Picture this: it's a frosty winter's day, and humanity suddenly decides, "You know what would be great? Running down these snow-covered hills on planks of wood!" And thus, the glorious sport of skiing was born
Way back when, probably around the time mammoths were still cool, our adventurous ancestors hopped on their early versions of skis – more like tree branches with attitude –and glided through the snowy landscapes like Viking superheroes. I honestly think that is a pretty dope way of living your life back then I'm sure they would laugh at you for paying 600 euros for a pair of skis. And poles. And boots. And a helmet. And…
Fast forward a bit (okay, a lot), and skiing had its Renaissance moment. The 19th century saw the rise of Norway as the biggest ski destination, where people in fancy mustaches and corset dresses were hitting the slopes. But skiing wasn't just a fancy affair; it was also a mode of transport Imagine the precursor to Uber, except you're chauffeured through the winter wonderland by, well, yourself. Yes I know what you are thinking about, it is your dream. Be jealous of the Norwegian!
Then, ski pioneers emerged – the kind of people who looked at snowy mountains and thought, "Hey, that looks like a great place for extreme downhill activities " Names like Hannes Schneider and Fridtjof Nansen graced the ski scene, making tracks and leaving us with a legacy of techniques and frozen fingers They also created a new way to die! Amazing.
And let's not forget the culture! Skiing isn't just about zooming down slopes at breakneck speeds – it's a lifestyle, a vibe, a whole mood You've got après-ski gatherings where people swap epic stories of their downhill escapades, often with the dramatic flair of a bard recounting ancient tales. It's a chance to wear sunglasses that would make Elton John jealous, decked out in neon ski gear that screams, "I'm here to have a snowballin' good time!"
From the adrenaline junkies speeding down black diamond trails to the leisurely explorers on cross-country odysseys, skiing brings people together like marshmallows and hot chocolate. It's a shared love for the cold, the thrill, and the art of not face-planting in front of your fellow snow enthusiasts So, as we glide through the pages of Cas's ski chapter, remember: skiing isn't just a sport; it's a reminder that humans have always been downright bonkers for a snowy adventure
Now, let's talk about what really matters:
Ah, Austria – the land of schnitzels, classical music, and one heck of a ski party! Let's dig into the frosty Austrian ski culture, where winter sports aren't just a hobby; they're a way of life.
Back in the late 19th century, when powdered wigs were finally starting to fade out of fashion, Austria caught the skiing bug. An old lad named Mathias Zdarsky decided to embrace his inner snow bunny and crafted a pair of skis from hickory wood This brave soul took to the slopes of Lilienfeld in 1896, pioneering the country's love affair with the sport. As the 20th century tiptoed in, skiing skyrocketed to popularity The Austrian Alps transformed into a playground for the well-heeled and royalty, who swooped down the mountains in what can only be described as very interesting downhill fashion Even Emperor Franz Joseph I himself hopped on the ski wagon, gracing the slopes with his royal presence
Austria went from snowy escapades to full-blown ski resort jackpot Legendary spots like St Anton and Kitzbühel became synonymous with heart-pounding descents and après-ski revelry. Imagine dashing down the slopes, only to end the day with a frothy stein of hot cocoa (or something like Jäggermeister, if you know what I mean) in a cozy mountain lodge. And when it comes to Austrian ski culture, the Hahnenkamm downhill race is the headliner Held in Kitzbühel, this white-knuckle descent has athletes hurtling down icy slopes at speeds that make cheetahs blush. It's like the Formula One of skiing, but with fewer checkered flags and way more goosebumps
Austria also birthed its own ski stars, carving through the snow with style and grace Names like Toni Sailer and Karl Schranz became household names, while Hermann Maier (the "Herminator") shredded slopes and hearts alike
But Austrian ski culture isn't just about the thrill of the downhill It's a symphony of après-ski parties, hearty alpine cuisine, and charming villages draped in snow Imagine schnapps-fueled folk music echoing through wooden chalets, and you're halfway to experiencing the après-ski vibe As technology evolved, so did Austrian ski resorts Cutting-edge lifts, swanky lodges, and even eco-friendly initiatives have found their way into the heart of Austrian ski culture. Whether you're a seasoned pro or a rookie skier, Austria's slopes offer a symphony of adventure, breathtaking views, and a sense of camaraderie that makes even après-ski selfies feel like a warm hug So there you have it, a snow-dusted glimpse into the rich and vibrant tapestry of ski culture in Austria. From imperial slopes to modern mountain marvels, Austria's love affair with skiing is a tale of exhilaration, community, and the enchanting embrace of the snow-cloaked Alps
Guten Ski!
There is a legend that this guy transforms into a mountain goat at night
Apparently this is considered good snow condition(?)
In 1922, an Austrian named Hannes Schneider invented the snowplow turn, a fundamental skiing technique that beginners still use today to control their speed and direction. Thanks to him, countless skiers have avoided becoming unintentional human snowballs.
Imagine skiing all day and then rocking out at a concert by night, all in the same ski resort. In Ischgl, Austria, they host legendary "Top of the Mountain" concerts at an altitude of 2,300 meters, featuring international artists. It's like a musical and snowy double delight!
Austria's love for skiing extends beyond the slopes. The country boasts a variety of ski museums that showcase the evolution of ski equipment, the history of the sport, and even pay tribute to iconic Austrian skiers.
Austria is a powerhouse in Alpine skiing, having produced numerous World Cup champions. Skiers like Marcel Hirscher, Annemarie Moser-Pröll, and Toni Sailer have left their tracks on the snow and etched their names into skiing history.
Austria's Arlberg region boasts a unique distinction: it's where Hannes Schneider, considered the "father of modern skiing," revolutionized ski instruction. He even ended up sharing his skills with the U.S. Army's 10th Mountain Division during World War II, contributing to the spread of skiing in the United States.
Bicycles. Two-wheeled wonders that have carried us through history, transformed societies, and taken us on exhilarating journeys From leisurely rides in picturesque parks to pulse-pounding races on the world stage, let's pedal through the captivating history and vibrant culture of cycling
The early 19th century witnessed the birth of the bicycle, a contraption that combined a passion for innovation with the quest for mobility In 1817, Karl Drais rolled out his "Laufmaschine," a wooden precursor to the modern bicycle that kick-started a revolution. With every revolution of the wheels, society gained a new mode of transportation, propelling us into an age of urban mobility.
Cycling soon became more than a means of travel; it became an emblem of change. Suffragettes in the late 19th and early 20th centuries embraced the bicycle as a symbol of freedom, using it to challenge societal norms and demand equality. The bicycle's power extended to politics, symbolizing progress and freedom of movement for all The late 19th century saw the emergence of competitive cycling. Velodromes sprung up, hosting thrilling track races that captivated audiences. And then came the grand stage of the Tour de France, an epic race that debuted in 1903, taking cyclists on a grueling journey through picturesque landscapes and proving that bicycles weren't just for leisurely strolls.
Now, let's detour to the enchanting world of Dutch cycling, where bikes reign supreme. The Netherlands isn't just a country; it's a two-wheeled utopia With more bicycles than people, the Dutch have elevated cycling to an art form and a way of life. It's not just about going from point A to B; it's about weaving through cobblestone streets, canalside paths, and tulip-lined lanes.
In the Netherlands, cycling isn't just a mode of transport; it's part of the national identity. Dutch children learn to ride before they master tying their shoelaces. Bike lanes, the true arteries of Dutch cities, are adorned with a symphony of cyclists, from students to suited professionals, gracefully gliding through the urban landscape. Dutch cycling isn't limited to leisure; it's woven into daily life Commuting by bike isn't just practical; it's a joyful ritual Children pedal to school, the wind in their hair and backpacks bouncing. Professionals breeze through morning traffic, their bikes serving as mobile offices It's efficient, sustainable, and deeply embedded in the Dutch psyche.
The Netherlands proudly exports its cycling culture. Dutch bike experts share knowledge with the world, transforming urban landscapes from Bogotá to Tokyo Bike-friendly city planning and infrastructure have become a soft-power tool, forging connections and promoting healthier, greener communities worldwide.

