong learners. The aim is to take learning beyond schools and direct students to apply their knowledge actively in the larger world.

presentation of the chancellor’s award for excellence in teaching (fasbu)
The Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching was established to recognize full-time faculty with an outstanding record of teaching, including evidence of engagement with the scholarship of Teaching and Learning and evidence of sustained innovation in teaching practice including, but not limited to, in areas such as teaching collaborations, experiential learning, interdisciplinary teaching and those who play a significant role in the education of Nipissing University students. Dr. Susan Srigley is this year’s recipient of the Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching (FASBU).
Dr. Susan Srigley is a Professor of Religions and Cultures who has been teaching at Nipissing University for 20 years. She previously received the Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2008 and is once again being recognized for her dedication to pedagogy and her enduring impact on students.
In addition to teaching courses in religious studies, Dr. Srigley has developed innovative offerings in death studies and palliative care. These interdisciplinary courses attract students from both the humanities and professional programs such as Nursing and Social Work. Her teaching explores subjects like death, dying, and spirituality, as well as the social justice dimensions of end-of-life care.
Dr. Srigley is committed to fostering a safe, inclusive, and compassionate classroom environment, particularly when addressing sensitive topics. Her students often remark on how her openness and enthusiasm allow them to engage deeply with their own perceptions of death. By encouraging thoughtful discussion, she helps students cultivate greater death awareness, which they carry forward into their personal lives and professional practices.
She has shared her pedagogical approach internationally, including at the Contemplative Care Symposium at the Garrison Institute in New York, and she has co-presented with her students at Lifting the Lid, an international online death festival. Dr. Srigley has also contributed to several podcasts and recently authored an article on cultivating death awareness in the university classroom.
The Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching (CASBU) was established to recognize contract academic faculty members with an outstanding record of exceptional teaching and who play a significant role in the education of Nipissing University students. Dr. Tiffany Roberts is this year’s recipient of the Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching (CASBU).
Dr. Tiffany Roberts is a passionate educator, dedicated mentor, and lifelong learner. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in English and History (Honors) from Trent University, a Bachelor of Education from Queen’s University, a Master of Education and PhD in Education from Nipissing University and is currently completing a Master of Arts in Social Justice at Lakehead University. She has also completed numerous additional qualifications in education and a certificate in Creative Writing from the University of Toronto.
Dr. Roberts has worked in education for nearly three decades. After teaching secondary school for ten years, she became a curriculum coordinator at the Rainbow District School Board in Sudbury, a role she has held for the past 18 years. In this capacity, she collaborates with educators to support curriculum design, assessment, and professional learning across multiple subject areas.
While completing her doctoral studies at Nipissing, Dr. Roberts served on the Board of Trustees for the Nipissing University Consortium for the Study of Leadership and Ethics in Education (NUCSLE) and regularly presented her research at international conferences hosted by the affiliated Consortium for the Study of Leadership and Ethics in Education (CSLEE). Her dissertation, supervised by the late Dr. Heather Rintoul, received the Paul T. Begley International Award for Graduate Student Research. She now serves as a board member and awards committee chair for CSLEE and is co-editor of the Journal of Authentic Leadership in Education (JALE).
Since joining Nipissing University as a part-time instructor in 2021, Dr. Roberts has brought her expertise, energy, and compassion to the Schulich School of Education. Her students consistently highlight her commitment to authentic, student-centred teaching and her ability to model effective relationship-building, lesson design, and assessment practices. She considers it a privilege to help shape the next generation of educators.
Dr. Roberts is honoured to receive the 2025 Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching (CASBU) and dedicates this recognition to her students. She also extends heartfelt thanks to her family for their unwavering support of her personal and professional journey.
The Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Research was established to recognize and celebrate the value and importance of research conducted by Nipissing University faculty. Research by faculty and their students plays a significant role in the growth of Nipissing University and the education of students. Dr. Kirsten Greer is this year’s recipient of the Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Research.
Dr. Kirsten Greer is a globally respected historical geographer whose scholarship exemplifies community-driven research and interdisciplinary collaboration. An Associate Professor in the Departments of Geography and History at Nipissing University and a member of the Master’s in Environmental Studies/Environmental Sciences program, Dr. Greer has held the Canada Research Chair in Global Environmental Histories and Geographies since 2015.
Greer earned her BA in Geography from McGill University, MA in Geography from Wilfrid Laurier University/University of Waterloo, and PhD in Geography from Queen’s University. Before joining Nipissing in 2013, she completed a prestigious SSHRC postdoctoral fellowship in History at the University of Warwick in the United Kingdom.
Her Canada Research Chair program is rooted in reparative environmental histories, work that is integrative, interdisciplinary, and grounded in meaningful relationships with communities. At the heart of her research is collaboration with Dokis First Nation and Nipissing First Nation on projects including Bringing Our Ancestors Home: The Robinson-Huron Treaty / Chicago Field Museum Repatriation Project, the Lake Nipissing Beading Project, and the Nbisiing Guides of the Carnegie Museum Project. Through these initiatives, Greer actively supports knowledge repatriation, community empowerment, and historical justice.
An expert in historical military geographies, Greer is the author of Red Coats and Wild Birds: How Military Ornithologists and Migrant Birds Shaped Empire (UNC Press, 2020), which explores the entangled histories of empire, ecology, and scientific knowledge.
She has secured more than $1.8 million in funding through the Canada Research Chair, Canada Foundation for Innovation, and SSHRC programs. These resources have been widely shared across institutional and community partners, including Nipissing University, Dokis First Nation, Nipissing First Nation, the North Bay Museum, and an expansive network of national and international collaborators.
A trailblazer in interdisciplinary research, Greer’s work bridges the humanities and geophysical sciences, collaborating with experts in fields such as dendrochronology, hydrology, climatology, glaciology, ornithology, biogeochemistry, and beyond. Her leadership continues to expand the scope of environmental research and to deepen our understanding of the relationships between people, places, and planetary change.

