A Hear My Voice & Dearne Valley Landscape Partnership Project

About Hear My Voice Hear My Voice is a Barnsley based programme of creative opportunities, activities and poetry themed events, designed to engage, stimulate and inspire interest in the spoken and written word.

In the first year Barnsley Museums inaugurated Ian McMillan as Barnsley’s first ever Poet Laureate to drive the project forward. Within his role he has created a plethora of works to mark and interpret key events in Barnsley’s calendar, and acted as a Champion and ambassador for the programme.

Over 300 primary school children have been engaged in creative workshops, alongside tailored

events and workshops to target new audiences, people from a whole range of backgrounds and interests have discovered a new found love of poetry.

Hear My Voice has been generously funded by Barnsley TUC Training Ltd and programmed and delivered by Barnsley Museums, with support from the Dearne Valley Landscape Partnership.

To Make My Ideal Home You Will Need... a pot of peas and a pan of beans, and left over sweets, a whole set of teeth and a pot of joy you will need a fresh little boy.

Introduction One of the great privileges of being an author is being able to meet and work with lots of different and exciting people, and in all the years I’ve been lucky enough to do this job, I don’t think I’ve enjoyed working anyone more that the writers on the amazing Hear My Voice project.

It has been so much fun. And a lot of hard work too. Over four hours and two visits to Worsbrough Primary School, working with Mrs Charlesworth’s class, we learned that everyone can write something brilliant - as you’ll see - and that everyone has a voice that deserves to be heard.

The project’s aim was to write about ‘home’ and we have explored everything that that could mean - from the buildings we will live in and the people we live with, to our town and its surrounding areas - landscapes, animals, wildlife, history - everything.

We’ve designed our ideal homes, we’ve taken people on a tour of our town. We’ve been birds flying above it, swooping down to see what we can see. We have even had alien visitors exploring where we live.

And it’s a huge pleasure to have produced this book of the writers’ work. I don’t want to hold you up from reading what’s inside so, go, read, enjoy and see what home really means.

Harley Oldham Over Barnsley When I flew over Barnsley I soared and I saw the big red house, people riding their motorbikes like a pro.

The green trees were very light.

And the dog owners walking their dogs.

Then I saw cats, left outside and there were other birds, flying.

I played with the other birds and when I got tired I sat and had a rest and I saw white windmills spinning around, every second.

Then I saw the blazing hot sun shining at me.

I flew down to the ground and I ate some bread and then I flew up to the sky and I played with the birds a bit longer, but we got tired, so we stopped.

So we took a break on the rooves.

And we flew up after we’d had a rest and we saw the lights shining for the people to walk home after they’d been to their friends to play.

And I saw the giant, green trees swaying their leaves around and the lovely plants,

that are starting to grow.

And my friends playing on the tyre park.

And then I flew a bit further and I saw farmers planting seeds.

And I saw his dogs running wild.

And the people at the fish shop licking their lips because they want to eat it, and I saw the gravestones with the dead people buried in the second layer.

And I went a bit further and I saw the little kids.

Jet Macinnes If Barnsley Was a whale, I could tell a massive tale about the people who lived there.

They don’t have time to spare but they’d have lovely hair.

While you ate a pear they went to the fair where they got a scare.

Theo Bentley My Home My bedroom is like an ELEPHANT because it’s so huge.

My dog is like an elephant too.

My brother is a cow, my auntie is a mouse, my uncle is a sloth but my mum is like chocolate.

Holly White-Mellor To Make My Ideal Home You Will Need: a a a a a a a a a a a a

spoonful of happiness, cup full of funny, dish full of craziness, pot full of love, jug full of fluffiness, garden full of trampolines, bedroom full of beds and TVs kitchen full of tasty food, living room full of cats and dogs, secret room full of my family, front garden full of pink, soft, grass, small room full of cute toys.

If you were in my home you would feel: excited, happy, warm, and snuggly.