In a world that spins faster by the day, a timeless concept has taken root – sustainability This isn't just a buzzword; it's a philosophy that shapes our choices, redefines progress, and lays the foundation for a future that's both vibrant and enduring So, let's dive into the very essence of sustainability – its origins, its significance, and the vital role it plays in our world.
Sustainability isn't a newfangled idea; it's rooted in ancient wisdom. Indigenous cultures understood the delicate balance between humans and nature, passing down traditions that emphasized harmony and stewardship. But it was in the 20th century that sustainability gained global attention Visionaries like Rachel Carson, with her book "Silent Spring," and the 1972 Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment ignited a spark of environmental consciousness that has since grown into a blazing global movement
At its core, sustainability isn't merely about recycling or planting trees – though those are essential actions. It's about nourishing a delicate equilibrium between social, economic, and environmental dimensions. It's about recognizing that our actions ripple through time, affecting generations yet unborn Sustainability means living today without compromising tomorrow – a task that requires us to rethink, innovate, and collaborate on a scale never before imagined
Sustainability stands on three sturdy pillars, forming what's often called the "triple bottom line." The first pillar is the planet – safeguarding ecosystems, reducing carbon footprints, and preserving biodiversity The second is people – promoting social justice, ensuring equitable access to resources, and nurturing vibrant communities. The third is prosperity –fostering economic growth that doesn't strip resources but rather enriches lives and empowers futures
And isn't just an abstract ideal; it's a call to action that resonates at every level Individuals make daily choices that echo through the environment. Industries rethink processes, striving for cleaner, more efficient practices Governments craft policies that balance progress with preservation. From rooftop gardens to solar-powered cities, from fair-trade coffee to eco-friendly fashion, sustainability has become a lens through which we view progress.it's a necessity driven by urgency. Our planet's resources are finite, and the impacts of climate change, pollution, and inequality are undeniable The future hinges on our choices today. Embracing sustainability isn't just about altruism; it's about safeguarding our own well-being and that of generations to come
Imagine a world where lush forests thrive, clean waters flow, and communities flourish. Sustainability isn't just an aspiration; it's a legacy we're crafting for the future By embracing sustainable practices, we're sowing the seeds of hope – ensuring that the planet we leave behind is not a barren wasteland, but a haven of possibility
So, as we navigate the challenges and opportunities of our times, let's remember that sustainability isn't just a concept; it's the essence of a thriving world we're shaping together Through mindful choices and collective action, we're steering the course towards a future that's abundant, equitable, and rich with promise.

