Stewart Airport Expands with DHL, Allegiant Airlines, and Brooklyn Brewery General Manager of Stewart Airport/Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, Ed Harrison, had plenty of news for the Orange County Chamber Membership at the monthly breakfast on November 9. He began his presentation talking about cargo and general aviation, two areas of Stewart International Airport’s business that don’t get much attention, but are critical to supporting jobs and economic growth. The world’s largest logistics company, DHL, is a major new tenant at Stewart and has begun renovations on a 21,000-square-foot cargo facility and will be starting operations in early 2017, adding 30 new jobs to Stewart. Stewart will be the only airport in the country with UPS, FedEx and DHL under one roof. DHL has committed to a 10-year lease, so Stewart’s Continued on page 4

Casey Meier, a lifelong Orange County resident, has been named Director of Finance at the Orange County Chamber of Commerce. She is responsible for handling finance for the Chamber and its subsidiary corporations, the Chamber facility and office administration.

Craig Pelsue, a local entrepreneur for more than 15 years, has been named Member Relationship Manager at the Orange County Chamber of Commerce. He is responsible for helping members maximize their membership in the Chamber, as well as bringing in new members. “Craig has a great background in sales and customer service,” said Chamber President Lynn Allen Cione. “As a businessman, he has been active with the Chamber for many years and thoroughly understands the value of membership. How a Business Line of Credit Can Help Manage Cash Flow By Patrick Donovan

For many business owners, the cyclical ebb and flow of sales can impact their short-term working capital needs. If you’ve owned a business for a number of years, you’re familiar with its peak sales periods and times when demand for your product or service declines. These fluctuations can be particularly pronounced for seasonal businesses such as landscapers and retailers. Your business should always have savings on hand, however, there are times when it may not be enough to meet your cash flow needs. A line of credit can be an effective way to insulate your business from these occasional lulls. It allows you to borrow, repay and borrow again so the money is ready to access when you need it. “The best time to open a business line of credit is before you need it,” says Vicki Batten, Director of Business Services at Hudson Valley Federal Credit Union. “That way you’re better prepared to take advantage of opportunities or manage challenges that arise for your business.” Available options include a business credit card and a business line of credit, each with their own unique set of pros and cons. As a business owner, you’ll want to consider how you plan to use the proceeds, how urgent your need may be for the funds, and the health of the industry in which you operate. According to the New York State Small Business Administration, before you apply for such a line of credit, you should thoroughly assess

your current financial situation. Lenders will factor in the number of years in business, current cash flow, collateral and credit worthiness.

This is typically a more suitable option for an established company with substantial fluctuations in working capital. commitment to grow into a vibrant economic engine is certainly revving up. Cargo at Stewart also set a world record this year when Beyonce needed to move all her stage and sound equipment to Europe during her recent tour, and she picked Stewart for the biggest overseas movement of soundstage equipment in US history. In 2015, cargo activity at Stewart supported 400 jobs, $25 million in wages, and $75 million in sales. 2016 will be reporting even higher numbers and 2017 is sure to surpass. Stewart is the second largest employer in this region, second to West Point, and boasts about 2,700 workers and $450 million in annual economic activity to the region.

Ed Harrison also mentioned that they have a new fixed-based operator, which is a company that handles private and charter aircraft the same way that the Port Authority handles commercial carriers like Allegiant, American, Delta and JetBlue. Signature Flight Support joined their airport community in July, and took over fixed based operations here, while preserving every job that previously existed. They have plans to make investments in the airport, and as they grow, jobs will too. Signature is the world’s largest fixed-based operator and they’ve made Stewart their 200th station. According to the NYS Department of Transportation, each business jet, on average, means five direct on-airport jobs and $1 million of annual economic activity. With respect to commercial passenger service, Stewart is pleased to announce Allegiant Airlines had great success with their new Myrtle Beach flight that launched at Stewart in 2016. Planes between Stewart and South Carolina were consistently full, so Allegiant is making an even bigger commitment in 2017, notifying Stewart that they will be adding another frequency to Myrtle Beach in 2017, while also expanding the flight season on both ends. Ed did signal that more significant news was upon us, but that he couldn’t divulge just yet. On November 11, the big news was unveiled - - Brooklyn Brewery is making a home, not just in Orange County, but at Stewart. That’s right – the country’s 12th largest craft brewer will build an $80 million brewery and warehouse at the Stewart Industrial Park and will be approved for a 60-year lease. According to the Times Herald Record, the lease envisions construction of a 250,000-square-foot building with an option to expand to 350,000 square feet. In addition to brewing and storing facilities, the building will include a retail and visitor center. With all these acquisitions and improvements this year with more on the way, there’s no doubt that Stewart remains an attraction option for customers and clients.

