Welcome Welcome to the fourth edition of the Derbyshire Institute of Sport magazine.

As you will see from this latest issue, the work of the DIS is going from strength to strength, with supported athletes continuing to achieve some fantastic results.

Athletes are also making the most of the opportunities available to them from DIS, such as workshops on topics including nutrition and psychology, training camps, high quality strength and conditioning, and sports science and sports medicine services.

My thanks go to each of the funding partners – Derby City Council, Derbyshire County Council and the University of Derby – for their continued support, which is making a difference in so many ways.

Sports Awards DIS athletes and coaches among finalists for 2013 Derbyshire Sports Awards DIS athletes Abbie Wood, Grace King, Lewis White and Yasmin Miller, and DIS coaches James Boxall and Andi Manley are among the finalists for the 2013 Derbyshire Sports Awards, sponsored by the University of Derby.

Swimmer Abbie and badminton player Grace are the two finalists in the Derby City Council Junior Sportswoman of the Year category, while swimmer Lewis is one of two finalists in the Origination Junior Disabled Sportsperson of the Year category and Yasmin is a finalist for the title of University of Derby Sportsperson of the Year. DIS Swimming Performance Coach Andi Manley and DIS Badminton Performance Coach James Boxall are the two contenders for the Matrix Fitness Performance Coach of the Year award.

The winners will be announced during an invite-only ceremony at The Roundhouse in Derby on Thursday, November 14, where the guest speaker will be Olympic silver medallist and top BBC sports pundit Colin Jackson CBE who is an ambassador for Matrix Fitness.

In the district level Awards, a number of athletes supported by the DIS have been recognised for their achievements of the past year:

DIS athletes among winners at DSSA Sports Awards DIS athletes Yasmin Miller, Abbie Wood, Adam Morewood, Lewis White, Alicia Barrett and Grace King were among those to be recognised at the 2013 DSSA Sports Awards.

Hurdler Yasmin was named Sportsperson of the Year at the event, while swimmer Abbie and bike trials competitor Adam were named joint winners in the Individual Achievement – Non-School Sport category.

Swimmer Lewis White was highly commended in the Disabled Sportsperson of the Year category, badminton player Grace King was highly commended in the Sportsperson of the Year category, and Alicia was a member of the Derbyshire Junior Girls Athletics Team which was highly commended in the Secondary School Team of the Year category.

Abbie, Adam and Grace were also each presented with a John Bainbridge Award Grant of £50. Grants are awarded annually in memory of John Bainbridge, former head of sport and recreation at Wilsthorpe Community School, who died of a heart attack in 2004 aged 51.

School Games DIS athletes among competitors at Sainsbury's 2013 UK School Games A number of DIS athletes were among those who competed at the Sainsbury's 2013 UK School Games in Sheffield.

The multi-sport event, for elite young athletes of school age, included competitions in 12 current and future Olympic and Paralympic sports: fencing, rugby sevens, gymnastics, hockey, badminton, athletics, cycling, judo, swimming, table tennis, volleyball and wheelchair basketball, with around 1,600 young people competing.

Alicia Barrett was part of the Midlands athletics team. Alicia won two gold medals and set a new School Games record in the girls' 80m hurdles with a time of 11.18 seconds.

Alicia said the whole event had been a fantastic experience.

She said: “I got a real sense of what it would be like to be a professional athlete, the good, the bad and the ugly, and the importance of balancing study with training.

“I'll be working hard this year to secure my qualification and defend my title next year.”

Also bringing back a medal to Derbyshire was swimmer Lewis White. Lewis swam in three events and, despite being one of the youngest competitors, managed to win a bronze medal in the 100m breaststroke in a new personal best time of 1:29.14.

Lewis said: “It was quite a tight race. It was me and few others battling for the bronze and I am just so happy that I came through with the medal in the end.

“I'd definitely like to take the next step and go to the Paralympics now and getting a taste of what it is like here has been fantastic.”

Meanwhile competing in her fourth School Games was table tennis player Isobel Ashley (right). Isobel was part of a young England Midlands team which reached the bronze medal play off match against Ireland but missed out on a medal 4-2.

