As a result, the Scheduling Department is now requesting bids for time off for the following holidays: 

Thanksgiving Day



Christmas Eve



Christmas Day

Eligibility Criteria: 

Must be employed by the Agency for a minimum of one calendar year by the close date of July 25th



Must have received no Level 1 or higher disciplinary actions within the previous year



Cannot be in a third party status assigned to FTO for remediation



Employees may receive only two consecutive years of the same holiday off through the bid process

https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/MK3FLLY The bid will close promptly at 1:00 pm Wednesday, July 25th. Results will be posted on Thursday, July 26th. New Year’s Eve Note: To be consistent with the last two years, there will be no benefit time approvals for shifts that have a 10-42 time of 2200 or later due to the significant increase in call demand for the night time hours. State Required ID for ePCR Users

Community CPR Class Available Medic is now pleased to offer

Due to state reporting requirements, a change is needed to the way Medic logs Non-System Users into Siren.

Community CPR classes open to anyone in the community who wishes to become CPR certified. Our first class is Saturday, July 28th

Please continue to add Non-System Users, now adding P999998 in the ID Number field for all reports that have a Non-System User added to the call. In addition, each crew member must have their position/crew member role chosen as Primary, Secondary or Third crew in EVERY report,

beginning at 8:00 a.m. at Post 100. This class is a six-hour CPR/ AED AHA Heartsaver certification class.

Unspecified is not acceptable and will show up as a common data error. First responders are to be logged in as Third crew members, unless there are already three members of the Medic crew.

The certification is valid for two years and the cost for the course is $20. Registration is limited and can be found at

Thank you for your attention to this matter as this is a requirement set by the state. For questions about the state required P999998 ID Number, please contact ePCR Coordinator, Ute Dorflinger at ext. 6158 or via e-mail at

http://www.medic911.com/cpr_registration. If you have questions about the July 28th Community CPR Class, please contact Community Engagement Coordinator Katie Rutland at ext. 6021 or via e-mail at

Employee Highlight Dr. Jon Studnek, former Director of Pre-hospital Medicine, has made the transition to fulltime Medic employee and will now serve as the Agency’s Quality Improvement Manager. In his new role as Quality Improvement Manager, Dr. Studnek will lead a team of six to measure how we perform on key factors related specifically to patient care and system issues. He and his team will also continue to identify ways in which the Agency can improve upon and operate more efficiently. Aside from evaluating and improving upon patient care processes, the Alaska native enjoys running, cycling and camping with his wife and three daughters. Think Fast Questions 1. Favorite sports team The Boston Red Sox. It’s the first professional team I ever saw play live. 2. Favorite book “A Farewell to Arms” by Ernest Hemingway 3. The Road Runner or Coyote? Road Runner. I don’t want to be the one that falls off the cliff all the time! 4. What on your MP3 player right now? Of Monsters & Men 3

Dr. Studnek has joined Medic full-time and will now serve as the Agency’s Quality Improvement Manager.

Medic’s National Research Presence Medic presented three research papers before some of the nation’s top medical and research officials during the May 2012 Society for Academic Emergency Medicine national conference in Chicago. The topics presented included therapeutic hypothermia; patient satisfaction as related to pain management; and decreasing pre-shock pause intervals during defibrillation after an educational intervention presented by our very own Education & Quality Specialist, Steve Vandeventer. Medic Dispatch recently sat down with Quality Improvement Manager, Dr. Jon Studnek to learn more about the national conference and what it means to Medic. Education & Quality Specialist, Steve Vandeventer helps Medic build its national research presence with a presentation that details decreasing pre-shock pause intervals during defibrillation after an education intervention.

What are some of the advantages of attending a conference such as the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine?

Through this conference, Medic has the ability to engage with other speakers who have similar interests and topics. It puts the Agency in a position to examine more closely what we’re doing and how we’re doing when compared with other EMS Agencies from across the country. As a result, Medic becomes immersed into the research community which then helps us to validate our ideas; research concepts and brainstorm on the types of research and outcomes we hope to achieve in the future. What does the Agency gain from presenting at national conferences? By getting out in front of these national audiences, we engage people to think about Medic when it comes to EMS research. It also allows Medic to open up networking channels with other researchers from across the country that weren’t previously there before. How does research relate to the Agency’s core values especially when it comes to patient care? In order for a protocol change or a change in practice to take place, there must be evidence-based medicine. Our continued focus on research helps assure that the patient care we deliver is based on solid-evidence based medicine. Describe Medic’s future role or plans to present additional research. We aim to present our research at two national conferences each year. One being the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine, the other being the National Association of EMS Physicians held in January. What would you like employees to know about Medic’s research abstracts? We want Medic employees to know that we could not perform the research necessary to produce these papers without you! Each member of the field, administration and support staff plays an important role when carrying out the protocols, collecting data, and making it possible for us to present before the medical community on a national stage. Who should employees contact for more information on Medic’s research practices or research topics? Please contact Education & Quality Specialist, Steve Vandeventer or Quality Improvement Manager, Jon Studnek for any questions or ideas about Medic’s research practices. 4