Harrison Dudley To My Ideal Home You Will Need A pet hamster, a pet cat, one pet dog, and then another pet dog a pet fish, another pet fish, a pet cuckoo, a pet called Zeus a pet pig a pet colbzoo 1 lazy Nick 2 lambs 3 set 4 Harrison

Tyler Parkin My Ideal Home Will: be extended into a mansion, to have a football pitch in the back garden and have a grand shed with Messi and Ronaldo and their girlfriends living there.

And in my shed I want six quads

four motorbikes four motor buggies two Lamborghini one Bugatti ten go-karts and a whole bedroom filled with sock football books.  

Welcome To Barnsley, Aliens Hello, aliens, welcome to Barnsley.

You will see people playing different games that you won’t know about, like Bulldog, football, and many more.

Hello aliens, we have cats that wear huge hats and cars that are designed to take you far away.

In a second I will tell you about a bit more.

I see horses with paws like Santa Claus with Miss Claws.

Chloe Darn To Make My Ideal Home You Will Need 3 cosy beds, like a soft teddy bear; 1 3 year old brother no - make it a bit nicer; 1 fish tank with 10 fish; 12 teddy bears to make it cosier; 1 giant playroom with loud music like a parade; 1 bedside desk for my bright lamp; and 1 cocoa before bed so I can rest my head.

If you were in my home you would feel joyful.

Ruby Richardson To Make my Ideal Home You Will Need 1 annoying brother, 1 teaspoon of care, a mad, barking dog to make it a bit noisy, 3 cups of warmth so it won’t freeze, and 2 eggs of love.

If you were in my home you would feel warm and supported.

Jamie Shaw To Make my Ideal Home You Will Need: A little bunny to play with forever.

And a Peter Rabbit Bed! If you were in my home you would feel happy.

Jet Macinnes To Make My Ideal Home You Will Need... a pot of peas and a pan of beans, and left over sweets.

You will need: a whole set of teeth and a pot of joy you will need a fresh little boy.

You will need a ruler so you can measure, your pot of treasure you don’t need all this pressure!

I need to get the train so I can get to the plane before it rains.

To make it ideal you will need to peel a clover so you can put another.

If you were in my house you would feel welcome and happy and warm but it’ll change your form.

It will make you write a report and you will eat a can but you will jump in a pan.

Ruby Richardson If Barnsley Was a Penguin It would be the biggest, the tallest and the WIDEST penguin EVER.

Connie Lawton To Make My Ideal Home You Will Need Lots of chocolate for a tree, 10 windows, lots of bricks to build a MASSIVE house a cool kitchen for my drinks and food three bedrooms for me, my sis, and my mum, 4 extra rooms: a dressing rooms my pet’s room, a dance room, and a hot tub room with a McDonald’s next door.

My room needs a cosy bed with a desk so I can go on ROBLOX! (Yay!) If you were in my house you would feel relaxed and happy.

Libby Law If Barnsley Was a Penguin it would be the biggest, widest, tallest, penguin in the whole wide world.

It would fly around the world and never come back!

This penguin lives in the north of England and it comes out every day.

Chloe Dam If Barnsley Was a Penguin it would be cold.

The penguin would be in a bikini and she would wear a big, gold, necklace with bright, red high heels.

She would have big, dangly, earrings and she would be friendly.

Leah Kelsey To Make My Favourite Home You Need to Know My living room is nice and warm and has a huge TV on a lovely stand so I can watch my favourite films.

My kitchen is cool because it smells really nice and my mum and dad cooks really delicious food.

I like my kitchen.

In my bathroom I have a really nice, cool, bath and some nice stickers saying: ‘Nicely warmed bath,’ My room is what I wanted it to be.

I have lots of toys and a comfy bed to rest my head and drift off into my dreams.

Zack Hatton My Home Turn my mum into a huge I don’t care, I will just use as my mum for my mum to live in.

And I really wish I could make my mum into a tree.

Callum Clayton To Make My Home A motorbike that’s ever lasting a white window in every room a massive chocolate cake with fluffy cream that bubbles in your mouth, a bath that’s covered in pink, fluffy baths and a cat that’s clean is best for me.

