NYHEDER

August/September 2017 DANISH SOCIAL CLUB OF VICTORIA The club’s last event, the Kroaften Smørrebrod on May 26, was very successful. For this success we again owe thanks to Annemari, her sister and the dedicated team of ladies who assisted her.

Summer is now coming to a close and we are looking forward to our fall and winter events (see calendar of events posted on our website or in this newsletter). Rosemary and I were pleased to host the annual BBQ last Friday, August 18th at our home. We had 39 guests, including Pastor Saltorp who is returning to Denmark in a few weeks. A card, signed by those in attendance, and a couple of native prints were presented to her. She addressed the group regarding her plans and some information regarding the new pastor and her family who will be coming soon. The salads, desserts, fruit, beans, wine and beer that were brought by guests were greatly enjoyed. A big thanks, in particular, to Tom Russell for handling the cooking of the hamburgers and hotdogs. He has proven himself really adept at this job and we hope he will agree to do it again next year! Again, thanks to everyone who attended and a great big thanks to those who gifted us with wine and fruit (and Jette for the crocheted dish cloths)!

It’s official: Hygge part of new Denmark Canon

Nation unveils ten values it wants to be identified with going forward What it’s all about: flags, tolerance and equality December 13th, 2016 10:59 am| by Christian W Facebooktwittergoogle_ pluspinterestmail Following a nationwide survey, Denmark has released a new canon that indicates which values the nation wants to be identified with going forward. The Denmark Canon, which was established by the former culture minister, Bertel Haarder, includes ten values that include equality, freedom and … of course … ‘hygge’! Danish researchers uncover correlation between birth weight and intelligence. On average, babies weighing 3.5-4 kilos at birth have the highest IQs

It’s the ‘is’ in Danish – an unthinkable absentee on a summer’s day Did you know that despite its umlaut ‘ä’, Häagen-Dazs is supposed to be Danish-sounding? The original cartons even bore a map of Denmark. The US ice cream brand’s Polish-born American-Jewish creator Reuben Mattus settled on the name in the early 1960s for three reasons: as a tribute to Denmark’s evacuation of its Jews during World War II, the positive image of the country in his home country, and the excellent reputation of its dairy products – most particularly ice cream. If you want further evidence of Denmark’s high regard for everyone’s favourite summer holiday treat, just consider the word ‘guf ’.

The ten values that make up Denmark Canon are: Welfare society: in Denmark’s welfare society, citizens enjoy a high level of protection against social and physical risk and benefit from a number of public advantages Freedom: freedom is the cornerstone value of Denmark’s democracy. As per Western tradition, the freedom of the people is intertwined with the freedom of the individual Trust: the Danish culture of trust builds on an expectation that one’s fellow citizens and public institutions are trustworthy Equality in the eyes of the law: Denmark is often ranked in the top of international indexes regarding trust and low corruption Gender equality: Danish society is built on an equality between the sexes, which means that men and women should have the same rights and opportunities The Danish language: Danish is the mother tongue for over 90 percent of the population in Denmark. Language is not just a tool for communication, but a banner of culture Associations and volunteering: associations make up the foundation of how to organise communities across Denmark Liberality: liberality builds on a premise that all people have a right to decide over their own lives. To convey liberality is to have an open-minded and tolerant attitude and mindset Hygge: hygge is considered a special way to be together in relaxed conditions. Hygge has its own word and many contend it cannot be translated. The Christian cultural heritage: Christianity’s concept concerning charity and Protestant thoughts about the importance of work, personal responsibility and all humans being equal in the eyes of God has left its mark on modern Denmark.

BBQ AT FREDERIKSEN’S AUGUST 18TH, 2017

A FOND FAREWELL TO BIRGITTE SALTORP

Thank You Hans & Rosemary for putting on this Annual BBQ. It’s a festive event, full of wonderful food. Thanks to Tom for his expertise on the grill. Plus a fond farewell to Birgitte who is returning to Denmark. So good soo appreciated. jeh PS: Finn Sander Story Part 2 will return next issue.

Page 5 NOTE: Ken Jensen was one of the founding members of the SCS. He was actively involved as a Festival planner

and as a Viking during the actual ScanFest 1986. He went on to become the 2nd president of our new society. Under his leadership, our society maintained an active schedule of activities and even raised $35,000 to refurbish the dance floor at the Scandinavian Community Centre. It is now properly spring-loaded, much to the delight of those who dance on it. Rest in peace my good friend. Robert Asgeirsson

Memories Of The Scandinavian Festival -1986 Held At Midsummer in Vanier Park, Vancouver By Susan & Ken Jensen This special Scandinavian Festival to honour Vancouver’s Centennial, took several years in the planning stages and each of the five Nordic countries was asked for representatives to the planning organization. Susan was nominated by the Danish Sisterhood and at her first meeting accepted the task of setting up a Viking Village. It was a huge and happy task which included the Society for Creative Anachronisms, and they came with a wealth of information. Next, Susan contacted the Lutheran college in Camrose, Alberta to borrow their Viking ship. In the end, it was sent to the Alberta Pavilion at Expo 86 from whom we borrowed it. The SCA gave us a contact to their “Royal Navy of An Tir” whose leader, Don Bettger, known as “Stormcrow” lived in Everett Washington. We met him and organized to have his two Viking ships “Knaars” at the festival. Another huge support was Michael Shoblom who was the epitome of a young Viking, tall, strong and blond. Michael was a master craftsman and he produced a huge hand-carved longhouse (approximately 10x20 feet) which we roofed with the traditional red and white striped tarp. We made many visits to Michael’s home in Deep cove to help carve and work on helmets and visit this amazing young man. Michael also created a series of both metal and fiberglass Viking helmets which we still have today. All of the Viking exhibits were created by or vetted by the SCA Viking group right down to the games played outside the longhouse and the food cooked inside. The costumes were designed after original Viking costumes Susan saw in the Copenhagen museum and several dozen, male and female costumes were sewn by the Danish Sisterhood. The Vikings went off on an adventure the day before the festival and visited the Expo grounds with Viking raiding and pillaging in mind. [The stunt was to get free TV News promotion of the festival that weekend.] Ken and his brother Vikings were in full regalia with Susan, using her SCA name “Freya”, was dressed in a flowing red cape over her costume. Ken and several others wore real bear skins and helmets. The

