For the lives you touch. You’re more important than
You touch lives. You give smiles. You are someone’s favorite person. Your health matters.
Berneta and her siblings witnessed their mother battle a rare cancer, and it taught each of them to make routine screenings a priority. Keeping appointments and going to checkups regularly saved Berneta’s life. During a physical exam, her physician found a head and neck cancer at an early, treatable stage and referred her for care. Berneta credits her mom’s example and her siblings’ support for getting her to a cancer-free life today.
Four out of 10 adults will develop cancer in their lifetime, but screening tests can catch cancer early and help save lives. Give yourself and those who love you peace of mind, schedule a routine cancer screening and take control of your health today.
To see Berneta’s story and to learn which cancer screenings might be right for you and to schedule an appointment, visit getscreenednow.com or call 314-310-7574.
Dear Friends,
It has been great seeing you around the St. Louis region this summer: at the Sheldon for Donnybash, at Grant’s Farm for Antiques Roadshow, and at Nine PBS for Storytime in the Commons.
As we celebrate summer and all that it means in St. Louis (The Muny! Cardinals' games! City SC matches! Ted Drewes!), we also want to celebrate the remarkable careers and well-deserved retirements of beloved producers Ruth Ezell and Jim Kirchherr. Jim worked at Nine PBS for 34 years and Ruth for 21. Both were founding hosts of Living St. Louis and have shared with all of us so many important and heartwarming stories. We are grateful for all they’ve done to serve the St. Louis region through storytelling.
While both Ruth and Jim officially retired at the end of June, we’ll continue to see their stories this fall. You can read more about their remarkable careers in this issue.
We also celebrate this issue—our last issue of Nine PBS Magazine. We have always been committed to being good stewards of your donations. Now, with increases in postage and printing costs alongside the funding challenges public media stations are facing, we have made the financially prudent decision to discontinue the magazine.
I promise you won’t miss out on programming updates! All magazine subscribers will receive our weekly programming highlights email and enjoy exclusive early access to events. You’ll get the latest program listings and timely updates right in your inbox. And coming soon, you’ll be able to customize your newsletters based on your interests. As always, the full TV schedule is available at ninepbs.org/schedule.
I hope you’ve seen some of the unique, online content we shared recently:
Our new online series What Do I Do With This? launched on Earth Day and was featured on PBS Digital Studios’ national feed. You can check out the latest episode at youtube.com/ninepbs. Based on your positive feedback, we’re already planning for Season 2!
I'm grateful to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch and Publisher Ian Caso, who interviewed me for his series, Winning STL. It features St. Louis leaders, and I was honored to be selected to share more about Nine PBS’s work. You can watch our conversation at the QR code below.
On behalf of all of us at Nine PBS, thank you for your continued support. I am so grateful for your generosity and love of Nine PBS. Thank you for being our champions!
Best,

The American Revolution
Airing over six consecutive nights in November 2025, this highly anticipated six-part, twelve-hour series, directed by Ken Burns, Sarah Botstein, and David Schmidt, chronicles the people who lived through America’s founding struggle, their experiences over eight difficult years of wartime, and how they created a new nation: the United States of America, where the people themselves would hold the power.
PBS LearningMedia will create classroom resources drawing on content and clips from the film, including key figures and events, life in the colonies, the causes of the war, and the consequences and legacies of the conflict.
Local support is provided by George Washington’s Mount Vernon.
Join Your Neighbors for a Special Edition of Storytime in the Commons!
Our final story time of the season is Be My Neighbor Day, where kids will learn about being a caring neighbor, meet neighborhood helpers from the St. Louis Public Library and the St. Louis Fire Department, and can get their picture taken with Daniel Tiger and Miss Elaina from the PBS KIDS series, Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood.
Fun activities are planned for the entire family! Two joyful stories will be read aloud, with the book’s pages projected onto a big video screen. Both books will be interpreted in American Sign Language.
September 6, 9:30–11 am, Public Media Commons, outside Nine PBS, in Grand Center. Free registration at ninepbs.org/events.
Be My Neighbor Day is supported by PNC Grow Up Great® with additional support from Fred Rogers Productions, the Corporation for Public Broadcasting’s Ready to Learn, The Magic House, and Raising Cane's Chicken Fingers One Love.

