Task 10: Create a Video Q & A Booth

Task 10: Create a video Q&A booth In this task you create your own video booth so that students can ask you questions and you can record video answers for them. You will need to have a webcam on your computer to do this task. Creating a video booth is a great way to increase engagement with your students and make yourself more available to answer their questions. You can also get students to set up their own video booth and ask and answer each others’ questions.

Before you create your video booth you can look at one I created. Go to: http://vyou.com/ nikpeachey . Click on some of the questions next to the video. You should see and hear my recorded answers. Type a question into the box below the image and send it to me.

Now create your own video booth. First you need to register so, go to: http://vyou.com/ and click on ‘Join Now’. Enter your email address and click on ‘Send’.

You should then get an email with a link to confirm your email address. Click on the link when you receive it. This will then take you to the registration page. Create a user name and password, agree to the terms of use and then click on ‘Next’ at the bottom of the page.

NB: You can link the site to your Twitter or Facebook accounts, but don’t do this now. You can decide later if you want to do it.

Now create your profile. Create the unique URL for your VYou homepage and give it a name (As you can see in the image below, I’ve named mine ‘technogogy’). You can also add some brief bio information and then click on ‘Next’.

Now choose 3 topics that your Q&A will be about. Click and drag the topics to the boxes.

Don’t worry too much about how accurate they are. Then scroll to the bottom of the page a click on ‘Finish’.

The next thing you’ll need to do is create the short videos people see when they come to your page and after they ask you a question. To do this click on ‘Video Profile Setup’

You will then be able to create the a short waiting video. To do this click on ‘Record your waiting video’ .

You then see a square window appear. You may see a smaller window inside it asking you to allow access to your video webcam and audio. Make sure you ‘Allow’.

Once you click on allow you should be able to see an image of yourself from your webcam. If you don’t see this, right click on the window and select ‘Settings’ to select your microphone and webcam.

All you need to do now is click the record button and it will start to record your waiting video.

Try to look friendly and approachable while this is happening.

Click on the ‘Stop’ button when you think you have enough and then you can either watch your clip, record it again or click to ‘Save’ it. You’ll be asked to name the video, just type in your name to this first one.

Now you’ll need to record your ‘No response’ video. This is the one visitors see after they have submitted a question. When you record it, say something like ‘Thanks for the question. I’ll answer it soon.’ Click on the record no response button and save your clip.

Once you have done that you can click a link and go to your profile / Q&A homepage.

Now type in a few basic questions in the space below the video. This will get things started.

Start with some basic information questions like, ‘Where are you from?’ etc. Type the questions in and then click on ‘Send’.

Once you have added a few questions, go to ‘My Messages’ at the top of the screen.

This will take you to your ‘inbox’ where the questions go when people send them to you.

Next to the message with the question, click on ‘Create response’.

Now you can record your video response to the question. You do this by clicking on the large pink button. You will then be asked who you want the message to be seen by. Select ‘Everyone’, then record the message in the same way you did for the other clips.

Once you have recorded your answer, you can go back to your homepage and you should see the question to the right of your waiting video. Click on it and you will see your answer.

Now you are ready to share your Q&A page with your students, so just send them the link and get them to start asking you questions, but be sure they know they’ll have to wait a little for the answers. © Nik Peachey

You could also get your students to set up their own Q&A video booth and start asking each other questions.

Follow up Write an entry in your Penzu Journal (from Task 1) and record your first impressions of this tool and ho you think students might react to using it.

Think about the ways you could use the video booth with your students.
