GIRLS IN THE GAME GRADUATE THESIS

I LOVE SPORTS. THEY HAVE BEEN A HUGE PART OF MY LIFE FOR AS LONG AS I CAN REMEMBER. THAT PHOTO IS ME AT AGE SIX IN MY SOCCER GEAR. HOW DID I GET HERE? My parents signed me up for soccer when I was five years old and I never looked back, I loved it. We tried other things like Girls Scouts and judo, but soccer always won out. I even bargained with my mom that I would stay in soccer FOREVER if she let me quit Girl Scouts. When I was around 11 years old and more observant about things around me, I started to wonder why I was even playing soccer. At the time there was no professional women’s soccer league, the Olympics are just every 4 years and I was too young and I didn’t realize there was soccer at the college level. Why am I even wasting my time, I remember thinking. I loved soccer and still do to this day, but I started to question why as an 11 year old girl my athlete role models were all men. My bedroom walls were plastered with Michael Jordan and Chicago Bears football posters. Where were the female athletes I could look up to? It’s now 2014 and a lot has changed, there’s the WNBA, a women’s soccer league just started in 2014 and is doing well, women in the Olympics are more represented and win more medals then the men. But overall, there is still a lot that could be done and young girls playing and staying in sports is still an issue. I believe having more accessibility to female athletes and just knowing they are there would be a tremendous help in having young girls stay active in whatever sport they want. Female athletes are strong and awesome, I just want young girls to know they exist and are getting stronger and “awesome-er” everyday.

GIRLS IN THE GAME GRADUATE THESIS

IT’S NOT REALLY ABOUT PEOPLE NOT LIKING WOMEN’S SPORTS, AS IT’S MORE ABOUT PEOPLE JUST NOT BEING USED TO WOMEN’S SPORTS. THE PROBLEM Some of you may wonder why you should care about gender inequality in sports. What makes it so important? To break it down simply, it is an important issue in today’s society. It affects a lot of women, and you probably know at least one woman that may be affected by gender equality in some way. But not only women face this issue in sports, so do young girls, a lot of the time indirectly or they just have no say in the situation. For example, I grew up playing soccer and went on to be a starter at my high school. But I, along with all my fellow teammates never received any college scholarship offers even though we went to the playoffs and were top seeded every year. Not only were we limited in recruiters seeing us due to the fact that we lived in Hawaii, but we were overlooked because a lot of women’s soccer teams just didn’t have the budget and had to be very particular in who they chose. We were even told by some recruiters, “if I had more scholarships to give out, I would definitely be giving one to you.” It just felt like the odds were stacked against us. And, it just leaves you feeling angry and like you worked hard for nothing. This is a problem most girls realize at a much younger age and then end up quitting sports completely for various reasons. Young girls deserve to have every opportunity any boy gets. They shouldn’t be deprived of the same opportunities. The road is a lot more difficult for them then it is for boys and I can’t solve everything, but I can make a dent and hopefully provide girls with the inspiration they need to stay in sports.

GIRLS IN THE GAME GRADUATE THESIS

TITLE IX IS A PORTION OF THE EDUCATION AMENDMENTS OF 1972 U.S. LEGISLATION

SOME HISTORY No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving federal financial assistance... Although the Civil Rights Act of 1964 was written in order to end discrimination based on religion, race, color, or national origin, the act also energized the women’s rights movement, which had somewhat slowed after women’s suffrage in 1920. While Title IX is best known for its impact on high school and collegiate athletics, the original statute made no explicit mention of sports. Concern over how Title IX would affect men’s athletics prompted some to look for ways to limit the influence of Title IX, and Senator Birch Bayh of Indiana spent the next three years keeping watch over the Department of Health, Education and Welfare (HEW) to get regulations formulated that carried out its legislative intent of eliminating discrimination in higher education on the basis of sex. When they were issued in summer 1975 they were contested, and hearings were held by the House Subcommittee on Equal Opportunities on the discrepancies between the regulations and the law. Implementation by colleges and universities also had to be monitored, although many were working to comply. Overall, men’s athletic opportunities since Title IX’s passage have increased. Title IX has been wrongly blamed by its critics for cuts to some men’s sports teams at some educational institutions.

Women continue to be significantly underrepresented among high school and college athletes.

It is the wealthiest athletic programs in NCAA Division I-A that are dropping men’s minor sports, typically because they are shifting these monies to compete in football and men’s basketball.