DIS athletes Charlotte Henry (table tennis) and Joshua Haynes (sailing) were also selected to take part in the Talent Inspiration Programme at the Games. Joshua said: “TIP was great. We did lots of things including attending and enjoying the opening ceremony, watching and observing some of the sports at the games, learning and being inspired in workshop sessions with ex Olympic and Paralympic athletes and meeting and bonding with other athletes. All-in-all I feel that going to TIP was a great opportunity for me and it has benefited me hugely.”

Performance Coach – James Maudsley

New players join Derby Trailblazers and UoD basketball team The unique partnership between the DIS, the University of Derby and the Derby Trailblazers has resulted in four new signings for the club. 6'7” American forward Alex Dorr, 6'6” forward Dan Watts, 6'4” wing player Alex Denholm and 6'0” former England international junior guard Lamar Morrison will all combine playing for the Trailblazers with programmes of study at the University of Derby, as well as representing the UoD basketball team in the Universities basketball league.

The possibility of signing Dorr came via a conversation between Trailblazers Academy Head Coach Matt Shaw and Dorr's coach over in America. Shaw - a graduate of the University of Mary, passed a glowing reference on to the Trailblazers Head Coach James Maudsley, who moved quickly to tie up the signing.

Joining Dorr on a DIS scholarship is Nottingham-born Dan Watts, who has been one of the top players in EBL Men's division two over the last few seasons.

DIS basketball Performance Coach and Head Coach for the Derby Trailblazers James Maudsley, said: “The signing of Alex and Dan would not have been possible without the link we have with the Derbyshire Institute of Sport and the University of Derby so I'm very grateful for that. “My assistant coach Steve Baxter and our Academy coach Matt Shaw had been tracking the progress of Alex Dorr for the last three seasons and we were delighted when a player of his calibre agreed to join our programme. Alex carries a real offensive threat and someone who we believe can anchor our defence.

“As for Dan, he's a player I've admired for a number of years. I think he will really benefit from the work he's going to be doing with strength and conditioning expert Nick Ward and he's already seeing some progress in that area.”

While Dorr and Watts will be part of the Scholarship programme, new signings Alex Denholm and Lamar Morrison will also receive bursaries to help with their studies.

The DIS will also support a number of players in the junior programme who are on the fringes of the International age group teams (U16, U17, U18).

Recruitment at the University of Derby has also gone well with three former age group internationals joining the two scholars in the UoD basketball team. The team has also attracted four further players with National League experience which will improve the programme again.

Competitive fixtures for the Trailblazers began on September 21 with victory in their first home season match over Loughborough Student Riders, with DIS athlete Alex Dorr scoring 22 points.

Swimming

Performance Coach – Andi Manley

(More P5) Molly Renshaw took fourth place at the World Junior Championships, missing bronze in the 200m Breaststroke by 0.01 and silver by 0.06.

Her time was 2:27.52, a new British Age Record for 17 years.

Derventio eXcel swimmers won a total of 16 medals at the National Championships, a record tally for the club at age group level.

DIS team triumphant in charity tournament A DIS team came away with the best gross score of the day at the 16th Annual Mick Grundy Memorial competition at Ashbourne Golf Club.

DIS Golf Performance Coach Steve Astle was joined by DIS athletes Nick Newbold, Craig Young and Mark Porter for the tournament, and their gross score of 127 was 15 under par and six clear of their nearest rivals.

In total 23 teams of four people took part in the tournament, which raised money for the Anthony Nolan Trust. Ÿ Ÿ Ÿ

Craig Young finished fifth in the Midland Youths Championships Mark Porter made it to the final stages of Open Qualifying James Whatley made it to the final stages of Open Qualifying and also finished 3rd in the Midland Masters

Adam Morewood competes in BIU World Championship After being crowned European Cup Champion earlier in the year, bike trials competitor Adam Morewood competed in the BIU World Championship, taking third place in rounds in Spain and Czech Republic to secure third place overall in the 10-12 age group. Adam also competed in Switzerland in the UCI World Youth Games, taking fifth place in the finals of the 11-12 year old category after qualifying second.