Thomas Law To Make My Home You Will Need: a bed comfier than a fluffy cushion, and a BIG whoopee cushion, a small pig, smelling of jewels, and an annoying brother who’s king of the fools.

A swimming pool, a chicken stool.

If you were in my house you would feel giddy.

Ruby Burton To Make My Ideal Home You Will Need... glitter and sparkles to make it warm.

Also, you will need happiness.

But, this is the best thing:

put a trampoline in the garden!

Also, two swimming pools (already built) and bouncy castles in the garden that never, ever, goes down or even gets popped if sharp things hit it hard.

Also, put gymnastics things there so I can do gymnastics whenever I want.

Keira Malin To Make My Ideal Home You Will Need... squidgy marshmallows to make my sister squidgy, sweet sugar to make very, very, very, very strong she is so annoying you can put some mushrooms in Fry her in a frying pan and put in five pieces of chocolate peel some potato skin and put in some chocolate that has melted.

If you go upstairs there will be a big pot of sausages if you like sausages you may well like moggies I know it’s not a real word but, anyway...

If you visit my house it will be... scary and terrifying very, very much.

Harley Oldham To Make My Home I Will Need 10,000 pots of joy 1 fresh cup of tea to rest, as many spare sweets for my family and a whole family waiting for me.

2 Ferraris to go to Skegness with my friends 10,000 Bentleys 2 bass dogs 100 quads infinity motorbikes 4 racing motorbikes, 2 machines for my family 1 comfy bed to rest after watching the boxing.

If you were in my house you would feel excited and surprised.

Hello Aliens!

You have just landed in Barnsley, and you could see a car that looked like a snail that huffed and puffed with smoke.

And that car, that looked like a snail, you sit in it and see a big, round, circle.

And that big, round circle is for steering

so you don’t crash like a blind cat.

The big, round steering wheel in the middle has a horn that screams like a cat.

And there is a road and the car that looked like a snail and huffed and puffed white smoke.

And on the road there are white lines and on each lane there is an arrow and those arrows are pointing different ways and if it’s pointing forwards you push the peddle that says forward.

If you car is on the other side of the lane and you don’t want to go that way you use the steering wheel that I mentioned a long time ago and you turn it right and when you are in the lane you push the peddle I mentioned one minute ago.

Hello aliens, you’ve flown across the sky and landed in Barnsley.

You will have a big surprise, lots of things are different, they might be scary but no need to worry, people in Barnsley are very friendly.

People in Barnsley wear earrings, bracelets, necklaces

this is what most girls wear.

We want you to know - don’t be scared!

You don’t want to be scared there are big spiders, hamsters and more, would you like to come with me and explore?

On the way I will tell you some more.

Well, what we’re seeing is mysterious stuff they’re called animals, I’ll have you know.

This is a cat, and this is a dog, this is a horse and this is a hog.

This is a cow, this is a sheep, you sometimes count them when you go to sleep.

In my tree there is a bird chirping.

Next door there is a child miner looking after lost children and there’s an Aldi.

There’s this shop near called One Stop and you get electric and gas from it for your house.

I can see my dad’s funny hat on the stairs.

I can see my cat strolling in my garden and I can see my dog in my back garden.

My dad’s hat is grey but he spray paints and it’s gone a bit red.

Aliens, This is Barnsley You have landed in Barnsley.

This is a park and this is a bush with things we eat.

This is a radiator that lets out heat.

This is a cat what? Where’s your hat?

This is a car it will take you far.

This is a school it’s very cool.

This is a shoe that people wear when going to the loo.

I’m a human, not like you, man!

Milly Brown I Flew When I flew over Barnsley I soared and I saw Mrs Chawreth saying, ‘Be quiet, children.’

I heard people chanting at Oakwell stadium saying ‘England, England!’

Then there is The Dearne I got my tadpoles from there

and my Uncle Craig has some brothers in a village near to it.

Then, nine weeks after we let them go.

It was very hard for me to let them go.

I was crying me head off.

Next week we went to pick up my Uncle’s brother and I saw one of my frogs.

Aliens In Barnsley, you might see a 10 foot mouse because you are very small.