The gap between men’s and women’s sports participation and support is not closing.

LESS PAY, LESS OPPORTUNITIES Another issue is money. College and professional sports continue to provide unequal funding for women. Paying men more for the same sport gives women in the sport less incentive to push themselves and discourages future female participation in the sport.

GIRLS IN THE GAME GRADUATE THESIS

BY THE AGE OF 12, GIRLS ARE SIX TIMES MORE LIKELY TO DROP OUT OF SPORTS THAN BOYS.

WHAT DOES ALL THIS HAVE TO DO WITH YOUNG GIRLS? People still cling to the notion that girls are simply not as interested in sports as boys. Girls simply do not receive as much positive reinforcement about their sports participation as boys. These statements and many more prove that people still think wrongly about girls and sports and that there is still change to be made. The history of gender inequality in sports is a long one, but what does all of this have to do with my thesis? I know I can’t solve everything about gender inequality in sports, but I can definitely narrow it down to something I feel strongly about and start with that. And that would be young girls (ages 8-12). They are at the age where they are the most impressionable. They need direction and they need it from adults who they can relate to. In this case they need female athlete role models to show them that sports are good and have a number of benefits even if they don’t have goals to make it a career. They can play sports for a variety of reasons, whether it be just for fun, to make friends or maybe they want to play in college, go to the Olympics or play professionally. Whatever it is, I want them to stay in sports and not give up. When it comes to sports, sometimes girls need that extra push and motivation because the odds can be stacked against them a lot more than the boys. And I just want to provide them with that. So the goal of my thesis is, I want to empower young girls to pursue athletics through stories of successful female athlete role models.

GIRLS IN THE GAME GRADUATE THESIS

WHY ARE SPORTS SO BENEFICIAL? Sport has been one of the most important sociocultural learning experiences for boys and men for many years. Those same benefits should be afforded for girls and women also. It is important for all of us to know that:

GIRLS WHO PLAY SPORTS DO BETTER IN SCHOOL You might think that athletics will take up all your study time. But research shows that girls who play sports do better in school than those who don’t. Exercise improves learning, memory, and concentration, which can give active girls an advantage in the classroom.

GIRLS WHO PLAY SPORTS LEARN TEAMWORK AND GOAL-SETTING SKILLS Sports teaches valuable life skills. When you’re working with coaches, trainers, and teammates to win games and achieve goals, you’re learning how to be successful. Those skills will serve you well at work and in family life.

CHAPTER 01 02 03 04

GIRLS IN THE GAME GRADUATE THESIS

SPORTS ARE GOOD FOR A GIRL’S HEALTH In addition to being fit and maintaining a healthy weight, girls who play sports are also less likely to smoke. And later in life, girls who exercise are less likely to get breast cancer or osteoporosis.

PLAYING SPORTS BOOSTS SELF-CONFIDENCE Girls who play sports feel better about themselves. Why? It builds confidence when you know you can practice, improve, and achieve your goals. Sports are also a feel-good activity because they help girls get in shape, maintain a healthy weight, and make new friends.

EXERCISE CUTS THE PRESSURE Playing sports can lessen stress and help you feel a little happier. How? The brain chemicals released during exercise improve a person’s mood. Friends are another mood-lifter. And being on a team creates tight bonds between friends. It’s good to know your teammates will support you — both on and off the field!

GIRLS IN THE GAME GRADUATE THESIS

I WANT TO EMPOWER YOUNG GIRLS TO PURSUE ATHLETICS THROUGH THE STORIES OF SUCCESSFUL FEMALE ATHLETE ROLE MODELS. HOW DO I SOLVE THIS PROBLEM FOR MY THESIS? I knew I wanted to give young girls female athlete role models to look up to, but how exactly could I do this with design? I wanted it to be something that is easily accessible and fun. So, I figured why not a magazine and a website? These are two things that would be easily updated every few months and could change with every issue, thus giving the girls the most up to date women’s sports information they could get, but keeping it fun and appropriate for their age. This is ideal because it could really give these girls athletes from all types of sports and really broaden their horizons. Both a magazine and a website are easily accessible and if the kids are lucky enough to have a tablet the magazine is still something that could be ideally subscribed to and read on a tablet such as an iPad if they choose. Once I discovered what my main deliverables would be I had to get going and do my research. Designing for 8-12 year old athletic girls is harder than you think, but I loved the challenge, since it was something I could relate so closely to. So, this chapter will explore some of my methods of research and how I went about collecting things to design my deliverables. In earlier stages I had a chat with various people about female athletes and what they felt about them, I volunteered for a program called BAWSI (Bay Area Women’s Sports Initiative), I had a photo shoot with an awesome group of young girls and a lot more. So, let’s take a brief look at how I collected my information to get to my finished product.

