Eight miles to the west lies the Swan Lake Wildlife area, one of the finest natural wildlife preserves in the nation. St. Peter is adjacent to Le Sueur County, where several nearby lakes offer fishing, camping, boating and hunting as well as other year-round recreational activities. The Minnesota River Valley also contains abundant deposits of silica and Kasota Stone used in commercial facades nationwide, as well as at Target Field, home of the Minnesota Twins. The city of St. Peter, incorporated in 1873, is governed by a mayor and council. Elections are nonpartisan. The city’s day-to-day operations are managed by an appointed administrator who oversees city staff. The city also has an Economic Development Authority, Planning and Zoning Commission, Housing and Redevelopment Authority and a Hospital Commission. An expansion planned at River’s Edge Hospital in St. Peter is expected to begin in 2018. Find information on St. Peter online at saintpetermn.gov or on Facebook at City of Saint Peter, Minnesota. education which formally moved its campus to St. Peter in 1876, employs 183 full-time and over 60 part-time faculty members.

Gustavus Adolphus College

Gustavus Adolphus College, founded in 1862, plays a key educational and employment role in the St. Peter and Minnesota River Valley region. The college, on the western bluffs of St. Peter, has rebounded and rebuilt in spectacular fashion since the 1998 tornado which hit the St. Peter community. 2017 was a big year for the four-year, liberal arts college under the leadership of President Rebecca Bergman and the Board of Trustees. Over the last six months of the year, more than $75 million was raised in donations, including $50 million for the Nobel Hall project. It’s part of the college’s 10-year strategic plan, Gustavus ACTS. Gustavus is affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America and has an enrollment of about 2,200. Gustavus,

Students can earn bachelors of arts degrees in 72 majors in 24 academic departments and three interdisciplinary programs. Gustavus offers a wide variety of student opportunities to complement its educational offerings. There are more than 110 recognized student groups and organizations, including 12 student-run religious organizations. The college campus boasts 21 academic and service facilities, as well as 14 residence halls and apartment or town house complexes. Up to 90 percent of Gustavus’ students typically reside on campus. The Gusties are members of the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) and is affiliated with the NCAA Division III. The college sports 23 varsity athletic programs for its students. Also, some 80

percent of students participate in the 30 intramural athletic offerings and nine club sports. Gustavus’ athletic facilities host many student and regional events throughout the year. The Lund Center for Physical Education and Health has been named one of the finest small-college sports complexes in the U.S. The facility involves nearly 85 percent of the student body with its varsity, intramural and personal fitness programs. The Swanson Tennis Center, a domed indoor tennis facility, offers memberships for juniors, adults and families. The beautiful 340-acre campus also includes the 135-acre Linnaeus Arboretum.

The topic of the 54th conference, to be held Oct. 2-3, 2018, is “Living Soil: A Universe Underfoot.” Find Gustavus online at www.gustavus.edu.

Students also participate in many fine arts and music programs. The Hillstrom Museum of Art and the Schaefer Fine Arts Center, which includes the Kresge Dance Studio and Jussi Bjorling Recital Hall, are popular among students and the public. Study-abroad opportunities in more than 40 countries are available for Gustavus students. And students have access to the award-winning student dining options from the C. Charles Jackson Campus Center. A Gustavus landmark, Christ Chapel, plays host to cultural events throughout the year – many of which are open to the public – including the popular Christmas in Christ Chapel, which rings in the holiday season each December. Among the many annual conferences and seminars hosted by Gustavus is the fall Nobel Conference, which celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2014. The event typically attracts some 6,000 people each year, including students and educators from high schools and colleges throughout the nation.