Here is a cherry tree, you might call them berry bees.

You might see a comfy settee while you’re having your tea.

Here is a fruit bowl you may call it a toot bowl.

Here is a brew you might call it shampoo.

Jet Macinnes Hello, Aliens Hello, aliens, this is a house you might call it a massive mouse.

This is a clap, you probably call it a mousetrap.

Well, perhaps we should sit and talk about those gaps.

This is a park with a bush with things that we eat here is a radiator that lets out heat.

When I Flew Over Barnsley, I soared and I saw People walking their dogs looking at hogs.

In went people, looking at trees avoiding the bees I’ve just realised this world is free.

We are having fun under the sun eating buns.

Don’t point the gun.

Ok, we’re done.

Kian McDermott When I Flew Over Barnsley I Soared And I saw a school with boys and girls, learning and people queueing for fish and chips, mmmm, mmmm, yum, yum, chickens laying their eggs people going to Morrisons for their tea and people waking up in the morning they have a cup of tea.

I’m thirsty too.

Aliens Hello aliens, you will see a car that looks like an oval with circles and red bricks that stack up like a wall.

And big metal, breathing fire dragons that fly in the sky.

And birds that cut worms and they fly.

But not everybody is like me some people are mean and some are nice and some look different with different skin and long hair.

Theo Bentley Over Barnsley When I flew over Barnsley I soared and I saw a massive car park called Lock Park and I saw a statue of Joseph Lock and on top of the tree were lots of leaves blowing and I saw an awesome tyre park and I saw a bench with people having a picnic.

Hello aliens, welcome to Barnsley.

You will see huge bricks that make schools, houses, and buildings.

And fast, enormous snails with windows and you might see metal, steal birds in the sky it is so high it will look like a fly.

Harrison Dudley When I flew over Barnsley...

I soared and I saw hundreds of leafy, green trees shedding their leaves like dog hair and a colossal metal cylinder flying in the air.

Hello Aliens In the UK you’ll see water, cold and bold and smooth, like ice.

Chloe Darn I Flew Over Barnsley When I flew over Barnsley I soared and I saw a shopping centre. I wanted to know what it was called. I flew in for a closer look... it was called Morrison’s. I flew into the shop and saw these weird things that people love. They had got birding out.

I saw a human. I flew down to talk. She was putting birding in her pocket.

I said, ‘Can I have a birding?’

She asked what birding was so I flew off, across a pond. I came in to see what it was; it was a reservoir. I did not know what it was.

I asked someone, ‘What is a reservoir?’

She said, ‘Oh, it is a lovely place where people can have a lovely, calm walk without any fears.

I said, ‘I see, but I’m going to have to go to explain.’

So I flew off, and saw a building it was called, where I come from, a tweeting, I went in and saw a man. I asked him ‘What is this fun, rocking place?’

He replied, ‘It’s called a pub.’

I thought it was called a tweeting. I was embarrassed so I flew away again.

I wanted to see a benching. I finally saw one. I flew down to talk to a boy.

I said, ‘Can I play with you in a benching?’

‘This place is called a park,’ he said.

‘Oh, where I come from, it’s called a benching.

He said, ‘Well, you’re wrong.’

I flew away. There was a swimming pool. I saw a light that said Swimming Pool.

Well, I think I’ve had enough exploring for one day. Hope to do better the next day. Time to go then. The light’s out. Good night!

Hello aliens, you’ve landed in Barnsley.

We may seem frightening but you’ll make friends fast as lightning.

It’s time to tell you about our place you may think we’ve got such a weird face.

Have you seen cars?

They’re the big, coloured things we use to get around in quicker.

And your skin is much thicker than ours.

I Flew Over Barnsley When I flew over Barnsley I soared and I saw a fish shop at the bottom of the big hill; the ice cream van selling ice cream.

I can see the windmill standing in the distance as white as snow but still a bit dirty.

Tyler Parkin Barnsley Gnomes When I flew over Barnsley I soared and I saw hundreds of leafy, green trees shedding their leaves like dog hair and I saw people in the park and they looked like garden gnomes.