men had grown beards and looked fierce, and their weapons were actually fully sharpened. Imagine what security would make of that today? Led by Mike Sjoblom, we wended our way through the Expo grounds to the Norwegian Pavilion where we took possession of their flag. Swords and broad axes drawn as we attacked the Alberta Pavilion. Ken stepped into the reflecting pool that held their flagpole only to discover that the water was up to his ummm thighs. He raised the Norwegian flag and gave a great roar and the fighting commenced. There was bloodshed (phony blood organized by Robert Asgeirsson who arranged the whole raid), bodies lay on the ground and our Vikings carried off two lovely blond girls (who worked at the Alberta Pavilion) slung over the broad shoulders. We went to the Viking ship, borrowed from the Alberta Pavilion, where the organization fell somewhat apart. The Vikings, never having been in the boat before, sat down facing in two directions. I [Susan] yelled off the dock to them to ...and got them to turn their backs to Ken, who was the Helmsman. The CBC crew filming this debacle from an overhead position yelled down to me to ask if I’d like them to edit out the swearing. Everyone was laughing as they set off across the water to Vanier Park. Unfortunately we weren’t allowed to put the ship into the water until a day before, thus the boards were dry and it leaked like a sieve. More bailing than rowing was done on the way across according to Ken. This event ended with Ken driving the captured wenches back to Expo via Stanley Park in the Volvo stretch limo provided by Don Docksteader Motors for use at the Festival. The limo was used to pick up dignitaries, etc., who arrived at the airport and they had no trouble identifying their contact as Ken was waiting for them in full Viking dress including his sharpened sword. Today, he would probably be tasered. Following the Festival, at the wrap-up meeting, the board decided that this had been an excellent event and that the group worked well together. Al Paquette, who had written the constitution for the new Festival Society, was asked to write a constitution for a society with a wider mandate than just a festival, and with Susan as its first President, the Scandinavian Cultural Society was born. [Ken followed Susan as SCS president for a number of years. Under his leadership our society applied for and received a grant for $35,000 to redo the wooden dance floor in the Scandinavian Community Centre.] With the help of many, many volunteers and countless hours, our Society has continued to enrich the lives of Scandinavians and share our culture and traditions with others outside our Nordic heritage. We are proud to be a part of this excellent society and be partners with those who were there at the beginning – those who are leading the society today and will in the future.

Kai Hansen - I wished I had known him better. He truly was a very interesting individual. Nothing could demonstrate that more than a meeting of family and friends at Cadburo Bay Park to eulogize Kai. He was a clown, he was a man who spread happiness. We had to dress up as clowns and say a few words. There was laughter there were tears, Kai was a very interesting gentleman. He created the Danish Social Club of Victoria’s WEB Site, lots of information and so well put together. A website is a world communicator and many people from Denmark or any other country for that matter visited the page. e!

Laughter is the best medicine A lawyer boarded an airplane in New Orleans with a box of frozen crabs and asked a blonde flight attendant to take care of them for him. She took the box and promised to put it in the crew’s refrigerator. He advised her that he was holding her personally responsible for them staying frozen, mentioning in a very haughty manner that he was a lawyer, and proceeded to rant at her about what would happen if she let them thaw out. Needless to say, she was annoyed by his behavior. Shortly before landing in New York, she used the intercom to announce to the entire cabin, “Would the lawyer who gave me the crabs in New Orleans please raise your hand?” Not one hand went up, so she took them home and ate them. Two lessons here: 1. Lawyers aren’t as smart as they think they are. 2. Blondes aren’t as dumb as most folk think.

A very self-important college freshman attending a recent football game took it upon himself to explain to a senior citizen sitting next to him why it was impossible for the older generation to understand his generation. ‘You grew up in a different world, actually an almost primitive one,’ the student said, loud enough for many of those nearby to hear. ‘The young people of today are much more advanced than people your age. We grew up with television, jet planes, space travel, man walking on the moon and the internet. We have cell phones, nuclear energy , electric and hydrogen cars , computers, automated manufacturing, amazing technologies, ...and,’ pausing to take another drink of beer. The senior took advantage of the break in the student’s litany and said, ‘You’re right, son. We didn’t have those things when we were young... so we invented them. Now, you arrogant little shit, what are YOU doing for the next generation ?’ You have to love senior citizens!

Prayer In church last Sunday, I heard a sweet elderly lady in the pew next to me saying a prayer. It was so innocent and sincere that I just had to share it with you: “Dear Lord - The last few years have been very tough. You have taken my favorite actor Paul Newman; My favorite actress - Elizabeth Taylor; My favorite singer - Andy Williams; My favorite author - Tom Clancy, and now my favorite comedian - Robin Williams. Just wanted you to know that my favorite politician is Donald Trump.