Adam was a joint winner in the Individual Achievement – Non-School Sport category at the 2013 Derbyshire Schools' Sports Association Sports Awards, alongside swimmer Abbie Wood. (More P4)

Sarah Lomas competes at European Youth Mountain Bike Championships Sarah Lomas competed at the European Youth Mountain Bike Championships in Austria, finishing in 22nd place in the Team Time Trial and 21st place overall in the individual competition. Sarah attended the competition after receiving a grant from DIS to help meet competition costs. She then returned to win the last round of the British Mountain bike series at the Olympic course in Hadleigh, Essex.

James Shaw won a silver medal in the National Junior Male Madison in Manchester in September, riding with his partner Tristan Robbins from Cardiff. Ÿ Josh Scales competed at the National Youth Track Omnium final in Reading, finishing fourth overall in his age category. Ÿ Rosie and Hannah Blount competed at the Senior National Championships, taking fourth place in the team sprint. Ÿ

Athletics

David Hong reaches semi-finals of Danish Cup David Hong competed at the Danish Cup, reaching the semi-finals of the U13 boys’ doubles. David and his partner William Jones had knocked out the No.1 pair in Europe in an earlier round of the competition, which saw the best youngsters from all over Europe competing. The competition was David's second international appearance for England, having previously represented England U13 and won a bronze medal in the doubles at the Refrath Cup in Germany. He also reached the quarter final of the singles, losing to the top seed, as well as winning bronze in the boys' doubles in the first of this season's U15 GOLD circuit tournaments in Nottingham.

Grace King was chosen to travel to Germany with the England team for the first international event on the junior calendar. Grace also won bronze in the girls' doubles in the first of this season's U15 GOLD circuit tournaments, which was held in Nottingham Ÿ Tiara Samuel won silver in the girls' doubles in the first of this season's U17 GOLD circuit tournaments, which was held in Milton Keynes. Tiara Samuel also won gold in the doubles at the Derbyshire Senior Restricted Ÿ Sophie Brealey won bronze in the girls' doubles in the first of this season's U17 GOLD circuit tournaments, which was held in Milton Keynes. Table Tennis

Alicia Barrett set a British record on electrical timing with a 11.01/1.7 80m hurdles victory at the AAA's National Championships in Bedford.

In her heat she recorded an even faster 10.91, but was assisted by an illegal 3.2mps tailwind. Alicia also competed at the Schools International Athletics Competition in Dublin, winning her first international medal – a gold – in the women's 80m hurdles in a new championship best performance time of 10.99, keeping her at the top of the UK rankings.

Alicia competed at the Sainsbury's 2013 UK School Games in Sheffield and won two gold medals and set a new School Games record in the girls' 80m hurdles with a time of 11.18 seconds. (More P5) Jay Rarazda was selected to compete at the Welsh Athletics International Games, where he was part of the U20 North of England Team which finished in second place.

He also reached the finals of the 100m. Jay also competed at the Northern Championships in Manchester where he achieved a PB of 10.80 in the 100m and a PB of 21.93 in the 200m.

Isobel Ashley competed at the Sainsbury's 2013 UK School Games in Sheffield, her fourth School Games. Isobel was part of a young England Midlands team which reached the bronze medal play off match against Ireland but missed out on a medal 4-2. (More P5) Matthew Webster and Charlotte Henry attended the Summer ETTA camp at Lilleshall, with four players from each region selected on their potential to climb the ladder and earn an England cap or gain selection for England Youth Development.

Shooter Caroline Povey wins British Grand Prix Caroline Povey has won the British Grand Prix in Olympic Trap Clay Target Shooting.

33-year-old Caroline won the Ladies event after hitting 184 targets out of 200 during the two-day competition in Beverley, East Yorkshire. Caroline, from Matlock, said: “I am really pleased to have won the British Grand Prix. It is a very prestigious competition and the title of British Champion is obviously highly contested. I had been preparing well in the run up to the competition and had worked hard with my coach and father Joe Neville to ensure I was at my best.”

Mike Gilligan won the British Grand Prix in Olympic Skeet shooting and has also qualified to compete at the World Cup Final in Abu Dhabi

Jay Clarke and partner Marcus Walters won the U16 boys doubles at the National Tennis Championships

Caroline is a regular member of the Great Britain shooting team and has already represented her country in World Cups in Mexico, Cyprus and the UAE this year.