I could see aeroplanes towering above me like metal, indestructible birds.

Wafting up my nose was a smell of bacon sandwiches, hum, hum!!!

Alfie Tidy Over Barnsley When I flew over Barnsley I could see toy shops and homes, lots of them.

I saw hundreds of leafy, green trees shedding their leaves like dog hair.

I could see planes and cars.

I saw a nice picnic.

There were cakes and crisps and jelly.

And I could see shops and there were lots of clothes and bags and shelves.

I could see lots of birds.

In one of the shops there was lots of food.

And there were lots of trees and grass

and there were schools and lots of children.

And lots of pens and a closed playground.

And there was a Metrodome with arm bands with all the swimming kit in hands.

And in the school there was a football in the trees.

There were apples that were red and juicy and it was very tidy in my home.

There were cats and dogs.

And in the sky there were clouds and in the sky, again, were birds and all of the sky creatures.

And there was a wild forest.

Make My House Make my bedroom have a sofa and lamps at the side.

Make my house have a massive garden with red flowers.

Even Frig and Makriv in my room again I have a computer set up with a video in.

There would be a red rug on the floor.

What would you feel in my house?

Excited, happy, joyful, AMAZED.

Hello Aliens Hello aliens, you have arrived in Barnsley.

You will see a beautiful football pitch.

You will see a beautiful, shiny water fountain.

You might see a beautiful helicopter flying in the shiny, blue sky.

You might see mechanical machines, like a car and you might see a stable with some horses and hay as well.

You might see some buildings some are homes and schools.

And if you look up you will see the sun and it is very, very shiny and if it is dark you will see the moon.

And if you go in a space rocket and blast off then you will see lots of planets.

And do you learn? It’s called school.

My favourite is maths.

Did you know there are pigs and cows and horses and all sorts so there is a zoo and there are monkeys and zebra and giraffes.

And I think there are lions.

John Firth Hello, aliens, Welcome to Barnsley First, before you live in Barnsley you have to understand a few, simple, rules.

First, you’ll need to learn English and, here, you might see houses.

They might not be like yours.

Flew Over Barnsley I flew over Barnsley and saw a huge tree and eight windmills and people walking their dogs and people getting on the huge school bus.

I saw kids playing in the park sliding down the enormous slide.

It looked very small from up here but here is Barnsley and I am a bird.

Olivia Jane Hemsworth-Sagar Hello, Aliens, You’ve Landed in Barnsley You might see a very big thing, and that is called a bus but you do not stand in front of it or else you will get squashed.

Also, there’s this thing but I would not sit on it if I were you because it’s been polished and you might slide off it so be careful.

One more thing there are these things called house.

I live in one.

You can come any time.

My door is 44 and there are lots of people to play with.

Holly Mellor Over Barnsley When I flew over Barnsley I soared and I saw a huge park and lots of houses and school and a town and buses.

And I saw people walking their cute, small puppies and cute cats, running about the green field.

People were skipping to the red and blue bus.

I also saw a giant cinema and Metrodome.

I also saw this cool place called The Alhambra and people were walking to the shops.

I also saw a small car on the road driving really fast faster than a race car and there are some high apple trees.

Hello Aliens!

You are in Barnsley.

First of all I will tell you what things are.

Houses may look strange to you but they are not to us.

In houses there are chairs, TVs, and bed and cookers. Cookers

are for cooking what we eat, like chips, bread, chocolate bars, and chicken nuggets.

You are wondering what chickens are.

They are animals, like cats, dogs and hamsters and fish.

There are schools that children learn in.

Outside there are tall, green trees and parks.

If you’re wondering what parks are they have swings and stuff you can play on.

There are shops that you can buy food from.

There are pens and pencils that you write with: hold it, get some paper, and write words.

On the roads there are cars and vans.

You sit on the seat and put your hands on the giant wheel and press the pedals.

If you are wondering what I am, I am a human.

We have hands, feet, toes, fingers, and a face with noses, mouths, eyes and ears.

Also, I saw expensive, nice houses and the massive park where people play.

Also I saw tall and small people walking.