DISCUSSION TIME In the very early stages of my thesis before I even pinpointed my target audience I had a discussion group with family, friends, co workers, etc. to start to get some ideas of what people thought of women in sports. The responses I received from some of my participants were quite interesting. I had a survey that I sent out to them and to people who couldn’t make the discussion. I also had a couple games to play and of course I enticed them with free pizza and soda. I also made sure to include both male and female participants and people who both love sports and could care less about sports. I wanted to start a discussion and get other viewpoints about women in sports that maybe I would be missing since I am such a huge advocate for women’s sports. The next couple pages will show you responses from four of these people just so you can get an idea of what I asked them and the responses they gave. In the end I was really able to pinpoint some interesting ideas that I haven’t thought of and it eventually helped and led me to narrow down my target audience to girls ages 8-12. So, in the end this discussion proved to be very helpful.

LYNETTE SIALANA 29 years old Office Manager Played soccer and watches various sports during their seasons

Lynette grew up as an athlete and believes women should be given more opportunities then what they currently have. She would love to be able to go to women’s pro soccer games if they were available.

“I WOULD LOVE TO ATTEND PROFESSIONAL WOMEN’S SPORTING EVENTS IF THEY WERE AROUND. IT’S NICE TO BE AROUND FELLOW WOMEN ATHLETES AND EVEN GET DIFFERENT IDEAS ON TRAINING AND DIETS. YOU FEEL A KIND OF BOND AND PRIDE AROUND.“ Do you believe men are better at sports than women? No, I don’t believe men are better at sports than women. There’s a lot of things that us women can and have played that men play but I believe its just the lack of strength that women have compared to men. What do you think the reasons are for lack of women’s professional teams? (except in basketball where they have the WNBA) I think that it could be because women have children so it temporarily takes time away from sports. I think it could do with the lack of interest in women sports because I’m sure there are a lot of people are still stuck on “boys are better than girls” non-sense.

DANIEL TUTTEL 31 years old Screenwriter Played baseball growing up and a huge Dallas Mavericks fan

Daniel enjoys sports and would like to see female athletes given more opportunities, but believes women in sports has been looked at negatively for so long there are not enough women to fill enough teams to make a league in some sports.

“I THINK THERE IS A LACK OF WOMEN PROFESSIONAL SPORTS BECAUSE THE IDEA OF GIRLS BEING IN SPORTS HAS BEEN SO NEGATIVELY LOOKED AT THAT THERE ARE NOT ENOUGH WOMEN TO FILL ENOUGH TEAMS TO MAKE A LEAGUE IN SOME SPORTS. SO, I DON’T THINK I WILL BE WATCHING ANY WOMEN’S PRO SPORTS ANYTIME SOON, UNFORTUNATELY.“ Do you believe men are better at sports than women? No, Woman are great at sports, but I do believe it depends on the sport and who they are facing. But better is such a general statement I have to disagree. “Female bodies are by nature unsuitable for physical performance?” Do you agree with this statement? Why or why not? Not at all, they are probably more suited for certain physical performances. They can run just as fast, hit as hard, and catch just as well as men.

Landon is your typical mans man, he loves sports. Any game on TV and he’s watching it. He stated he doesn’t believe women have the confidence to succeed in the professional world of sports, but if it happens he would be more than willing to attend their games.

“I THINK MEN ARE JUST BETTER THAN WOMEN AT SPORTS. IT’S JUST THE CALIBER AND MUSCLE TONE THAT MEN HAVE OPPOSED TO WOMEN THAT GIVE THEM THE EDGE, NOT THAT WOMEN CAN’T DO IT, BUT MEN CAN DO IT BETTER.” Do you believe men are better at sports than women? Yes, its just the caliber and muscle tone that men have opposed to women that give them the edge. Not that women cant do it, but men can do it better. Do you believe women should have professional teams also? Why or why not? Yes, it is cool to watch women play professional sports What do you think the reasons are for lack of women’s professional teams? (except in basketball where they have the WNBA) Not enough confidence in women

KORY ANN TOYAMA 31 years old School Counselor Played soccer, softball and tennis and is a big Texas Rangers fan

Kory has always had interest in sports, whether she was playing or watching. She believes men are overall better at sports than women, but still thinks women should be given the opportunity to have professional teams and given the chance to prove themselves.