LEGOLAND Park’s educational programming engages preschool, elementary and secondary school students in subjects from science to humanities. Programs such as FIRST® LEGO® League Jr. and FIRST LEGO League are international inquiry-based educational programs that not only reinforce the importance of a STEM education, but support core life skills such as problem solving, critical thinking and teamwork.     Educators were able to see LEGOLAND’s “Tall Towers” program for grades K-3, “Story Starter” for grades K-1, “Milo’s Journey” for Grades k-4 and “Amazing Machines” for grades 3-6 in action. LEGOLAND New York also recently announced free annual passes to all Orange County educators in addition to $15 per student field trips. The proposed Legoland New York park is geared to families with children ages 2-12 and has a tentative 2019 opening. It is expected to draw between 1.5 million and 2.5 million visitors a year. LEGOLAND New York will include signature attractions that have contributed to the popularity of LEGOLAND Parks around the world. There are currently seven LEGOLAND parks worldwide: LEGOLAND Billund in Denmark, LEGOLAND Windsor in England, LEGOLAND California, LEGOLAND Deutschland in Germany, LEGOLAND Florida, LEGOLAND Malaysia, and LEGOLAND Dubai in the United Arab Emirates ---which just opened this fall. LEGOLAND Japan is scheduled to open in 2017. LEGOLAND Parks are part of Merlin Entertainments, the leading name in location-based, family entertainment. Europe’s Number 1 and the world’s second-largest visitor attraction operator, Merlin now operates 114 attractions, 13 hotels/4 holiday villages in 23 countries and across 4 continents. LEGOLAND New York’s draft environmental impact statement (DEIS) is still being reviewed by town officials.

The Creative Industries in Orange County When you mention the arts, people naturally think of paintings, galleries, concerts and theaters. Orange County has these, but there is more. Arts are part of what economists call the Creative Industries which also include film, television, advertising, marketing, architecture, publishing, crafts, software, graphic design, fashion design and industrial design. According to Americans for the Arts, in 2015 there were 795 creative businesses in Orange County with 2,617 employees, plus another 763 people identifying themselves as professional artists. The US Department of Commerce reported that in 2013 total spending on arts and cultural commodities was $1.1 trillion. As a fraction of GDP, arts and culture (at 4.32%) was bigger than tourism (2.6%), transportation (2.7%) and construction (3.4%). The Creative Industries are big business. Local creative businesses include the Polich Tallix sculpture foundry in Rock Tavern, one of only a halfdozen such businesses in the world that creates monumental sculptures. They became famous recently because they now make the Oscar statuettes. Lycian Stage Lighting in Sugar Loaf designs and manufactures spotlights sold around the world to the Olympics, theaters, stadiums and arenas. Costume Armour in Cornwall makes Star Wars storm troopers for Disney parks as well as scenery and props for theater, film and TV. Production Resource Group, Center Line Studios, Union Square Group and Scenic Arts Studio are other local companies making scenery, backdrops, grids and props. Alto Music, in addition to its familiar retail store in Middletown, designs and manufactures microphones, speakers and monitors. LaBella Strings in Newburgh is the world’s oldest incorporated, continuously familyowned and operated music string manufacturer. Metro Sound Pros in Washingtonville design and install sound, lighting, and video systems. 6

There are more such businesses here in Orange County. Many local people do not know about these businesses. The reason is that nearly all export their products outside of Orange County. We who live here are not their customers, and they do not market to us. However, we benefit by being their employees, by selling them materials and services, and from the taxes they pay. Creative jobs require a lot of training and skill, and for this reason they are relatively high-paying. Creative jobs are not likely to be automated because most products are not mass-produced but are one of a kind or limited quantities. Creative jobs are not likely to be sent offshore since clients want them to be nearby and well-versed in American culture. The arts are also good at improving communities, such as Soho, Chelsea, Peekskill, Beacon, Kingston and of course, Newburgh. Hudson Valley Pattern for Progress just announced a new project called the Creative Neighborhood designed to bring even more creative entrepreneurs to Newburgh.