Saint Peter Public Schools St. Peter Public Schools, which celebrated its 150th year in 2015, unveiled its new $55 million state-of-the-art high school on the city’s west side in 2017. The school district also made improvements to its other facilities and reconfigured its classes and building usage. The district encompasses St. Peter, Kasota and portions of southwestern Le Sueur County, along with sections of eastern Nicollet County. It has several sites: the new Saint Peter High School for grades 9-12; the Saint Peter Middle School for grades 5-8; North Elementary School for grades 2-4; South Elementary Early Learning Center for kindergarten and first grade. The district is also part of the Minnesota Valley Education District, which services special needs students and their families. Part of the district’s expansion plans included establishing a workforce development center at the new high school to support and enhance academy-based learning for students in the areas of agricultural science, manufacturing and engineering. Another highlight of the new high school project is the collaboration between the city of St. Peter and Saint Peter Public Schools on the development of a new

history St. Peter’s rich history grew from a settlement originally called Rock Bend in the early 1850s. The St. Peter community is one of the oldest cities in Minnesota. The Dakota Indians were the first to live in the area, settling along the Minnesota River and utilizing a natural ford which came to be known as Traverse des Sioux. In 1851, an historic treaty was signed on this site by the Dakota Indians and the U.S. government, ceding 24 million acres of land to the federal government. St. Peter is said to be founded by Captain William D. Dodd in 1853. The current name was provided by members of the St. Peter Co., based in St. Paul. Willis Gorman, the second territorial governor of Minnesota, was a member. A plan to make St. Peter the state capital in 1857 very nearly succeeded. But state lore claims an original bill to make St. Peter the capitol disappeared until after the legislative session, halting efforts to replace St. Paul. As the community grew over the years, it absorbed the community of Traverse des Sioux to the north. When the Civil War began in 1861, St. Peter provided soldiers for many military units. One of the community’s founders, Capt. Asgrim K. Skaro, was killed during the Battle of Nashville in December 1864 while leading his company. Others participated in the Dakota War that began in 1862. St. Peter provided four other men who served in military units at various times and also served as Minnesota governor. Henry A.

12 | St. Peter community & Visitors Guide

Swift was in a local militia and Horace Austin served in a Minnesota unit in the Dakota War. Andrew R. McGill served in the Civil War. John A. Johnson served in the Minnesota National Guard. The first state hospital in Minnesota began in St. Peter in 1866, initially using a large building downtown until the first building on the current site was completed. Today, the facility is known as the St. Peter Department of Human Services Campus and employs 1,150. Gustavus Adolphus College came to the community in the 1870s. Its Swedish roots helped it work with the Nobel Foundation to establish an annual Nobel Conference that brings outstanding scientists and thousands of visitors to the campus. With very few exceptions, St. Peter has been the home of the Nicollet County Fair since the mid-1800s. The site also hosts car shows, dog shows, rodeos and other events. St. Peter has rebuilt after several disasters. The community experienced a large fire in 1887 that destroyed a considerable portion of its business district. A tornado in 1924 destroyed or damaged several buildings. The Minnesota River has also flooded frequently, with especially severe floods in 1881, 1951 and 1965. And in 2018, the community will be observing the 20th anniversary of the 1998 tornado which tore through the heart of St. Peter, as well as the community of Comfrey and Le Center. Two lives were lost. Hundreds of structures were affected; many could not be repaired. Thousands of trees were also uprooted and destroyed. But the city rebuilt better than ever. Today, the city of St. Peter is proud of its role in rebounding from that ’98 disaster. It has served as a model for others.

agriculture St. Peter’s economic roots run deeply in diverse ways, but few businesses are as closely tied to its history as the agricultural community. Nicollet County’s rich farmland places itself among Minnesota’s top cropproducing regions. The county ranks 20th in the state in total agricultural production and 34th in crop production, 30th in corn. Nicollet County’s top agricultural ranking is actually in the pork industry, fourth highest in the state, according to the latest MDA figures. The county’s overall livestock ranking is 11th, with dairy cows ranking 18th in Minnesota. Nicollet County’s overall annual cash receipts due to agriculture have topped $400 million, according to the Minnesota Department of Agriculture. Its rich farmland helped contribute to record crop production throughout Minnesota in 2015. Record statewide corn production topped 1.4 billion bushels, while soybean production also hit record levels at over 364 million bushels.