“I DON’T THINK I WOULD ATTEND PROFESSIONAL WOMEN’S GAMES IF THEY WERE AVAILABLE. THEY’RE JUST NOT AS EXCITING AS MENS SPORTS, WHICH ARE MORE PHYSICAL AND EXCITING.” Do you believe men are better at sports than women? Yes, I believe men are better at sports than women. I feel that men are better than women because they are more physically fit and they can endure more pain than women. They are more aggressive and are not afraid of hurting others, so they play harder. What do you think the reasons are for lack of women’s professional teams? (except in basketball where they have the WNBA) Marketability. Professional teams have to pay for themselves in order for them to be professional. I don’t know about you, but I don’t know anyone who watches the WNBA. I know many people who watch NBA.

BAWSI’S FOUNDING INITIATIVES ARE THE PILLARS OF THE ORGANIZATION AND INSPIRING OPPORTUNITIES FOR BOTH ATHLETE VOLUNTEERS AND KIDS. VOLUNTEERING FOR BAWSI I spent some time volunteering for BAWSI (Bay Area Women’s Sports Initiative) and learned a lot about young girls and sports. It was a perfect opportunity to talk to the girls and play various activities with them and just see how much fun they have and how they really look up to and enjoy having the volunteers there.

WHAT IS BAWSI? BAWSI understands that service can be reciprocally transformative, positively impacting those doing the serving as well as those being served. As athletes choose to matter, they become more aware of their capacity to bring a bit of goodness into the world. BAWSI Girls BAWSI Girls focuses on health, hope and wholeness, and is a unique way in which female athletes can directly impact young lives. It is a free, weekly after-school program in which elementary school girls develop self-esteem and good health practices from role models they can admire and emulate – female athletes drawn from college, university, and high school teams all over the Bay Area. BAWSI Rollers BAWSI Rollers brings female athletes into the lives of elementary school children with physical or cognitive disabilities, ensuring that those kids have the same access to fitness and fun. BAWSI Rollers is a sports program that develops hand-eye coordination, strength, and confidence.

PHOTO SHOOT WITH THE GIRLS To get some of my own shots and to meet some girls, I put together a photo shoot. One of my soccer teammates has a daughter and was able to get some of her daughters friends to help me out. Their names are Kyra, Sinead, Macye, Lorelei and Greta and they range in age from 8-10, all within my target audience. I asked them to come in the gear of the sports they play. And they sure did, they had a blast and I also got to know them a little better and ask them some questions about their respective sports, how they like them, who their favorite athletes are, etc. It was interesting to talk to them and learn what they think about sports.

SOCIAL MEDIA IS A PLATFORM TO BUILD A UNIQUE FAN BASE WHILE EXPRESSING YOUR BRAND EXACTLY HOW YOU SEE YOUR BRAND. SOCIAL MEDIA IS IMPORTANT Social media is a very important tool to use to market various things to the world. For this project, I knew I wouldn’t necessarily get a bunch of 8-12 year old girls to follow me, but I thought it would be smart to still have the Facebook and Twitter page just to get the Girls in the Game name out there to see if people would actually follow me and what could come out of it. I quickly learned a thesis project can be a tricky thing to market. It’s not something that is necessarily live and active and isn’t an actual company. BUT, it’s a very live idea that you have in your head. And getting people to follow that can be a little bit hard in the social media world. Although, I was able to employ some Twitter “tricks” to get some followers and to even get some professional athletes to favorite or retweet my tweets, which is always exciting. On Mondays I would do a featured athlete tweet. I would usually find a video of the athlete performing in a game, etc and post that. And if I could relate it to something going on at the time, even better. On Thursdays I would tweet a #tbt (Throwback Thursday). I would find a video of a female athlete from years ago that may not even be active anymore and retweet their highlights, etc. And when I would post these tweets I would always make sure the athlete had a Twitter account that I followed so I could tag them in the post, in hopes that they see it and possibly retweet or favorite it.

