Machars Veterinary Services Ltd have had the pleasure and the privilege to look after the health and welfare of the herd at Upper Barr for the last 4 years.
The herd has been ‘closed’ for over 5 years now with the result that the farm are producing lovely, uniform heifers which are well grown and quietly handled.
Upper Barr is on a 4-yearly TB testing regime, with the last test conducted in June 2025. There is no history of TB infection or breakdowns in the herd. The farm has BVD negative status with all animals on holding having individual negative status.
Johnes testing is carried out quarterly through individual milk serology and consistently demonstrates very low levels of infection in the herd.
The breeding herd are fully vaccinated against BVD & IBR.
Routine fertility visits are conducted at weekly intervals with Upper Barr achieving some excellent results in this area. The 12m rolling average results for the farm yield an impressive preg rate of 29%, submission rate of 64% and a conception rate of 4 5%.
Clinical mastitis incidences are low in the herd and excellent quality milk is produced with an average bulk tank SCC of 157,000/ml. Milk constituents at Upper Barr over the last 12 months have averaged 4.05% butterfat & 3.36% protein.
Overall disease incidence within the milking herd is extremely low and is testament to the quality of the animals being produced at Upper Barr and the care and skill with which they are managed.

The Upper Barr Holstein herd was established in 1994 by Craig McMiken with the farm situated south of the famous market town of Newton Stewart in the south west of Scotland. This special sale features ALL the most recently calved cows and heifers with the aim to reduce numbers in the sheds to give space to accommodate the large numbers of heifers to calve in 2026.
The herd is currently averaging 9058kgs at 4.02% butterfat and 3.29% protein with an average somatic cell count of 157 and the Calving Index is running at 374 days. The herd is All-Year-Round calving and the current Days In Milk for this impressive sale group is 76. The herd is managed in cubicles throughout the year and milked twice a day, the TMR is grass silage with a blend and cows are topped up to yield in the parlour. The fertility within the herd is as good as it gets with a 12-month rolling average that’s impressive; preg rate of 29%, submission rate of 64% and a conception rate of 45%. with the majority served with sexed semen.
This special selected group comprises 51 heifers in milk, 34 cows in their second, 21 cows in their third and 16 cows milking in their fourth lactation. They are producing oceans of milk with several cows giving over 50kgs with the entire sale group averaging 36kgs!
Genus ABS has been the genetic provider since the herd was established, and their RMS mating programme has been used for over 20 years. The results of this mating programme are impressive with what can only be described as a modern dairy cow, moderate in stature with ample width of chest and rump, powerful deep wide frames, strong functional feet and legs with cows that carry body condition throughout the whole lactation. The best part of the Upper Barr cows is the quality of udder! The younger cows and heifers are sired by Bomaz Vader, Denovo Kimmel, Boghill Glamour Skeletor & Denovo Saxon Red.
The herd is vaccinated for IBR & BVD. They are all BVD tested negative and testing for Johnes has been ongoing several years with low levels in the herd. Upper Barr Farm is in a four year TB testing area and the last herd test was in June 2025 and there has never been a case on the farm.
I highly recommend this sale to all milk producers in the market for modern, high producing Holstein cattle. Speaking from experience I know these cattle go on a do well, they have the ability and potential to produce oceans of milk in more intensive systems.