Three key farm regional and statewide organizations joined together in 2015, each celebrating 100 years in the region — the Nicollet County Farm Bureau, University of Minnesota Extension Service and United Farmers Cooperative (formerly Lafayette Farmers Co-op). Nicollet County agriculture is part of the state’s significant presence in the U.S. markets, with an estimated $19 billion total, according to the department. Minnesota is the 4th largest agricultural exporting state in the U.S., topping $7 billion, accounting for one-third of the state’s total export market.

health care River’s Edge Hospital leadership is basking in a strong 2017 financial year and looking forward to the coming $33.8 million renovation and expansion project. CEO George Rohrich called 2017 “maybe the hospital’s best year ever” in recapping the finances. The hospital posted a strong cash-positive year in 2015 and has ever since. That’s largely on the back of a partnership with Mankato’s Orthopaedic and Fracture Clinic. The hospital is the site for hip, knee and shoulder replacements. Spine surgeries have also recently started there. The hospital’s expansion project is expected to be completed in nine phases over two and a half years with a planned 2018 start. The expansion will build a new patient wing of 25 rooms and double the number of operating rooms to 4. Officials hope the hospital will be able to accommodate more surgeries, more specialties and have rooms for emergency room admittances and swing beds. The hospital is currently licensed for up to 25 beds. The city-owned hospital is a Level IV Trauma Center, providing emergency room physicians, nurses, paramedics and technicians 24 hours a day, and has also expanded its Urgent Care services. River’s Edge Hospital also provides emergency ambulance services to the greater St. Peter area. Funding is provided in part by the River’s Edge Hospital Foundation. For more information, see riversedgehealth.org.

parks, trails, & outdoor recreation St. Peter has over 20 parks and nature area that offer a variety of amenities. The crown jewel, the 11-acre Minnesota Square Park on Hwy. 169, currently features a pavilion that harkens back to a simpler time. It’s also the center point of the city’s beloved and biggest annual celebrations -- the Old-Fashioned Fourth of July and the popular Rock Bend Folk Festival. The City of St. Peter has plans to replace the pavilion in 2018 with a multi-purpose and larger pavilion. An upgraded, larger pavilion has been in the city’s planning process since a 33-member task force recommended a design in 2012. The cost of the new pavilion, with enough covered seating for 260 people, could top $1 million. The city has received a promise of

$200,000 from the state’s Legacy Fund. The new Veterans Memorial is taking shape on the northeast corner of Minnesota Square Park, with an anticipated dedication tentatively scheduled for Sunday, July 1. Nicollet County operates the 628-acre Seven Mile Creek County Park just south of the city on U.S. Hwy. 169. It offers 8 miles of trails as well as trout stream fishing, playgrounds, two volleyball courts, ball diamond, picnic shelters, picnic tables, grills, restrooms and a boat landing to the Minnesota River. arts & entertainment St. Peter is an arts and heritage town, proud of its history and culture. At its hub is the Arts Center of Saint Peter, which offers performances, exhibits and classes. The center’s staff and volunteers are frequent participants at the many St. Peter festivals and community events. At times, the center spearheads fun community-wide events, such as the popular “Jesus Christ Superstar” revival and singalong. Its annual “Souper Bowl” pottery sale and soup fundraiser grows in popularity, as well. Up the hill is Gustavus Adolphus College’s Hillstrom Museum of Art and its Theater & Dance and Music departments, which offer a wealth of events and performances by students and guest artists that are open to the public. Find a calendar of events or purchase tickets online at gustavus. edu/finearts. But the newest addition to the community arts and performance spaces is the 750-seat in the new St. Peter High School. The SPHS theater

department opened the venue with the rousing, sell-out performances of the musical, “Footloose” in November. The arts flourish throughout the St. Peter school district and private schools in St. Peter with choir, band and drama performances throughout the year. Minnesota Square Park is also becoming wellknown for its musical events, including Rock Bend Music Festival and the Ambassadors’ Bluefest. Oktoberfest continues to be held downtown each year. The St. Peter Choral Society is entering its 38th year. There are no auditions or membership fees to join. For more information, contact director Sara McKay at 507-934-6176 or johnaramckay@ gmail.com. VIsit saintpeterchoralsociety.org. There’s also a long list of events — from films to music — at Nicollet County Historical Society’s Treaty Site History Center. Find the schedule at nchsmn.org/events.