WHAT’S MY PROCESS? My process may not be the same for every project, but I try to keep it somewhat consistent in some ways. The only difference with this project was the length of time I had to work on it. How often do you get to work on the same project for a year and a half? Never. So having this much time was good, but could also cause some problems along the way. The good being I could really get a lot of research done and get as much information as I could to really be informed about my topic. As our instructors would say, we need to be the experts. I was able to work with a variety of instructors, which gave me different perspectives and fresh eyes on what I have designed. The bad was we had a lot of time to do research, which led to the ocassional OVER researching. Sometimes you can research so much you don’t know when to stop and when to start actually designing. Also, every new instructor you get also means you have to re-explain your project and get them behind your project. Overall the amount of time and research did make things feel overwhelming at times, but I was able to slowly but surely narrow things down by picking a specific audience, choosing my deliverables and taking it from there.

PAGE 47

GIRLS IN THE GAME GRADUATE THESIS

YOU CAN’T SOLVE WORLD HUNGER, YOU NEED TO NARROW DOWN YOUR AUDIENCE TO MAKE YOUR DESIGN GOALS ATTAINABLE. TARGET AUDIENCE In the beginning stages of my thesis I had no idea how I wanted to narrow down this topic. I wasn’t sure if I wanted to focus on female athletes and how they are being unfairly represented in the sports world. If I should focus on pay or how there’s not enough professional sports options for women. It was a struggle for me in the beginning. Then I remembered something. What was my personal tie to this topic? Why was I even considering women and sports as a topic in the first place? It was because as a child I remember not having any athletes to look up to. As a child.... So there it was, my target audience should be girls. Why did I choose the ages 8–12? I chose that age range because by the age of 12, girls are SIX times more likely to drop out of sports than boys. So, this meant I would have to get to them before they’re 12, but not too young when they don’t really understand what is going on. So once I figured out my target audience is girls, ages 8–12, from then on it was easier to make the decisions I needed to make. I quickly learned having the personal tie to your topic helps, it helps you make decisions easier because you lived through it so you remember what you didn’t have and why you wanted it.

GIRLS IN THE GAME Girls in the Game is what I refer to as the parent company. It’s the main identity of my thesis. It’s mission statement is to empower young girls to pursue athletics through stories of successful female athlete role models. So, the idea is Girls in the Game is my company, but I could possibly expand with items under this company and as you will see that is where the next identity for the magazine, Rising Up Taking Names came from. I wanted to keep Girls in the Game as it’s own identity because I felt like it was something that could expand into more. It could be a company that holds sporting events for girls, like basketball tournaments. It could partner with schools and take part in health education. It could be a number of things. My idea was that Girls in the Game is very expandable.

RISING UP TAKING NAMES Rising Up Taking Names is a magazine providing girls 8–12 with the inspiration and empowerment they need to continue to pursue sports as they get older. It is a subsidiary of Girls in the Game. Since it is a magazine, its main color palette is the red and black which will stay within the main portion of the magazine (i.e. Table of Contents, Kickoff, etc.). But for the feature itself that color palette will change each issue because each feature will be different. For this premiere issue it is called the Sheroes Issue and has its own color palette of pink, blue, yellow and black. Tungsten will always be the main typeface for the headers, etc. in the main parts of the magazine (i.e. Table of Contents, etc.), EXCEPT for the feature portion, which will change depending on the theme for that issue. Adobe Caslon Pro, will always be the typeface for the main body copy in all of the magazine, no matter what issue.

When we met I was taking a break from school and I told you I would have to finish and that it would take a lot of time away from “us”. But, you have been a trooper and have understood from day one. You remind me to eat, tell me when I need to take breaks so I don’t go insane, dried my tears when I cried from frustration and never once have you left my side and I will always be appreciative. You are THE best boyfriend a girl could ask for.

TEACHERS

TRACIE

I have been at AAU since 2008. I took time off here and there, but I have had a lot of teachers that have influenced me. So thank you all, especially Dave Gottwald, Jeremy Scott, Phil Hamlett and Stan Zienka. You had the most influence with either my thesis or just pushing me in my work in general and making me realize my potential.

You have been there for me, listened to me cry and complain and gone through thousands of text messages with me. I will be forever grateful to you for always being by my side and I wish you were in SF to celebrate with me.