Caroline said: “The DIS is really unique and has provided me with sports psychology support, strength and conditioning training and mentoring from Performance Director Andy Wood. It has been a great support to me this year and has been instrumental in my performances.”

Caroline will now continue to train over the winter months with the aim of competing in next year's Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

Skier Ellie Koyander on course for second Winter Olympics Freestyle moguls skier Ellie Koyander has met the GBR Olympic qualification for the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, and now needs to ensure that she stays in the top 30 in the world rankings to meet the IOC criteria and ensure selection for her second Olympic Games.

Netball

Tamikah and Brittany have retained their places in the national U19 and U17 squads respectively.

The duo have also been selected for the Loughborough Lightning U19 national performance league squad.

Team Derby performance programme expands The Team Derby performance programme has expanded.

University of Derby to launch new sports degree The University of Derby has agreed a new partnership deal with Derby County Football Club which includes becoming the naming rights partner of the Rams' Moor Farm Training Ground, the provision of education to Academy staff and players, and the launch of a unique Sport Management degree.

The agreement will see Moor Farm renamed as the 'Derby County Training Centre in partnership with the University of Derby'. The University will also have a number of sponsorship elements at the Stadium, along with access to the training ground and coaching staff for its football team.

In addition to renaming the Training Ground, the University of Derby is also launching a new BA (Hons) Sport Management degree - the first of its kind in the UK - which will work in conjunction with Derby County Football Club to give students 'real world' experience in the business of football.

In addition to last year's three performance sports of badminton, basketball and table tennis, athletes from rugby union, American football, netball and women's basketball will be supported for 2013/14.

Twenty additional athletes from the new sports have been selected by their own club coaches to participate in the programme.

The support available to athletes involves a strength and conditioning programme led by DIS Lead Strength and Conditioning Coach Nick Ward, physiotherapy and workshops in nutrition and psychology.

www.teamderby.com Team Derby Performance Sports athletes take part in psychology workshop A group of Team Derby Performance Sports athletes took part in a psychology workshop titled 'Preparing to Compete'.

The session explored the importance of effective preparation in relation to performance. The interactive workshop looked at each athlete's current preparation for sport and a number of psychological techniques that could be used to enhance preparation and focus.

In addition to raising self-awareness regarding preparation, the workshop considered how these psychological techniques could be utilised during performance as a means of enhancing the ability to perform under pressure.

University of Derby teams have begun competing in BUCS competitions for 2013/14.

Its goal is to break in to the top 50 in the BUCS standings by 2015, having finished in 66th place for 2012/13.

The opening day of the new season was one of mixed fortunes for Team Derby.

The first fixtures of all BUCS leagues are extremely competitive however very nervy as new players are brought in and older players leave because of graduation.

Also earning maximum points as a result of a walk-over was the Women’s volleyball team who was set to play UC Birmingham.

The Men’s hockey 1st team thrashed University of Leicester 3rds 11-0 at Moorways Sport Centre while the Women’s 1st team ended up 3-0 winners against University of Lincoln’s 2nd team.

For Team Derby, there were many positives as pre-season cobwebs were cleaned away. The most positive results came from the badminton teams. S&C / Physiotherapy Boxing Champion Neville Brown delivers master class at DIS performance camp Five-times National Middleweight Boxing Champion Neville Brown delivered a boxing master class as part of the DIS performance camp on Sunday, September 22.

Neville led DIS athletes through a warm up routine before starting the master class which worked on the athletes' ďŹ tness and co-ordination. Neville also talked to the group about the importance of visualising competition or rivals during training to get the most out of their training.

The performance camp also saw DIS swimmers undergo a series of performance tests with Strength and Conditioning Coach Tim Lawrence to benchmark their explosive power. Repeating these tests throughout the season will allow Tim and Derventio eXcel Head Coach Andi Manley to monitor the strength gains of each of the athletes.

DIS and University of Derby hosts Level 1 S&C course The DIS and the University of Derby recently hosted a three-day Level 1 strength and conditioning course.

DIS Swimming Performance Coach Andi Manley was among those who successfully passed the course.

The course included topics such as the importance of a correct warm-up, and the sequencing of exercises in both warm ups and circuits.

