NYHEDER

February/March 2017 DANISH SOCIAL CLUB OF VICTORIA Board of Directors

It’s a new year and 2017 has gotten off to a great start. Our club has hosted a wonderful Fastelavn. This event took place on Saturday, February 25th and was enthusiastically attended by 40 adults and 18 children! Beautiful table decorations made by Birgit Larsen set the tone for the afternoon as did the well crafted barrel, made by Willy Klausen, hanging from the rafters. Adults gathered close around the action, watching their children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews line up to whack the barrel! The children, many in costumes and wearing the provided protective glasses, had great fun hitting the barrel – all under the direction of Bent Andersen and his grand-daughter, Wendy. Following the scooping up of the bounty of candy (and two “cats”) which fell to the floor, food and refreshments were served. Bowls of tasty chili, buttered buns, tea, coffee, juice, cookies and various pastries were happily eaten by all. The children sang and danced while clean-up by various volunteers took place. Thanks to Bent, Wendy, Willy, Birgit, Annemari, Karen, Gloria and Finn and Tom and Grethe for the parts they played in making our afternoon so much fun!

The second event being planned is our Kro-aften at 7:00 pm on Friday, March 17th. As per last year, sandwiches will be ordered in advance so Annemari and the ladies will know just what to serve. By now most of you will have received this order form and will have seen that the menu selection has increased to better serve our members.

Briefly looking back at 2016 I think that most members who attended our Christmas dinner will agree it was the highlight of the year!. Our club members, led by Annemari made all the food. As in the past, Willy made the lovely table decorations and numerous members helped set up tables. The serving tables with their red tablecloths, candles and greenery really set the tone for a great Christmas evening. What an accomplishment! We served over 80 people. Thank you to all who gave their time and efforts to make this such a success.

Another thank you goes out to Kai, our club web master. Under his supervision this club website has been quite successful. It is the way new potential members can learn about our club and hopefully contact us. Unfortunately for us, Kai wishes to step down and turn over the website to someone else to manage. Our thanks and best wishes for a Happy and Healthy 2017 go out to Kai!!

Two spectacular events well attended and beyond expectations. Close to 90 members and friends enjoyed the Christmas dinner, it was a huge success. Memories from past year totally erased. President Hans gave all the folks involved well deserved accolades. (See Pres.Rep.) The Fastelavn, the annual event for the kids. Once again a record number of kids, moms, dads and grandparents enjoying the kids bashing the heck out of Willy’s Barrel. It stood the test of time but finally succumbed to a vicious swing by a junior baseball leaguer. jeh