old-fashioned

4th of july

St. Peter’s Old-Fashioned Fourth of July celebration will be noting its 48th year. Residents roll out the red, white and blue carpet during the annual event, held annually at Minnesota Square Park following the grand parade. The festivities, sponsored by the St. Peter Area Chamber of Commerce, begin with the 10 a.m. parade that starts at Washington and Broadway avenues before winding its south to Elm Street and Minnesota Square Park. Thousands young and old, dressed in their patriotic finest, welcome the parade — complete with area marching bands, local organizations and the Shriners and their mini cars — one of the largest in the state. But that’s not nearly all. A picnic from noon to 4 p.m. in the city’s beloved park includes food vendors (and the rumored return of chicken), hot dog-eating contest, a beer tent, kids activities, music, classic cars and fun for the whole family. There’s even a Freedom Fun Run, which features a 5K and 8K race. For the youngsters, there’s a 1-Mile Kids Run and a Toddler Trot. But what would the Fourth of July be without a grand finale? When the sun goes down, the sky above the Nicollet County Fairground lights up with fireworks, a fitting end to a perfect day. Get involved For more information, to volunteer or enter the parade, contact the St. Peter Area Chamber of Commerce at 507-934-3400 or visit stpeterchamber.com/4th-of-july.

nicollet county fair The tradition of the county fair is alive and well in Nicollet County. This year’s fair will be held Aug. 8 to 12 at the fairgrounds on West Union Street in St. Peter. The traditionally popular demolition derby, tractor pull and talent shows will return, as will plenty of other fun activities. Of course there will be plenty of animals, carnival rides, exhibits and that irresistible fair food. Admission is free, though there is a small fee to park on the fairgrounds. While a March 1998 tornado that ripped through St. Peter devastated the fairgrounds, today’s fairgoers will notice the restored barns and other buildings ready to welcome visitors.

Sunday, the fair’s final day, is set aside to recognize Nicollet County’s century and sesquicentennial farms, those that have remained in one family for 100 or 150 years, respectively. The fair features 4-H exhibits and demonstrations, live music, an amateur talent show, and livestock and animal judging. Midway amusements run each afternoon and late into the evening, providing thrills for those who love to ride. Bingo is a regular fair feature, as are an assortment of food stands and the Jaycees Beer Garden. Be sure to stop in and experience the fun. Learn more at nicolletcountyfair.com or Nicollet County Fair on Facebook.

Senior citizens are special guests of the fair on Friday, when two outstanding Nicollet County seniors will be recognized at a special program. Children’s Day at the fair is Saturday, with special entertainment and reduced-price tickets for carnival rides.

Rock Bend Folk Festival

September 8-9 It’s been called a two-day celebration of southern Minnesota’s arts and artists — that’s how Rock Bend Folk Festival is best described. But the popularity of the festival now brings in acts from throughout the U.S. Nearly two dozen acts, performing bluegrass, folk and jazz can be heard throughout the annual festival that showcases the talents of area artists and musicians in St. Peter’s Minnesota Square Park. Highlighting the event, now in its 27th year, is a Saturday evening concert in the park’s main pavilion. The event is free, largely funded through donations and free will offerings. A main stage is where the long list of musicians perform. A second stage features stories, more songs, demonstrations and other family-centered programs. The event attracts thousands of visitors to the park for music, arts, and plenty of food and drink. Nearly 40 arts and craft exhibitors and a variety of food vendors are expected. Come one or both days. Bring the kids and the folks. Toss down a blanket or pull up a lawn chair, and prepare to be entertained. Find more at rockbend.org or at Rock Bend Folk Festival on Facebook.