Athletes then made use of the DIS gym under the watchful eyes of Strength and Conditioning coaches Nick Ward and Spencer Brown.

Physiotherapist Carl Butler was also on hand to administer physiotherapy support to any athletes who needed it.

The course also gave candidates the chance to meet and share ideas with coaches from other sports and backgrounds, and ďŹ nished with a discussion on continued professional development and how communities of practice are a useful tool.

News in Brief DIS athletes attend International Summer Academy DIS athletes Tiara Samuel, Josh Hong, David Hong and Sophie Brealey were among those who attended an International Summer Academy delivered by Andy Wood and Donna Kellogg.

The annual badminton event offers young aspiring athletes the opportunity to 'train like a professional' and sample a world class performance environment.

This year's camp was held from August 12 to 16, and also included visits by Olympians Nathan Robertson and Anthony Clark.

The aim is to attract top level aspiring badminton champions into the Derbyshire performance environment.

DIS hub site Brampton Manor hosts Championships DIS hub site Brampton Manor hosted the Derbyshire Junior County Closed Championships on September 28 and 29, with 44 squash players competing in nine age group competitions.

Among the winners was England junior international and recently turned professional Ashley Davies, who was victorious in the U19 Boys final.

The latest DIS performance camp was held on Saturday, October 26.

The day included an informal talk from 2006 Commonwealth Gold Medallist Ross Davenport, who spoke about the principals of athlete selfmanagement and his experiences as an elite swimmer.

DIS Basketball Performance Coach James Maudsley led athletes through a basketball skills sessions to develop team work and co-ordination, and DIS Strength and Conditioning Coach Nick Ward led a session on personalised warm up and cool down routines.

The camp also gave DIS athletes the chance to train around like-minded performance athletes and coaches from other DIS sports and to check and challenge training methods. The camp was held at the DIS gym at the University of Derby's Kedleston Road site.

DIS appoints Research and Information Officer Martin Hird has joined the DIS as Research and Information Officer.

Martin has held a similar role within Derbyshire Sport for the last three years and is now working for DIS two days a week, usually on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

Ashley faced Duffield-based James Blythe in the final, winning a tough match 11-9, 11-5, 11-9 to become county champion in his last year as a junior.

Ashley is a member of the England Squash England Academy.

Andy Wood is a former professional UK badminton player with over 30 years professional coaching experience. He was Performance Director at GB Badminton and was the Badminton Head Coach at the Sydney, Athens and Beijing Olympics. He coached Simon Archer and Joanne Goode to Britain's first Olympic badminton medal, a bronze in Sydney 2000, and Nathan Robertson and Gail Emms to their silver in Athens in 2004.

Andy also runs MatchPlaySport Coaching Consultancy.

Chloe Maudsley has worked for Derbyshire Sport for five years in a variety of roles including Senior Competition Manager and Youth Sport Officer, before being appointed Talent Pathways Manager. Her previous roles have included West Midlands Development Manager for British Triathlon.

Martin Hird has worked for Derbyshire Sport for the last three years as the Research and Information Officer whilst completing a part-time Sport Science Degree at the University of Derby. Martin is a keen rower having competed at the British National Championships and Henley Royal Regatta for Derby RC. Donna Kellogg Badminton player Donna competed at the Olympic Games in 2000, 2004 and 2008. During a medal-packed career spanning 12 years Donna won 88 caps for England and won a host of Commonwealth Games medals including gold in the ladies doubles, a team gold and mixed doubles bronze in 1998. She was also the European ladies doubles winner in 2000 and 2006, and mixed double winner in 2008 before retiring in 2009.

She was awarded an MBE in 2010.

Nick Ward has worked as a performance enhancement consultant to sports for over 15 years including success with Canada Bobsleigh Skeleton and the University of Durham.

A specialist in athletic / physical preparation, Nick is both accredited by and a tutor for the United Kingdom Strength and Conditioning Association (UKSCA). With four years as the National lead S&C coach with TASS, he has consulted for organisations such as the British Olympic Association and the English Institute of Sport.

Lynda Daley is a chartered physiotherapist and is currently the Operational Lead for Physiotherapy for

the English Institute of Sport (EIS) working in the East and West Midlands.