Jennifer Jones is one of the most decorated and admired athletes in Canadian sports history, a six-time national curling champion, two-time world champion, and Olympic gold medalist. Her remarkable career on the ice is matched by her accomplishments as a lawyer, motivational speaker, sports broadcaster, community advocate, and proud mother.
Jones cemented her legacy in 2014 when she led the first women’s curling team to an undefeated Olympic gold medal, a feat that remains unmatched. Her strategic brilliance, fierce competitiveness, and unwavering composure under pressure have led her to be recognized as the greatest female skip in Canadian history, and the top overall curler, in a national TSN poll of sportscasters, reporters, and elite curlers.
In addition to her curling success, Jones has had a dynamic and multifaceted career beyond sport. She earned her law degree and practiced as a lawyer before shifting her focus to motivational speaking and television broadcasting, where she continues to engage audiences with her story of resilience, leadership, and personal growth. As a gifted communicator, she brings authenticity and optimism to everything she does.
Throughout her life, Jones has remained deeply committed to giving back. She has served on numerous volunteer boards and participated in community initiatives that support youth, sport, and women’s empowerment. In recognition of her exceptional impact, she has received several prestigious honours, including the Meritorious Service Medal from the Governor General of Canada, the King’s Coronation Medal, and the Order of Manitoba.
Even as she announced her retirement from team play in 2024 after a storied career, Jones continues to inspire. She exemplifies how to lead with strength, live with purpose, and lift others along the way, especially in the role that means the most to her: being a loving and devoted mother.

Janine Lafrenière has spent her career standing up for those whose voices are too often silenced. As Executive Director of Nipissing Transition House (NTH) since 2004, Lafrenière has been a driving force in the movement to end intimate partner violence in North Bay and the surrounding district.
Her path began on the front lines, supporting women and children fleeing abuse. Through time and exeriences, she rose to lead NTH, overseeing critical services such as emergency shelter, crisis counselling, and transitional housing support. Under her guidance, the organization grew into a pillar of safety, hope, and advocacy for survivors.
Lafrenière built bridges across a variety of public sectors, partnering with schools, law enforcement, businesses, and social service agencies to ensure comprehensive and coordinated responses to gender-based violence. She chaired the Nipissing District Violence Against Women Coordinating Committee, launching powerful public awareness campaigns like Safety Net and the One Pledge Campaign, which encouraged thousands of individuals to actively commit to creating a violence-free community.
Her work extended into classrooms, workplaces, and city streets. From organizing annual vigils for the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women, to hosting internationally recognized speakers like Jackson Katz, to championing bursaries that empower women through education, Lafrenière has consistently made space for healing and systemic change.
A tireless educator, collaborator, and advocate, Lafrenière has helped shift the community’s understanding of safety, accountability, and compassion. Her legacy is one of fierce advocacy rooted in care, and her impact will be felt for generations.

Singer-Songwriter, Storyteller, Humanitarian
William Prince’s music is a masterclass in graceful storytelling. Rooted in gratitude and humility, his songs carry a quiet power, offering reflections on his own moments of self-discovery and the larger questions we face together, ones that resonate across cultures and generations. With each performance, Prince invites listeners into a space of shared meaning, where the personal becomes universal.
Born and raised in Peguis First Nation, Prince has steadily built a catalogue of acclaimed albums, (most recently Stand in the Joy,) that trace his own journey, while offering solace and strength to others. His music has taken him from Manitoba to the Grand Ole Opry, and from national television to collaborations with artists such as Serena Ryder, The Tragically Hip, and Neil Young. Along the way, he has earned multiple JUNO Awards, the Allan Slaight Music Impact Honour, and the John Prine Songwriting Fellowship.
Prince’s influence extends beyond the stage. Time and again, he has used his platform to uplift others, including hosting A Day to Listen, through his tribute to Terry Fox, and in his contributions to national conversations on Truth and Reconciliation. Whether through a Tiny Desk concert or a heartfelt lyric, he shares his truth in ways that help others find their own.
As he continues to tour internationally and prepare new music, Prince remains grounded in his purpose: to write songs that matter and to walk with kindness. His voice has become one of the most beloved in Canadian music.

There are three elements in the Nipissing crest: the sun, the water, and the owl.
The sun, our source of light and energy, is symbolic of the illumination of learning, embracing curiosity and reason.
The water recalls the University’s connection with Lake Nipissing, source of the institution’s name (and reason for the University’s team name, “Lakers”), and bond with the Nipissing First Nation, original inhabitants of the region. Like the sun, water sustains life itself, and represents the abundant gifts of nature with which humans must live in harmony.
The Athenian owl symbolizes wisdom and scholarship, knowledge and culture. By facing forward, it represents seeing the world as it is and envisioning how it could be, which is the task and purpose of the University.