As the vegan movement gains momentum, its impact extends beyond the individual plate. Restaurants expand their vegan options, food companies develop plant-based alternatives, and entire communities shift towards more sustainable choices. Through every meal, every conversation, and every choice, vegans are fostering a broader conversation about our interconnectedness with the planet and its inhabitants.

Picture this: a swanky establishment where no reservation is required, no luggage is needed, and all the guests are bugs! Yes, you read that right – insect hotels are the latest buzz in town. So, grab your imaginary luggage, and let's check into this quirky bug paradise, where the only thing crawling is the excitement
First off, let's get one thing straight – bugs aren't being high maintenance here They're not asking for room service or a turn-down service. These mini suites serve a higher purpose. Insect hotels provide a safe haven for our tiny friends They're like bug fortresses, offering shelter from predators, cozy spots for raising bug babies, and even a place to catch some z's between pollinating plants.
Gardeners, conservationists, ecologists and Cas Raedts, recognized the importance of insects like solitary bees, ladybugs, lacewings, and other beneficial creatures in maintaining healthy ecosystems. However, urbanization, habitat loss, and pesticide use were creating challenges for these insects Insect hotels were conceived as a way to offer artificial nesting sites and shelter, mimicking the natural habitats that insects require for nesting, breeding, and overwintering
Crafted from a variety of materials such as wood, bamboo, twigs, pine cones, and more, these hotels provide a range of nooks and crannies for insects to find refuge. The hotels often incorporate different compartments, each catering to specific insects' needs. For example, solitary bees might appreciate hollow tubes as nests, while ladybugs might prefer cozy crevices to spend the night. As the concept gained traction, individuals and organizations began constructing and placing these quirky bug abodes in gardens, parks, and urban spaces. Insect hotels became a way to engage communities in promoting biodiversity, educating about the importance of pollinators, and creating insect-friendly environments.
So, the next time you spot an insect hotel, give it a nod. It's not just a bunch of twigs and leaves; it's a bug oasis, a pollinator party, and a pit stop for critters on the go It's a whimsical reminder that the tiniest creatures play the biggest roles in keeping our ecosystems buzzing with life.

3 cups of wheat flour
1 cup of warm water (or a bit more)
3 tablespoons of oil (soybean, corn, or sunflower)
1 tablespoon of cachaça (or some type of brandy or firewater)

When the dough is becoming stiff, add more water, and if it's too sticky, add more flour. The dough should be soft but may be slightly sticky.
On a floured surface, roll out the dough until it's very thin.
Fill as desired and seal with a fork or the back of a knife.
