What is the technology and active ingredient in Prebona Disinfect K?

• The patented technology behind Prebona Disinfect K, Prebona CompoTech, is based on surface modified silica particles and utilizes active ingredients in a highly effective way.

The active ingredients in Prebona Disinfect K are copper(II)sulphate pentahydrate/CASnumber7758-99-8 and cinnamaldehyde/CASnumber 104-55-2

These active ingredients are included in the ECHA 95-list as surface disinfectant (PT2) and regulatory approved within the EU including the UK, Switzerland and Norway to be used for the disinfection of surfaces, materials, equipment and furniture.

• PT2-defined usage areas include swimming pools, aquariums, bathing and other waters; air conditioning systems; and walls and floors in private, public, and industrial areas and in other areas for professional activities.

The current Pandemic is fundamentally changing the way we interact with each other at home, at the work-place and in societies across the globe. Every day we come into contact with a variety of surfaces. From touch points such as door handles or touch screens to desktops and tools, packaging and textiles. Is the active ingredient in Prebona Disinfect K effective against Coronavirus (SARS-COV2) causing COVID 19?

Yes! The active ingredient copper(II)sulphatepentahydrate/CASnumber7758-99-8(Cu2+) is proven effective against Coronavirus causing SARS-COV2

„A variety of respiratory pathogenic agents such as influenza, SARSCoV, MERS-CoV, and HCoV have been exposed to a variety of copper forms (copper alloy dry surface, sodium copper, ionic copper oxide, copper iodide, Cu2+, and lay copper) in several cultivating media (MDCK, metal, textile, aqueous solution, dry surfaces), having similar results and arriving at the same conclusion: copper is capable to inhibit, inactivate, reduce, and irreversibly destroy coronavirus, influenza virus, and other pathogenic agents in a matter of minutes. A recent study has evaluated and compared SARS-CoV-1 and SARS-CoV-2 stability and decay rates in aerosols, copper (metallic plate at 99% of copper), cardboard, stainless steel, and plastic. Despite significant reduction on infectivity of SARS-CoV 1 and SARS-CoV 2 after 3 h in aerosols, 72 h on plastic, and 48 h on stainless steel, the virus remained infectious. On the other hand, after exposition on copper, no viable virus was observed after 8 h and after 4 h for SARS-CoV-1 and SARS-CoV-2, respectively. Perhaps, these data suggest a higher effect of copper on SARS-CoV-2. Based on the reviewed literature, copper nanoparticles together with efficient usage of oxygen appears to be the most effective formulation against coronaviruses“.

The time SARS-CoV-2 virus remains infectious on a surface is determined by the nature of that surface, in particular the material the surface is made of, e.g. copper, cardboard, stainless steel and plastic.

A study by van Doremalen shows that the time SARS-CoV-2 virus remains infectious on a surface is determined by the nature of that surface, in particular the material the surface is made of, e.g. copper, cardboard, stainless steel and plastic, see picture 1. From this study it is apparent that surfaces made of coppar destroys virus effectively and fast while virus survives for a long time on other surfaces.

A general overview of the technology behind Prebona Disinfect K

Prebona Compotech - The unique & proprietary technology platform behind Prebona Disinfect K

Our technology platform, Prebona CompoTech, allows us to functionalize silica particles (SiO2) at atomic level. We use natural ingredients and turn them into effective dispersions – without using energy such as temperature or pressure in an waste-free production process. We start with silica particles of well-defined size dispersed in de-ionized water. The surface of the silica particles is modified with a coupling agent to enable the attachment of specific atoms (the active ingredient) to provide it´s desired functionality. In the case of Prebona Disinfect K the desired funtionality is anti-microbial protection.

Prebona Disinfect K is not alcohol-based but water-based! Prebona Disinfect K is based on silica particles, dispersed in water and surface modified with small amount of copper (Cu2+) as the active ingredient (0,05%) to achive its long lasting effect on surfaces.

Copper (Cu2+) has well established and undoubted anti-microbial properties. This is well documented within the scientific community and proven beyond any doubt. The main reasons why copper (Cu2+) is a globally recognized disinfectant, is the combination of antimicrobial efficacy and safety in use.

Copper atoms are attached to the surface of a silica particle and will therefore be able to interact with it’s surroundings and perform it’s disinfection task. The huge active surface of the silica particles (between 150-500 m2 per gram) creates an enormous exposure of the attached copper atoms. This way, Prebona Disinfect K charged with copper atoms can combat various kinds of microorganisms using hundreds of times less copper compared to competing technologies. Furthermore, it offers several advantages such as broad-spectrum activity against bacteria and virus and lower tendency to induce resistance.

Once the water has evaporated, the functionalized silica-particles will form an irreversible grid-structure (non-nano) and create a protective matrix on the selected surface. This is the main reason why Prebona Disinfect K sticks/adheres so good to various surfaces, including textiles and cannot easily be washed away. It sticks to the surface and keeps working over time through a slow-release process of its active ingredient.