Keeping Kids Learning All Summer Long
Nine PBS and our community partners work yearround to connect with families and ensure children stay engaged in learning—especially during the summer months—helping them maintain academic progress and educational milestones.
In 2024, Nine PBS partnered with Breakpoint Tennis & Life Skills Academy to support children in our region by exploring the connection between physical activity and academic achievement, particularly in reading. Through this collaboration, Nine PBS’s Drawn In literacy curriculum was integrated into Breakpoint’s summer camps, reaching 130 campers.
According to the 2024 Drawn In Facilitator Survey, 80% of facilitators reported improved school readiness among campers, and 75% observed increased literacy skills.
This summer Nine PBS and Breakpoint continue their partnership to promote literacy using Drawn In The program follows four comic-book-loving kids who rely on vocabulary to overcome challenges. Campers engage with the story through comics, video clips, educational games, and supporting materials—all designed to make literacy fun and effective.
Extending Learning Beyond the Classroom
Nine PBS also provides year-round educational support for families at home. Teaching in Room 9, the region’s largest classroom, airs weekdays on Nine PBS and is designed to ensure children are ready to thrive in school. Each 30-minute episode features beloved host Dr. Sanders, along with outstanding local educators, special guests, and field trips to iconic locations such as the Saint Louis Zoo and the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis.
Every episode emphasizes literacy while also covering school readiness, social-emotional learning, STEM, and movement. In 2024, Teaching in Room 9 aired 261 times and was viewed more than 113,000 times across broadcast and digital platforms.
Students in 3rd to 5th grades can lose an average of 20% of their school-year gains in reading over the summer months.

Free Digital Resources for Families
All of Nine PBS’s high-quality educational resources are available online for free. Families can access thousands of learning tools featuring trusted PBS KIDS® characters, as well as localized resources from Teaching in Room 9 and Drawn In. These materials are designed to help caregivers support out-of-school learning throughout the year.

Producers Leave a Legacy of Heart and History
Ruth Ezell: Inspiring the Community
Unassuming but determined, Senior Producer Ruth Ezell sees her career as a series of circumstances that opened the doors she confidently walked through.
While Ruth started her broadcast journalism career on the radio at WRJAM in Detroit, she was soon captivated by the magic of television. "I loved being able to sit in a room with an editor and see the visuals of a story. ...it was wonderful.” She later worked as a television producer in Detroit (her hometown), Chicago, and Cincinnati before landing in St. Louis, and stepping out from behind the camera. For 10 years, she covered the news at 5 on Your Side.
It's not unusual for Ruth, who has won numerous awards, including the Greater St. Louis Association of Black Journalists’ Living Legend Award, to downplay her achievements but they opened doors for others, too. “Ruth has always been a really welcoming presence at Nine PBS. ...I always looked up to her, and I've learned so much from her over the past four years,” says Veronica Mohesky, Nine PBS producer.
In 2003, Ruth Ezell was recruited to join a new show, Living St. Louis. “It felt like another door had opened, but this one was to a candy store, and I got to eat all the candy I wanted.... As a reporter, you're lucky if you have a minute and 15 seconds to tell a story; we've taken as long as 10 minutes, maybe longer, to tell a story right,” she says. "We find these interesting stories that commercial TV basically doesn't have time for.
“I much prefer looking and listening, because that's how you learn. And I learned just as much from other people's mistakes as I learned from people who got everything right all the time.”
When asked about her legacy, she says, “I want to leave the world better than I found it. That’s it.”

Jim Kirchherr: Finding Just the Right Word
Executive Producer Jim Kirchherr might have casually chosen a career in broadcast, but 51 years later, his approach to reporting on issues, preserving history, and telling the stories of this region is anything but accidental.
After graduating from the University of Illinois, he began his career in radio news in Danville and Joliet, Illinois. “I think that's really where I learned to measure each and every word,” he says.
He became a familiar face in St Louis when he joined the television newsroom at KTVI in 1978. In 1987, Jim and his family moved to Munich, Germany, where he became a senior news editor at Radio Free Europe for four years. "I joked that I would have taken a job sweeping the floors at Radio Free Europe if it allowed me to live there.”
He was hired at Nine PBS in 1991 to do a weekly public affairs program, News Night. It was at Nine PBS that he cemented his legacy as this region's preeminent storyteller. For the past 34 years, Jim has elevated the issues important to the St. Louis region, enlightened our community with stories of the people, places, and organizations that make St. Louis great. And through his ability to find just the right word, he has connected our past to our present and our future.
Jim has produced countless award-winning documentaries and specials and has multiple national PBS credits. “Jim is a workhorse. He's always putting out new content, and I really admire that...,” says Molly Hart, social media coordinator.
As far as his legacy goes, he says, “I think I've set a pretty good example for producers who come into this place. ...I have worked with some very good younger people who have become good and even better than me as producers. And so, that work carries on.”

Longtime Nine PBS producers Ruth Ezell and Jim Kirchherr retired on June 30, 2025. This article is based on a script written by Senior Producer Anne-Marie Berger for the videos she produced about their distinguished careers.

The Marlow Murder Club on Masterpiece, Season 2