In 2015, nearly 800 creative businesses called Orange County home, said Gary Schuster, at the Chamber’s September Membership Breakfast.

Finally, the arts are good for your business because you want employees who have imagination and creativity, passion and commitment, discipline and skills, can play in teams, and can perform for an audience. BUSINESS INSIDER Mount Students Make Professional Connections in Journalism From magazine and newspaper editors to marketing gurus, Mount Saint Mary College’s “Real World Connections in Writing and Journalism” event on November 1 gave graduating seniors the opportunity to network with a plethora of local writing professionals. The Real World Connections series, hosted by the college’s Career Center, unites seniors of all majors with professionals in a variety of fields, including successful alumni and high profile recruiters. Writing professionals who mentored the Mount students were: Brittany King ’11 of People Magazine Alyssa Watkins ’13 of KC Engineering Sam Anderson of New York Times Magazine James Danella of Media Vision Advertising Barry Lewis of the Times Herald-Record Martha Schueneman, a freelance writer Kate Walsh of Hudson Valley Magazine Despite perceptions of decline, Lewis, the executive editor of the Times Herald-Record, says there are good opportunities in the journalism field. Print circulation of newspapers has declined, he explained, but thanks to the internet, “There are more people looking at our newspaper now than there has ever been.” His advice to students looking to break into the field was simple: place work experience at the top of your résumé, instead of GPA or degrees earned. “I want to know if you can write a story,” Lewis said. Walsh, editor of Hudson Valley Magazine, advised students to have a friend proofread their résumé and cover letter before sending them out. A single error could mean the difference between landing an interview and being rejected, she said. King, an editor at People Magazine, says the job is “exciting and fastpaced.” But, she noted, she wouldn’t have been hired without the internship experience she gained while at the Mount, including working for MTV. King encouraged students to seek internship and co-op opportunities through the college’s Career Center: “As many as you possibly can, as soon as you possibly can,” she said. “Don’t be afraid to work your way up and don’t be afraid to commute to the city.” Though each of the professionals comes from a different background, there was a common thread to their success, noted John Chiaia of Brooklyn, N.Y., a journalism and public relations major. “They didn›t graduate and then suddenly have their dream job,” he said. “Getting to where you want to be requires patience and drive. Everything eventually falls into place if you put in the work.” The Mount’s Career Center prepares students for varied career opportunities in the Hudson Valley, New York City, the Capital Region, and beyond. Today vs. Tomorrow’s Dollars

Too often I see the same challenge continually when I meet new companies… They are almost always chasing tomorrow’s dollars and totally focused on what’s happening today. While one of the many clear outcomes here results in poor cash flow, other business challenges arise as well. For the sake of this article, let’s focus on the marketing issues for now. A well - positioned brand

A terrific step in improving a brand’s effort in planting seeds toward attracting “tomorrow’s dollars” would be to position the brand better in your selected targeted market. There are some really terrific companies around the region that are “the best kept secret” in their market(s) unfortunately because of poor branding. Find ways to position your company effectively just for the purpose of getting out what your brand stands for and a message defining what solutions you can solve for your desired consumer. People will eventually notice and as they

continue to come across your brand in numerous ways, (defined within your marketing strategy), they will begin to gravitate toward your business to better understand what you specifically offer for them. A real marketing strategy

How can a business make educated decisions on what media to buy or what events to attend without having hard facts & research to discern what would work & what wouldn’t? Defining your target market(s), growth potential, ideal client(s), competition, industry data, etc. etc.… can empower you to make informed decisions & wisely invest in your advertising & marketing to bring your business positive results. The same questions apply to the creative and messaging presenting your brand to your consumer. Colors, shapes, choosing the right messaging, etc. is all extremely difficult without knowing who you’re specifically targeting, where they are and why your product or service would be great for them. A marketing strategy is instrumental in assisting with positioning your company to attract “tomorrow’s dollars” vs. just chasing today’s. A marketing budget
