The mask that transforms, that imitates, that frightens, carries something primordial.Through the depths of time, the mask, with its versatility, has touched every culture. This gameof concealment and revelation is used as a tool of spiritual exploration to this day. It creates a condition of transcendence, of bdistancing from the self, it abolishes identity. It allows its bearerto embody something higher – stronger. These characteristics attracted me to the mask as asymbol and an art object.

In my attempt to combine mask-making and printmaking, I was led in a process of deconstructing the volume of each mask in its two-dimensional expansion. Its pieces, with the useof soft-ground and other etching techniques, are transferred onto the zinc plate. This "pattern"forms the basis for the print.

The result of the printing process is a standalone artwork which can, however, be cut up and reassembled, assuming the original volume of the sculpt, as a three-dimensional printed mask.

The ability of the engraving matrix and the sculptural mould of the mask, to produce multiples, gave the opportunity for an experimental game of combining the patterns of the masks. By printing two plates in different colours on the same paper, I explore the effects of this combination on the marks that each mask bears after its assembly.

Sources of influence and inspiration for my work have been the stage masks of Commedia dell'arte, the warrior masks of the samurai, the ritual masks of shamanic rituals and Mycenaean funerary masks.