She has previously worked for England Hockey, GB Weightlifting and GB Wheelchair Tennis and supported a number of major multi-sport games, including the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games where she was Venue Medical Manager for the North Greenwich Arena (O2).

Spencer Brown spent ten years as a professional rugby player, where he was a member of the England Elite squad for three years, won two full England caps, 12 'A' caps and represented England in the World Sevens Series in Paris. After completing an internship at Northampton Saints RFC, he became the Strength & Conditioning Coach for Bedford Blues RFC. He now operates an injury rehabilitation clinic at Nuffield Health Hospital in Derby and is one of the Directors and Head of Strength & Conditioning at Peak Performance.

Tim Lawrenson specialises in working with swimming, and he has been working with elite swimmers in Derbyshire for three years. He also teaches Sport and Exercise Science including areas of Strength and Conditioning, Anatomy and Physiology and Nutrition at the University of Derby. Tim's sporting background is in Sprint Kayaking, where he has competed nationally and internationally.

Paul Joyce has previously worked with the Sheffield Eagles rugby league team as an assistant strength and conditioning coach. He is the lead S&C coach at the North Derbyshire DIS hub at Brampton Manor, working with athletes from a multitude of sports. Paul is also a personal trainer.

Rachel Royer is the Clinical Director of Impact Physio. Rachel's involvement in sport started with the England Junior Women Volleyball squad (1993 -1994) and Nottingham Rugby Football Club (1996 - 2000). Following a career break for family, she returned as a physiotherapist with BUCS in 2011.

Rachel was a volunteer Physiotherapist at London 2012, based at Eton Dorney and The Rowing & Canoeing Village.

Carl Butler is Clinical Director and Head Physiotherapist at Active Total Health.

Carl has worked for Cambridge Utd and Cambridge City and Derby County Football Club, and in 2009 joined the English Institute of Sport as Physiotherapist for British Swimming. He has been Team England Physiotherapist for Swimming at the 2010 Commonwealth Games and for British Swimming at the 2010 European and 2011 World Championships and 2012 Olympic Games.

David Sprot qualified as a physiotherapist in 2006 and since then has worked in sport and in the NHS. He now works with British Orienteering and with a running-based clinic in Sheffield, and was a volunteer physio at the athletics track at the 2012 Olympic Games.

Keith Bullock is a Level 3 sprint and horizontal jumps coach who has been involved in athletics for more than half a century. He was a successful athlete, competing at the English Schools Championships and gained representative honours with the North of England and the AAA, before moving into coaching and club management. Keith is currently Chairman of Derby AC. James Boxall Former England international James is one of the England Junior Coaches and is also Head Coach of the Derbyshire Badminton Performance Centre, a Derbyshire Junior County Coach and National Talent Coach. He is a Derbyshire Senior 1st team player and Derbyshire Mens Doubles Champion.

James Maudsley is a lecturer in sport science at Loughborough College and is Basketball Academy Director. He is Head Coach of the Derby Trailblazers and led the team to win the EBL Men's National Trophy in 2012. He has worked with the GB Wheelchair Basketball team and coaches the University of Derby Men's Basketball Team.

Geoff Cooke rode for Great Britain at the 1972 Olympic Games, and won Commonwealth gold in the tandem sprint in Christchurch, New Zealand in 1974. He has also won 40 National, eight European and 22 World Championships as a master.

His coaching roles have included National Youth Sprint Coach from 2004 to 2009.

Steve Astle is England U16 Girls Coach for the North West and Head of Instruction at EMGA at Morley Hayes. He also works in coach education for the PGA and is Lead Coach for the Derby College Performance Golf Academy. He has worldwide coaching experience of all levels up to tour standard and works with many elite players across the UK. Rosie Port started her coaching career as Derbyshire County Coach and progressed to East Midlands Regional Coach. Throughout her career Rosie has led a series of England Netball Talent Camps and has gained international experience as Scotland U17 National Coach. More recently Rosie has been Lead Coach for Loughborough Lightning.

Andi Manley is Head Coach of Derventio eXcel. Seven swimmers have been selected to represent Great Britain since 2010 and have broken 17 Records at Age-Group and Senior level. Andi has been part of the GB coaching team at two European Junior Championships and one European Short Course Championship.
